Chapter 29 What Could've Happened

Monaco

"This better be good you know I hate surprises."

"Love, you love surprises."

"Okay, you're right. But hurry up so that I can take this thing off!"

Klaus soft chuckled at his impatient girlfriend. He said nothing more and continued leading her by the waist to her surprise despite her wanting to already take the blindfold off.

"Okay, we're here."

Havana's blindfold was slowly removed. She squinted her eyes adjusting to the natural light before widening them in awe at the view in front of them. They stood on a cliff overlooking Monaco and its opulence. Below them, yachts and smaller boats floated on the glistening blue waters beside the city and its rows of architecturally beautiful buildings.

This was her first time in the glamorous country. It had been on her bucket list ever since she started solo traveling but couldn't afford to go. Now, thanks to Nik and years of saving (despite Nik's insistence to cover everything), she finally made it. In addition to that, she was excited to attend one of the most prestigious events of the year, the Monaco Yacht Show. Rather than spend the day shopping for something to wear to the event tomorrow, Nik whisked her out of her plans and to her 'surprise' despite her objections.

"This is beautiful Nik. How did you find this?"

"I stumbled upon it some time ago. It's one of my favorite spots in the city."

"It's one of mine now too." Havana's eyes sparkled in adoration before digging for her camera. She quickly snapped a photo. She was excited about having it developed later.

After carefully placing her camera inside her bag, Klaus gently grabbed a hold of her hands and kissed them.

"As much as I adore your fascination with the view, this isn't your surprise."

"It isn't?" She slightly filters her head.

Klaus said nothing but gave her his signature grin. Despite being together for four years now, Havana felt weak in the knees every time he did that. But before she can say anything else or give in to her temptation of making out with him, Klaus turned her around. There parked in front of a couple was a red Ferrari.

"You didn't." Havana gasped.

"But I did. Happy birthday my love." He kissed her tenderly on the head as she still shockingly stared at her present.

Havana shook herself out of her trance and turned to look at him. He stood towering over her still smiling. "Don't get me wrong. I love it but Nik it's too much."

Klaus laughed, "No it isn't, Love. It's my duty to spoil you. Anyways, I know how much you are obsessed with Ferrari with F something."

"F1 Nik. You know me, I love things that give me thrill! That includes racing around the world which reminds me, we need to get tickets soon. Gosh, I'd want to gate keep my obsession with F1. I hope they don't explode in mainstream popularity soon."

Nik laughed at his little dove's rant and began kissing her all over her face before they would take the new car out for a speed test.

Present Day

The two stared at a contemporary painting of a race car speeding through an underwater tunnel. Apparently, the artist intended for it to be a social commentary piece about dictatorship. Havana was no art major and found herself scratching her head trying to connect the art to the topic.

"Any luck on your end painter?" She asked Klaus who had the same puzzled face.

"I'm afraid not. I miss the glory days of art."

Havana chuckled and gently smacked the brochure on his arm "Art snob"

They stumbled across an art gallery on their way to the hotel. They came from their dinner which turned out to be unexpectedly pleasant and peaceful on both sides. On record, it was the longest time they managed to go without fighting. This reminded Havana of the old times. Before she found out about vampires, Klaus basically being the king of vampires, the curse, compulsion drama—everything.

Her mind told her to keep her guard up bit she had to admit.

It was nice feeling normal with him.

"Don't get me wrong love, I appreciate new forms of art, old or new. But this artist is clearly not going anywhere." Klaus said out loud in a bored tone.

Havana shushed him trying to cover her face from the people who overheard him. However, she couldn't help but laugh.

They left the art gallery and went back to the hotel. The walk there was filled with silence, not an awkward once, but a peaceful one. The two did not give each other glances as they refused to let the other one see the faint smile planted on each of their lips.

They finally made it to the front door of their shared room.

"Wait," Havana stopped him from opening the door. He stared at her confused. She felt her heart thumping at what she was about to say. "I don't hate you okay? I may say things at times and openly proclaim of smothering if your sleep even though we both know that won't do the job-anyways, what I'm trying to say is that I never hated you." She let out a little chuckle before her tone turned serious. "Despite everything that has happened Nik."

The Original lost his composure not knowing what to say. A rare sighting for Klaus Mikaelsson. Until he suddenly caressed Havana's cheek which she leaned onto. They moved closer until their were mere centimeters apart.

"My little dove-"

A phone ring made them break apart from the trance. Klaus thought about ignoring it until he saw who was calling him. In an instant, the ferocious Klaus Mikaelsson was back with his cold exterior.

Havana stood awkwardly waiting for him to finish talking to the person on the other line. She was also rather occupied herself with processing what had just happened...or what was about to happen if.

"Get your bags Havana. We're leaving for Chicago in twenty minutes. I'll go get Stefan." He turned to leave before being stopped by her.

"Why are we going to Chicago?"

"A witch who'll help me is there. Her name's Gloria."

Havana's stomach dropped. She thought she'd never have to hear the name of the witch who helped her escape Klaus again.
