16 - Mind Game

"[A/n]! There you are!" exclaimed Killjoy as she spotted her friend in the cafeteria. "I looked for you everywhere this morning."

She turned to the German engineer and chuckled awkwardly. "Sorry, I had a hard time waking up early this morning."

She raised an eyebrow. "Did you sleep well or did you just stay up late with Chamber?" she asked, bluntly.

[A/n] flushed, extending a hand to cover her friend's mouth. "What are you saying out loud?!" she whisper-yelled.

Killjoy pushed her hand away, revealing her shocked face. "So it's true?!"

She frowned, slapping her friend's shoulder. "Shut your mouth!" Her face turned red from embarrassment as she did not stop talking about it.

"So you two are finally a thing?!" she kept on going, both excited and surprised. "Isn't that guy an asshole?"

She nodded. "He sure is," she agreed, not caring about calling her boyfriend names. "But, you know, things happen."

Killjoy held both her shoulders with a determined look. "Are you sure he's not just doing it for his own sake?"

The camouflage agent pondered for a moment. After their sincere conversation this morning, she believed in him and his sincerity about his intention and their relationship. There was no way the way he stared at her lovingly was a lie. "Trust me, it's all good." She gave a reassuring smile. Her friend seemed to relax a bit. "Though, he'll still be a little asshole for trying to manipulate me."

Killjoy's eyes widened as [A/n] finished talking. The latter frowned as she could not understand her friend's reaction. It was not the first time they insulted the French man behind his back so why would she act all surprised? "Who is a little asshole?"

[F/n] jumped at the sound of a familiar voice behind her. Sweats ran down her forehead as she quickly glanced over her shoulder without turning around to confirm that he was there behind her. She saw part of his arms, crossed against his strong chest. She closed her eyes, trying to compose herself, knowing the pissed expression he must be wearing at the moment. Putting on her sweetest smile, she turned her heels and waved at him.

"Ah, Chamber! The man I was looking for! We need to work, right? Let's go!" she blabbered, trying to distract his mind so he would forget. She put her hands around one of his crossed arms and led him out.

He leaned down to her ear, his smile falling for a moment. "Don't think I forgot."

She looked away, shutting her mouth tight, nervously. She was a dead woman. "Ah, wait, [A/n]!" Killjoy called for her. A savior! "The new agent is here today, you should go see her."

"Oh, yes! I never got the chance to meet her. Neon, was it?"

Killjoy nodded with a smile. "She should be around the HQ somewhere. Chamber knows her so he can help you."

[F/n] looked up at her partner who looked slightly nervous. "I didn't know you knew Neon! You should have told me, I would have loved to meet her before!"

"Well," Vincent started, adjusting his tie, before they both headed out of the cafeteria, waving back at Killjoy, "we do not have the best kind of relationship."

"What do you mean?"

"She hates me."

The female agent laughed, leaning her head against his broad shoulder. "Don't everyone hate you?"

He rolled his eyes but could not argue back. "I tried to make amends but she just tries to zap me every time she sees me."

She laughed again, her hand traveling from his arm to his hand. Chamber looked down at their linked hands and smiled. "She looks like an interesting person!"

"She is," he nodded, bringing her hand up with his to kiss the back of it. She blushed slightly and glanced around to see if anyone saw them. "But you are more interesting," he added, his voice deeper than usual as he whispered against her hand.

"Ch-Chamber!" she whisper-yelled, trying to escape from his grasp. She knew this look and voices and it meant no good. "Not here!"

"Why not?" he asked, bringing a hand to her cheek, brushing it with the back of his fingers. "It's not like we have not made love here."

"We're in a fucking corridor!"

He pushed her back against the wall behind her, towering her with his arms on each side of her face. Her cheeks burned from embarrassment. The woman tried to look away from him but his eyes were mesmerizing, making it difficult to stare somewhere else. Slowly, he leaned closer to her, bringing a hand to her cheek. She closed her eyes tight and waited nervously for his lips.

"Arrrg!" Chamber suddenly cried out in pain. Quickly, [A/n] opened her eyes and saw her lover on the ground holding his stomach in pain. She stared down at him, lost for words. What the hell just happened?

"Oi!" a voice burst out next to her. She jumped and turned around to face this unknown voice that had just shouted at her. Before her, stood a short and strong-looking woman. She wore a very athletic-looking attire that featured black and blue leggings with a pair of black sneakers. She also had a dark-blue cropped vest and her forearms were also covered with long black and blue gloves. Her arms along with her face were covered with light blue and gray patterns. Her colorful blue hair was tied up in a pigtails hairstyle. "Don't let that guy bother you like that! You've got to fight back!" She tried to open her mouth but no words would come out. She seemed to have so much energy and she was very strong-looking - not only physically. "I never saw you here before, are you an agent?"

Chamber stood on his knees, still holding his side in pain, and looked up to the woman who just arrived. "Neon, she's my-"

"I didn't ask you!" she yelled before kicking him across his face. He fell backward, blood pouring out of his nose.

"Ah! Chamber!" [A/n] hurried to his side, kneeling next to him. His glasses were broken and it did not seem like any broken pieces had cut him. She sighed in relief, gently stroking his unhurt cheek to soothe him. He grunted, not wanting to stand up anymore.

Neon crossed her arms and looked down at the two of them. "Are you two close?"

[A/n] pondered for a moment, trying to choose her words carefully. "He's my work partner and he helps me make guns and all."

"Does he help you for free?!" She nodded and Neon scoffed. "He's gonna scam you. You should be careful."

[F/n] stood up with a chuckle and smiled at the loud woman, leaving the French man to suffer on the cold ground for a minute. "I am [A/n]. I'm also an agent and I'm the one working at the arsenal. If you need anything for your guns, it's me you have to ask. It'll save you any unnecessary fight with the guy down there."

Neon laughed and energetically pat her shoulder. "You look more pleasant to hang with than Monsieur Baguette down there."

Chamber grunted again at their comments, swearing he will get back to them for that. It was [A/n]'s turn to laugh. "You're Neon, aren't you?" She nodded with a grin. "I'm happy to finally see you. Don't hesitate to come by my workshop any time, I'm here about 24/7."

"I will, thanks!" the Filipino agent said before walking away, waving at her. "See ya, [A/n]!"

"See ya!" the camouflage agent waved back at her, cheerfully. Then, once she was out of sight, she turned her attention back on her lover laying on the ground in pain. "We should get you to the infirmary, should we?"

"Please," he begged in pain, extending an arm for her to help him stand up.

She chuckled and took a hold of his arm, pushing him back up. He rested his arm around her shoulders and leaned on her. "Come on, it's not like you can't walk," she said, playfully rolling her eyes.

"You left me on the ground to talk peacefully to my aggressor. Now, deal with it."

"You're so childish sometimes."

They reached the infirmary but, unfortunately, it was empty. Chamber sat down on the bed, holding his nose. The blood had stained his hand and clothes and he kept complaining about it on their way to the nurse's office, which annoyed the woman by his side. [A/n] looked around the room for a clean piece of clothes and then she wiped the blood off his face. Then, she placed some ice on his swelled cheek and took his hand to hold the ice in place. He gritted his teeth at the cold sensation.

"Don't be a baby," she told him, placing a kiss on his forehead. While she took off his broken glasses, he put his arms around her waist and rested his face on her shoulder.

"[F/n]," he mumbled against her neck. She hummed, stroking his back gently. "I can't see anything."

She laughed then kissed his head. "Is your eyesight that bad?" she questioned and he nodded. "Do you have any other pair here?"

"In my room."

She stepped back, Chamber whined as his comfortable pillow left, and she chuckled at his cute behavior. "I'll be right back. Don't get into any other fight."

He sighed and laid down on the bed. He could not do much without his glasses so he had to leave it to her while he rested after being violently kicked across his beautiful face. He was mad at the moment so he needed some time alone to chill.

In the meantime, [A/n] reached his room. It was actually the first time she went here. Just as one would imagine it's it was very neat and organized, not an object out of place. It was surprisingly plain though, compared to his home in France or his penthouse. He did not spend a lot of time in this place anyway so he had no real use for it, which must be the reason why he did not care about decorating it. The woman started to look everywhere for his glasses, having no idea where to look.

"Fucking hell, I should have asked him first."

Suddenly, she felt a presence approaching her. "Looking for something?" a male voice said from outside the room.

[A/n] perked up and saw a man in a white coat standing by the door. "Cypher? Do you need something?"

Aamir made himself feel right at home, entering Chamber's room and sitting in his bed. He looked around, fidgeting something in his hand. "How is it going with Chamber?"

She quirked an eyebrow, unsure of where he was aiming for. "What do you mean?"

His eyes met hers and they stared at each other in silence for a moment. [A/n] knew him well enough to know that it would be a bad idea to reveal her close relationship with Chamber - even though she was pretty sure he was already aware. They refused to let the other go so they kept on staring at one another. They had no trust towards the other, and for good reasons.

Finally, Cypher spoke again. "Do you mind delivering a message to your 'partner'?"

She glared at him, suspicious of what kind of messages he wanted her to tell him. "Make this quick."

After a good thirty minutes, [A/n] came back to the infirmary, a pair of new glasses in her hand. Chamber had not moved: he still held the ice on his less swelled than before cheek, and his nose seemed to have stopped bleeding. Upon hearing her enter, Chamber glanced at her with a frown.

"Took you long enough," his remark was complimented with his annoyed tone. He hated being so vulnerable, especially around here.

[F/n] rolled her eyes and walked closer to hand him his glasses. He put them on and sighed in relief as his blurry vision became clear again. "Sorry, I've met some people along the way."

He quirked an eyebrow, curious to know her encounters. "Who did you see?"

She paused, looking worried for a moment. Chamber waited patiently for her to talk, her worry being contagious. She took a hold of his hand and gently stroked the back of it with her thumbs. "Cypher asked me to deliver you a message." A frown appeared on his face at the mention of the Moroccan agent. "He said that he's waiting for you. And he added that you hadn't saved the queen yet." Chamber understood immediately what he meant and it angered him. How did he dare threatened not only him but her? [A/n] was visibly confused as she did not quite catch the meaning behind the message. "What does he mean?"

He hesitated between telling her or coming up with some kind of lie. He did not want her to worry unnecessarily, especially when she could not do anything against Cypher who was her savior in many ways. "Do not worry, mon amour. I'm taking care of that," he said to reassure her, placing a kiss on top of her head.

"Be careful," she warned him, her worried eyes staring into his.

He smiled warmly at her, playing with a few strands of her hair. "I will."

Chamber arrived at the said place. It was quiet and empty. The only noticeable object was the chess game that sat in the room, lit up by a light above it. He glanced around the room, looking for any sign of his opponent. Behind him, a figure appeared from the shadow of the room and made its way to the French man's side.

"I'm glad you got the message," the voice said.

Chamber glanced over his shoulder to the man with a white coat. "Cypher, it's always a pleasure to see you," he said, sarcastically, making the other agent laugh.

"We'll see about that."

Cypher walked towards the chess game, sitting down, then gesturing the other seat for Chamber to join. And he did, his gaze never leaving Cypher's hidden eyes. "Did you need me for something, my friend?"

"Very much. I needed a partner to play and you are the perfect opponent," he answered with a chuckle. Chamber could hear his smirk behind his mask, which annoyed him, but he kept his smug face of his up. Showing weakness in front of Cypher would be the biggest mistake he could ever make.

"I am your man," Chamber agreed to his little game, curious to see where he wanted to go with that game of his.

They played in silence, moving pawns left and right carefully. It was not just a game of chess, it was a game of the mind. The first one to break would lose. And they were both very good at this type of game. Hours it would take, but winning must be achieved for either side. The king had to stay up or it was game over.

Cypher eventually broke the heavy silence that floated in the room. "How is it going with your 'queen'?" he asked, glancing up from the game to him.

Chamber kept a calm face and continued to ponder on his next move. "Great. Don't you know? I thought you had eyes everywhere," he poked at him with a smirk, moving his tower, taking one of Cypher's pawns.

The other man chuckled, glancing back down at the ongoing game. "I see you're both having fun together. Or is it just you?"

Chamber scoffed, watching Cypher taking his tower. "I wonder." He did not plan to let himself be manipulated by a man like him. "I hope you're enjoying the show," he added with a smirk.

Cypher rolled his eyes, unfazed by Chamber's inappropriate comment. "[A/n] has many friends, you should be careful to not exploit her too much."

"Exploit is such a bad word, really. We're just having fun together as adults."

Cypher scoffed, not believing his words. "What is your aim? Why did you join the protocol?" he finally stopped playing around, asking bluntly the questions that had been burning inside his throat.

"For a man who claims to know everything, you sure ask a lot of questions." Chamber was not dropping his act, confident that he was going to win.

"Don't think you're untouchable, Chamber. I will take you out," he claimed before moving his queen, taking out his fool. "I know your weakness."

Chamber stared at the queen then scoffed. His glaring eyes and smiling face were fixed on his unreadable expression. "I would love to see you try, Cypher."

Cypher stayed silent for a moment, forgetting about the chess game. "Winning requires sacrifices, Chamber. Never forget that."

The French man became more serious then, his smile dropping. "I am aware of that." Better than anyone.
