'How many ways can you possibly describe leaves?' Jungkook thought as he wandered about outside the school.
After the assembly in the auditorium, his next class was composition class. The teacher was a big nature enthusiast and decided that she would take her class outside to write creatively about nature. Most of the girls had scattered off into their cliques to pretend to write, but gossiped about the assembly instead. Not belonging to any group, Jungkook was left to wander alongside the small forest that was near the school, looking into the darkened depths of it before coming to a standstill in front of a tree that looked like a tuning fork. He opened his journal, sketching a rough drawing of the odd shaped tree when he heard someone stepping on the grass behind him.
"This is composition class, not art class."
Jungkook sighed as he turned to see that it was none other than Willa standing behind him.
"This is the second time I've caught you drawing when you're supposed to be working on something else," continued Willa.
"It's my visualization technique," he said, "I draw things out before I write about them."
"Whatever," she said as she moved to plop down on the grass in an unladylike fashion.
"What are you doing?" Jungkook asked as he turned to look at her.
"Writing," she said without looking up at him.
"But I'm here."
"Is this your tree? Do you own it?"
"Well no."
"Then too bad so sad," she said as she began to write something down in her notebook. "I can write here if I feel like it."
Jungkook sighed as he looked away from her again. He decided that the best thing to do at that moment was to just ignore her. He finished his drawing of the tree and then decided he wanted to be on the other side of it. He wanted to look at it from the point of view of the forest. Making his way carefully into the forest, branches crackled underfoot. It was a jarring sound against the backdrop of whispering leaves surrounding him. It was as if nature was sharing a secret that only they were privy to.
Eventually Jungkook found a place on the other side of the tree where he wanted to try drawing again. As he sketched, he leaned sideways a bit to look at Willa. She still sat on the grass in the same way she'd been when he had left her; her head still bent down to look at her notebook as she wrote something down. As much as Willa irritated him, he tried to tell himself that he only had to put up with her for a little bit longer. Taehyung would come get him soon and save him from this place.
Jungkook turned all his attention back to his notebook to finish his sketch of the tree that he had started. He kept his head mainly focused on the page and was so lost with drawing that he didn't notice Willa as she stood up and came over to him.
"Hey!"
"GEEZUM CROW!"
Willa's laughter echoed out as Jungkook tried to slow the now rapid beating of his heart; Willa's sudden appearance breaking his concentration and giving him a jump scare.
"You scare too easily," complained Willa.
"Why were you trying to jump me in the first place?"
"I wasn't trying to," she said as she looked past him and deeper into the forest where the shadows had their reign on the ground; the sun trying in vain to break through the boughs to shatter it. "Lets go further into the forest."
"We're supposed to stay where the teacher can see us," said Jungkook as he nodded at where the teacher currently stood talking with another one of the girls.
"Scaredy cat," she said. "Just stay then. I will go by myself."
Jungkook watched as Willa turned away from him then to walk into the forest. He knew that he should just let her go, but he found that he couldn't. No matter how much she annoyed him, he couldn't let her just wander off into a forest with a mad man supposedly on the loose.
'Just a few more hours,' he mentally told himself as he closed his notebook and hurried after her.
"So you decided to come," said Willa, not turning around as he caught up with her. It was obvious that she could hear his quick footfalls on the ground.
Jungkook didn't say anything in reply which only caused Willa to laugh.
"Whatever," she said. "It really isn't scary out here. This is the path the other girls take to go see the boys at night."
After another minute or so of walking, Willa slowed and gestured off to her right, causing Jungkook to look in that direction. He could just barely make out the back of another brick building several yards away; a few boys outside playing soccer on the grassy field. Willa walked a little further before coming to a stop in front of a large tree. Jungkook couldn't help but to marvel at how mammoth it was. The roots were large and gnarled, twisted all over each other like a sloppy braid. At the base of the large tree was a hole that looked like a cave. Willa noticed Jungkook staring at it.
"That's where the girls go with the boys when they both sneak out at night. It's the make out spot."
"You know an awful lot about all this," said Jungkook as Willa nodded.
"I used to be one of those girls," she said, "But that was a long time ago."
It seemed like Willa was going to put her walls down for a moment like she had done unknowingly in her sleep, but she quickly moved away from Jungkook before telling him anymore. Jungkook watched as she moved towards the base of the tree to peer inside before she let out a scream.
Jungkook rushed over to stand by her side, looking at her horrified expression before looking into the space to see what had alarmed her.
It didn't take him long to see the hand that was popping up from the dirt floor inside with its fingers frozen in a curl; a white tag dangling off a finger with the number 1 painted on it in blood.
