The Girl on the Cliff
"What do you want?" I asked.
"What do I want?" the little girl laughed harshly. "What do I want? Now when has that ever been a factor in any decisions you've made?"
I froze. "Never," I mumbled. I don't know why, but I do know that I've never cared for this girl's well being.
"Exactly," she said, and I instantly felt guilty.
I walked closer the the edge. I could smell the salty seawater, but when I looked down, it was unlike any sea I'd ever seen. It was black, and seemed to ooze rather than flow.
"You cry in your sleep," the little girl said out of nowhere.
"No I don't!" I exclaimed, glaring at her. The tuft of grass that she clung to loosened a bit, and the girl yelped in fear. She struggled to grab another tuft.
"Yes you do. It's not intentional, but you do," she said, kicking her legs a bit.
"Well, if it's not on purpose, and I'm sleeping, it doesn't count!" I said defiantly.
"I would have guessed you would say that." She was silent after that, until she looked down. "You know, it was a lot less polluted the last time you came," she commented.
"What do you mean? I've never been here before, and if I had, I'd remember," I said uncertainly. "And besides," I added, "I would have helped you up."
The girl looked at me curiously. "No, you're the one who pushed me off in the first place."
"No way!" I yelled. "I wouldn't want you to be hanging on the edge of a cliff."
"You can pull me up, but it's going to take a lot more than just five or six friends," she said, her ice blue eyes bright with something I couldn't recognize. "You'll need to completely destroy that horrible barrier that you keep around. It's the only way."
"What do I do? How do I do that?" I asked frantically, but she just shook her head.
"Figure it out Yuki. You put me here, and I know you can pull me up again," she said, her voice growing faint, before she was swallowed up by a bright light. "I believe in you, Yuki," was the last thing I heard before everything disappeared.
I opened my eyes, and sat up. The little girl, the cliff, it had all been a dream, but it felt so real.
Zahra was already awake, and shaking Hannah to wake her up. Nayeli was also sleeping, but Izzi and Allora were up and already dressed in their uniforms. Why were they in their school uniforms?
"What time izzit?" Hannah asked sleepily.
"It's Monday, and it's 6:30, so you need to wake up," Zahra said. The sentence felt like it should mean something to me, before it finally clicked in my head. Monday. 6:30.
"Ack, school starts at 7:20, we're gonna be late!" I screeched, jumping out of bed.
Haruna walked in, and looked surprised that I was already up. "Oh. I was coming to wake you up, but it looks like your friends did that for me," she said, smiling at Zahra. "Honestly, I have to fight a battle with her every morning, but you managed to do it without any trouble at all. What's your secret?" She asked, suddenly appearing right next to Zahra. She also happened to be standing on Hannah's back.
"Ow," Hannah managed to get out. "Please get off."
Haruna stepped off of her quickly and helped Hannah to her feet.
"Alright, I'll leave you girls to get dressed, and go get food on the table," Haruna said, and shut the door.
Hannah yawned, stretched, and grabbed her uniform from the bag that she suddenly had with her. "This uniform is legitimately the most disgusting article of clothing that I own," she said, making a face.
Zahra was still in her pajamas, and was shaking Nayeli awake. Unlike Hannah, Nayeli sat up and was awake, though still tired.
After we were all dressed, we went downstairs to the dining room, where there were assorted muffins on the table. Hannah immediately grabbed the chocolate chip one, which I had hoped to have from myself, but whatever, blueberries are good too. After that, we walked to school.
While the Book Readers talked amongst themselves, I pondered what the little girl had said. She'd said that I'd need to completely break down my barrier. Perhaps the key wasn't to break it down, but instead to lower it.
If that was what the strategy I was going to pursue, then I could only think of one group. A group so terrible that if I could lower my guard for even one of them, I could lower it for anyone.
The Host Club.
Hi. I'm not dead. Anyways, I'm really sorry for not updating in... um... *checks last update* ALMOST TWO YEARS?! But anyways, I way scrolling through my list of works, got to this one, and received a notification that someone had added this to their reading list, so I felt really, really guilty. So I typed this chapter up, and hopefully you guys enjoyed it. It was fun to come back to this story, and I'll (hopefully) update more often than every two years. Anyways, what do you think of the chapter? Let me know in the comments, and be awesome!
