18 - Too close

"Yoru!" [F/n] screamed, dashing through the door of the infirmary. She saw Yoru laying down on the infirmary bed, holding his head in pain. Sage was by his side looking at her tablet to check the data she collected. "Sage, what happened?!"

Yoru grunted, eyes remaining close. "Shut up, noob."

She quickly lowered her voice and walked to Sage's side. The woman turned her body to face her, eyes still focus on the screen. "I have no clue. The radianite inside him is very unstable."

[A/n] frowned, clenching her fists. "What does that even mean? D-did something happen last mission that we didn't notice? Is he going to be alright, Sage?"

"Stop talking like I'm dead already," he sighed, sitting on the edge of the bed.

"You should rest, Yoru. I need to examine you again," Sage continued then looked at the short agent next to her. "I need to wake Brimstone up to let him know. Stay here and keep an eye on him, alright? I don't want him to move until I'm back."

Yoru clicked his tongue, not even trying to hide his annoyed expression. The Chinese agent glared at him and Yoru did not add anything more and just laid back down. "I will don't worry," the other woman reassured her with a smile.

Sage left the room, leaving the two young agents together in this silent room. [A/n] took a chair and placed it next to his bed. She wore a frown and looked worryingly at her friend. She hated the sight of her friends being hurt, even if it was nothing but a small cut. When she heard from Phoenix that Yoru was found unconscious on the ground, she rushed to his side. It was not like him which added to her worries. Suddenly, she felt a hand on her head. He messed her hair and smirked down at her.

"You should see your face, you look horrible," he teased, pointing at her worried eyes. She knew he was trying to make her feel better but it did not help.

"You're looking worst than me," she commented with a pout.

Yoru laughed, taking his butterfly comb out of his pocket before playing with it. Then, his smile dropped as his eyes seemed to find themselves lost in the whiteness of the room. [A/n] wanted to question him about what happened but Yoru was not one to talk about himself so she did not want to force him to talk - if he wanted to, he would do it on his own. [F/n] tried to distract him by talking about her day and Killjoy and Raze's shenanigans of the day. Yoru listened to her, mostly lacking any expression, sometimes chuckling a bit at her silliness.

"[A/n]," he said her name, stopping her in her speech. She quickly stopped and focused all her attention on him. "I need to talk radiant to another."

"I'm all ears." She nodded, her voice sounding unusually serious.

He paused for a moment, sighing. It must be difficult for him to make confessions. "I started... seeing and hearing strange things in the rift. Following this, I've started to feel... different. Something is changing within me like some sort of... mutation." [A/n] frowned at his statement, trying to make sense of what he was saying. "I know my body better than anyone and I know for a fact that something is changing. Have you ever experienced that?" He turned his attention to her now, expecting some kind of answer that would prove he was not going crazy.

She pondered for a moment, a hand under her chin. "I cannot remember anything similar happening to me." Yoru seemed disappointed, his head laying back on the bed. "But I know that when my sense of danger started to develop, my body felt strange, like a mutation as you said. But I was still a young radiant back then." She stayed silent for a moment, processing the new information. "If radiants can develop new abilities, it's quite a discovery. I've never heard of it." She snapped her head to Yoru who stared back at her. "We need to try this out now."

Yoru smirked, excitement could be read on his face. "Sage told us to stay here."

[A/n] smirked back, leaning forward, elbows on her knees. "But she'll be more than happy if we come back with results ourselves."

It was easy for these two agents to go unnoticed. [A/n] put on her camouflage and Yoru used his rift to move. [A/n] could not feel Yoru around when he was in his rift but they were heading together to the practice range to test Yoru's abilities so she was not worried about losing track with him. On their way, she saw Sage walking to the infirmary with Brimstone. Silently, she apologized and hurried to the range.

Once she was there, Yoru was already here, seated and panting. Taking off her camouflage, she hurried to his side and kneeled before him, staring up at his tired face.

"You're alright, Yoru?"

He nodded, standing up. "You're slow, shorty."

She rolled her eyes, wondering why she worried in the first place. "We're about the same size, Yoru." He was only slightly taller than her.

"So, genius, where do we start?" he asked, crossing his arms.

"You have not tried to use your abilities at all except going in and out your rift?" He nodded his head. "You can still teleport?"

She saw him concentrate, harnessing the rift that covered his right hand. Then, after a minute he teleported to another place in the room. The loud sound of his gatecrash ability echoed in the room. [A/n] brought a hand to her face and noticed the marks on the ground.

"Did you always leave traces behind?"

Yoru quirked an eyebrow and looked at his feet. "No."

[A/n] had an idea suddenly. There had to be something that changed with his teleport ability. "Can you do that again?" Yoru seemed skeptical but followed her lead and repeated the same action. "Don't teleport though. Do you feel like you can do something different?"

Yoru closed his eyes to concentrate, his entire focus on the rift tether. All of a sudden, [A/n] snapped her head behind her at the sound of his ability, her highly developed survival instinct warning her of something sneaking up on her. But nothing but the strange blue traces on the ground was there. She looked back at Yoru who was breathing heavily, a satisfied look on his face.

"Wow," she said impressed. "It almost even fooled me."

Yoru seemed happy to hear that, his arrogance showing. "Not so difficult to sneak up on you, huh?"

She rolled her eyes, his attitude getting to her nerves. "Let's move on."

They continued to experience with his abilities, minutes turning to an hour. Yoru seemed awfully tired but he kept going, needing to know more. [A/n] had often tried to stop him but he did not care and pushed himself to his limits.

Indeed, Yoru's power had grown to an extent that surprised both of them. The clone that he was able to summon was the most impressive. His appearance was an exact copy of the Japanese agent, even recreating the gun he was holding. It could not however be controlled, it only moved in a straight light then exploded, flashing the enemies around it. Yoru could not summon more than one however, it seemed to tire him out quite quickly.

[A/n] typed a few data on her device to make a report for Brimstone and Sage later on. Suddenly, her brain alarmed her that something was not right. She turned her attention back to Yoru who seemed to be in pain and crouching on the ground. She hurried to his side, getting on her knees.

"Hey, we should take a break, alright?" she said, worryingly, putting her arms around him.

He nodded without protesting and let her carry him. Stumbling on his feet, he leaned forward, barely able to catch himself. [A/n] tried to keep him steady, her arms around his torso while his were around her shoulders. Her heart skipped a beat, suddenly feeling nervous. She had never been this close to her Japanese friend before. She could smell the vanilla scent that rested in the crook of his neck. She did not mean to stay there for long but the sudden proximity surprised both of them.

"I hope I'm not disturbing your fun," a familiar voice called out from the doorway. The two of them looked up, still in the arms of each other, and saw the French agent. He was smiling, but not the kind of genuine smile, no, this one hid a certain bitterness. His eyes were closed so it was difficult to decipher his expression. Finally, realizing who it was, [A/n] tried to step away but Yoru kept her close.

"Y-Yoru!" she whispered, trying to push him away.

"Don't you want to toy with him a bit?" he asked, a smug expression on his face. She rolled her eyes, shaking her head. "Oh, come on," he spoke up again, making sure to whisper so he would not hear. "Don't you want to see your man jealous?"

She glanced back at him, his arms were crossed as he stood by the doorframe. The more they stayed like that, the more it got to his nerves. Then, he saw Yoru leaning closer to her face. That was stepping too far. Blood rushed to his face as he summoned his handgun.

"Yoru, mon ami," he spoke up again, his composure slowly falling, "please, step away."

Yoru chuckled, pulling the woman to his chest, she quietly complained to make him stop, but she was also curious to see him jealous. When she glanced at his annoyed expression, she found him very hot. "What's wrong, Chamber? Do you need anything?" he teased, stroking her hair.

"Step. Away."

His warning became a menace, his grip tightening around his Headhunter. If a look could kill, Yoru would have died multiple times already. Chamber walked forward towards them, his pace fast. "You wouldn't shoot me," Yoru chuckled, rolling his eyes playfully.

"Sage is here for a reason," was his response.

The Japanese agent became less confident about staying around here. He looked back at [A/n], ruffling her hair. "Good luck."

Before she had time to process what he meant, he went through his rift, putting his samurai mask on, and disappeared. She stood there, speechless, still looking where Yoru was just a moment ago. Then, she froze in place when she felt him behind her. Her instinct warned her that she was in danger and that she should run away. She tried to take a step forward, using her camouflage to slip out of his sight. But it was too late for that. She felt a hand grabbing her wrist, pinning her against the wall. She closed her eyes, feeling the coldness of the metal wall on her back. When she opened them again, she was greeted by Chamber's angry expression very close to her. His arms were on each side of her smaller frame, preventing her from escaping. His eyes were glaring down at hers and felt almost cold. She swallowed the lump in her throat and tried to put on her best smile.

"Hey, honey, I'm sorry I didn't text you back." He stayed silent, not moving a muscle, just looking at her dead in the eyes. She started to feel nervous but, strangely enough, this look made him sexier than usual. "It's not what you're thinking, alright? Yoru wasn't feeling well so I tried to help him and-"

"When are you going to stop your nonsense?" His voice was cold, his frown growing. He leaned closer, his lips just a few inches apart from hers. She pursed her lips together, shutting them tight. She just could not resist him when he was like that. She was supposed to feel bad for leaving him hanging when she was supposed to come home with him but he turned her on more than anything. He took her chin between his fingers, keeping her in place. "I wonder what you think you're doing, having fun with some other men. Do you need a reminder? Do I need to make sure you never forget who you belong to?"

She tried to open her mouth but the man covered it with his own, his tongue exploring the inside of her wet walls. She let out a moan, surprised by the harshness of the kiss. [F/n]'s legs started to weaken, unable to keep up with his rough movements. Chamber put a knee between her legs, his body pressed against hers. She could feel her need between her legs grow. He would slightly move his knee to make her needier, small muffled moans escaped from her lips.

She felt hot, aroused, becoming completely unaware of her environment. But, when she expected him to go further, he stepped away. Her body felt suddenly heavy, almost making her drop to the ground. She caught herself just in time, pouting at the French man. His low chuckle made her quiver.

He got closer once more, holding her chin up. "I hope you understood now."

"Y-yes, da- Sir!"

He smirked, letting go of her. "Good."

Vincent turned around and walked towards the door. [A/n] brought a hand to her mouth, cheeks as red as tomatoes. Did I just almost call him daddy?! She was dying inside, not knowing where this nickname came from.

"Oh, by the way," Chamber's voice brought her back to reality. She jumped, staring at him in panic. He looked very amused by her reaction. "Sage is very mad. You should go see her and apologize, mon amour. I will be waiting for you at home."

[A/n] nodded and hurried out of the room, still feeling troubled and flustered because of this man. As she went past him, she could see his smirk. She stuck out her tongue at him and walked towards the infirmary, hoping Sage would be there.

"[A/n]!" a voice yelled from behind her as soon as she stepped out. It was the person she was looking for.

She turned around with the best smile she could put on. "Sage! I was looking for you," she said, walking to her, linking her arm with hers. "So, I tried to chase after Yoru but I could not find him! It's so hard to follow him when he is in his rift! I just looked away for a minute and-"

"Don't waste your breath, Yoru told us everything already." Fuck. "He told us it was your idea as well."

"Man, he could have at least not thrown me under the bus."

"Now, to Brim's office. He's in a very bad mood because of you two by the way."

That was going to be one hell of a night.

Sage led [A/n] to the commander's office where Yoru was already sitting in one of the chairs, arms crossed. He turned his head around and smirked at her. She gritted her teeth at him and sat next to him. In front of them was Brimstone, whose hair and beard were all over the place. He looked angry. The two younger agents kept their mouths tightly shut and waited to be scolded for the next hour.

It took a long time, a very long time. Brimstone had spent the first half of their time in there re-reading the rules and safety protocols. They had barely listened to this part, having heard this a thousand times already. Then, they spent the rest of the time talking about Yoru's condition and this sort of mutation he was going through. Sage also seemed surprised but thought it made sense regarding the unstable radianite peaks in him. They felt tired now, just looking forward to reaching their bed.

"Are you going back to Chamber's?" he asked, yawning.

She nodded. "I don't have much choice. If I ditch him again, he'll probably kill me."

Yoru laughed, turning at a corner to go to his room. "See you tomorrow, if you make it out alive that is."

[A/n] rolled her eyes and left the base to go back to Chamber's penthouse. It was cold outside and very dark. The roads were deserted with very few lamposts to lighten her path to his home. The setting was very creepy but she was used to going down this path on her own now, and she could defend herself if needed. However, something felt off. She could swear there was someone watching her. She had had this feeling for a few days now whenever she was alone. Shaking off this feeling, she hurried to safety.

"I'm home!" she shouted from the doorway, taking off her shoes. Strangely enough, Chamber was not answering.

She walked in, carefully stepping inside in case there was an intruder. The strange impression of being watched left as soon as she entered the building. However, all her worries left as soon as she spotted him. He was soundly asleep on the couch. He had his glasses off, nicely resting on the coffee table, along with his tie and vest that were on the couch next to him. His shirt was slightly opened, showing part of his muscular chest that raised then fell to the rhythm of his breathing. A warm smile spread across her face when she saw his sleeping face. He must have been so tired while waiting for her and he just fell asleep right here. Taking off her coat, she carefully sat down next to him to observe his face. She just loved looking at his sleeping expression. He looked so peaceful for once.

Suddenly, a pair of arms surrounded her. Chamber hugged her tightly, not opening his eyes, and hid his face in the crook of her neck. He breathed her in, her sweet scent calming him. "You took a long time," he mumbled, his voice hoarse from waking up.

She stroked his hair, kissing his temple. "I'm sorry, sweetheart, Brim talks a lot." She massaged the top of his head and felt his muscles relaxing instantly. "We should go to bed." He grumbled, not wanting to move. "I'll let you sleep on me tonight."

With the last bit of strength he had left, he stood up and carried her up to their bedroom. The woman laughed at his cute behavior. He could be a big baby sometimes.
