Chapter 3

Roman gulped slightly as he entered the Dark Sides Common Room. It was just how he remembered it. Dark and morbid with black, spiked furniture. There was a semi-circle of thrones in the middle of the room and Roman gulped again when he saw that his and Virgil's thrones were still there. They were all black ugly things with twisted arm-rests and they were made out of thick, uncomfortable wood. The only way they could be distinguished was by the emblems. Roman's was still there, faded and chipped. A golden crown with twisted, vile vines and thorns twisting around it.

"Who's the new guy, Jan?" A voice asked from the shadows. Janus laughed under his breath.

"Oh, he's not new, Guilt." He said, smirking at Roman. "Why don't you introduce yourself Roman?"

"Er," Roman looked from Janus to the seemingly empty room. "I'm Roman and," he took a breath, "I'm Creativity and I don't want to be here!"

He received a sharp blow to the back of his head. "Don't lie to us, Roman." Janus hissed, slipping his glove back on. He then turned to the rest of the room. "Pride's finally re-joined us, everyone."

"Pride?" A slightly younger voice asked. Janus nodded and a little boy came into the light. "I thought he was just a myth."

Janus shook his head. "No. He is very real, Insecurities."

Insecurities looked at Roman with his head cocked to the side. "How's my brother?" He asked, his voice barely above a whisper. "Is Anxiety alright?"

"Anxiety? Oh, Virgil's doing fine, I think." Roman said, his brow furrowing. Insecurities shrank back into the darkness.

"He told you his name?" He asked, his voice barely a whisper again. "He never told me his name and I'm his brother. Why did he tell you and not me? Was I not good enough as a brother?"

"No, you were a perfect brother, Insecurities." Another voice reassured. Janus clapped his hands to get the attention of the room.

"Does anyone know where Remus is? I wouldn't want him to miss his brother."

"I saw him messing about in the Dark Imagination." The voice that had reassured Insecurities said. Janus smiled slightly.

"Thanks Jealousy. Could you get him for us?"

Roman assumed that Jealousy nodded because he heard footsteps retreating down a corridor.

"Now Pride," Janus said as Roman flinched at his harsh tone, "why don't you sit down?" Roman opened his mouth to protest or say something at least but the glint in Janus' eye shut him up. He sighed and sat down in his throne, slumping down as far as was comfortable. Janus sat himself in the throne with the yellow, two-headed snake emblem.

"Da da da dat da dat da da da da ya da. Da da dat dat da ya da!" They all heard a loud voice coming down the corridor. Roman refrained rolling his eyes. Of course. Thomas had watched Hamilton on Disney + so of course his brother was singing the most annoying trill in the whole musical.

"Boo!" Remus screeched, possibly making Roman's ears bleed. "Heya Roman!"

Roman opened his mouth to say something but was cut off by Janus. "Sit down everyone. That includes you, Remus. Pride hasn't been here since 2016 and he'll need to meet everyone because he's not going away again." It sounded innocent enough but Roman still felt threatened by it. One by one, different darkly dressed Sides came into the light and sat in their respective thrones.

"Insecurities, why don't you start?"

The young boy opened his mouth before his eyes went wide and shook his head. "You don't want to go first?" Janus asked in a much softer, more caring tone. Insecurities shook his head violently. "Okay, that's alright. I'll start."

"I already know who you are, Snake." Roman hissed. He received a small hiss from Insecurities and a growl from Remus. Janus scowled but didn't say anything.

"My name is Janus. I represent Lies." He said, glaring daggers at Roman.

"Guilt. I represent Guilt and you aren't going to learn my name for a long time." A boy on Janus' left said.

"Jealousy."

"Anger."

"Obsession."

"I'm your brother!" Remus sang. Roman glared at him before realising everyone was looking at him expectantly.

"I don't want to be here." Roman said. "So I don't have to do anything that I don't want to."

"Oh give it up, Princey." Insecurities hissed. "You don't have the power that you had with the Light Sides. We're all equals here. Not that you would know what being an equal is." He muttered. Roman blinked at the small boy for a few seconds before turning his attention to the only girl in the room.

"Why are you here?" He asked her. She scoffed slightly.

"Why am I here?" She repeated. "I represent Anger. I can't imagine they'd accept me that easily over with the Light Sides."

"But why are you a girl? Thomas is a guy so why does he have a girl Side?"

"I don't know. Because he imagines me as a girl?" Anger snapped. "Everyone has a feminine side, Pride." She muttered, crossing her arms in a huff.

"Now, calm down, Anger. Pride was only asking a question." Janus said fairly.

"I am calm!" Anger snapped. "This is bullshit." She muttered before getting up and sinking out.

"Congratulations, Pride." Jealousy snapped. "You've pissed off Anger."

"Well it's not exactly my fault, is it?" Roman snapped. "She represents anger, doesn't she?"

"Let's not fight!" Janus said, raising his voice to command the attention of the arguing Sides. "Jealousy, why don't you take a walk. Remus, show Roman his room."

Jealousy rolled his eyes but got up and sank out. Remus bounded up and grabbed Roman's wrist, pulling him down a dark corridor.

"Come on! Come on! I asked Jan to keep your room next to mine in case you came back!" Remus babbled, pulling him along a corridor. He stopped outside a silvery door with an upside-down crown for a doorknob. "Here you go. Now, I'm going to go and find some more food." Remus said, grinning manically and sinking down. Roman took a deep breath and gripped the doorknob, opening the door.

It was just how he remembered it. Words upon words scribbled on the walls in silver pen, black furniture and a single stuffed toy sitting on the bed looking a little bedraggled and sad. Roman smiled slightly, tears springing to his eyes at the sight of the only thing that tied him to his childhood. Carefully, he picked up the teddy bear and a fashioned a small crown out of thin air. Placing the small crown on the bear, he hugged it to his chest.

"I missed you, King George." He whispered to the stuffed toy before wiping his eyes and grabbing his sword, pulling it out of the holster. He stared at it as if trying to figure out what to do next. He sighed, conflicted. "I don't want to be here." He muttered. "I don't!"
