Chapter 8 - Dinner Is For The Rich
Nabi's heart was racing as she felt Kwon Ji Yong's hand on the small of her back. Leading her through the restaurant where the waiter escorted them to their own private room. Despite the fact that Nabi was wearing four inch heels, she was still a bit shorter than Kwon Ji Yong. He didn't seem to care since he had confidence in his appearance. He didn't mind that he wasn't the tallest man in Korea. He also didn't mind if his girlfriend towered over him while wearing heels. Luckily, she wasn't.
So far, since entering the restaurant, Nabi hated it. It was over crowded and too fancy for her liking. She was a simple person and would rather go to a food joint where yelling "ahjumma! One more please!" is normal compared to this fancy restaurant. She didn't like being escorted to a seat, she didn't like the fancy outfit she needed to wear to even walk into this restaurant without being looked down upon. She didn't like that you need to make a reservation or pay extra cash to get the best seat. All of this seemed to be too complicated to just eat a meal.
"Your private room." Nabi awkwardly bowed to the waiter who bowed and left.
"Go inside." Kwon Ji Yong says.
Nabi nodded as she walked into the room. Her eyes scanned the room and she sighed at how elegant the room stood to be. It was a long table that was able to seat four people. The room was dimly lit as the main thing the light pointed out was the chairs and the table. It was for the purpose of the windows that gave a breathtaking view of Seoul. Nabi sighed in content. She knew that this window is the best thing inside the restaurant. She didn't want to seem rude since Kwon Ji Yong offered to pay for the whole thing. He just didn't know that Nabi had already placed an envelope with money inside of his car for the expenses of her meal. She didn't need him to pay for her meals. She was very well capable.
"Ji Yong-ssi..." Nabi dragged off as she sat across from Kwon Jiyong.
"Hmm?" He said as he opened the menu and started scanning through it.
"I have a concern about this restaurant. I don't feel comfortable being here. It's too fancy for me." Nabi started.
Kwon Jiyong looked up from the menu. "What are you talking about? Is this restaurant not fit to your taste?" He asked.
Nabi shook her head. "No, it's not that. It's a very nice restaurant and I'm sure the owners worked hard to even create it to what it is today. I'm sure a lot of people like this restaurant." She said stumbling over her words.
"So what are you saying?" He asked Nabi.
"It would be better to go to a place less expensive." Nabi explained.
"Don't worry. I'll pay for it." Kwon Jiyong said, waving off her complaints and paying attention to the menu.
"I don't need you to pay for me. I can do that on my own." Nabi sighed. "It's not about money."
"Then what is it about?" He asked looking up from the menu.
Nabi sighed. "I'm not this. This place. I can't become this level."
Kwon Jiyong looked at Nabi. Her usual nervous state was gone and now replaced with someone who had an ounce of confidence. She looked like she knew who she was and she wasn't going to cower back from explaining just that. However, her words were fumbling out of her mouth and it didn't make sense to Kwon Jiyong. So he had to place the menu down and study her for a bit. One hand gripped the end of the table as if it were helping hold herself up. The other hand scratched her eyebrow as she continued fumbling over her words.
"Nabi-ssi, please stop talking." Kwon Jiyong said.
She huffed an air of frustration out as she decided to listen to him. He looked at her, really looked at her, and found something strange. He hadn't even noticed she was wearing makeup. Her eyes were big and round. Although they were slanted, her eyes were bigger than the average size in Korea. It made her look more innocent, like a doll. Her cheeks were, of course, plump and round, but on her left cheek, she had a light dimple. It wasn't as deep as Bae Jang Mi's ones but there was a dimple present on her left cheek. It was so shallow, he had to look closely.
Kwon Jiyong couldn't figure out what it was about Nabi that made her so intriguing to him. Her hair, dark at the roots and came out in that reddish-brown color, stopped below her jawline. In Kwon Jiyong's opinion, there were plenty of girls that had this aegyo styled face in Korea. Some unnatural but from seeing old photos of Nabi, he knew she was all natural. And if she did get a few touch ups, nothing drastically that changed her from the photo.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" Nabi questioned, feeling insecure.
"I need to know what your problem is with this place?" He asked. "Since we've parked, you've been complaining about this place."
"I don't have a problem with this place. It's just too expensive." Nabi explained.
"I said I'll pay for it." He said again.
She waved it off and sighed. "Look, I'm sorry, let's not do this right now." She said smiling.
"May I take your order?" A waitress asked, walking into the room, cutting off their somewhat disagreement.
Kwon Ji Yong went first with his order while Nabi went to her menu. She went straight to looking through the menu and could feel tears brimming her eyes. She held the menu up, covering her face. She blinked a couple of times, clearing her vision after a second of panicking. She sighed and whipped her hair out of her face. She concentrated on her breathing as she tried to look at the words on the menu. She continuously blinked until she could actually see the words more clearly. She was finally starting to calm down.
"Ma'am?" The waitress said addressing her.
Nabi looked up. "Huh?" She said and soon nodded. "Ah~ sorry. I'll have this one." She said pointing to a random item.
"Yes." The waitress nodded. "I'll take these for you." She said taking hold of the menus in both Kwon Ji Yong and Nabi's hand. "I'll be back with the wine."
Nabi's head snapped to Kwon Ji Yong and shook her head. "I can't drink alcohol."
"Why?" He asked.
Nabi looked away. "I'm allergic to it." She said.
He sighed. "I'm sorry, I didn't know."
Nabi shook her head. "We can let the waitress know when she comes back."
He nodded. Nabi just sat there with her lips pursed out due to her boredom. Kwon Ji Yong didn't know what to say either. His plan didn't go this far in his mind. He sighed and looked around the room. He then noticed that Nabi was doing the same except her lips were pursed out. He raised a brow and wondered what it was she was doing or thinking.
Clearing his throat, he started on his questions. "Nabi-ssi." He said bringing him to her attention. "I wanted to ask a few questions about you."
Nabi nodded. "Alright."
"I'll ask one question and then you can ask a question. We'll take turns." He said and received a nod. "Alright. What year were you born?"
"89. What about you?" Nabi asked.
"88." He said. "Where did you live before working at YG Entertainment?"
"America. Have you ever been there before?" Nabi asked.
"Yeah, I got to America often for work. Do you have a boyfriend?" He asked, again. Just to make sure.
"No. What are you currently working on?" She asked. "In the studio, I mean."
"Ah~ I'm working on putting together an album before December. I've recorded probably eight songs so far. I have about three more." He smiled passionately.
Nabi studied him. She watched as his eyes glowed while talking about his profession. She thought that she had a passion for music but she doubted herself after seeing Kwon Ji Yong just talking about music. It was obvious it was his number one thing. He's a workaholic but it suited him in Nabi's eyes. He seemed to like working a lot.
"What about you? What did you do before you came to YG Entertainment?" Kwon Ji Yong asked.
Nabi's expression didn't change from her blank one as she answered. "I was a nurse." She spoke.
"You were a nurse?" He asked surprised.
Nabi nodded. "Yes. More or less." She shrugged.
"More or less? What does that mean?" Kwon Ji Yong asked.
"It's..." Nabi started but the waitress walked in.
"Thank you for waiting." She placed both Nabi and Kwon Ji Yong's plate in front of them.
Nabi gasped at seeing her food. She looked at her plate and back at Kwon Ji Yong who had been staring at her plate in shock. Sitting on her plate was the biggest steak she had ever laid eyes on. The steak was stuffed with mushrooms as it hung out of the steak in a fashionable manner. She didn't know what she ordered but she knew it was going to be expensive. She looked over at his plate to see what he ordered and his portions were much smaller than hers since it was just spaghetti with Alfredo sauce and a few garlic bread pieces on the side. They both made eye contact.
"I don't think I can eat this all." Nabi said softly but he heard her.
"Do you want to switch?" He asked.
Nabi contemplated before nodding. "Maybe we should switch seats instead of moving around the food."
Kwon Ji Yong nodded. Soon, the room was filled with silence. The only sound that Nabi could hear was the loud thumps in her chest as she nervously ate in front of Kwon Ji Yong. As well as the metal forks and steak knives hitting the glass plates. It was getting harder for Nabi to bear the silence but she didn't want to be the first to speak. He looked content eating the pieces of meat with each bite, while Nabi, pulled and slurped at the noodles, having the sauce sloppily whip around her mouth. She continuously wiped at it as she continued to eat.
Nabi sighed with relief of having someone else in the room as the waitress returned, however she wasn't relieved as she brought in wine and two wine glasses. Kwon Ji Yong could see the panic in Nabi's eyes. He couldn't understand what it was about alcohol that made her so worried. Then he remembered that she had an allergy towards alcohol.
"I'm sorry. Can we cancel wine and just drink water please." He said to the waitress who smiled and nodded.
When she left Nabi spoke up. "Ji Yong-ssi, you didn't have to tell her that. You could drink wine. It's just that I can't."
"It's fine. Drinking wine alone when having company is boring. Plus, I'm driving back to the dorms, so it's best if I not drink." He explained. "Do you mind calling me oppa or Ji Yong-ah instead of Ji Yong-ssi. It makes me feel old?"
Nabi smiled a small smile. "Sure."
"So, whose turn is it to ask the question?" He asked. "I think it's your turn."
Nabi nodded. "Alright. Why did you agree to do this...this whole thing?"
Kwon Ji Yong leaned back in his chair. "Well..." he started. "It was because of you."
"Me?" Nabi exclaimed shockingly.
"Yeah." He said plainly, watching her cheeks burn. "Something about you that I find interesting. I tend on finding what exactly it is about you that is so interesting."
"I think you're mistaken." Nabi said swallowing down the disbelief at hearing his words. "I'm a very simple person."
"Good. Because I'm a complicated person." Kwon Ji Yong spoke.
Nabi huffed out an air of disbelief. She couldn't really comprehend what he was trying to say. She thought he found something wrong with her, and he was trying to figure it out. However, Nabi never thought of herself as 'hard to figure out' because she found herself to be a simple person. She didn't have much complications in life. Nowadays anyway. So she found there was nothing to figure out about her because she wasn't a puzzle game to be put together. She was already together in her own mind. She had everything sorted out.
"There is nothing worth figuring out." Nabi spoke with a confused expression.
"I think it's my turn to ask questions." Kwon Ji Yong said ignoring her. "Why did you move to America?"
"To become a nurse." She stated simply.
"Why did you become a nurse?" He asked.
Nabi shook her head. "I think it's my turn to ask."
Kwon Ji Yong raised his hands up in surrender. "Alright. Alright."
"Why don't you have a girlfriend already?" She asked. "I mean, you're pretty successful giving the chosen restaurant and your spaceship of a car. You also seem intelligent and nice. So why are you still single?"
"To be honest..." He smirked. "There wasn't anyone I found interesting."
Nabi's cheek burned red. "Are we ready to go?" She asked.
"It's my turn to ask questions." He smirked. "Why are you single?"
Nabi swallowed hard and bit her bottom lip. "It's complicated." She said simply. "Now, are we ready to go?" She asked.
Kwon Ji Yong had a sly smile. "Yes."
