Call Me Anthony
My name is Anthony Seahand, and I am a surfer from Florida with a dark secret. One I don't really want to talk about. It's the middle of Winter in Orgeon, and my brother, who goes to a college up here, told me it's a great place to pick up chicks. Decided to come, as waves are low on the Florida coast right now.
I spot a girl with strait brown hair and icy blue eyes.
There's my target, now back in character.
I approach the girl with a warm smile. She smiles back. I sit at her table. "Hey," I greet, "name's Anthony. Nice to meet you."
"I'm Riley," my target returns in kind, "nice to meet you to."
She smiles so sweetly, but Cle Chae feels nothing. I've learned not to get attached. Did in my first book, but never again. Anyways, back in character.
"What's your major?" I inquire.
"I major in psychology," Riley explains, "mostly the legal side of it. How to tell when people are lieing, insanity pleads and the like."
How to tell when people are lieing? Huh. Maybe this will be a little interesting after all.
"What about you?" Riley asks, "what do you study?"
"I'm not in college," I explain, "I'm a competitive surfer down in Florida. Pays better than you think."
"Ah," Riley smiles, "I see."
I wanna get this done so I guess I'll make Anthony a bit more forward with his advances.
"Are you busy later?" I ask, "cause I know of this great BBQ joint. How's dinner sound? On me?"
"Sure," Riley replies, "why not? Meet up here around six?"
"Sure," I reply, "sounds good. See ya at six."
I leave the food court.
"What the fuck was that!?!" The Corporate demands."
"What's wrong?" I inquire.
"You forgot the surfer lingo!" The Corporate replies, "you trying to get this release canceled?"
"No," I reply, "sorry. I was just..."
Why didn't I use surfer lingo? Was I distracted? By what? I try to think, but my mind goes blank. I can only think about Riley. Come on Cle, focus. You have a job to do. Riley doesn't matter. This world doesn't matter. Anthony loves Riley, but Cle Chae does not.
"I'll work on it," I reply.
"Good," The Corporate replies, "and remember, the job takes priority."
"Of course," I reply, "even if it is cliché."
"Very good," The Corporate smiles, "carry on."
The Corporate disappears into the snow. I look up at the sky. Snow falls heavily from above. I am reminded of another job. A world I killed.
It's best not to think of such things. Those worlds were dead either way. It's best to keep moving forward. After all, I have a job to do...
