Chapter 24 Little Hopes of Change
Season 3, Episode 1
For the past two months, Havana was surrounded by constant change. After leaving Mystic Falls behind, she, along with Klaus and Stefan found themselves traveling through the southern states searching for a man called Ray Sutton, another poor soul on Klaus's list of 'People I am obsessed with finding only to ruin their lives. She knew little of Ray besides the fact that he was a werewolf, but frankly, she didn't care. Havana was mostly preoccupied with two things; worrying over Stefan and the constant bickering between her and Klaus.
Havana felt guilty for not trying hard enough to protect her best friend's younger brother. The Stefan who didn't have any tolerance for violence and bloodshed was now somewhat of a killing machine. He always only had one thing on his mind: blood. The red liquid called out to him like a chum bucket in a pool of sharks. He did try his best to feed when she wasn't looking although it wasn't working. "At least his humanity is still on", Havana kept consoling herself with the words
And then, there was the devil himself-Klaus Mikaelson. The man responsible for her dreams and nightmares coming to life. From the start of this unfortunate summer adventure, (back at the first hotel they stayed in when Klaus purposely walked in on her showering), Havana weighed the outcome of not fighting back anymore. She envisioned him doing whatever the hell he wanted-murder and all-without getting a mouthy remark from her that will inevitably lead to another explosive argument. Klaus was simple. His world revolves around him being king and not taking a single criticism from anyone, including her. She was tired of the constant bickering and fiery arguments. But as Havana lay awake on the bed with him (and the pillow boundary between them), she asked herself...
Where's the fun in that?
The Aussie smirked in the darkness formulating a rather simple and petty plan. Ruin Klaus's summer one way or another. Havana knew him pretty well and how to set him off: innocent teasing, small acts that actually infuriate him, smart mouth comments, etc. She may be away from everyone else she loves but at least Havana will entertain herself for the summer by annoying the crap out of her ex-fiancé.
Tenessee, Present
"Rudy!"
In shorts and knee-high boots, a blonde woman emerged from inside her white house and into the patio shouting her dog's name. She walked further outside the protection of her property whistling for her dog to come. She bent down to pick up one of Rudy's toys and stood up only to be met with Klaus standing in front of her. She flinched visibly startled by the stranger who appeared out of nowhere.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to startle you."
Havana snickered at Klaus's American accent. She was seated in the car with Stefan who, unlike her, didn't show any emotion.
"Can I help you?" The blonde woman wearily asked.
"Yeah, my car ran out of gas a couple of miles back. I feel like I've been walking forever and this is the first house I've come to so I was just hoping If I could use your phone?"
"Don't you have a cellphone?"
Stefan whipped his head to the sound of a seatbelt unbuckling.
"Don't you da-" The door shut in front of him. He starred at Havana walking towards Klaus and the woman shaking his head. "Damn it."
"Oh, he does have a cellphone!"
The two looked behind them to see Havana approaching them with a smile on her face. She politely held out her hand for the blonde woman to shake "Hi, I'm Havana. Sorry that my idiot husband had to bother you. Well, soon-to-be-ex-husband anyways. First, he's been lying to me for the past five years and now he forgot to check the tires of the car before forcing me to come to this road trip of a lifetime!" She purposely continued rambling.
The blonde woman nodded uncomfortably while Klaus's jaw hardened.
"Anyways, I threw his cellphone out the window cause I got so sick of him calling his mistresses every five minutes-hold up, since I'm leaving him anyways, maybe you would be interested! I heard he has a thing for blondes-
"Sweatheart-" He roughly pulled her towards him. "I think that was enough joking for one night. We need to get the car fixed remember." Klaus coldly stared down at her silently telling her that the next thing that comes out of her mouth might have consequences.
"Of course, sweetheart." Havana looked back at the woman who stayed uncomfortably silent for the past two minutes. "So, may we please borrow your phone?" she smiled innocently.
"S-sure."
"Great. May we come in then?" Klaus asked.
"No. I'll just get the phone and bring it out to you."
Klaus sighed loudly letting go of Havana. "I thought you country folk would be more trusting." His real accent was back-but more vicious and threatening. The woman starts to move backward in fear of the stranger in her yard. Before she can run away though, Klaus speeds in front of her and grabs her throat.
"Now show me that southern hospitality sweet pea." He compels her.
As the three head into the house, they hear another woman's voice coming from the kitchen. She was facing the counter with her back facing towards them, her hair was curlier and her completion a few shades darker.
Her southern accent was on full display as she said, "I bet a hundred dollars that dog ran off to a house with better air conditioning."
She turns around only to halt in her place upon seeing the frightened look of her friend standing in front of a man and woman; one looking like he's dangerously unpredictable while the other looking like she was forced to be there. Nevertheless, the woman in the kitchen was ready to get the hell out of whatever this situation is.
"I'm told Ray Sutton lives here," Klaus spoke first.
"He's almost never here. He's always on the road." She answered with less hesitancy compared to her friend.
"I expect, however, that he makes it home at least once a month." He smirked hinting at his knowledge of what they were. "So tell me where he is now. If I have to make you tell me, it's going to be more infinitely painful for you." The blonde woman starts whimpering.
The other woman stays still before bolting through the hallways passing Havana who had done nothing to stop her. Although unsurprised, Klaus shot a glare at Havana before dragging the first woman to the entrance of the house where the other woman screamed upon seeing Stefan waiting for her on the other side of the door.
"I love it when they run." Klaus enthusiastically expresses.
The woman who almost ran away gave up. "He's in Tulley. It's near the border. A bar called Southern Comfort up on highway 41. Please let us go."
Klaus smirked before ordering the blonde woman to let Stefan in the house. He gave further instructions to Stefan before walking out of the house; to kill the blonde woman quickly and make her friend suffer.
Stefan, who had been aching for a bite since he had set eyes on her, wasted no time and started drinking her blood. He blocked out her screams and continued killing her without remorse. Her friend stayed in the corner unable to move and just cried. Havana shook her head, she didn't like seeing him like this.
She tried pulling him off with all her might but her strength was nothing compared to his. He latched on like the hungry leech he was. "Stefan fight the hunger! Don't ruin yourself! You're better than this." Havana continued helplessly pulling him away only to stop when Stefan let the woman go falling limp to the ground-dead.
He turned to her; eyes still dark with veins bulging out and mouth full of fresh bright red blood. "I'M ALREADY RUINED HAVANA AND I'M NEVER GONNA BE BETTER." He yelled at the top of his lungs. He continued walking towards her looking hungrier than ever. Havana shrunk from where she stood, her wide eyes stared horrifically at her once protecting friend.
She screamed and covered her face as he lunged towards her. However, she was left untouched. She slowly uncovered her eyes to see Stefan pressed against the wall with his feet in mid-air all thanks to Klaus who held him by the throat.
"I brought you along mate to help me with my errands and not to create more problems."
The Original tightened his grip making the Salvatore brother squirm a little. Unable to say words, Stefan nodded at Klaus. He was dropped to the ground but didn't stay there for long before he went to the other woman and drank her blood. Now, her screams filled the house.
Havana was still frozen in her place, heavily startled at the incident. For the past two months, she has seen him ruthlessly attack and kill people at Klaus's command. However, never in her life would she think Stefan would actually hurt her. Her eyes trailed up to Klaus who genuinely looked concerned.
"I-I-"
"-come on." Klaus cut her off roughly grabbing a hold of her arm leading her outside. They continued walking towards the car when midway, Klaus scolded, "I told you not to leave the car. I told you not to intervene whenever Stefan and I are doing business. I told you to not be stupid and act like-"
"-like what?! A concerned friend who cares what you are doing to him?!" Havana pulled her hand out of his tight grasp. She pointed toward the house where the screaming can still be heard. "Look at him! He's becoming someone he tried so hard not to be!"
"Well you're more than a hundred years too late for that because he already is a vampire Havana. He will always be a bloodthirsty creature. It's in our nature!" Klaus threw his hands exhausted with explaining his truth. Blood was what kept vampires alive. Blood was what kept them stronger. Bunny diets only held them back from their true potential. Bunny diets made them weak and more prone to death. "Not everything is all sunshines and rainbows, Havana. I know you and I know that you think the world would be a better place if it would bend to what is 'good' and not 'bad'. But the world is not black and white, it's a million shades of grey. You need to accept that. I will never be the hero you want me to be, Havana. But I will be the villain who would sacrifice the world to make sure you are safe."
Havana stood in front of him silent. Speechless. After a while, she spoke with a much softer tone. "Every man is worthy for redemption, even you Klaus. I also know you and you're also not the monster you think you are."
