Chapter 11
"That's a wrap! Well done everyone. After four days of non-stop dancing, you all deserve a drink." Wolf whistles filled the room as Jimmy called the last cut on filming the ball scene. "And a round of applause for all of our wonderful dancers-this was their last day of filming. You have all done amazing at bringing regency England to life and your hard work and dedication was inspiring. I wish you all the best-onwards and upwards!"
"Aye, I'm fair plucked. Let's get sloshed!" Murray announced to those closest to him.
"Yes, one last hurrah. What do you all say?" Kenny questioned, his eyes becoming watery.
"The Cock and Bull pub in thirty?" Alisha added as she put her arm around Kenny for a side cuddle.
"Sounds good to me," Rose said as a bunch of the other dancers nodded in unison. As they dispersed, they spread the word to the rest of the cast and crew.
Once changed, Rose was heading for the sound stage side door when she happened upon Ethan and Victoria smiling and whispering to each other by the exit. She couldn't hear what they were saying, but once Ethan looked up and noticed her, he quickly cleared his throat and said in a forced tone, "I'll um... see you later."
Victoria turned and when she saw Rose, a look of disgust replaced her smile. "Oh great, it's you," she spat out.
"Victoria, be nice." Ethan warned.
"Whatever. I gotta go." She pushed through the door, slamming it shut behind her.
After the incident involving Rose's shin, they had swapped her and Kenny back to their original group with Murray and Evelyn. A decision that Rose wholeheartedly agreed with. The last thing she needed was a target on her back-getting in Victoria's way was proving hazardous to her health. And she should still get a little screen time to show off to her family and friends back home.
It hadn't really helped either, that Ethan had decided Rose wasn't so bad after all. He'd been much friendlier, to the point where he had said a cherry 'hi' and 'bye' for the last three days. Rose still found it a little odd not being rude to each other all the time, but it was nice to be on friendly terms with one of the hottest guys on the planet.
"Are you going tonight?" Ethan asked her once Victoria had left.
"Oh, for sure. Murray sings up a storm when drunk. And that man loves to drink," she said, smiling at him. "Plus, it will be the last time I get to see a lot of them. What about you?"
"I'm not sure. The Cock and Bull doesn't really sound like my cup of tea." He smiled, and they both laughed. It really was the most ridiculous name.
"Well, if you're hungry, they do a really mean pork pie. Plus, what better way to get to know your fellow cast and crew than with a few drinks to calm the nerves. I'm sure Murray would appreciate the gesture."
"Who says I want to get to know them?"
Rose looked at him for a second. He had grown serious again. After their conversation the other day, she realised he was a lot more shy than he let on. She was sure he didn't intentionally want to be excluded, but she guessed he had just gotten used to covering up his awkwardness with hostility. Well, no more, she decided. He was going to join them at the pub, and she would make sure he had a great time.
"Come on, the first round is on me. Plus, I need a ride," Rose said, trying to convince him.
He smiled and rolled his eyes. "Fine. I suppose I can't leave you stranded here."
"No, you can't." Rose smiled sweetly in return, biting her lower lip.
Ethan stared for a few seconds in silence. Rose stared back. Good lord, he had delicious looking chocolate eyes. Time seemed to stand still. Then a door in the distance slammed shut, breaking the spell.
Ethan cleared his throat. "Shall we be off, then? My car's this way." Rose followed him out to the carpark and let out a low whistle when he opened the passenger door of a black Ferrari for her.
"Someone's overcompensating!" Rose said, smirking.
"What can I say? I appreciate pretty, overpriced things." Rose had to laugh. Was he just talking about cars?
They didn't have to drive far, as the 'Cock and Bull' was only a few miles down the road. Rose quickly messaged Meg, telling her she was with Ethan and that she'd find her own way home. Meg replied with a winky-kiss emoji. Once they'd pulled up into the carpark, Ethan hesitated.
"What's wrong?" Rose asked.
"I'm not an idiot Rose, I know everyone in there doesn't really like me."
"Maybe they just need to get to know you more outside of work?"
"Maybe?" He replied.
"Come on, let's go get sloshed."
"Good idea!"
A few hours later Murray was on his chair belting out 'I'm Gonna Be'.
"But I would walk five hundred miles, and I would walk five hundred more." He smiled at Kenny. "Just to be the man who walked a thousand miles to fall down at your door."
Rose leaned in and whispered to Ethan, who was sitting next to her at the far end of the table they shared with Murray, Kenny, Alisha, and Evelyn. "Murray is so cool. I need to pee."
Ethan leaned back and whispered. "Yeah, he's okay. I need another drink."
They both shoved their heavy limbs off the wooden tabletop and walked to the middle of the busy pub, where they then headed in different directions. Rose took a handful of steps before she realised she was heading for the bar. She turned and headed back towards the loo, passing Ethan on the way.
"Wrong way."
"Yeah, me too," he replied.
Luckily, the line was short. Rose had been holding on for a bit and ended up doing the longest wee imaginable. She then went back to their table. Ethan was back in his seat, another gin and tonic rolling between his fingers and another blackcurrant and cider for Rose in front of her empty chair.
"Oh, yay, thanks," she said.
He looked up at her as she stood over him, and a laugh burst from his luscious lips.
"You, um... have bubbles in your hair."
"Yeah, sure." Rose sat down, picked up her drink, and took a big gulp.
"Have no fear. I'll defend your honour against that heinous bubble blob," he said, in his best prince charming voice.
He twisted rose in her seat to face him; he scooped the big blob off her head and held it out in his palm. "See."
"Oh, how did that get there?" She asked, genuinely confused.
"Maybe it was the bubble monster?" They both looked at each other for a second, then burst into fits of laughter.
"Aye, and what's so funny over here?" Murray asked, stopping next to them on his way to the bar.
Everyone else had migrated to Murray's end of the table throughout the evening to be entertained by his Scottish Ballads. Leaving Ethan and Rose to amuse themselves and amuse themselves, they did.
"Wait... have you always had ginger hair?" Ethan asked Murray-who just rolled his eyes and carried on walking to the bar.
"Johnny, me main-man, I think ye need to cut those two off," Murray said, pointing towards Rose and Ethan.
Rose threw her hands in the air and yelled, "It wasn't us."
"Consider them cut off," said Johnny, the barman.
"Boooooo!" Rose and Ethan cried out in unison.
"Behave yourselves, you two," said Murray, giving them a stern look.
"Yes, mum," Rose replied, giggling away. Ethan joined in.
At that moment, Ethan's phone buzzed.
"Oh, yay, Ethan has a friend," Rose shouted enthusiastically.
He frowned at her before frowning at his screen. Then he groaned. "Great. What?" he answered in a childish, whiny voice. "None of your beeswax." He continued.
Rose snorted before saying, "beeswax, what are you, twelve?"
"Shush woman. No, not you-Rose. Yes, the annoying assistant."
"Hey!" Rose said, crossing her arms.
"Please don't." He said down the phone.
"Don't what?" Rose whispered not-so-quietly.
"The wicked witch is threatening to come down here," he said, putting his hand over the top speaker.
"I can hear you, you dumb-ass!" Rose heard Victoria scream down the line.
"Oh shit. Hang-up, hang-up," Rose said in mock horror.
He turned his screen off. "There, she's gone."
"You are in big trouble when I get there, you stupid idiot," Victoria shouted again.
"Dammit!" He jabbed at his phone furiously, trying desperately to turn it off.
"Oh, for the love of God." Murray grabbed Ethan's phone and pressed the call end button. "Maybe you should hide under the table before she gets here?" He was joking, of course.
"Oh, shit. He's right. Get down here," Ethan said, grabbing Rose by the sleeve and pulling her down with him.
"Now what?" She asked, her legs bent to her chest, with her arms wrapped around them.
"Has anyone told you your eyes are really pretty?" Ethan said to her.
"Yes."
"Oh."
"Has anyone ever told you you're ridiculously good-looking?" Rose said to him.
"Yes."
"Oh."
They both burst into more fits of laughter.
"There you are!" Victoria's mean looking face appeared under the table.
"Ahhh!" Rose squealed with fright.
"How did you get here so quickly?" Ethan asked in surprise.
"I was at work and I called you from my car. What the hell are you doing under the table-with her?" Victoria stared daggers at Rose.
"She's my drinking buddy, wicked-I mean Victoria."
"Get up," she seethed. She stood waiting, tapping her foot against the old wooden floorboards.
"Sorry," Ethan silently mouthed to Rose.
"Me too," she mouthed back.
He reluctantly got up, and Rose watched as Victoria hauled him out of the pub from her cosy spot on the floor.
The next minute, Kenny's head came into view. "He definitely likes you."
