Chapter 64 - Closure
A few weeks later, Jang Mi had one thing left to do to complete her therapy. Choi Seung-Hyun held Jang Mi into his side as they made their way down the hall. Jang Mi was shaking in her skin, too nervous to think about anything else. Her therapist had claimed if she was able to get through with this, she didn't need therapy anymore. Especially since she already had a strong support group who would be able to help her through hard times. Jang Mi kept inhaling and exhaling as she passed every room.
"It's okay. I'm here." Choi Seung-Hyun said whispering into her ear.
Jang Mi twirled her now grown blond hair in between her firngers. "What if she doesn't recognize me? Or worst, what if I don't recognize her?" Jang Mi asked.
Choi Seung-Hyun shook his head. "Don't worry. Those images in your beautiful brain are all stereotyped. So just breath."
Jang Mi felt him slightly squeeze her body against his in a form of support. She felt better. She always did, when ever she was with Choi Seung-Hyun. She was glad she was doing this with Choi Seung-Hyun instead of her brother, Ji Hoon. She would be over stressed with Ji Hoon's non-existent filtered mouth. It would give her another mental breakdown just by talking about it with her brother. Also another year of therapy.
"Your mother should be in here." The nurse said.
Jang Mi held a breath as she released herself from Choi Seung-Hyun's grip and walked passed the nurse who held the door open. Jang Mi walked into her mom's room to see her sitting blank faced on the sofa. She was staring out the window that overlooked a field that patients were walking around on. It was spring time, so there were a lot of flowers and butterflies flying around the field. Jang Mi released the breath she was holding and looked at the nurse.
"H-how....has she been?" Jang Mi asked as she stumbled over her words.
The nurse sighed. "Well, she's on quite a few medications. Mostly to help calm her body and mind down. When they brought her in a year ago, she was a tough patient to deal with. She fought and hit a lot of the nurses. We had to sedate her most of the time. It was like that for a couple of months. She's been forced to see a therapist to help her. It appeared she developed symptoms similar to schizophrenia, which was the reason she was the way she was. She was sick for a while and it's a surprise that nobody had brought her in to get checked." The nurse explained.
Jang Mi nodded, understanding a few things. "You said developed? How?" Jang Mi asked.
"It's hard to say. The doctors said she wasn't born with it. Most cases similar to the one that your mom has are mostly developed from mental and emotional abuse over a long period of time. You'll be surprised by how common this is amongst the women in Korea." The nurse replied. "It's sad."
Jang Mi looked at her mom and then back to the nurse. "So what's the common factor in these cases? Cases like my moms'? What's the reason why most women become like this?"
The nurse looked around before leaning in a little to whisper towards Jang Mi. "Majority of the women were married. Although there aren't any proof of it, I think it's because the mental and emotional pressure mother-in-laws place on their daughter-in-laws." The nurse sighed. "We see patients like your mom almost twenty to thirty times a year. We've established quite a familiar base with women who developed these type of symptoms. These women are married and have kids. It's very common for the women to take their children away from their husbands. Running away from the abuse. But most cases that were found, the women always seemed to abuse their children in some type of way. The abuse wasn't the same for any of the cases. Some kids were forced into life threatening situations, while others were less than harmful." The nurse informed them. "That's why I tell families of a patients like this not to hold anything against them. They hurt people who are closest to them but these women were not in their right minds." The nurse looked over at Jang Mi's mother then back to her. "And I'll also say the same to you." The nurse sighed. "The hospital finds it very important for us nurses and doctors to keep family relationships private. So you shouldn't worry about this getting out." The nurse said and bowed. "I'll be leaving you two to the visit then."
Jang Mi bowed a thanks before walking into the room with Choi Seung-Hyun following behind her. It was a lot of information to take in. Her mother developed symptoms similar to schizophrenia because of mental and emotional abuse. The nurse is right. These things were caused from her grandmother. Who she had yet to meet. She doesn't remember her but Ji Hoon should. Jang Mi couldn't believe it. Her mom was sick and instead of helping her, she pushed her ran away. Although her mom shot her, Jang Mi was starting to call the situation even between the mother and daughter relationship. Jang Mi didn't know if she could forgive her but she knew she wasn't going to blame her mom fully for the way she was.
Jang Mi walked up to her mom. "Mom?" She whispered.
"Say it a bit louder." Choi Seung-Hyun said, encouraging her.
Jang Mi sighed a big breath before doing what Choi Seung-Hyun suggested. "Mom." Jang Mi said more sternly.
Jang Mi's mother turned and faced Jang Mi. She sat there quietly observing Jang Mi's facial features before returning to look back out the window. Jang Mi's shoulders slumped in disappointment. She then remembered that the nurse had mentioned the fact she was on a few drugs to help calm her down. Jang Mi thought this was just her being high off the medication that she was taking.
"Mom." Jang Mi tried again. "It's me, Jang Mi."
Jang Mi's mother continued to look out the window with a blank stare. "My daughter? Jang Mi?" She asked blankly, still staring out the window.
Jang Mi surprised by her mom actually replying, she eagerly nodded in agreement. "Yes. It's me. Your daughter, Jang Mi."
Her mom just shook her head slowly, not removing her eyes from the window. "No. My daughter will never visit me. Not after what I've done." Jang Mi watched as the brim of her mother's eyes started to fill with tears. "Not after I tired to hurt my baby girl."
Jang Mi stood there with liquid pulled in her eyes. "What is she saying?" Jang Mi asked, not being able to comprehend the words she was saying.
"I'm saying you can't be my daughter." Jang Mi looked at her mother's eyes who looked back at Jang Mi with the same blank face. "I did something that was unforgivable. My daughter is dead."
Jang Mi fell back from the shock of her own mother's words but Choi Seung-Hyun easily caught her. "I'm not dead. I survived. I'm....I'm alive." Jang Mi said while Choi Seung-Hyun had both his hands on either side of her arms to support her. "I didn't die."
"I killed her with my own hands." Her mom said letting a sob escape her lips. "How can a mother be like that?" Jang Mi's mom stood up and started walking towards Jang Mi. Choi Seung-Hyun instantly placed Jang Mi behind him. "You can't be my daughter! She's dead!" She started swinging her arms and hitting Choi Seung-Hyun who took the hits. "I killed her! You don't tell me I have a daughter. I killed her." She yelled repeatedly.
Doctors rushed in and pulled her off of Choi Seung-Hyun. "We have to sedate her." They said talking to each other.
Jang Mi began crying at the loss cause of her mom. The nurse that spoke to them earlier, came and led both Jang Mi and Choi Seung-Hyun out. Jang Mi was busy crying and Choi Seung-Hyun was busy tending to her. She cried into his chest as they stood in the hallway outside of Jang Mi's mother's room. With the door closed, Jang Mi could still hear the screams of her mom claiming to have killed her daughter.
The nurse patted Jang Mi's back. "She's not right in the mind." She started. "I know it was hard for you but it was also hard for your mom. Even in her delusional state, she claims to have killed you. It's an uncommon reaction but her mind can't erase you from her head completely. So she killed you off in her delusional mind. I should've known this was the outcome of this visit." The nurse bowed. "I'm sorry it didn't go the way you wanted it to." The nurse said before walking away.
Choi Seung-Hyun wrapped his arm around Jang Mi's shoulder, while she wrapped her arms around his waist. Still crying into him as they slowly walked down the halls to exit the hospital. Jang Mi followed his lead until she felt the warm air of spring brush passed her. She stood up straighter, leaving Choi Seung-Hyun's embrace and wiped the tears away from her eyes. Jang Mi looked at Choi Seung-Hyun who looked at her curiously. In the parking lot of the hospital, Jang Mi went to lift up Choi Seung-Hyun's shirt. It was so uncalled for, Choi Seung-Hyun didn't have time to stop her nor did he have time to react.
Jang Mi examined his chest to see that it was already starting to bruise from the hits he took from Jang Mi's mom. She let his shirt fall and cover his momentarily exposed chest and started walking back towards the building. Choi Seung-Hyun started panicking and quickly took hold of her wrist stopping her in the middle of her mission in doing so.
"Where are you going?" He asked as he walked in front of her, blocking her way. Jang Mi held an angered scowl as she looked anywhere but at Choi Seung-Hyun. "Jang Mi." Choi Seung-Hyun said her name sternly.
"I'm going to go and give my mom a piece of my mind." Jang Mi said trying to side step Choi Seung-Hyun who already saw it coming. "Seung-Hyun!" She said frustrated by him.
"Why?" He asked ever so calmly.
Jang Mi sighed. "Look what she did." Jang Mi lifted his shirt again and pointed to his flawlessly sculpted chest. Choi Seung-Hyun looked around embarrassingly and pulled his shirt back down and out of Jang Mi's grasp. "She hurt you Seung-Hyun! I can't....I can't let that woman hurt you anymore. I forgive her for hurting me but you....I can't. That's unforgivable."
Choi Seung-Hyun looked down at her and sighed. He took her small frame and pulled her to his chest. He hugged her tightly and petted her hair while doing so. He couldn't believe how great of girl he was in love with. Although she was going to go and do something to her unstable mom, it made his heart flutter because of it was for the fact that he was hurt in the process. Things she did proved how much she actually did love Jang Mi.
"You don't have to do that. Jang Mi, you don't have to do that." Choi Seung-Hyun said pulling her away from him to look her in the eye. "I was protecting you. If that means I'll get hurt doing so, than I'll get hurt. I don't care. You're the only thing that can truly hurt me. If you get hurt, I will only blame myself."
Jang Mi sighed in defeat. She went on he tiptoes and wrapped her arms around Choi Seung-Hyun's neck. As easy as it always was, she took Choi Seung-Hyun's lips into hers. Without hesitation, he wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her even closer to him. He let her take the lead as they made out in front of the hospital. He could instantly smell her as their lips intertwined with one another. It wasn't long before they ran out of breath. It didn't stop Choi Seung-Hyun from placing small butterfly kisses along her jaw line and down to the scar that was on her shoulder.
"I love you so much." Jang Mi smiled.
"Not as much as I do." Choi Seung-Hyun smirked before pecking her lips. "Now lets go." Choi Seung-Hyun took her hand with his. "By the way, what exactly were you planning on doing to your mom?" Choi Seung-Hyun asked out of curiosity.
Jang Mi looked away from him. "I was going to ask the doctors if I could help sedate her."
Choi Seung-Hyun started to laugh and it lasted so long, that it had gotten to the point where Jang Mi had to drive instead of him. It didn't take long before Jang Mi had to pull over to the side so Choi Seung-Hyun could drive. Jang Mi's sense of direction led them to the opposite direction of Seoul. Which in the end was Choi Seung-Hyun's fault.
.....
I actually don't know if symptoms of schizophrenia is a real thing. I made everything up. Absolutely everything. I did have to check the spelling for schizophrenia though because I'm dumb. Please don't be offended by anything I wrote....I literally wrote them all blindly and ignorantly. I hope you guys enjoy this chapter though. Tell me your thoughts
