9. Drawing Attention

After the assembly that they had, it was obvious to Jungkook that things were different. Instead of paying attention during the lectures, the girls were too busy gossiping about what happened to the two missing girls. He could hear snatches of conversations buzz around his head as annoying as a mosquito. The teachers kept trying to get their attention, but it was obvious that it was failing. Jungkook couldn't say that he could focus either. It especially didn't help that he kept seeming to see the detective everywhere he went. This hot shot young detective kept wandering about, more than likely trying to get a feel for things and see if anything was out of the ordinary. Every time that Jungkook saw the detective, he kept feeling as if the man was staring directly at him as if able to see through his facade.

During lunch, the young gun detective was also there. He kept alternating between chatting with the kitchen staff and watching the girls all eating their lunch. Jungkook took an early leave with half a sandwich still in his hand because he felt like he was still being dissected by the man with his eyes. Besides, he hadn't heard from Taehyung in a while and was half wondering if he would still pick him up tonight or not with everything going on.

Noticing that Willa was also absent in the lunchroom and figuring she was in their dorm room, Jungkook made his way towards a janitor's closet, slipping inside and shutting the door before digging out his phone. He munched away in an unladylike fashion on the remainder of his sandwich while he sat on a box of toilet paper, waiting for Taehyung to pick up.

"Well, there you are," said Jungkook before narrowing his eyes at Taehyung's video feed. "Where are you?"

"I should be asking you where you are," responded Taehyung.

"Oh my word. You're in my apartment, aren't you?"

"What?!...No..." spluttered Taehyung who started to spin the camera view so that he was facing something more common than one of Jungkook's movie posters.

"How did you even get in my apartment?"

"Spare key."

"You mean the one I left with Hobi for emergencies only?" asked Jungkook, squishing the reminder of his sandwich in his hand. "He's a dead man just like you."

"You're making me want to reconsider picking you up tonight," said Taehyung. "Now answer my question. Where are you?"

"In a closet at the moment."

"Why?"

"I just...I wanted to see if you were still picking me up tonight, jerk."

"Why wouldn't I still be picking you up tonight? Did something happen?"

"You haven't heard?" asked Jungkook. "I figured that it would be big news by now."

"Oh...was there some kind of cat fight that had to be broken up by the police or something?" asked Taehyung; his eyes lighting up.

"No. Two girls from the school went missing last night."

"Pfft. I'm sure they're fine. They probably just ran off with some boys."

"Yeah. That's what I'm thinking too," said Jungkook, "But they hired this detective anyway to try to track the girls down. He keeps staring at me."

"That's just your paranoia talking. Look, just dodge the old geezer until I come pick you up."

"Do you think they will let me leave with everything going on?"

"Well, they can't hold you against your will," said Taehyung. "Just calm down Jungkook. Also, stop eating your lunch in the closet like a weirdo. You're more than likely gonna draw more attention to yourself that way."

He knew that Taehyung was right, looking at the man as he flopped backwards on a lounge that he had just purchased for his new place.

"Fine. I'm hanging up for now. You better be out of my apartment before we talk again."

"But..."

"No buts. I want you out, hear me?"

"Yeah. Yeah. You're no fun."

Jungkook rolled his eyes as he hung up on the call, slipping his phone away again. Moving towards the closet door he opened it up and nearly jumped out of his skin when he saw the detective standing on the other side of the door; a stone-faced expression painted on his face.

Now that he was face-to-face with the detective, Jungkook found himself studying him fully for the first time. They were about the same height. The man's hair was a combination of gray and brown; as if the man was debating whether or not to appear his own age or not. After all, the man couldn't be more than a few years older than Jungkook. A shiny name tag pinned to his gray suit jacket displayed his name as 'Detective Kim Namjoon'.

"What were you doing in there?" Namjoon asked.

"Um...taking a call," said Jungkook as quickly as he could. "The closet has really good reception."

"Uh huh..." hummed Namjoon as he took a small notebook from his breast pocket, flipping it open to a clean page before asking, "I'm trying to get acquainted with as many of the students at this school as I can. What's your name?"

"Aera," he said in his falsetto voice again.

"Last name."

"Jeon," he said as his eyes stayed riveted to the pen as Namjoon took the name down.

"Where were you yesterday evening?"

Jungkook didn't know whether to lie or not. He wondered if Namjoon had talked to Yoongi already and discovered that he had been in the hallway last night.

"I was here," Jungkook decided upon since it was the truth.

"And by here, you mean where exactly?"

"In my dorm room," said Jungkook.

The man stopped writing in his notebook then, lifting his cold gaze to look at him.

"You're giving very succinct answers. Did you witness something odd last night?"

Jungkook felt panic flood his system again when he heard someone calling his name. Both of them turned their heads at the same time to see Willa coming in his direction.

"Aera, there you are! We're going to be late for composition class!" said Willa as she slung her arm about Jungkook's shoulders as if they were best friends.

Jungkook found the action odd but was thankful for the save. He turned from Namjoon to give her a smile.

"That's right! Thank you for making sure I didn't miss class."

"Of course! We girls have to stick together, especially after such an awful event."

Namjoon didn't say anything as he watched the two of them. Willa kept her arm about his shoulders as she began to direct him past Namjoon.

"Come on, Aera!"

"Excuse us," said Jungkook as he inclined his head, before keeping it down completely as he walked off with Willa.

When they were around the corner and Willa turned to make sure they hadn't been followed, she dropped her arm from about his shoulders.

"Why are you always getting into trouble?" she asked with a disapproving glare.

Not liking the constant looks he was getting, Jungkook crossed his arms across his chest. As he did, he could feel the washcloths that he had in the bra flatten slightly. He would have to keep his arms crossed until he fixed it.

"It's not like you have to save me," he said. "I was fine."

"Uh huh. Like I believe that," said Willa as she sighed and moved past him to walk towards composition class.

Jungkook stayed where he was, staring after her as she disappeared into the classroom. Even being currently disguised as a girl, Jungkook still couldn't understand them at all.
