Chapter 20

Rose had fobbed Ethan off with the excuse of working for the last two days, but as the wrap party that evening drew near, she was a bundle of nerves. She wasn't sure if he knew; she knew about him and Victoria. But she was so disappointed in him, she really didn't want to talk to him at the moment.

So she arranged to see George the next night-he was going to make her dinner at his apartment. But instead of waiting, she thought she would pop by and see if he was free for lunch today. He'd texted his address earlier, and she knew he was doing a morning and evening shift, so she hoped he'd be good for a bite to eat in-between.

She looked his address up on google maps and saw it was close to Tilly's. It was one of those rare, beautiful sunny English days, so she walked the few blocks to his.

It was so different from the country. The smells changed from block to block. The aromas of Indian curry, Italian pizza and Turkish kebabs made her more and more hungry the closer she got to George's.

There were so many people on the road, all tooting and yelling at each other. That was something she noticed they liked to do there-toot their horns. And it was freaking annoying. Many of the roads were so narrow and there were always cars parked either side. It gave her anxiety just watching other people try to navigate them.

But Chelsea was so close to everything she needed, including the subway. So when she could, she preferred to walk. There were so many things one missed when in a moving vehicle. Rose enjoyed taking in her surroundings, smelling the air, hearing the noises-whether good or bad. She found it calming-usually.

Before she knew it, she was standing at the door to his apartment building. There were four buttons, with three names next to them. George told her he was number four and that he preferred to keep his residence private, so he didn't advertise his name on the front of the building.

She was just about to buzz when someone pushed through the door. He smiled and kept walking. Instinctively, Rose grabbed the door before it closed. She wasn't sure if he was home. But it couldn't hurt to go straight up and knock on his door.

It was a four storey modern building and George was at the top. The only way up was up a stairwell. Reaching the top, she stood on a landing that was slightly bigger than your average size bathroom. In the corner was some kind of leafy plant. On closer inspection, she realised it was fake.

She was starving now, so she knocked on his door. But with the first knock, the door pushed open. She stood there, not too sure what to do. Should she knock again? Should she go in? Was something wrong?

She decided to slowly inch into his apartment and assess the situation. Surely he was home if his door was open? She pushed the door all the way open and walked a couple of feet into the entryway. She stood there and listened. Was that music she could hear?

As she walked in further, she could definitely hear muffled music. She went towards where it was coming from, then stopped at a door that was slightly ajar and heard muffled voices. She was now realising what she was doing was a bad idea. Something was off, but it was too late to turn back now.

Rose quietly pushed the door open another ten centimetres and looked into the room. She wasn't sure what she was expecting to find, but what she saw had been the farthest thing from her mind. It was George's bedroom and Rose was watching a naked girl, sitting on a naked George in his bed.

She pushed the door open further; the motion caught the attention of the naked occupants. George's eyes expanded in shock as the girl-who Rose now recognised as the valet from their first date, narrowed her eyes at Rose. And instead of getting off him, she picked up the pace.

"Dammit, Brandy, get off!" He yelled.

"Don't stop on my account," Rose said in anger and turned on her heel.

Just before she got to the front door, he caught up with her. He had put on a pair of track pants before running from his room. It was a pity he was such a dick, because his glistening chest was a sight to behold.

"How the hell did you get in?" was the first thing he asked.

"Someone left the door open, probably your new girlfriend."

"She's not my girlfriend," he spat.

Great, even better. Passed over for some random chick. She could picture Ethan saying, 'I told you so' as she stood there debating whether or not to knee George in the nuts.

"Were you even really interested in me?"

He sighed and ran a hand through his hair. "No. I asked you out to piss Ethan off."

"What kind of sick person does that?" She yelled.

He just shrugged. "Look, I'm sorry, okay. I was going to get you into bed then ghost you, but I actually enjoyed hanging out with you. And then when I saw how jealous it made Ethan, well, I just kept going along with it."

Out of everything he just said, the words Ethan and jealous were the ones that really stuck out.

"Ethan wasn't jealous, he just hates you. And with good reason!"

"He told you about me and his mother?"

"Yes, and I even gave you the benefit of the doubt. Thinking you had changed. What an idiot I turned out to be!"

"He's never told anyone about it," he said, more to himself, staring at the floor. Then he looked up at her. "He must really like you!"

"Don't be ridiculous."

"He's never bothered with anyone outside of his family as much as he has with you. We were best friends for years before I shagged his mom. You're the first girl I've seen him get upset over."

"He's back with Victoria," she said, getting sick of the conversation.

"That's probably because she's easy. You scare him."

"You're all a bunch of rich jerks who think you can treat others however you want. And I've had enough." She turned and was about to charge down the stairs when he yelled, "stop."

"I admit this isn't my finest moment. I was angry with Ethan and you unwillingly got caught in the middle. If it's any consolation, I had a lot of fun on our dates. But I like sex and struggle with monogamy, so it was always going to be doomed."

"Wow, such a charmer, George. You must be beating them off with a stick."

"I deserve that."

"Do me a favour, never call me again." She turned and carried on down the stairs.

"Best of luck with Ethan," he yelled as she kept walking .

"Get stuffed!" She yelled back.

Once Rose was back on the street, she took a deep breath to slow her racing heart. She stood by his building, processing everything she just witnessed. She was definitely angry, but also relieved, and maybe not as upset as she should have felt at that moment.

She didn't want to go back to her flat straight away, so she walked. Wherever her feet took her, it didn't matter. She played over and over in her head all her interactions with Ethan and George. In hindsight, she could see the red flags, but she wanted to have a bit of fun with an attractive guy who apparently liked her.

Ethan, though, was still an enigma. As far as she could remember, he showed no intentions other than being friends. And if he liked her as much as George seemed to think, then why did he carry on with Victoria in front of her.

She stopped at a wooden bench in the middle of a large park. She wasn't sure which one. It's not like she had really been paying attention to where she was going. Pulling out her phone, she looked at the time. Shit, it was only half an hour until the wrap party.

She opened up Google maps to find her exact location. Shit, she had walked for miles. Rather than ask Tilly's driver to come get her, she walked back. It would mean missing the wrap party, but she wasn't really in the mood to go, anyway.

It took her another hour to get home and when she walked through the door; she was surprised to find Ethan there waiting for her. She was beginning to think surprises weren't so fun anymore.

"Where the hell have you been? And why have you been ignoring my calls?"

"Hi, nice to see you too." She was tired now, and really not in the mood.

"Cut the crap, Rose. What's going on? Is it to do with George? Has he told you to stay away from me?"

"No, I've been avoiding you because of Victoria," she sighed.

He looked at her, confused. "What are you talking about?"

"Don't bother trying to deny it. I know you two are back together." Rose walked to the living room and flopped down on the couch, with Ethan quick on her heel and Tilly nowhere in sight.

"One: I don't know why you would think that, and two: if I was, what business is it of yours?"

She jumped to her feet even though they were killing her. "Excuse me, and what business was it of yours when it comes to me and George?"

"I was just trying to be a good friend, because I know George is a lowlife. Regarding Victoria, I'm a big boy and can take care of myself. Anyone would think you were jealous!" His voice rose as he finished his sentence.

Rose was silent as they stared at each other.

"Oh my god, you are jealous," he said, looking at her wide eyed.

"Whatever, I just can't believe you'd lower your standards to Victoria." She watched as his expression changed from one of surprise to anger.

"What, as opposed to perfect little Rose?"

"You don't need to be a jerk," she snapped.

"Me, the jerk?" His voice was getting loud again. "How many times have I made it clear I'm not interested in you, Rose? Or anyone else, for that matter?"

"Didn't stop you from shagging her before," she mumbled. She knew she sounded like a child, but she was so over it, she really didn't care. And what was with everyone telling her Ethan liked her? Because he clearly didn't.

"You're sounding rather petty now. At least Victoria doesn't pretend to be anything other than what she is."

"A slutty bitch?"

"Wow. Now who's stooping to her level?" He snapped.

"At least I can keep my legs shut!" She sulked, then flopped back down onto the couch and crossed her legs.

"That's it, I'm leaving. I thought you were different, Rose, but I guess I was wrong. You have no idea how disappointed I am right now."

"No more than me, I can assure you. Stupid Rose falls for stuck up snob who doesn't care about anyone but himself. And is the hump and dump type-what the hell was I thinking!"

Shit! Did she just admit she liked him out loud? To save face, she kept her annoying expression and then narrowed her eyes for good measure.

"You really think I'd be interested in you?" He said through clenched teeth.

Ouch, that hurt more than she cared to admit.

"You and me? What a joke!"

Rose didn't realise she was crying until the tears tickled her cheek.

"Get out of my house now!" Tilly yelled from the doorway.

"With pleasure."

And with that, he was gone.
