Chapter 3 - Training the Trainees
Nabi entered the company early in the morning. Nobody seemed to be in sight. She would be working with a bunch of trainees. She would be helping them better their vocals and vocal warm ups, to help prepare for their debuts. She's the new singing coach just after the last one had retired. Nabi entered the small room where chairs lined side by side, facing the front of the room. She sighed and slouched into the chair that sat alone in the front of the room, facing the other chairs. She was nervous about teaching young kids about how to sing better. She knew the training process but she never knew how to teach kids. However, it was a favor her uncle had asked of her. She would be working as a vocals coach for a year under the company, and if she didn't like it, she could leave. It wasn't that bad and the pay was amazingly generous. She couldn't begin to start with the luxurious dormitory that came along with the job.
"You're here early."
Nabi jumped out of the chair and placed a palm over her fast beating heart. "You scared me!" She said looking at her uncle. "What are you doing here so early?" She asked
President Yang chuckled. "I work this early. However, I came to check up on you."
Nabi nodded, placing a lose strand of hair behind her ears. "Yeah. I'm fine. Just don't know when to start."
President Yang chuckled. "Nabi-ah, don't worry too much. Through out the day, you'll get better at it. The first group is a boy group. Most of them consist of rappers. Only four rappers and two singers. The rappers are the ones I'm worried about since they don't sing. They're good and learned a lot from the last vocal coach, but they still need help. They'll be here...." President Yang checked his watch. "they should be here any minute. I'll leave you to it."
Nabi nodded and bowed. "Thank you uncle." She says.
"Oh before I leave, I need a favor." President Yang says and continued without her protests. "I need you to speak with Kwon Ji Yong. Try to convince him to agree to my request."
"Wait, he disagreed with it?" Nabi asked surprised. "Why? Perhaps, is it because of me?"
"Don't be silly. He thinks the situation is crazy. Just go and talk to him after you're done."
Nabi sighed a nervous breath. She sat back down after President Yang left. She still hadn't forgotten about the favor that he had asked of her and that other guy who's name always seemed to slip her mind. She just couldn't deal with it at the moment. She needed to focus on working. She had a debt to pay and working was going to help her out a lot.
"Hello teacher." Nabi stood up and looked at the boy group that consisted of six members. "I'm Kang Joon Ki, leader of this group." He bowed politely.
"I'm Im Jae Myeong." One with black hair bowed.
"I'm Park Sung Wook." Another with light brown hair bowed.
"Hello, I'm Song In Soo." Another one bowed. Nabi looked at how young he was and guessed he was probably fourteen. "I'm the maknae."
"Hello, I'm Kang Won Sik."
"I'm Oh Jin Tae."
Nabi smiled politely as the members introduced themselves. "Hello, I'm Park Nabi. You can call me teacher or noona. Since we're not that far from age." Nabi made a hand gesture for them to take a seat. "Take a seat."
Nabi stood before them and sighed as all their eyes stared back. She inhaled and exhaled as she mentally prepared herself to teach them everything she had learned.
Nabi looked at all of them and sighed. "The way you're all sitting is wrong." She says.
Kang Joon Ki spoke up as all the boys looked at each other. "What do you mean, teacher?" He asked.
Nabi looked at them and pointed to their bodies. "To get the best airflow and the best sound, you have to have good posture. Now stand up please." All the boys stood up and Nabi noticed they also slouched when they stood up. "It's the same for when you stand. It's going to be hard to maintain good posture, expecially when choreography is added into the mix, but it's good to have straight posture for proper airflow to help you guys sing better. Even rappers."
Nabi went straight to Kang Joon Ki and gripped both of his shoulders into her small hands. She used force to push his shoulders back and used her feet to open his legs to match the width of his shoulders.
"Are you a singer or a rapper?" Nabi asked Kang Joon Ki while continuously placing pressure on his shoulder for better posture.
"I'm a rapper." He says.
"Stay like this and keep this posture." She demanded.
Nabi made her moves to the next boy, Song In Soo. Applying the same pressure against his shoulders to push back. She pressed a single finger on his forehead moving his head back. It caused him to straighten out his spine. But with that process, his shoulders slouched again. She went back to applying pressure against his shoulder.
"Keep your shoulder like this. Your stance is slouchy, so to keep it straight for a better posture, imagine someone pressing a finger against your forehead. Pushing your head back." Nabi says with her hands still on his shoulders.
"Yes Teacher." He replies.
They all had bad posture but Nabi didn't blame them. She then started all of them on vocal warm ups. She could easily differentiate the singers from the rappers. The singers were better at the warm ups and were able to keep up with it. However, it made more work for Nabi since there were more rappers than there were singers.
"Kang Joon Ki, Song In Soo, Oh Jin Tae, and Park Sung Wook, please step forward." Nabi demanded.
They all obediently did so. Nabi stood before them as the other two went to sit back on the chairs. The four stood taller than her even though she was older than them. She smiled happily at them.
"I can already tell you guys are rappers. It's not because of the way you all sound during vocal warm ups but because of the way you guys are breathing. Typically with singing, large intakes of breaths are easier to achieve but with rapping, it's all lyrical and rythm. With that, it's hard for rappers to be able to get the proper airflow especially when performing. I'll help you all with a few warmup techniques to help better the flow of air when rapping." She explained. She then looked to the two singers and smiled. "I'll also do the same for you two." She smiled.
Nabi then proceeded on helping them get proper airflow. It was all in her plan that she created in her head. The first lesson she would teach would be about proper airflow. She was glad she came up with something just to start off on teaching the kids. She was getting comfortable with teaching just hours after starting.
"Do you guys feel the difference in breathing?" Nabi asked but waved her hand. "You have to do this constantly. Do it every night before falling asleep." The kids bowed to her as they were getting ready to leave. "Joon Ki-ah, you're the leader, make sure nobody drinks anything cold. It wouldn't help your throats. So keep that in mind. Bone soup, warm water and tea." She added.
"Yes teacher." They smiled and bowed.
"Tomorrow we'll work on some more breathing exercises." Nabi waved as they walked out.
Nabi sighed and slouched into the chair. She let out a breath and closed her eyes. She placed a hand over her rapidly beating heart at being in a room full of strangers. Before she could rebuild herself up emotionally and mentally, she heard the room door open and a few high pitch giggles. Nabi sighed a nervous sigh before standing up and greeting her next set of students. This time they were a group of girls.
"Hello." Nabi said cheerfully as she started her next round of training.
........
After Nabi finished training the last set of trainees, who were a lot younger than she had expected them to be, she was ready to go. After leaving the practice room she stared at the stairs for almost a full twenty minutes. She was working up whatever courage she could muster up within her to go pay a visit to Kwon Ji Yong, like her uncle had asked. She decided to go and try to convince him on the deal.
Nabi felt awkward about the whole situation. Even if she agreed to it, just for her uncle, she found it odd to date someone falsely. She didn't know who would be crazy or stupid enough to even agree to such terms, besides herself. She was doing it for her uncle. Nobody else. He did explain that the company could be shut down because of the situation at hand, but Nabi couldn't care less. She was only doing this for her uncle.
Nabi finally went up the flights of stairs, headed to the floor where the recording studios and dance studios were on. She texted President Yang asking how she should meet him but he just replied with 'recording studio' in the text message. Her uncle was always lacking in detail when it came to some thing she found important. However, she knew he was always like that.
It was surprisingly late. Nabi hadn't noticed how late she was working but it was already passed mid night. She wasn't sure if Kwon Ji Yong was even in the recording studio. Her curiosity, however, was answered as she saw Kwon Ji Yong through the glass in the studio. He was currently sitting in front of a laptop typing away. His headset plugged into the desktop that was occupied by another guy and it made Nabi want to back out of the building. She didn't want to enter into the studio knowing there was another person inside.
Nabi watched as the other man stood up and Kwon Ji Yong took off his headset. They were talking for a little bit before the man packed up his stuff. Nabi stepped away from the door and hid right next to it. She watched as the door opened and the man walked out. He disappeared down the steps and Nabi went back to looking at Kwon Ji Yong. He had his headset back on and his head nodded to the music while his fingers typed away on the laptop.
Nabi slowly turned the doorknob and inhaled a breath before opening it and walking in. She could hear the loud music blasting from his headset. She slowly made her way to him. She was worried that she might accidentally disturb him while he worked, so she placed herself on the seat next to him. Out of his peripheral view. She sat slightly behind him and she just watched him from afar.
Nabi kept trying to bring herself up to at least tapping on his shoulder to get his attention but she couldn't get the courage in doing so. She didn't want to disturb him. He looked too emerged into his work. Even when he started stretching his limbs, she couldn't bring herself to disturb him. So she sat there after an hour and thirty minutes passed, just waiting for him. She dozed off a couple of times only to wake up from her small heat attack from almost falling off the chair. However, it wasn't until she heard a bang and it shook her completely awake. She watched Kwon Ji Yong rub at his forehead and groaning.
"Aish. That hurts." He groaned and clicked his tongue.
Nabi watched as he ripped his headset off and placed it onto the table. He stood up and stretched out his back and limbs. Nabi just sat there, watching him creepily. Kwon Ji Yong started packing his stuff up and when he turned around, his heart jumped out of his skin at seeing Nabi. Nabi just flinched at his reaction but stared at him with her big eyes.
Kwon Ji Yong held a hand over his fast beating heart and stared at Nabi in shock. "You scared me!" He said heavily breathing. "How long have you've been standing there?"
Nabi stood up and bowed politely. "I'm sorry I scared you." She sighed before looking around the room, avoiding eye contact with Kwon Ji Yong. "I came to ask you for a favor." She stated.
"Wait." Kwon Ji Yong breathed out. "How long were you in here?" He asked again, only this time more forward.
Nabi sighed and looked at Kwon Ji Yong. "A while." She said biting her lips before looking away.
"Why didn't you let me know that you were here? Maybe like tap on my shoulder or shout my name." Kwon Ji Yong suggested.
"I didn't want to bother you since you looked busy." She said.
Nabi folded her arms across her stomach at the awkwardness between them. He just stood there and stared at her. At some point his head would tilt to the side as if he was observing her. She felt discomfort from the way his eyes traveled all over her face and down her body. She felt like he was searching for something. She wouldn't know.
"What favor did you want to ask?" Kwon Ji Yong asks coldly.
Nabi looked at him and then looked away. "Well, it's more like a favor from President Yang."
"And what was that favor?" Kwon Ji Yong asks leaning his weight on the table.
"He wants me to convince you to do as he had requested." She says, looking at Kwon Ji Yong.
"Well, you're not very convincing." Kwon Ji Yong says. "Look, no matter how much you try, I'm still thinking about it. Whether my thinking is negative or positive, I'll let you know." Kwon Ji Yong started packing his stuff up.
"Is it because of me?" Nabi asked softly. No longer looking in his direction.
"What?" Kwon Ji Yong asked, turning around.
"Is it because of me that you turned the favor down?" Nabi asked again. After not getting a reply, she continued on with her rant. "I understand I'm not a model or anything for that matter, but if it's because of me then, you shouldn't....."
"It's not because of you." Kwon Ji Yong says cutting her off. Nabi watched as his jaw flexed in annoyance which she assumed was because of her. "Why would you even think you're the problem?" Before Nabi could answer, he stopped her from doing so. "Don't answer that." He sighed. "Like I said, I'll think about it."
Nabi nodded and bowed. "Alright."
Nabi walked out of the recording studio while Kwon Ji Yong watched her do so. She sighed at her failed mission to convince him. She knew he wouldn't change his view, even if she talked to him. She made her way down the flights of stairs and out of YG Entertainment.
The warm air of summer felt nice on her bare shoulders. The streets were of course crowded, even in the late night. She made her way to her apartment that was down the road. She always liked walking. It helped clear her mind. She just didn't like the city life where everything, the streets and restaurants, were always crowded with people. No matter what time of day, the streets were crowded. Usually into the night, after mid night hours, the streets were always occupied by drunks. All types of drunks but mostly the violent ones or the ones who try to take you out to dinner. It could vary between the two.
"Nabi-ssi!" Nabi looked around, not seeing anyone familiar. "Park Nabi-ssi!" Someone kept shouting.
She finally spotted a fancy silver car. Nabi knew instantly that it was more expensive than her life. In the driver's seat sat Kwon Ji Yong who had been calling her and waving for her to come. Nabi contemplated on pretending she hadn't heard him, even if she made eye contact with him or run away. His constant shouts for her name were drawing attention. He didn't care that the public knew who he was or what he was up to. Nabi knew this for a fact since he only wore shades. At night.
"Do I go to him or run away?" Nabi asked herself. "What would my mom do?" She sighed.
......
Awe he's so cute! GDs smile is just too perfect. He's giving me the feels
