Chapter 46 Family Dinners Are Not Peaceful
The doorbell rang bringing the attention of Havana, Klaus, and Elijah to the front door. The Salvatore brothers had just arrived for dinner and were waiting to be let in. The person closest to the door answered it.
"Damon!", Havana swung the door open and greeted her best friend with a hug.
"Well isn't it my favorite person" Damon hugged her back and smiled innocently at the growling hybrid behind her. Klaus's death glare seemed to have intensified on the Salvatore brother after he let go of his woman and acknowledged his presence by stating, "Oh, it's you. My least favorite person." Damon was not happy with the dinner arrangement but at least he was going to enjoy it.
"And you, still a heartless piece of shit who tried driving my cousin off a bridge the other day?" Havana raised her brow at the emotionless Stefan who walked passed her completely ignoring her words.
"Let's discuss the terms of our agreement like civilized men, shall we?" All three of them followed Klaus into the dining area where Elijah was waiting for them.
Each of them took their seats. Havana and Damon sat beside each other on one end while the Mikaelson brothers took the hosts' chairs at each end of the table. It was only Stefan who stood in front of the empty chair in front of his brother and Havana.
"I didn't come here to eat Klaus. In fact, I didn't want to come here at all but I was told I had to because you would hear us out." He spoke out confidently.
Klaus chuckled to himself expecting this kind of behavior from Stefan, "Well, we can sit and eat or I can reach down your throats and pull your insides. The choice is yours."
They all began to eat apart from Stefan and made small talk from here and there. No one had yet brought up any talk regarding the last coffin nor the deal they were proposing to each other. Klaus commented on Stefan's loss of appetite as he stared at his plate in silence refusing to even lift any cutlery.
"Eat." Damon told his sibling "I thought we agreed to leave the grumpy Stefan at home."
Stefan gave his brother a look before he gave in and ate a piece of meat from his plate.
"That's the spirit," Klaus commented. "Isn't this nice? The five of us dining together. Such a treat! Is that what you had in mind when you pulled the dagger out from my brother?"
Havana drank some more wine mentally preparing for the fighting to commence.
"I knew how he felt bout you so I figured the more, the merrier." Damon joyfully continued eating trying to poke Klaus's temper even more.
"Elijah and I had our fair share of quarrels over the centuries but we always make it through."
"Kind of like you and Rebekah right? Where is she by the way?" Stefan asked although he knew the answer to that question already. "Last I checked, she was still daggered because you were afraid to face her."
"If you're referring to the fact that I've killed our mother, I've already come clean to Elijah." The Mikaelson brothers shared a look of agreement.
Havana poured more wine into her cup taking in her front-seat view of the brothers versus brothers clapback.
"Hey Stef, remember when you killed Dad? Dial down the judgment till dessert." Damon said to his brother.
"So Stefan. Where is the lovely Elena tonight?" Elijah turned his attention to Stefan in an attempt to lighten the conversation. However, it managed to do the exact opposite.
"I don't know. Ask Damon." He bitterly mentioned his older brother who rolled his eyes and avoided eye contact.
It was important to note that Elijah had only been awake for less than a day and was only informed about the vital events that he had missed throughout his time with a dagger plunged into his heart. Neither Klaus nor Havana found it necessary to also fill him in on everyone's personal drama. Especially the part wherein Damon and Elena had kissed.
"I'm sorry you missed so much brother." Klaus burst out laughing unable to contain his amusement at what was happening. He tried covering his laughter with a napkin in vain while explaining, "It's trouble in paradise right now. You see, Stefan still has humanity switched off and there's already a whole drama in that. But it got worse since Damon and Elena decided to share an intimate mome-" He stopped when Havana kicked him underneath the seat.
"Thanks, Havana." Damon loudly said to his best friend to whom he had told that information in confidence to. The woman looked down in guilt muttering a "sorry" to him before glaring at her partner who exposed her for not being able to keep a secret. "It's best to put Elena in the 'do not discuss' pile."
"Seems like the allure of the Petrova doppelganger is still so strong. Given your shared affection for both Elena and Katerina, I think it's best to also tell them about Tatia." Elijah looked at his brother for permission who only scoffed.
"Now, why should we discuss matters long since resolved? Tatia was just child's play compared to actual true love." Underneath the table, Klaus placed his hand on Havana's thigh squeezing it. She took a sip of her wine unsure about her feelings on the matter. She remembered the subject well, specifically on the rare occasions when Klaus would open up about his past during their travels together and before she had any knowledge of the supernatural. About when he and his brother got into a sibling rivalry over a woman they both had feelings for. Of course, he left out some information including the part where it happened a thousand years ago and that she was the first Petrova doppelganger.
"I say let them hear it," Havana said placing her wine down and holding Klaus's hand which was still underneath the table. The Mikaelson brothers looked at her unsure of what to do but she just smiled gently at them and nodded for Elijah to continue.
While Elijah told the tale of two brothers fighting over the same lover, Klaus came closer and whispered sweet reassurances "I have never loved anyone Tatia included as much as I love you, my little dove. It's always been you who holds the key to my heart. No one else."
Havana knew that Tatia was no threat and that Klaus harbored zero feelings over an infatuation he had a millennia ago. She accepted his words trusting the love they had for each other. She mouthed an "I love you" at him before taking another bite of her meal.
By the time that Elijah was finished with his story, the Salvatore brothers decided that it was time to discuss the deal.
"So here are the terms of this proposal which is very simple. Klaus gets his coffin back and in exchange, he and the original extended family leave Mystic Falls forever. Me, Elena, and Stefan live happily ever after. No grudges." Damon raised his glass to his deal to which Klaus disagreed.
"Elena's doppelganger blood ensures that I will always have more hybrids to fight those that oppose me. I will never leave her behind. But say I do leave her here under your protection? How long until one of you turns her into a vampire? Or worse, how long before she dies caught between your feuding? The belief that you have thinking you can protect her is simply a delusion. The worst thing for Elena Gilbert is the both of you." Klaus's speech seemed to have stcuk a chord between the Salvatore brothers who visibly tensed at each word.
"Its time for you to put something on the table then. We've made our offer. Now you counter." Damon challenged.
"Okay. I offer Elena's future happiness. What she needs right now is to be rid of the two of you and to fall in love with a human. Maybe that nice football player, the blonde one-"
"-Matt Donovan?" Havana asked in surprise. Damon replied with a disgusted look on his face, "Are you serious?"
"Yes. Why not?" Klaus confirmed. "They'll marry, live a long life, and pop out a perfect family. They'll continue the Petrova line and every few years I'll have a new doppelganger to drain and never run out of hybrids. After you hand me back the coffin, I'll ensure her safety for the rest of her natural life." He stood up in front of Stefan offering a handshake. "Do we have a deal?"
Stefan stood up and shook his head satisfying the hybrid. However, Kaus's smirk didn't last long. "Nice try Klaus. No deal."
Immediately, Klaus broke Stefan's arm and dragged him to the fireplace burning his arm in the process. Elijah also took that as a cue for him to pin Damon to the wall in case he might want to try saving his brother. Havana stood up yelling for them to stop but nobody paid attention.
"Stop!" Damon yelled at Klaus.
"Bring me my coffin before I burn him alive." Klaus had enough of these games. He wanted his coffin back now and nobody was going to stop him. Havana knew that.
"Damon please just get it." Havana begged. Despite Stefan being an asshole recently, she knew that the her was in there somewhere. She wasn't going to let him die.
"Fine! I'll get it." Damon said defeatingly leaving the room.
"Follow him brother. You keep him honest. And when you do return, I will make good on my promise to you and I will hand over our family." Klaus told promised Elijah. The older Original was eager to be ruinited with his family and was willing to do anything to get them back. He followed Damon outside soon after.
In the meanwhile, Stefan was still struggling in Klaus's grip desperate to break free. The smell of burnt flesh circulated around the room as Stefan's arm was burning having been forced into close proximity with the flames. The raging hybrid no intention to let go of him despite Havana's pleas.
"Damn it Nik! Just let him go! They'll hand over the coffin already!"
"There's no use Havana. He'll just kill me anyways when Damon brings out the coffin."
Klaus had let Stefan go but did so harshly by pushing him away from the fire. "You really have given up. Where's the fight? Where's the ripper?" He taunted the Salvatore brother who was stumbling back. When Stefan managed to recover, he pushed Klaus back. Havana moved towards them ready to pull them apart when the sight of Elijah coming back into the room with Damon surprised her and Klaus.
"Why haven't you left?" Asked Klaus eyeing the two of them while a woman they compelled brought out a tray. Stefan moved to the otherside of the room where they were.
"Where are your manners brother? We forgot dessert." Elijah explained pulling away the cloth that covered the contents of the tray. On top were two shiny daggers confirming that two of the siblings were awake. Both Havana's and Klaus's eyes widened at the sight of this processing what was about to come next.
"What have you done?" Klaus whispered at his brother. His eyes were wide in shock and betrayal.
"I've learned not to trust your vulgar promises anymore, Niklaus. We're doing this on my terms now." Elijah explained.
Another man appeared behind Elijah. He had the same features as the two brothers yet appeared younger. He was also wearing clothing that was not of this era's.
"Long time, brother." He greeted Klaus moving dangerously closer to him.
"Kol" His name left Klaus's lips making Havana gasp remembering the name of one of his brothers. Klaus walked backwards in caution holding up his hands in surrender at the retaliation of his siblings. "Finn don't!" Another man who looked older than all of them appeared and stabbed Klaus's hand using one of the daggers in the tray.
Havana counted the two new men as owners to the daggers in that tray. There was no sight of the dagger that belonged to Rebekah. She whipped her head around looking for her blonde friend to appear and as if on cue, she did behind Klaus who tried to escape but ended up in her direction.
"This is for our mother." Rebekah exclaimed stabbing him in the stomach. Klaus stumbled backwards and was caught by Kol who held his arms back imprisoning him.
"You're free to go. This is family business." Elijah announced to all the non-family members. Stefan and Damon started making their way to the door when they had to hold Havana back who tried running towards Klaus's side.
"No! No way! What are you gonna do to him Elijah?" She asked and received no reply. She asked the same thing to Rebekah who stayed silent as well.
"Havana just go." Klaus groaned in pain.
"I'm not leaving you!"
"They might hurt you next to spite me."
Damon placed a protective hold on Havana after the mention of that. She stared wide eyed at Elijah and Rebekah whom she considered as friends. They both scoffed at what their brother offended at what he had to say.
"We're nothing like you, brother. Havana's a friend to us and deserves far more you." Rebekah spat out.
"She can stay. She is family now after all." Elijah announced staring at the ring on her neck. The other siblings also saw the huge rock but remained silent despite the shock on their faces. Elijah then turned to Damon, "But you must leave. I understand your concerns for Havana but I guarantee you that no one shall harm a single hair from her head."
"I'll be okay. You can trust Elijah on his word." Havana nodded at her best friend.
"Are you sure?"
"Yes." She answered without any hesitation.
Damon's eyes went back and forth from his best friend to the Originals before leaving the house using his vampire speed.
"I like what you've done to the place, Nik." Rebekah retorted before throwing a glass vase at a painting. Havana winced being that it was her who bought the vase herself from an online auction using Klaus's credit card.
"I wanted it to be for all of us. A place where we could all call home. A place we could all be a family. None of us would have to be alone again." Klaus explained yet there was no empathy rendered from any of his siblings who all looked at him coldly.
"Well, you're right. None of us will be. You're staying behind." Kol let him go and all the Mikaelson siblings stood on one side of the room facing their outcasted brother.
"We're leaving you Nik. Right after I kill that doppelganger wench. Then you will be alone. Always and forever." Rebekah added.
"I will not be alone!" Klaus screamed at them in anger. He referred to Havana who stayed stuck in the middle between all of them.
"It only takes a matter of time until you hurt you again and she leaves you for good, Niklaus. Then she will get to live her life with you as nothing but a distant memory." Havana narrowed her eyes at Elijah speaking for her but before she could speak out, Kol added "I vote we just compel her forget you brother right now. Fast track her freedom from being stuck any longer with you."
"If you take her away and run, I will hunt all of you down."
"And then you will become everything you hate. Our father." Elijah bit back. That was when Klaus had officially lost it screaming death threats at his siblings who stood with the same stern expression on their faces. They all were going to follow through with their promise to leave him behind. They all were gonna do it...until the door opened and another person walked in. This time, it was a woman.
Havana's curiosity grew as to who this woman was after seeing the faces of all Mikaelson siblings turn white in utter shock. The siblings silently gave way for the woman to walk towards Klaus who could not make eye contact.
"Mother" Rebekah let out finally revealing the identity of this mystery woman. The very same woman who was supposed to be dead and locked away in the last coffin.
"Look at me. Do you know why I'm here?" She questioned Klaus.
"You're here to kill me." A tear rolled down from his eye.
"Niklaus, you are my son. And I am here to forgive you." She said before turning to her family. "I want us to be a family again." It was only her to do all the talking as everyone in the room was still in shock processing how she is even alive right now. It seemed to hit Rebekah the most as she was the one who had the most tears flowing down her heels. Esther would console her daughter later. For now, she had another person to confront. "You're name is Havana, is it not?"
"Y-yes." Havana felt her body stiffen under Esther's intimidating gaze.
"And you are my son Niklaus's wife?"
Havana felt all eyes on her now. She looked at Klaus who also did not know what to say. The best she could come up with was "N-not yet?"
"I asked a question and I received another question as an answer."
Havana thought of nothing except how intense their mother was. The older woman continued staring at Havana with an emotionless expression. It made Havana feel as if the next words that were about to come out of her mouth were words of disapproval towards her. It shocked her that she did the opposite.
"You have a far too beautiful woman Niklaus to not make a wife out of her yet. Nevertheless, I accept you Havana into our small little family. Welcome to the Mikaelson clan."
