Chapter 11 | leaks
The problem with being the child of two famous people was you were always in the spotlight. Even though Gabriel was in jail and Emilie had been out of the spotlight for a while, Adrien's face was still out there on magazine covers, billboards and posters. The company had only been defunct as long as Gabriel had been in prison, so there were still a few advertisements around that hasn't been taken down yet.
Adrien was still very much famous. And he was dating the son of Jaggred stone, who was also famous. They'd managed to say out of the spotlight for a while, as most of the media were actually rather understanding about giving the family privacy after such a harsh trail and all the abuse. But today, today that privacy was gone. Adrien had been thrust back into the spotlight again.
He woke up to his phone going wild, notification after notification. All his friends were texting him, and most notably Luka was texting him. He opened the message and found a link attached to it.
Babyblue: shit [link attached]
Babyblue: are you ok?
Clicking on the link, Adrien was bought it a celebrity news site and the headline immediately pissed him off.
ADRIEN AGRESTE SPOTTED OUT WITH SON OF JAGGED STONE. NEW HAIR AND STYLE.
Could they not just hang out together? What did the media need to stick their nose in it for?
The picture underneath was a photo taken from a distance, of the two of them out eating ice cram together, caught mid kiss. He rolled his eyes, who was out taking pictures of them? Paparazzi? Some stalker fan?
He then went into the article itself, and the pissed off emotions immediately went to fear.
After the trial of father Gabriel Agreste, Adrien Agreste (now Adrien Ghram De Vanilly) confirmed a long term relationship with son of Jagged Stone, Luka Couffine.
The couple have stayed out of the spotlight after the trial, but recently have been found out and about on dates in Paris. Notably the former model has completely changed his style away from the Agreste brand. He'd been spotted with longer, dyed hair, androgynous clothing and seemingly makeup.
Could the starlet be experimenting with gender now they've come out as in a relationship with a man? Has Couffine influenced him?
Adrien didn't know why he felt that dread. Being gender non conforming was perfectly fine, so why was he scared? He didn't think he'd been wearing androgynous clothes, that was just the style he'd gravitated toward after ditching the model look. And his hair? He just liked having longer hair, what was so odd about that? As for makeup, as if he didn't wear it before as a model. He didn't tend to wear it day to day, some lipgloss sure but not a full face.
So why did this scare him?
Oh... wait.
Suddenly it got him like a train, that odd feeling that something was off. His obsession with his new hair... all the times he'd looked in the mirror and felt something wasn't quite right...
He wasn't cis.
He didn't know what he was, but he wasn't cis. And the media were already speculating on it before he'd even processed it himself or had the chance to come out. He dropped his phone, turned to look at the mirror in his room and stood before it. He looked at his reflection, his longer hair messy from sleeping, his pyjama shirt oversized and covering his shorts like a dress.
That's what looked wrong... he was still a boy. He was still seen as a boy.
He felt his hands shaking, he didn't know what to do. He hadn't even processed his own identity and the media were ALREADY speculating on him? The internet was going to go wild, and if things went too far he'd be forced to come out before he even knew what he was.
In a daze, he walked downstairs and into the kitchen were his mums were looking through the cupboards for something to make for breakfast.
"Good morning hon-" Emilie began, stopping when she saw he was stressed about something.
Adrien wordlessly jumped on her and hugged her tight, trying not to cry.
"Baby what's wrong?" She asked, hugging him back.
"I- I don't even know what I am and there's already tabloid articles about it..." he said, voice quivering.
She hadn't been online yet, she didn't know what this was about. Looking over at Nathalie, she picked up her phone to look up what was going on. Nathalie was surprised to see Adrien's name trending on Twitter, thousands of people talking about the article. Some where exited and jumping on the assumption Adrien was some form of trans, some despised it and were clearly phobic. And alarmingly few were standing up for him and telling everyone to stop speculating and let him come out when he's ready.
"What... who even took this picture? It doesn't look like a paparazzi shot" Nathalie muttered, showing Emilie the article.
She read it over quickly, scoffing at it.
"They always do this. Anyone breaks a gender norm and all of a sudden there's this big uproar... Adrien honey you don't need to listen to-" Emilie began.
"No that's the thing! They're right! But... I don't know what I am, I'm not a boy. I know I'm not, but I don't know WHAT I am! And already I'm being put on blast. And did you see the end? They're insinuating Luka has 'influenced me', blaming him for something he didn't do. Something that isn't even bad!" Adrien rambled frantically, eyes starting to well up.
Nathalie and Emilie looked over at each other. In truth they had started to wonder if Adrien was questioning his gender recently, but they didn't want to push him so they stayed quiet about it. This is exactly why they didn't want to push him, because he'd freak out and be all scared and stressed over not knowing what he was yet.
You should NEVER push a young queer into a label or out of the closet, NEVER speculate on them or tell them they need to choose. It's a personal thing, they need to come to their own conclusions and they'll come out when they're ready.
And here Adrien was, having his gender speculated on by the whole internet when he wasn't even sure what it was himself.
Or if 'himself' was even the right term.
The mothers pulled him into a group hug, letting him cry at the stress of the situation into their arms.
"Honey listen, first of all it doesn't matter what you are. We'll always love you and always be there for you. And hey, I picked the name Adrien because it's gender neutral so if this ever did happen you wouldn't feel any dysphoria around your name. I knew going into motherhood that it was always a possibility you'd end up something that isn't a boy, I was always ready to accept that and help you when you needed it" Emilie explained.
"Don't take the words of tabloids and gossip bloggers online to heart. In fact it's best someone with your level of fame doesn't spend much time online anyway. Take your time honey, we'll always be here for you. You have us, you have Luka, you have your friends, we'll all accept you no matter what" Nathalie continued.
A short while after sending the text Luka had a bad feeling, he checked for a reply only seeing it had been read and not replied to which only confirmed his fear. He knew his beloved sunshine, he knew that something like this right after the mess with his father would only hurt him. So Luka was quick to grab his bike and ride down to Adrien himself to check up on him.
When they heard a knock at the door, Nathalie left the hug to go answer it, not surprised at all to see Luka.
"Is Adrien ok?" He said.
"You have a sixth sense for his emotions, I swear. He's... not that great" Nathalie replied.
Luka immediately rushed in, seeing Adrien teary eyed and huddled up to his mum.
"Adrien" he said.
Hearing Lukas voice, Adrien immediately perked up and reached out for him, pulling him close. His mother went over to Nathalie, to remark how Luka seemed to have Adrien ESP or something.
"How does he always know?" Emilie muttered.
"No idea. He has a built in Adrien sensor or something" Nathalie replied.
Luka held him tight, angry at whoever took the picture and sent it into the tabloids for setting this whole thing off.
"Sunshine I-"
Before Luka could even begin, Adrien cut him off frantic and upset.
"Do you still love me?" He asked.
"Wha- of course I do! Why wouldn't I?"
"Because I'm not a boy... I don't know what I am"
"Adrien, I'm bi remember? You could be literally anything and I'd still love you. It doesn't matter if you're a boy, a girl, non binary, anything! I love you because you're you, you're Adrien. No matter what" Luka assured.
That put Adrien at ease a bit, knowing he had Luka and his mums to help him though it.
"Sweetheart" Emilie spoke up.
Adrien looked up at her.
"Should we try and get the article taken down?"
"That'll only make people speculate more. If they see the article go down they'll think I have something to hide" Adrien replied.
He had a point, it was a loose-loose situation.
Nathalie put her hand on Emilies shoulder, getting her attention.
"Leave this to me. I've had to do a lot of damage control when I worked for Gabriel, I'll get the gossip to stop without making it worse. I have my ways" She said.
Adrien smiled at Nathalie, a little more relief overcoming him. He was so glad to have Nathalie as a mother.
"Thanks mum" he said.
Even if Nathalie could handle some of the media frenzy, Luka still felt this whole situation was odd. Who took that picture and sent it in? The fact they actively waited until they kissed to take the picture, the fact they waited for a day Adrien looked more androgynous, the fact they sent it in to a tabloid with the implications present. And the quality of the photo too, it couldn't have been paparazzi.
Someone who knew them must have taken it, and Lukas bad gut feeling about a certain girl came back to him.
"Adrien I don't want to alarm you but..." Luka began.
Adrien looked up at him, wiping away his tears.
"I have a feeling Lila was involved in this"
