Part Twelve - Interruptions
A/N: Hello, dear readers! Since I took so very long, I have created a longer chapter. I have to say I appreciate the few reading this and would like to say thank you! Though, I have to say this will turn out to be a huge slow burn for I am running out of ideas for this story. In other words, there won't be many updates after this! Thanks for understanding.
To the story!
-------------------------------------------------------------
To be honest, no one expected it.
Fire was blooming around the steel wreckage that used to be the side of the ship, the orange glow illuminating the forest the huge levitating metal object that housed at least three hundred Freal...
...and one human.
"Come on, there has to be an exit somewhere!" Hail panted, running with all her might down hall after hall, her new shoes clanking against the grate floor.
Two days earlier....
"Please?" Hail asked the doctor, grasping her hands together and begging.
"No," Dr. Halo deadpanned, writing on his god forsaken notebook that he carries around all the time. He had the remote for the sliding metal door that was locked at this point in time, and wouldn't let Hail explorer or get any exercise outside the room.
"I won't cause trouble, I promise!" Hail pried.
"You are not fully healed, be patient. You still need to rest for one more day for the Vallisis to leave entirely."
"But I feel fine!"
"Human, go lay back down. You can wait."
"But Dr. Hal-"
"Human."
The sudden change of tone in Dr. Halo's voice made Hail stop, taken aback. Dr. Halo finally looked up from his notes, a hard look painted on his wrinkled features.
"Now that you're done whining and finally paying attention," The Freal doctor continued, "There are some complications with another race right now, and everyone involved is tense. We are on the brink of war. If a scenario happens that we are to be attacked by them, we need to know where you are to get you out safely. Thus, I cannot allow you to go out right now. Do I make myself clear?"
Hail was bright red with anger, but with great effort she swallowed it and let logic back inside her brain. It must be standard procedure, Dr. Halo is only looking out for her. In the end, Hail nodded and Dr.Halo looked slightly relieved.
"Now then. Go lay down and rest. You are to be rehabilitated tomorrow." With that, Dr. Halo used the remote to open the room's only exit, and closed it behind him, it immediately locking itself. Hail was left in deafening silence again, left to think about what she had just heard.
"Complications...? Brink of war?" Hail questioned quietly aloud, turning and walking back to the twin sized hospital-looking bed, tossing herself on it with a heavy sigh. Looks like she's stuck here still, in this mind-numbing room of boredom. turned over and faced to tiled ceiling, not feeling tired at all. Her legs begged for a good run, and her arms cried for something to do.
Most of Hail's time was spent tracing the patterns in the white walls, attempting to do handstands or tripods for long periods of time, examining the tools left in the room by the Doctor, throwing the scalpels at the wall and lodging them, making small shapes with small amounts of the least toxic of her powers, and childishly jumping on the bed. With these small distractions, Hail managed to make it through the grueling hours until she was greeted again by Dr. Halo.
"You better fix the holes you made in my walls," the Freal old doctor grunted as he made his way back to the exit after checking up on Hail's vitals and calculating the Vallisis in her body. He left once again after he had stopped and told Hail to get some rest. Hail complied by flopping onto the white boring bed again and curling into a comfortable position. With a remote attached to the bed, Hail clicked one of the many buttons and turned the room's light off.
She glanced at the dimly lit round-shaped clock on the wall in Freal numbers. It looked extremely similar to the set up of a regular clock on Earth, so it wasn't hard to read or estimate.
10:54pm.
......
........
...........
1:33am.
Hail started at the wall blankly, willing herself to grow tired. It wasn't working as well as she hoped. Her body was relaxed, but it flowed with unburned energy. It was like her body was a spring under pressure.
She hated this feeling so much. Hail wanted to sleep, but her brain wouldn't let her. Sitting up, she fabricated the least of her toxic powers and winded the string of liquid around her fingers, not sure what else to do without waking the Freal. She did this until the repeated movements and the small energy release calmed her body enough to flop onto her back. She looked at the clock again.
1:45am.
Hail groaned, rubbing her eyes with her palms softly, then dragging her fingertips down her face. It was killing her slowly, she just knew it.
The blonde shuffled around on the bed, trying to get comfortable again. Nothing she did seemed good enough.
Hail froze when she heard the metal door slide open, blue light flooding the room, a shadow cast in the doorway. She turned to see the good Dr. Halo, surprisingly no clipboard with him.
"Sorry, did I disturb anyone?" Hail asked, swinging her legs over the side of the bed to face Dr. Halo. In return, the good doctor shook his head.
"No, thankfully. With your fidgeting, Im surprised you haven't woke half the ship. I'm here to get you to rest. You need to relax, otherwise you won't be able to recuperate tomorrow."
"I know," Hail groaned, "but I just have so much energy! I need to do something, anything!"
"Lay back," Dr. Halo ordered. Hail looked at the old Freal in confusion. He doctor gestured to lay back, so Hail did so.
The doctor walked over to the bed side and placed his hand across Hail's forehead. Dr. Halo's hand was surprisingly cold, making Hail shiver.
"This should help," Dr. Halo muttered loud enough for Hail to hear. Suddenly, she felt a calming sensation across her forehead, a red-ish glow from the doctor's hand. It was like the pent up energy had opened a door at her head, and everything was draining out like a waterfall. Hail suddenly felt extremely tired, her eyes drooping and the relaxing feeling overwhelming. Hail didn't want to move now, maybe in a couple of months she would move just to change positions in sleeping.
"There. Sweet dreams, human," the good doctor added as he closed the door behind himself as he left the small room.
Hail barley heard him though, since she was drifting off into sleep the second he removed his hand.
-------------------
The night went by fast, and Freal soldiers had to literally drag Hail out of bed for exercises for recovery. She had to do a multitude of tests, stretches, and had to be inspected for any sign of Vallisis as Hail worked.
Only did it appear when Hail couldn't move anymore from the strenuous work. It wasn't much, just her fingertips, but the bracelets did their work and suppressed it like the papers from the cavern said. It has been concluded that the bracelets were her lifeline, and will die without them.
After being almost carried back to her room, a Freal lady brought some food for Hail. The human looked at the food like it was a confusing paper test and she couldn't even understand the first question.
The food in question was a strange type of goo made of bits that looked like a strange mixture of green and purple sauce. Hail looked to the Freal lady who looked nervous at her reaction.
"It is sort of like your races Mac and cheese..." The Freal girl explained, looking at Hail like the human was going to lash at her at any moment.
Hail smiled genuinely, politely replying, "Thank you. You guys do so much for me, even though I'm a human...I...can't thank you, or the Doctor, or Reid, or the others enough."
The Freal girl visibly relaxed, and made this weird circular motion with her hand that Hail had seen Dr. Halo do to superiors. A salute of some kind?
Hail did her own salute, crossing her arms like a sheild over her chest, then uncrossed them. A salute Hail knew well...the thought brought back some horrible memories, but Hail quickly crushed them to continue the balance of happiness in the air.
The lady, who Hail learned was named Lufrey, talked with Hail a little more until Reid popped in for a visit. Apparently those two were like sister and brother, telling and swapping hilarious stories about how they caused mayhem in their hometown. Those two were so funny Hail could barley breathe after each story.
Hail told some good stories, too, about her people, making them laugh at how the kids at the HQ would prank their caretakers in really tactical ways. They compared their homelands. Apparently the Freal has had some tough times with something equivalent to the human Civil War. Hail felt sad for them and wished them the best since this was Lufrey's first and last time with their ships crew, and was going to be dropped off at their homeland to swap information.
The two comedians left after awhile, and it was about 9pm by the time Dr. Halo came around to do the magical thing with Hail's head again and knocked her out once more.
-----------------
-----------
It was the sound of explosions that woke Hail from her deep and happy slumber.
She jerked herself awake, instantly on alert. She heard screaming and there was black smoke that basically covered any light that could get in outside her window.
Wait...I don't have a window.
There was a unatural hole in the wall, not big enough to climb out. Even if Hail could, she would fall to her death. As far as Dr. Halo told her, the ship was about two miles human measurement-wise off the ground.
Hail got off the bed and felt the ship shudder, almost making her lose balance. The room's door opened to reveal Reid in a frantic frenzy.
"Human! You have to get off the ship!" Reid panted, running over and taking her arm. He dragged Hail out of the room and took off down the hall with Hail on his heels.
"What's going on?!" Hail gasped, feeling the ship shake once more.
"They're here! If Halo told you about the Civil War our race is having, the ones we were at war with are attacking the ship!" Reid explained breathlessly.
Hail grunted, "yeah, the doc did tell me about that last night. So soon, though?!"
"We are taken by surprise; somehow they got past our scouts and the ship heruity scanners! I have no idea how they did it, but I was given orders to get you out of here!"
Reid took a sharp turn, and Hail stumbled after him. Without as mush as a warning, a ball of flame engulfed the hallway in front of them, the wall crashing in with a loud bang. Reid skidded to a halt, avoiding slamming into the blockage. Hail almost bumped into him, tripping over her own feet. Reid's grip kept her steady once he had his balance back.
That's when from the cloud of smoke, stepped out four soldiers dressed in complete black. Head to toe in strange body armour, glinting in the sunlight that poured in from the recently created gaping hole in the side of the ship.
Reid stepped back a little while Hail got into a defensive position, analyzing the situation.
"Galroits! We had an agreement!" Reid shouted, "you signed! You promised you'd leave us alone! Tralete monetsa dre clon frale!"
Hail looked to Reid, then to the humanoids, now dubbed Galroits, for their response.
The black clad Galroits said nothing in reply as they each reached for a small stick on their belt, almost robotically. They pressed a button simultaneously, the sticks lighting up a bright blue. Reid tensed.
"Oh, jret! Hail! Take cover!" Reid exclaimed, Hail listening managing to get behind a huge piece of rubble from the initial blast. All four threw their devices in Reid and Hail's immediate vicinity. Covering her head, the female human looked for Reid to see if he got cover as well.
However, Reid was not as lucky as Hail. Multiple flashes of bright lights overtook Hail's vision as she screamed her friends name as he turned to ash.
----------------
Hail had melted and utterly destoryed the Galroits with one of her strongest poisons, capturing all her rage in one go.
Reid didn't make it, but Hail would make sure his effort didn't go in vain. With her face still wet, she kept running, trying to find a way out.
Stumbling a little, she took another turn but quickly back-pedaled when she caught sight of more Galtroits down the hall.
Hail wanted nothing more then to run and abandon the ship, be safe on the ground away from the conflict. But, she knew that she was in debt to these people.
The Freal helped her when she needed them most.
It was about time to pay them back.
Okay, new plan, Hail thought to herself, find something on these Galtroit dudes. Find a way to clear them out, and look for any Freal survivors.
Hail raised her hand palm up and formed a nice ball of glowing green poison, giving a determined look around the corner.
Starting with this group of Galtroit goons...
