Chapter 4

Grace's POV

It's been 2 weeks since sickly school had started and everything seems to be going smoothly. I've been getting used to the school life and the, waking up at 5:45 am routine, every morning.

May has been alright. She's getting her sleep, without the sleeping spell that Anna's mum offered to put on her after the original one ran out. As much as I hate it, she's been keeping an eye on me.

She's been coming with me to visit Peter after school most of the time. I can tell that she's trying to make me cheer up after she heard me crying on Peter's bedside before school began. I'm grateful but I want to be looking out for her. Not her looking out for me.

Today, the head teacher wanted to bring the school together to talk about Peter's fundraising. Even though I said that they were allowed to, it still hurts me to walk into the room surrounded by everyone.

"You got this." Mat says as he interlocks his fingers with mine. I smile weakly as we walk into the hall. A screen is up at the front with our school's name on it, all set up for the slideshow ahead.

We sit in one of the seats that are vacant and I take a deep breath in. Everyone starts to fill the seats near us, chattering to their friends. Mat squeezes my hand as the teacher walks down to the front.

"Quiet students!" The teacher's shout and everyone quiet downs. Once the level of noise is how he wants it, he continues.

"The first week of school is always exciting!" He says, getting met with a groan from about every person in the room. "OK....To start, the thing I want to talk about is the new updates to the school!"

He mummers on, causing everyone to sigh. I twiddle my thumbs together, tearing my nails off from my fingers. Mat grabs my wrist to stop me from putting me through any more pain and I reluctantly put my hands by my side.

"Calm down. You can ask to leave if you really want to." Mat tells me, trying to whisper it so that he wouldn't get told off. I shake my head, biting my lip.

"Our main subject today is about a former student that went to our school." He clicks the thing in his hands and it changes over to another slide.

It's a photo of Peter, a school photo, of him smiling. I see this photo regularly as we have it on the mantle piece. His brown hair is neatly brushed to the side and his eyes have a twinkle in them, from the editing.

"This is Peter Edwards. When he got injured, he was in year 10. Now he would be in University." The teacher continues and I shuffle restlessly.

"They're acting like he's dead. He's not dead! He's going to get better!" I say as quietly as I can to Mat.

"Peter had a fatal injury 4 years ago and has been in a coma since. You might've heard about this from friends or family that had a relationship with Peter. He has a sister who goes to this school," He clicks it again and a photo of Peter, May and I come up.

May is in Peters' arms, still as a 2-year-old toddler back then. I'm in front of Peter, smiling brightly, my red hair running down my shoulders. I remember taking this photo almost a week after I got my powers. I and Peter were as close as ever then.

"But, his family has been running out of money to pay for his treatment and we have offered to do a fundraiser for him!" He says happily, clasping his hands together.

"We're not running out of money!" I criticize him again, getting frustrated. Mat attempts to calm me down by making me look at him but I avoid his glance.

"Grace...." He says like he's been rejected.

"Please spend as much money as you can on the fundraiser so that we can raise get enough money for Peter Edwards! Oh and remember its non-school uniform on Friday and you must bring in £1." He says and then walks off the stage.

Everyone starts to talk around us, the level of noise rising by the second. Some conversations are about random things while others were about Peter. I notice a few people looking at me across the room, people pointing towards me.

I hunch back into my seat, avoiding any more glances from people. "We should go..." I say to Mat when I notice the others around me start to get up. He nods, not looking at me, still hurt from my comment.

I follow after him out, squeezing through the crowds to catch him up. "Grace!" I hear a familiar voice shout and my breath hitches. I turn around quickly but I find no one there.

"Peter?"

**********

"And don't forget to do the homework!" The teacher says as I'm skipping out of the door. Finally done with the day and I'm able to go home!

A wide smile fills my face as I sigh happily. I take out my phone from my pocket and check any updates.

Missed Call: Mum

I frown. Why would my mum call me during school? Wouldn't she just tell me at home? Unless it's about....

When I get that thought, I urgently call her back. It rings for a moment, then she picks up.

"Mum?! Is everything alright?" I ask her, my voice filled with worry. I hear her take a deep breath in before replying.

"Grace. We're thinking of moving Peter up North. There isn't any space in our local hospital for him to stay." She breaks in, her voice cracking slightly as she says it.

"I-I...." I feel the tears welling up in my eyes, my legs beginning to go weak. I crouch down to the ground, sitting on the stairs near me.

"We're really sorry Grace. We need you to break the news to your sister-"

"No. No, we're not moving Peter! He's my brother and I can't let him go that easily!" I shout through the phone and press the button that ends the call.

My whole world seems to be falling apart. I even ignored my own boyfriend when he was trying to comfort me. My head falls into my hands as the tears fall down my face.

I don't care who sees me right now. If they make fun of me for crying in school, I'll ignore them. It's not like I haven't been doing that for the past 4 years.

Suddenly, I feel a movement beside me. I stop crying but I don't lift my head from my palms, afraid to see who it is.

"You know, if you tell people what's bothering you, they can help. Yea it might not be the best advice but its good to get your feeling out." I look up and Mat sits next to me, a distance between us.

"Mat...I'm really sorry."

"No. I should be sorry. I haven't been making sure how you are and I've been letting you get like.....this. I'm a terrible boyfriend."

"Mat you are not a terrible boyfriend! You've been doing everything you could possibly do to try and support me! And I've been blocking you out." I shake my head, disappointed in myself.

"If you want to listen to me.....I suggest you get counseling!" He says to me and I sigh.

"I'll think about it, ok?" He relaxes at my reply. I get up from the stair and wipe a few stray tears that had fallen down my face. Mat gets up with me and hugs me tightly.

"Come to me when you need to.....okay?"

"Okay."
