Chapter 80 - Tying Up Loose Ends
At the end of the month, the man that Nabi had hired to follow Kwon Jiyong came by her office. He handed her a large envelope and she handed him a small thick envelope that with a million won. She sat silently in her office staring at the large envelope that sat on her desk. She wasn't sure what was in it but it was making her heart beat heavily. She felt like it was so wrong. So wrong to do this. To have someone follow him and take photos of him. She had lingering feelings towards him even though it's been almost four months since she broke things off with him. She wondered if he moved on already. If he had gotten any songs to be produced. With that thought as motivation, Nabi took hold of the folder and walked over to the fire place in her office. She easily switched it on and watched as the fire burned. Without hesitation, Nabi threw the envelope into the fire and made her way back to her desk. Taking out her phone, she sent a text message to the man. She thanked him for his service and that she didn't need him any longer.
Nabi felt that, since she was the one who broke things off from him, she had no right to see what he was doing while she was apart. She felt like a crazy ex-girlfriend who couldn't handle being apart from him. She was the cause of this, so she wanted to bare the pain of the unknown. The suffering is her fault so she felt like she needed to live with it. She would no longer hold onto Kwon Jiyong after making him suffer so bad.
"I found a document." Nabi looked up to see Sang Hyuk enter her office holding a pile of papers. "These don't show too much information about your father but it does show the shareholders under this company."
Nabi raised a brow in confusion. "Why would you search up the shareholders from this company?" She asked.
"That's what I was thinking but I decided I should just check it anyways." He went up to her desk and placed the messy stacks of papers onto her desk while pointing at a specific spot. "The sales and profits this company is making and the pocket money the shareholders are making don't add up. How can their pockets be so deep when this company isn't making good sales?" He asked. "And only one of the shareholder's profit doesn't change compared to the other shareholders, so I searched deeper into his history and found that a few years ago, he received a large golf course that is stationed in America. It's the fourth of the top most expensive golf courses in America. It was handed to him by your father."
Nabi scoffed out in disbelief. "So because he can't do much with only four percent, he's using the other shareholders to go along with him in getting his way during those meetings." Nabi groaned out in frustration. "I thought they were taking sides and claiming their loyalty but my dad was buying them out." She sighed angrily. "This is why, no matter what I say during the meetings, they don't take me serious."
"Wouldn't it be easier to just buy shares from other shareholders? Why do it this way to complicate things?" He asks.
"That's because, buying shares takes shares. My dad only holds four percent which means he can't afford the cost of shares from other shareholders. Doing it this way is the only way unless shareholders give their shares up willingly." Nabi explained.
"How much percentage in shares do you hold?" Sang Hyuk asks.
"When my dad asked me to work for him, each shareholder gave up two percent of their shares to me. Enough to make me president. With this new information, now I know why they easily gave up their shares because they're all taking my dad's side." Nabi says biting her lips. "With my current position and the shares I hold, I hold sixteen percent in shares, as a president. However, the missing twenty one percent from my mom is in my hand so all together that's thirty seven percent." Nabi explained.
"That means each shareholder only holds up to seven percent or so. I don't know. I'm not good in math." Sang Hyuk says.
Nabi smiled. "It's alright. Look, this is great news. I got shares from them without even trying. My father kept asking me about the twenty one percent shares but I kept playing dumb."
"Sorry to bother you President Park but your lunch date with Joo Won and his wife is in fifteen minutes. Would you like to leave now?" Lina says entering Nabi's office.
Nabi nodded. "Yeah sure, lets go." She smiled. She looked over to Sang Hyuk and gave him a thumbs up. "Good job. Now keep checking other information. I need to get my hands on them somehow. We'll begin working when I come back."
Nabi followed Lina out of the room, leaving Sang Hyuk behind. Lina was going to be driving Nabi to the restaurant that Joo Won's wife picked out for them to eat at. From what Lina told Nabi, it was a classy place to eat. Nabi wore her regular work clothes which was highly fashionable since she did work for a fashion company. As they drove past buildings and crowded streets, they finally pulled to a stop as Lina parked the car on the side of the street. Lina was ready to get out to escort her but Nabi waved her off.
"It's okay, I see the restaurant." Nabi smiled. "Are you alright staying in the car by yourself?" She asked.
Lina nodded eagerly. "Yes. I'm fine. I need to catch up on a few dramas so you take your time."
Smiling and shaking her head at Lina, Nabi walked to the restaurant with tinted windows. She held her purse in the pit of her arm as she entered the restaurant. She took her shades off the moment she entered and spotted Joo Won's tall figure sitting at a table. His back was facing her as he sat next to a lady with long brown hair. Nabi made her way to them but made a sudden stop in her steps as she caught onto their conversation.
"Still. You should of told me that your bestfriend is a girl. Let alone the daughter of a very well known company. She's probably laughing at how pitiful I am." She says in an angry tone.
Joo Won visibly sighed. "If I told you, would you have wanted to come?" He asked.
"I guess you're right." She sighed out in defeat. "Didn't you say your bestfriend has a thing against arranged marriages?" She asked.
"It's because her parents went through the same process and their ending didn't go so well." Joo Won says. "Other than that, she's really nice. She's just going through some personal things at the moment."
"Alright." She turns and smiles. "That's good that she's nice."
Nabi had enough of her nose in other people's business, she decided to make her presence known. She walked up to the table and stood in front of the two with a big smile on her face. She placed her purse on the seat next to her and bowed.
"Hello, you must be Joo Won's wife." She smiled as she stuck her hand out.
She immediately stood up and stuck her hand out to shake Nabi's hand. "I'm Kang Eun-Bi." She bowed.
"It's nice to meet you." Nabi says as she sat down. "I'm sorry I didn't get to make it to your wedding."
"Don't worry. Joo Won oppa said you're going through a few personal things." She smiled kindly.
Nabi sighes. "Don't worry about me." She smiled. "Anyways, how are you two?" She asks. "How are you oppa?"
"Well, Eun-Bi is learning the ropes to the business. She's having a hard time with the -"
"Doctor terms." Kang Eun-Bi says cutting Joo Won off.
Nabi smiled. "You'll get the hang of it."
"What school did your parents send you to?" Eun-Bi asks.
Nabi plainly shrugged. "I only have a GED for high school."
Shocked at what she heard she asked, "Your parents didn't send you to college?"
She shook her head. "Nope."
"Then how did you run a business for five months?" She asked.
Nabi eyed Joo Won who avoided her glare by looking elsewhere. "You two must be really close to be hearing this much information about me." She says but rolled her eyes in defeat. "I had to learn the ropes within three months in Japan."
"Hi, are you guys ready to order?" Everyone looked up at the waiter who stood with a smie, waiting for their orders to be said.
Thus began the ordering and small talk between waiting for the food to arrive. During the meal, it was mostly Eun-Bi talking to Nabi. She was getting some information on things that Nabi learned from being the President of such a well-known company. However, Nabi explained to Eun-Bi the difference between the company Nabi was running and the company that she will soon be running the moment she gets the hang of things. Nabi runs a fashion company for women. Eun-Bi is in line to run a long line of hospitals. Two complete different fields in the same game. Although they run on the same line of business, both had two different ways of viewing things. Eun-Bi would have to make decisions based on real life situations that could mean life or death for someone, while Nabi made decisions based on who is willing enough to buy it. Both are run with the company mindset, but the morals between the two were different because Nabi's line of work didn't involve life or death, just money losing or money gaining. After explaining the difference to her, came more questions, which Nabi also didn't mind answering. Soon, their lunch was done and they just sat for a few minutes talking freely between each other.
......................
As soon as they exited from the restaurant, Nabi waved at Joo Won and Eun-Bi who walked side by side. Eun-Bi wasn't as bad as Nabi had thought. She did feel bad for missing the wedding. What human misses an important person's wedding? Nabi was just glad that Eun-Bi wasn't a complete monster because if her best friend was married to a horrible human being, Nabi would use all her power to stop that mess.
"Where are we going now?" Lina asked.
Inhaling, Nabi replies, "To my father's company."
Concerned by her words, Lina asked, "Are you sure?"
"Yes. I need to try to find things about him. I just don't know how." She sighed. "I need to do this. Somehow."
With that, Lina began driving down the busy road. The two conversed about what had happened inside the restaurant. Since Lina had began working for Nabi, the two had gotten close. To Nabi's surprise, Lina had a sense for designs and style. She picked up the ropes fast on what was acceptable in the high end fashion world and what was deemed too peasant-like. After hanging out with Lina for so long, Nabi noticed how extra nice Lina was. It seemed like she didn't have a bad bone in her body. Her manners were way better than Nabi's who held the status of a chaebol. Lina's personality was so down to earth and sweet. It always made Nabi's day when Lina would compliment Nabi's hard work because Nabi was having a hard time pulling through the day. During the day, she's busy working on pulling the company back onto it's feet and when night falls, she's in her office with Sang Hyuk pulling information together to get whatever dirt they could find on her father. However, it was proving harder than expected since Sang Hyuk and the special investigation's team that was set up hadn't yet found the dirty detective that was helping her father cover up his tracks. Sang Hyuk also had Nabi inform Lawyer Ahn that if Nabi's father was receiving help from a detective to cover up his tracks, he's most likely getting help from a lawyer. Which was why Lawyer Ahn barely bothered Nabi since she was busy finding a lawyer who would have anything to do with Chairman Nam.
"President Park, we're here." Lina says getting out of the car.
Nabi nodded and got out of the car. "Why did you park in the garage?" Nabi asked following her to the elevators. "It's fine if I walk from the front."
Lina shook her head disapprovingly. "You're going into your father's company. I wouldn't let you enter alone." She smiled as they both got into the elevators.
"I'm fine." Nabi says while looking at her oddly. "Seriously, you don't need to come."
Lina shook her head. "I'm very well protected. You said I don't have to explain anything to you so I won't. I just want to say that, even if your dad has a gang on his side, so do I." Lina says truthfully.
Sighing out of confusion, Nabi needed to clear something up. "Okay. I know I said you didn't have to explain your life to me, but how does a nice sweet girl like you have any involvement with gangs?" She asked.
Lina just smirked. "Believe me or not, my best friend is my connection. We're the total opposites from each other."
Nodding, Nabi had nothing else to say to Lina's weird friendship choices since they arrived. Lina followed behind Nabi as they crossed the large and open space of her father's large company. People wearing stylish business attire with a professionalism to their stride, walked in all directions of the lobby floor. The large glass windows reflected the sun perfectly, letting the perfect amount of light into the building. There were large seating areas where a few people sat talking in small groups, people who sat alone while reading a newspaper or tablet, and even some typing away on a lap top, all occupied by the workers under her father's company. Everything was black, giving the room a professional look. From the sofas in the large lobby to the security desk that sat in the front line where they were able to see. Nabi gave who ever designed the building and the interior some props for matching it so well to her father's soul.
Nabi and Lina entered the elevators where it took them up to the floor where the office of Nabi's father is located at. As they were making their way to turn down a hall, Nabi's feet instinctively stopped. Doing this caused Lina to collide into her back. Nabi stopped when she heard her father's angry voice, echoing off the marble walls. She didn't recognize the other person's voice, but whatever they were talking about was heated. Since becoming the president for her mother's company, Nabi has never heard her father this angry. Despite the fact that he was a rude turd, he never once scolded her for the way she spoke to him. It was mostly just taunting about the things Nabi lacked as a president but it was never to this extent.
"Why did you have to mention that in the meeting?" He snapped.
"Mention what? That Nabi is actually bringing that crappy company back to it's feet? I hate to say it to you, but you were wrong about her." The unknown man replied. "She learned the business ropes quite fast within the span of three months and you expected her to fail."
"Listen here you bastard, I told you she would fail and she will. She has to." Her father's voice boomed softly with anger as he whispered.
"Says who?" The unknown man asked. "You? You're not even sure Nabi has the twenty one percent of shares. How can I believe you?"
"I know she has the twenty one percent of shares because she's hiding behind that stupid cop. He's helping her." Her dad says in frustration. "I haven't gained her trust but I know she has it. I have a plan on getting the twenty one percent into my hands.
Nabi heard a scoff from the unknown man before he spoke up. "Yeah? And what is your plan? To walk into the company and demand it from her?"
"You're too naive." Nabi heard her father's evil chuckle. "There is evidence that I have someone putting together and once it is done, Nabi will take my fall for slushing money. I will no longer hold that dirty title. Instead, I'll earn the twenty one percent and father of the year award for wanting to discipline my daughter for her own good. All I have to do is get the blame pointed at her but it's been taking longer than expected to blame her for sixteen years of slushing money." He says laughing loudly.
All Nabi could do was look at Lina in shock at what she just heard.
