Chapter 2

Rose was uncharacteristically a bundle of nerves as she drove with Meg through the outskirts of London towards the studio, which sat on the fringes of the sprawling city. Before she knew it, the luminous letters spelling Sagewood loomed large above their heads. The chatty security guard Charlie waved them through the front gate with a rather charming smile and a flirty wink thrown Meg's way. The Nigerian man may have looked around fifty, but he still had it. As was clear by the way Meg blushed all the way down the main road of the lot.

Rose looked about at row upon row of massive, hanger-like buildings. Finally, coming to a stop next to Stage 3. It was another giant shed with a smaller office type building saddled next to it. Meg had warned it would seem daunting at first, but reassured her she'd be fine.

"Right, here we are, sweetie. Now stage 3 is where the interiors are being built, the Bennetts home, Netherfield, etcetera," Meg said as they exited the car and made their way towards a small door at the side of the sound stage.

"Oh, so they won't be using actual houses like in the other movies?"

"Exteriors yes, interiors no. The Director Jimmy Jackson wanted it this way. I tried to tell him using proper homes would feel more authentic, but no, he has a vision," Meg said as she waved her hands through the air above her head.

"Ah, okay. I guess it makes it easier with all the sets in one location."

"Hmm, here's hoping. At the end of the lot there's a replica nineteenth-century village that we'll be using as Meryton and then all the rest, gardens, forests, house exterior scenes and what-not are going to be shot in a couple of different locations, north of London and near Bath."

"Wow, that sounds so amazing. Pride and Prejudice is one of my favourite books. I can't wait to see it come together," Rose said with an excited grin.

"Me too, sweetie. Now follow me and we'll go get you all set up."

"Thanks again for this, Meg. I really appreciate it."

"It's no problem at all, dear. Tilly has nothing but praise for you and your dedicated work ethic. Now if you could rub some of that off on her, that'd be wonderful. That girl needs a good kick up the bottom."

They both smiled. Tilly really needed some sort of motivation to get her moving. Rose knew she'd struggled to come to terms with her mother's passing twelve years earlier. But living off her dad's money, shopping all day and drinking all night was not something she could, or he'd allow her to do forever. And she needed to realise that sooner rather than later. Rose couldn't imagine a life like that. All she had ever wanted was to become a nurse. All her studies aimed towards that one goal.

Hard work had been something her parents had ingrained into her from a young age. Of course, that was until her ex pointed out it was taking over her entire life. Now she was realising hard work was good, but in moderation. Life also needed to have a bit of fun and adventure mixed in too, and maybe even a sprinkling of love for good measure-if she was lucky.

Meg showed Rose around the place. It was a hive of activity. Sets being built, costumes being made, and several people running around like headless chickens, making sure everything was being done right. Introductions were made amongst the crew and Rose was shown to her desk just outside Meg's office. She met the other producers and assistants during a meeting to discuss their roles more and what they expected of her. By the end of day one, Rose was so excited. It would take her some time to figure out where everything was, but she knew she'd manage. Then, just before it was time to go home, Meg introduced her to Rolly. Rolly was going to be Rose's for the entire shoot.

"Go on, take her for a spin," said Meg.

"Are you sure?"

"Go for it, sweetie. I wanted to have a word with Jimmy, anyway. Go check out the rest of the lot and I'll meet you back here in about half an hour."

"Excellent," said Rose in a mock Monty Burns voice, while she tapped her fingertips together. A telltale sign: The Simpsons had been one of her favourites growing up.

She didn't need to be told twice, so she jumped in the driver's seat of the little blue golf cart and sped off-well, as fast as poor old Rolly could go, anyway. The day was getting on, so everywhere she looked, people were packing up for the day. She got a few waves, a couple of winks, and one irate gentleman waving his fist and screaming at her to watch where she was going. After a quick look at her watch, she realised it was time to head back. Then, just as she was about to turn the corner of Stage 3, a door opened out onto the road. She was too close and tried to swerve away, but wasn't quick enough and pushed the door shut with the back wheel.

Rose screeched to a halt just in time to hear a yelp from the other side of the door, followed by a lot of swearing-very unladylike swearing. She jumped off the cart and ran towards the entrance to help her poor victim. As she opened it, her eyes bulged. Sitting on the ground, rubbing her elbow, was Victoria Moretti.

"Oh my goodness, I'm so sorry! I didn't see the door until it was too late and I tried to swerve, but..." Rose stopped talking as Victoria looked up at her with stoney eyes. Rose reached out her hand to help her up, but Victoria just swatted it away.

"Don't touch me, you stupid imbecile. You could have killed me, you... you... you idiot!" Victoria seethed. Pulling herself up off the ground, she took a step forward with narrowed eyes and clenched fists.

Rose took a step back, taken by surprise at Victoria's fury. She didn't need to call Rose names; she had apologised and offered to help her up. Just as she thought the beautiful actress was about to sock her one, Meg arrived.

"Oh, Victoria sweetie, I didn't realise you were here today."

"I came in for a fitting and thought I'd look through the sets before heading home, then to my horror I nearly become a hit-and-run victim-"

"I wasn't running. I stopped to help, and I apologised."

"Who is this buffoon, Meg, and why is she still on my set?"

"Rose is not a buffoon, Victoria. She is my assistant. I told her to have a drive around the lot, it being her first day and all."

"Well, I don't want her here. Get rid of her, Meg!" Victoria stood in front of them with her arms crossed. The scowl on her face not even taking away from her dark Italian beauty. Her beauty mark twitched above her collagen filled lips and her quite large fake boobs heaved under her rigid limbs. She looked ready to combust.

Rose looked disappointedly down at her feet. She couldn't believe it, fired on her first day. How humiliating!

"I will do no such thing! Rose is a family friend and a fantastic assistant." A slight stretching of the truth there, but Rose was in no position to correct her. "And may I remind you Victoria that this is not your set and there are hundreds of brilliant actresses who could replace you in a heartbeat."

"But-"

"Victoria, go home. No one was hurt. Rose apologised and she'll make sure nothing like this happens again. Won't you Rose?"

"Oh, no. I will be on my best driving behaviour at all times, from now on, promise," Rose said in a rush.

"Just stay out of my way, you dumb-"

"Victoria!"

"Whatever, Meg!" Victoria barged through the doorway, pushed Rose out of the way, and stalked off towards the parking lot. Then, just as she was about to get into her Porsche, she turned and flipped the bird at them. Meg just shook her head as they watched her speed off.

"Sorry about that, Rose. Like I said, she can be a real nasty bitch. Actually, she's always a nasty bitch. You just learn to deal with it," Meg sighed.

"I am so sorry. It wasn't my intention to piss her off. I'll quit if my being here is a problem now."

"Don't be silly, dear. I'm pretty sure she has it in for half the crew, anyway. She can just get over herself and deal with it."

"I feel so bad now, and I was having such a great day."

"Trust me when I say she is only one, in a sea of many and the many are wonderful to work with. You'll fit in just fine. Although, you'll probably want to stay out of Victoria's way, it'll just be easier."

Rose nodded, and they headed back towards Meg's car. It was getting late and Tilly was waiting patiently at home to hear all about how her day had gone. Not quite the first impression she wanted to make, but there was nothing she could do about it now. Hopefully, the other actors would be a lot friendlier, including Ethan. Now that was one fine specimen she was very much looking forward to meeting.
