8. Missing
Jungkook felt like he had just passed out when he heard Willa yell, "You're gonna be late for breakfast, idiot!" followed by the slam of their dorm room door. Groaning, he rolled over onto his stomach, grabbing the pillow and boxing it over his head.
'Another day in paradise,' he thought, wishing for just a few more minutes of rest. If he were allowed to, he'd spend all day sleeping.
Jungkook had just finished telling himself that he could have five more minutes of sleep when he heard his phone begin to buzz. Reaching out a hand to pick it up, he groaned once more seeing it was a FaceTime call from Taehyung.
"What do you want?" Jungkook snapped when he accepted the call, rolling onto his side with the pillow still over his head.
Taehyung was standing in the bathroom with a toothbrush dangling from his mouth; a grin on his lips when he saw Jungkook in his disgruntled state.
"Well aren't we bright eyed and bushy tailed this morning?"
"It's too early to deal with you and your crap," said Jungkook. "Why are you calling?"
"You're so hostile and here I was calling to extend an olive branch."
"Really now?" Jungkook moved to get up from the bed, telling himself to get his uniform on so he could go get something to eat before it was too late. "What olive branch is this?"
"Hobi, Jimin and I were talking last night after you so rudely exited the group chat..."
"For starters, why wouldn't I exit the group chat?" interrupted Jungkook. "You three were just talking crap about me!"
"Listen to me for one second, will you? Geezum you have a mouth on you! It's very unladylike."
Jungkook rolled his eyes, yanking the uniform out of the duffel bag on his way to the bathroom to change. He heard the light buzz above him as he shut the door. Placing the phone down on the sink so Taehyung could view the speckled ceiling during the video call, Jungkook began the process of getting dressed.
"And now I'm staring at the ceiling."
"Talk about the olive branch," said Jungkook as he began to strip down to change into the uniform, "Because as soon as I'm done getting dressed, I'm hanging up on you so I can go downstairs and eat breakfast."
"...We decided that - even though this dare you're doing is an ultimate one - a week is too extreme. Last through the rest of the day and I'll come pick you up tonight."
Jungkook froze at those words. He grabbed the phone to look at Taehyung dressed in just a bra; the skirt he'd been working on hiking up over his thighs only half zipped.
"You'll pick me up from here tonight? You're serious?"
"Yes," said Taehyung, "And please finish getting dressed. Seeing you in a bra is unsettling."
Jungkook smirked as he put the phone back down to finish getting dressed. Once he did, he picked up the phone again.
"You better not be pulling my leg."
"I'm not. I promise I'll be there. Just survive for a bit longer."
Jungkook grabbed his discarded clothes and went back out to his duffel. He felt relieved that he would only have to keep up this charade for a bit longer. Soon he could get away from this creepy school and his infuriating roommate. He supposed there wasn't a need to tell the office to try to change his accommodations now. Zipping up the duffel, Jungkook said goodbye to Taehyung before hanging up. He then applied some makeup on quickly in the bathroom to make sure he could keep up his facade before leaving the dorm room.
His stomach growled like a monster as he made his way downstairs; taking two steps at a time to try to get to the cafeteria faster. By the time he made it to the cafeteria though, he was dismayed to see the doors were locked. A few workers could be seen scrubbing down the tables behind the glass. He was too late.
"Young lady, where are you supposed to be?" asked a voice behind Jungkook before he could bemoan his state anymore.
Turning he saw a plump woman in a white and red uniform that looked as if it were about to bust off her form. Her gray hair was slicked back against her head with enough hair spray that the lights above her glowed off it as if it were a helmet. He recognized the frighteningly witchy looking woman from the school's website. This was the headmaster, Mrs. Prunish. Jungkook tried to give a small smile as he curtseyed to her.
'That's what girls do, right?' Jungkook thought as he quickly righted himself with flushed cheeks.
"I was trying to get breakfast..."
"Breakfast ended five minutes ago," she said in a snippy tone, cutting him off. "Next time be on time."
"I'm sorry. It's just that I'm new..."
"That's no excuse, missy. Here we expect our girls to be the best in every way possible. That includes being punctual."
'Does that also include sneaking out after curfew to go meet with boys?' thought Jungkook while he kept a smile plastered on his face.
"I'm sorry. It won't happen again."
"It better not," she snapped. "Now get to class."
Jungkook knew better than to ask her where the class was. He watched her leave before letting out a sigh. Jungkook was just about to move to go pick up an extra schedule at the office when he heard the cafeteria doors open behind him. Turning, he saw Jin standing there. He looked a bit sheepish as he held two slices of toast his way.
"Here. Take this to go," said Jin. "I see you missed breakfast. I know it's not much, but you should have something to eat."
"Thanks," said Jungkook.
Jin nodded with a small smile before slipping back into the cafeteria without another word. Jungkook was amazed at what polar opposites Jin and Willa were. As he continued to marvel about this as he munched on his toast, he went to visit the secretary for an extra schedule. With the schedule in hand, he made his way to his first class, taking a seat. Of course it had to be Math. Jungkook looked about the room as the teacher came in. He didn't bother to pay attention while she taught but made it look like he was. As the lecture droned on and on, he opted to doodle in a notebook the teacher had given him when he first entered the room. He was drawing the tree that the girls had scampered down last night. He had just finished adding leaves to one of the branches when he heard someone 'pst' beside him. Looking sideways, he saw Willa. He hadn't realized that she had been sitting there when he sat down. He cocked a brow at her.
"What is it?" he asked.
"Whatcha drawing?"
"What does it look like?"
"A bunch of sticks with hair."
Jungkook scoffed, rolling his eyes. It didn't look anything like that. He knew she was just doing that to get a rise out of him.
"Aera..."
"What?" snapped Jungkook in a whisper as he looked back over at Willa to see she had slid her own notebook closer so he could look at the page better.
"My tree is better."
Jungkook looked at her tree. It wasn't bad, but he still thought his was better. Before he could say anything, the teacher cleared her throat, gaining both of their attention.
"Ladies, enough of the chit chat! This is not social hour."
"Sorry miss," said Willa as she brought her notebook back closer to her.
The teacher glared at them for a moment more before turning back around. She had just added one more number to the equation on the board when the announcement system came on.
"Attention. All students and staff please report to the auditorium immediately for an emergency assembly."
Chatter filled the room as students stood up from their desks with a scrap of chairs. They all filed out on top of each other; each of them trying to guess what this emergency assembly could be about. Just as Jungkook was about to exit the classroom, he felt something hard hit his shin. He let out an 'ouch', looking to see that it was Willa who had landed a kick to his shin.
"What was that for?" he asked, glaring at her.
"You're in my way," she said with a shrug, chuckling as she slipped past him.
Jungkook stared after her, once again comparing her to Jin. Why couldn't she be sweet like him? He sighed as he walked towards the auditorium. At least this was all almost over. Taehyung would come pick him up that afternoon and he wouldn't have to deal with this anymore.
As Jungkook entered the Seven Angels auditorium, he felt as if he had stepped back in time. The room was cast in a dark yellow light from the lights on the floors of the aisles; making the worn red carpet appear to be a dark maroon in color. The seats were just as dark red as the carpet; the seat cushions folded up until students sat down. There were two white looking pillars near the stage at the front; angelic looking gargoyles standing atop them. They were pointed towards each other with their hands cupped upwards; heads turned even further upwards to look at the darkened domed ceiling above where five painted angels were arranged in a circle.
Jungkook slid into a seat in one of the back rows as Mrs. Prunish took the stage. She was holding a microphone in her hand. Standing near her was a police officer and another man dressed in a gray uniform. He looked too young to be standing on the stage with all the other grave looking adults, but he stood there all the same. His eyes were scanning the talkative girls as they all seated themselves as if analyzing them.
"Ladies, have a seat! This is an important announcement that I need you all to pay attention to," said Mrs. Prunish.
Silence started to fall among all the students that were assembled. Jungkook looked off to his left where he saw all the other faculty members sitting. He recognized Jin sitting among them; sandwiched between two plump people that looked as if they would pop him like a zit if they even moved. Yoongi stood near the shadows by the back door; leaning up against the wall in a lazy way with his arms crossed.
"Now - as many of you may have noticed - we have two young ladies that are currently missing. No one has seen them since last night. You all know that we take disappearances of any sort seriously and have therefore called the police. They have brought with them a detective that will be trying to help us locate them."
At those words, she turned aside to gesture towards the young man in the gray suit that was standing on the stage. He raised a hand meekly in greeting.
"I expect you all to cooperate with his investigation," continued Mrs. Prunish. "We will find these girls wherever they are."
Jungkook wondered if this had anything to do with the girls that he had seen sneak out the window the night before. If it did, he knew that those girls weren't in trouble. If anything, this whole thing was being blown out of proportion. They were no doubt with the boys that they had snuck out to go see.
As they were all dismissed from the auditorium with a warning to cooperate with the investigation, Jungkook looked back towards the stage. He was sure he had to be imagining it, but he couldn't shake the feeling that the detective was looking straight at him.
