Epilogue
Han knew he was lucky to be alive, which Leia wouldn't allow him to forget for a moment, but living hurt a lot worse than death probably did with the burn across his chest. If Zheth hadn't been there... his son's lightsaber would've gone right through his body. He dismissed the thought and walked over to his wife, trying to hide the pain behind his grave smile, which as usual, Leia saw right through.
"Should I have a droid bring more painkillers?" She asked, trying to sound professional in her concern.
"I'm fine, painkillers aren't going to help anything." He waved her off and glanced over at the young scavenger girl, Rey, who was watching Finn's unconscious form. "How's the kid doing?"
"Stable but unconscious... he should live." She responded with a glance over at Rey and Finn.
He gave a sigh of relief, at least he wasn't going to witness someone dying at the hand of his son; it was bad enough knowing Ben had killed as it was. "I tried to bring our son back, he wouldn't listen... Nothing is left of Ben."
"Don't say that!" Leia growled.
"I looked into his eyes, Leia, there was nothing but the dark side." He hissed back quietly. "I wish it wasn't true..."
"Because it isn't true." She responded.
Han shook his head. "Snoke has gotten too far into his head, I'm not even sure if Luke can bring him back into the light again."
Leia looked a bit defeated as she turned away and walked off to handle some other things around base. "I will not give up on our son just yet."
Han stared after her, wanting to go after her, to reassure her he wouldn't give up either, but couldn't find it in himself to move. Was their son even still alive? Rey said she'd fought him and left him in the snow... was he still on the planet when it was destroyed? On one hand he hoped that monster with his son's face was gone for good but on the other Han knew he would never forgive himself if Ben had died there. He should've done more, tried harder, but he hadn't. Instead Zheth had to intervene before Kylo Ren could murder him in cold blood, the two of his children turning on each other in combat. He had lost two of his children because of his foolish actions, that realization bothered him to no end. He never really got to know them either; though he did help raise Ben until he went for training it wasn't enough to see whom his son really was.
"I wish I had forgiven her." Poe's voice broke his thoughts as the pilot walked over somberly. "She was always on our side, no matter what she tried to force herself to believe. Zheth was a good person deep down, hated showing it unless it was through her sarcasm and remarks, but she would've wanted to go out how she did."
"Yeah well, she probably got that from me." Han admitted; a bit surprised that his daughter had turned out similar despite never meeting him.
"She's the only hired smuggler here that General Organa went to see herself." Poe glanced over at him. "Always one of the favorites too... I guess we know why now the General treated her like family. Zheth reminded her of you."
"Poor kid." Han sighed, wishing to have a conversation or something to distract him from family problems, which was partially what led to all of this mess in the first place. "But the life she chose was for those who live fast and die young... for most at least."
"I think everyone here chose that path." Poe said as he watched BB-8 roll slowly over to comfort Rey.
Chewie came in and saved him from talking on the subject anymore, demanding that he come look at the work the Wookie had done to fix the Falcon back up to its former glory. He gave a farewell to Poe before following Chewie, soon his copilot would be flying off to send Rey to Luke for training, which left him behind to heal much to Han's distaste. But no one wanted to fight with a Wookie so he had let Chewie win.
"Well, what do you think Chewie?" He questioned, seeing that the ship was back in order as it had been before all those people had stolen it. "Think the girl will be able to put up with Skywalker?"
Chewie gave a few growls that he took to be: 'are you sure Luke can handle Rey?'
"You're right." He grinned. "The galaxy better watch out when those two team up because that Rey girl, she's already one hell of a fighter."
