Chapter Fifty Six
Primadonna
SYDNEY GROANED AND flopped down on Sam's bed. "I just don't get it. Why does everything feel like it's falling apart lately?"
"You guys are teenagers, Syd. Not everything between you guys is going to be sunshine and rainbows," Sam responded.
"If it was, there would be a lot more babies and suddenly we'd be living in a real life What Happened To Monday," Demetri added. He was spinning around in Sam's rolling chair.
Both girls looked at him weirdly. "This is a girl conversation. I'll see my way out," he muttered.
Sydney rolled her eyes. "I know Miguel and I have our ups and downs, but it feels like lately he's been blaming everything on me,"
"Did he say that?" Sam asked.
"No, but every time I try to find out what's wrong, he throws shots at me like it's my fault. Yesterday, he said he "can't act all perfect all the time". Like, what does that mean?"
"Syd, take it from someone like me," Demetri started and sat up straight in the chair. "Nobody in their right mind would ever believe that somebody like you would go for somebody like Miguel. He thinks that too, that's why he feels insecure around you. It's not because you're doing anything wrong, He just feels like he can't compete with you,"
Sydney furrowed her brows. "But he doesn't have to compete with me,"
"Yeah, when you're in a relationship, you're not suppose to compete with each other," Sam agreed.
"Right," he pointed at them. "But from Miguel's view point he has a very popular, very hot girlfriend who has every opportunity in the world to go to a very expensive and famous school and he can barely afford a car. It's kind of like me and Yasmine. I get insecure, too,"
Sydney's face fell and she looked down at her lap, picking at Sam's pillow with her nails.
Sam frowned. "Okay, but she still shouldn't have to feel bad for that,"
"I know," Demetri nodded. "But he has a right to his feelings, too. I'm on your side, Syd, I promise, I'm just saying talk to him. He can't stay mad forever."
Sydney looked back up at him and nodded. She continued to pick at the pillow.
Sam and Demetri left with Johnny for their training and Sydney was left with Daniel and the rest of the Eagle Fang students. Demetri's words played over and over again in her head and she tried to let them sink in, but her feelings were still hurt. She understood how Miguel was feeling but that didn't change anything. She had a right to her feelings, too.
Sydney stood far away from him when the lesson started. It caught the attention of the others. "You okay, Sydney?" Bert asked because she was on the other side of him.
She looked down at him and faked a smile. "I'm okay,"
Miguel stood beside Eli with his arms crossed, his eyes occasionally flickering over to her.
Eli looked between them couple and raised his eyebrows. "Dude, what did you do?"
Miguel looked at him in offense. "Why do you assume it's my fault?"
"Cause it usually is."
Daniel started the lesson and the Eagle Fang students gathered around the koi pond. Sydney hunched over and struggled to catch a fish.
"Damn it!" Mitch grunted. "How do they make it look so easy on Hillbilly Handfishin?"
Sydney gave him a weird look. "That's a thing?"
"Shit! This is impossible!" Eli exclaimed in anger.
"Patience," Daniel announced. "You'll figure it out,"
"I've been running out of patience, lately," Sydney said and reached for another fish but missed.
"I have an idea," Miguel said out loud, making them all look at him. He got in the water. "Come on, get in,"
"Seriously?" Sydney questioned.
"Yes, Syd, get in."
She rolled her eyes and took off her shoes. She slowly got in the water and the others followed.
"Follow my lead," Miguel instructed. "Walk in a circle,"
Sydney trudged through the water and they started circling the deck. Sydney watched carefully as the koi stayed close to the deck. "It's working. They're going under the board," Eli said in realization.
Sydney started to smile.
Miguel reached under the water and quickly pulled up a fish. He held it up proudly.
"We have a winner!" Daniel announced. "Good job, Miguel."
Miguel whirled around in the water so that he was facing Sydney and his face lit up in excitement. She chuckled at him and the Eagle Gangs cheered, splashing around in the water.
"Hey, Syd, can we talk?" Miguel asked hesitantly.
Sydney turned around and leaned her back against the door of her car. She crossed her arms. "Sure,"
He nodded and opened his mouth to talk, but hesitated again. "I-I don't know where to start,"
"Why didn't you tell me your mom couldn't pick you up yesterday?" She questioned.
"How'd you know that?" He asked with furrowed brows.
She shrugged. "We talk."
"I didn't tell you because. . ." he hesitated and sighed. "I guess I was just, I don't know, embarrassed,"
"And why did you start acting weird after the dinner we had?" She asked and leaned off her car.
"I-I don't know," he stuttered.
"And why did you yell at me when I tried asking you if something was wrong?" She asked, her voice darkening.
She was getting angry and Miguel started to get nervous. "B-Because, I-I—"
"And why is it every single time something happens, and I try to help you through it, you lash out at me and make me feel like it's my fault?" She spat and got in his face, her own face turning red.
He looked at her in guilt. "Because. . . I'm jealous, okay? I'm jealous because I know I'll never get to go to New York, and I don't have any talents, and I have nothing going for me right now,"
She went quiet and backed up slightly, waiting for him to continue.
Miguel sighed and looked down at his shoes briefly. "I don't mean to make you feel that way, and I'm sorry that I do. I just, I get in my own and it makes me think things that I shouldn't. When your mom was talking about your future, I got jealous and insecure, and the reason I get mad is because is because I've never had someone try and help me understand. I have mom and Yaya but they're kind of a given. I've never had some like like you assure me that everything's going to be okay,"
Sydney uncrossed her arms and slumped over slightly.
"I'm so sorry for what I said. I'm sorry for snapping at you like that," he continued.
"It's not the first time you've done it," she mentioned.
He sighed under his breath. "I know, I know, I apologize. I should never have disrespected you like that. I love you. I never want to make you feel like you're a problem, okay? Because you're not. You're everything to me,"
Sydney glanced down at her shoes. She heard his apologies so many times. He was always sincere and she knew that, but he did it again. Couples have their ups and downs, especially at their age, but Sydney wouldn't allow herself to be talked to like that, especially by a man.
When she looked back at him she saw love in his eyes. She loved Miguel so much and he loved her. What they had was stronger than a couple fights. She took a step forward and cupped his face. "Listen to me and don't say a word,"
He nodded quickly.
"I love you. I've been there for you through so much and I've defended you so many times. I don't do that for just anyone. I forgive you because I love you and I'm willing to look past our arguments and communicate with you so we can get through them. Just please, if you're ever feeling like this, tell me so we can work through it? I don't want to keep feeling this way. I don't want you to feel that way, either,"
Miguel quickly nodded. "I promise. I'm sorry."
Sydney leaned forward and kissed him quickly. "What my dreams are and what I wish for my future are for me to think about, okay? Not you. You have your own dreams and goals for your future and they don't have to look like mine. Whatever you want to do, I will support you because I'm your girlfriend and I wish for you to do the same,"
Miguel nodded again and leaned into her, wrapping his around around her waist in a hug. She wrapped hers around his neck. She felt him press a kiss to her neck. "I love you."
"I love you." She said back and laid her head on his shoulder.
Never let a man make you feel bad for the things you went in life. No matter if it's big or small, your dreams are YOUR dreams, not theirs.
With that being said, Miguel and Sydney are teenagers and they make mistakes. The only thing that matters is that they're able to communicate with each other
