Chapter Forty Three
Primadonna
"AHHH! THIS IS the best day of my life!" Sydney squealed while taking a video of Miguel walking without his wheelchair or crutches.
Miguel rolled his eyes and hid his face from the camera. "Is that really necessary?"
"Course it is," she replied and walked closer to him, keeping the camera on him. "I want everyone to see the amazing progress that my angel has made," she wrapped her arm around his neck and pressed her cheek against his. "Isn't he the cutest thing? Mig, say hi."
He rolled his eyes again but gave in. "Hi," he said flatly and kissed her cheek. He pushed the phone away. "Now take it away."
Sydney rolled her eyes and ended the video. She smiled brightly. "I'm so proud of you, love."
He smiled sweetly. "Thanks."
"How was your training with Johnny?"
He groaned. "Torture."
"Hmm, that means it worked," she smirked and kissed him on the lips. "Now look at you. My strong man is back. I've missed those legs."
He chuckled under his breath. "Hey, uh, there's something I need to tell you."
"What is it?" She asked and wrapped her arms loosely around his neck.
Miguel ran his hands up and down her sides. "Sensei and I are starting our own dojo."
Her face fell and she dropped her hands. "What? What did I say? I said no more karate! I thought we were going to teach you to dance instead?"
He furrowed her brows. "You said that while I was in a coma."
"Yeah, well, I assumed my voice traveled through your eardrums and planted itself into your brain but evidently it didn't," she grumbled and rolled her eyes. "Miguel, I don't think it's a good idea."
"Sydney, it's fine. I'm all better now, see," he said and did a little dance. "My legs are just fine."
"For now. What if something happens and you get hurt again?" She asked, her big brown eyes filled with concern.
Miguel pouted his lips at how cute she was and cupped her face in his hands. "Sydney, sweetheart, I promise everything is fine. I'll be careful, okay? But I'm doing this. I would really love if you did it with me."
Sydney sighed. "Mig, I'm already in dance. I can't do both."
"Says who?" Miguel questioned. "You can go to dance in the mornings and train with us in the afternoon."
"Okay, correction, I don't want to do both."
Miguel rolled his eyes at her dramatically. "Because you're lazy or you just really don't like karate?"
Sydney pouted. "I'm tired after dance, okay? You wouldn't want me to collapse while trying to kick someone's ass, wouldn't you?"
"No, we wouldn't want that," he teased. He cupped her face again. "Just please promise you'll think about it."
She could never resist those sweet brown eyes of his. She huffed in his face. "Fine."
He smiled in victory and brought her face forward, kissing her.
Today was Miguel's first day back at school. He was excited to go back but Sydney was feeling nervous. She was happy that he was going back but she was scared for him be back in the environment that got him hurt in the first place. She was still having problems with it herself. Miguel bounced his leg anxiously while staring at the building.
"Are you ready to be back?" Sydney asked while sitting in the driver's seat.
"I'm not sure," he admitted. He looked at her and smiled. "But I am glad to be seeing you more."
She grinned and pinched his cheek. "Listen, if you feel overwhelmed, then we can leave. I don't care what I'm doing. I'll drop everything for you."
He looked at her soft eyes. "How did I get so lucky?"
She hummed and tapped her chin. "Not sure. Those braces definitely worked miracles."
He rolled his eyes at her. "Come on."
Together, the couple walked hand and hand into school. Instantly, everyone's eyes were on Miguel. He was greeted by multiple smiles and hi's from the students.
A welcome back Miguel sign hung from the side of the railing and everyone clapped for him.
Sydney raised her brows and grinned up at him. "Guess you don't need my help after all."
He shook his head. "Nah, of course I do."
"El serpiente!" Hawk greeted and approached him.
Sydney's face fell slightly and she looked away, not engaging with him.
Yhe two of them did their handshake. "Welcome back man."
Miguel smiled. "Feels good to be back,"
Hawk glanced at Sydney and he frowned ever so slightly.
Sydney saw Demetri on the other side of the hall. "I'm gonna go say hi to Demetri," she said to Miguel. She gave Hawk the side eye as she walked off. "Hey D."
His arm was still in the bulky whit cast that went all the way up his forearm. He looked down at her. "Hey Syd. Miguel's back at school?"
She nodded and they walked down the hall to his locker. "Yeah, he's really happy to be back. He's Mr. Popular now."
Demetri chuckled. "Like girlfriend, like boyfriend."
She rolled her eyes hir gave a small smile. She motioned her head to the cast. "How are you feeling?"
Demetri shrugged. "It doesn't hurt anymore. I'm just trying to forget it happened."
She frowned slightly but nodded and sent him an assuring smile.
"There you are," miguel said when he came by her side.
"Hey, the comeback kid! Welcome back," Demetri greeted him happily. "I hope to make a similar triumphant return to the land of the mobile appendage masses."
Sydney rolled her eyes.
"What's up with the cast?" Miguel asked.
"Proximal radius fracture," Demetri answered.
"It smells." Yasmine butted in.
Sydney tried her hardest to groan out loud.
"I put a lemon rind down there to mitigate that," Demetri defended. He took a pen out of his flannel pocket. "The invitation for you to sign it still stands."
"Hard pass," the blonde denied. "At least when you used to be a thorn in my side you were getting me an A in science. Now you can't even do that because you're defective."
Sydney glared at her harshly. "If you're going to act like a bitch then I suggest you walk away."
Yasmine rolled her eyes and walked away, leaving the three of them to stand there.
"Well, at least I got one person to sign it," Demetri said and smiled at the brunette.
Sydney grinned back.
Miguel was still confused. "So, uh. . . how'd you break your arm?"
Demetri's face fell and he looked at Sydney. "You didn't tell him?"
She opened her mouth to say something but she couldn't find a response. She only sighed.
Demetri looked back at Miguel. "We have a lot to catch up on."
"I'm sorry I didn't tell you," Sydney said when she and Miguel walked into their next class together.
"I wish you would have. Hawk hurt you guys," he responded bitterly. They sat down at one of the desks. "I'll kill him."
Sydney shook her head. "No, don't. It's your first day back. You need to to relax."
"Syd, you've had bruises on your face for a week now. You lied to me and said you ran into a door only for me to find out it was from my best friend. How do you expect me to relax with that information?"
"Because I said so," she stated and leaned closer to him. "I'm sorry, okay? But if you're gonna do something at least do it when we're not in school. Counselor Blatt's on war path with the whole fighting thing and I don't want you getting in trouble."
Miguel sighed in defeat. "Okay. But not promises I won't say anything."
She pursed her lips. "I expected that. If you feel the need to punch anything, wait for me to be there."
"Deal."
Okay but like, chapter of Sydney teaching Miguel how to dance???👀
