Chapter 19
As Rose walked along the pavement towards Ethan’s trailer, she couldn’t quite believe it was the end. It was the last day of filming, and Rose would head back to the studio with Meg in a mere few hours.
The day was overcast, rather appropriate, she thought. The mood on set had been bittersweet. Happy to see filming almost complete, but mostly sad that the experience was almost over.
She walked past the facade of Rosings park—or rather Hatfield house, which was about an hour’s drive north of London. Another grand home that had gorgeous gardens and surrounding park that fit Rosings perfectly.
Rose had actually begged Meg to drive out early that morning so she could watch them film the last scene, which was Lizzie strolling through the park where she bumped into Darcy and Colonel Fitzwilliam and discovered that they were staying there with their aunt.
Then, as they called cut, she watched Victoria flirt shamelessly with the guy who played the colonel. It was obvious she was trying to make Ethan jealous, but it failed miserably. He was busy chatting with Jimmy and didn’t even notice.
Things between her and Ethan had been good, too. They were friends again and had spent many evenings hanging out in the hotel pub with Murray, Cass, and a few of the others.
Victoria turned up once, only to be ignored by everyone and never returned. It wasn’t surprising though; she had treated everyone horribly on set. Unfortunately, you reap what you sow and no one wanted anything to do with her by that stage.
Things with George had been going okay as well. She wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt and even though Ethan had warmed her off him; she wanted to work things out for herself. His opinion was very biased, after all. Rose didn’t like the fact that George had had an affair with a married woman—a much older married woman. But that was in the past and George had said it had been a mistake and he’d learned from it.
She had no reason not to believe him, and both Ethan and George had accepted that she was friends with both. Well, that’s what they had said, anyway.
All things considered, life was pretty good at that moment. Meg had offered her another assistant's job on her next movie set. Rose had decided she wanted to go back to health care though and turned her down, only to be offered a position of onset medic—which she happily accepted. Pride and prejudice had been a fun distraction, but she was really looking forward to being back in her comfort zone of medicine.
Tilly had also started her counselling and given up drinking completely. Daniel had been so good for Tilly. He’s definitely one of the good ones. He even apologised to Rose for being rude to her after seeing her with George. Ethan and Daniel were together in their dislike of George, but respected Rose’s decision to keep dating him.
She hadn’t seen him a lot over the time they had been dating, but they spoke on the phone a few times a week. Unfortunately, they were both so busy, so Rose was really looking forward to having a break once the movie wrapped and could hopefully spend more time with him.
Rose finally reached the parking lot where all the trailers were parked. Ethan’s was next to Victoria’s at the far end. Rose had avoided her as much as possible during the last days of shooting, but they still had to work together, so when they interacted, it was always a chilly affair. Victoria was definitely one part of the job she wouldn’t miss and as of one hour ago, she no longer had to deal with her.
Hopefully she wasn’t nearby now, because Rose wanted to see Ethan to congratulate him on a job well done and make a plan for the wrap party in a few days. Rose tried inviting George, but he declined, deciding it would be better to avoid Ethan.
It was probably for the best, but it would’ve been nice to see him. He said he was doing a bunch of double shifts over the next couple of weeks because of the hospital being short staffed and they wouldn’t see each other until after Rose was back from her France trip with Tilly.
Rose waved to the trailer hire guys as they were hitching up two of the trailers to take away. By the next day, that same lot would be completely empty and they would all be back in London, except for the crew that had to pack up the costumes, filming equipment and other bits and pieces.
Finally, at Ethan’s trailer, she knocked on the door. It took a second before it eventually opened. But instead of finding Ethan there it was Victoria standing in the doorway with wet hair, wearing Ethan’s Pink Floyd tee. Rose raised a brow.
“What are you doing here?” Rose asked in surprise.
“What does it look like? Having a shower, of course,” Victoria replied, rolling her eyes.
“Where’s Ethan?”
“In the shower,” she said, like it was no big deal.
“But I...” Rose trailed off, not quite believing what she was seeing and hearing.
“We’re busy, so if you don’t mind—get lost!”
Victoria shut the door in Rose’s face and she just stood there, unable to move. What was he thinking going back there with her? Was he that desperate for sex?
She slowly walked away from what was left of trailer city and in a daze went directly to Meg’s car. As her brain was processing everything, she became increasingly angry and... jealous?
She had George, she should not be jealous!
All sane thought left her and all she wanted was to go back to London. She texted Meg to ask where she was and if they could leave early.
Meg was stuck at the other end of the estate with Jimmy, making sure their expensive equipment was being packed appropriately. Meg estimated she’d be another two hours. Rose’s phone started ringing, snapping her out of her Victoria induced funk.
It was Ethan. He probably wanted to explain away Victoria’s presence in his trailer. Well, she didn’t have time for his excuses, so she ignored it. If she had to wait, then she’d wait in her favourite spot.
It was a secluded corner of one of the smaller and less grand gardens that hadn’t been used for filming. So it was nice and quiet and far from the hustle and bustle of the crew packing up. She often went there to talk to George, not that he answered often—being so busy at work.
She sat on the beautifully carved wooden bench seat. It was large and surprisingly comfortable. The perfect place to wait for Meg. Her hand brushed over the carved roses and vines. It was amazing the talent some people possessed.
Her grandfather had shared that talent. Perhaps that’s why she enjoyed it there so much. He died just before she graduated nursing school and even though they had lived in different parts of the country—meaning she only saw him a few times a year. He was always so proud of her.
She wondered what he would think of what she was up to now? She was pretty sure he just wanted her to enjoy life and be happy. The sun peaked through the grey clouds and she sat back, closing her eyes and enjoyed the warmth while it lasted. It wasn’t long before it disappeared again, leaving her slightly chill. She supposed she should be grateful it wasn’t raining.
“Thought I might find you here.”
Rose opened an eye and watched as Meg, with her rather strange looking rainbow hair, sat next to her.
“Am I that predictable?” Rose said, without smiling.
“Are you ok, sweetie?” Good old Meg always knew when something was amiss.
“When I went to Ethan’s trailer, Victoria answered wearing his t-shirt—and her hair was wet.”
“Ah. And what did she say?”
“That he was in the shower and then told me to go away because they were busy. What does he see in her? I just don’t get it.” Rose tucked her hands under her thighs and kicked at the pebbles underneath her feet.
“I’m sorry, sweetie. I know you and Ethan were back on good terms. But he is just a man and men have certain needs and Victoria seems to be a very willing participant,” Meg said, patting Rose’s knee.
“Gross Meg! But you want to know the worst part? I’m so freaking jealous, not that I have any right to be, but I can't help it. I have George—kind of, and I should be content. But no—I’m freaking angry at him for picking her over me.”
“I get it, honey. But you have been stuck in a bit of a bubble with Ethan over the last few months. Maybe now that filming is finished, it will give you some perspective. And some more time with George might help too?”
“I guess you’re right,” Rose said with a sigh.
“Come.” Meg stood up. “I snuck away early. Let’s get out of here and have a girls’ evening at Tilly’s.”
Rose nodded. “Thanks, you’re the best. “
“I know sweetie, I know.” She smiled at Rose and then pulled her up off the bench.
They waved goodbye to the crew as they left, and to Rose’s relief, she saw neither Ethan nor Victoria. The wrap party was in a few days, and she was already dreading it.
