Chapter 24
Grace's POV
I knock on the door with a shaking hand, as I stand on the porch of my Best Friends house.
A part of me doesn't believe what May told me. I've known everything about Mat and I defiantly know he wouldn't do something like this. If he didn't love me anymore, he would tell me. And that's why I've gone to get back up.
Footsteps run to the door and it swings open. Anna immediately engulfs me in a hug saying something like 'stupid boy' under her breath. Of course, that's when the waterworks start. "Come upstairs, we can discuss everything."
She drags me up to her room by the hand and guides me to sit on her padded bean bag. Immediately, she grabs Ice Cream, two spoons, and tissues before pulling up a chair beside me. "Anna. Thank you." I say weakly.
"Grace. I don't want to ever see you like this again. So I want to get this done quickly so I can get that boy out of our lives before he can do any more bad things. That's if he is guilty." She stops, looking down at her Chocolate Fudge Ice cream.
"Anna. What is it?"
"Was it May who told you this? That Mat cheated on you?" She asks, holding her breath. But I nod my head with my eyebrows furrowed together in confusion. "When I and Cleo were walking home, she was saying that May's changed since she came back. I didn't want to ask any questions but now this has happened. I'm not sure."
I pause for a moment. If May had changed, why would she do something like this? Make up something to turn my life upside down? Anna coughs before continuing. "Is there a possibility that Mat hasn't cheated on you and May is doing this for.....L?"
"No. May will never join his side." I stand my ground, sticking up for my sister. "May is the sweetest girl we know. She is not the culprit here, Mat is." I say but instantly regret it as I'm putting the blame on a boy I still love.
"Ok. That's settled then. Mat cheated on you. So, Miss Edwards, what's his punishment?" Anna spoons some food into her mouth with an evil glint in her eye. A part of me like this but another part feels like I should be hearing his side of the story before we jump to planning his death.
"Anna, he doesn't even know I know yet. I don't think he saw May in the forest." I mention and she puts her thinking cap on. After a while, I see a lightning bolt shine in her eyes and she quickly jumps up.
"We could surprise attack him!" She shouts with excitement and the lights flash on and off. I sigh, shaking my head. "Or," She rolls the R, "We could attack him using guns!"
"Anna you basically just said the same thing. And both of them end up with him getting injured and us being arrested. Do you really want that?" I ask and she goes silent, giving me my answer. "We're not hurting him, understand? I still love the guy."
"Ew! Don't go all mushy on me!" She cries and pushes the ice cream towards me, "Go mushy on the Ice Cream." She laughs and then sits back into her chair. She leans forward towards me, our noses almost touching.
"He's still our friend. You've known him since you were 7-"
"Don't bring that up again. It was embarrassing." She groans. "I can't believe he still remembers it as well. Pulling me back and stuff." Anna quietens as she thinks about the death of her dad and how Mat helped her when he got killed. "Anyway! I want to make sure one thing though, you're not going to break up over text are you?"
"God no," I say as I'm reaching for my phone in my back pocket. I turn to Mat's contact and begin the text. "I'm going to ask if we can meet up at the Park. Maybe then we can talk and I could...possibly break up with him."
"Girl. If he cheated on you, it's an instant break up. You can't let this rule your life." Anna instructs me and I let my fingers tap away on the screen. Once I had finished I show it to her. "Can you meet me in the park in 15 minutes?" She reads out loud.
"I know that's evil of me, dumping him in the same place that he asked me out in." I fill a pang of pain hit my chest. Then I hear Anna's breathing hitch and then she turns the phone to me. A new message comes up onto the screen.
"Is everything ok?" I read from the phone. I almost feel like crying again. This is how much of a nice person he his. Yet, how could he still do something like this? "What do I say?" I ask my friend as the tears come again.
"Just say Yes with a full stop at the end." She instructs me and I do it. He sees it but doesn't reply which makes me sigh. "Let's get you ready to break up with your boyfriend."
"When you put it like that, it sounds awful," I complain. She gives me a look and then gets to work.
It takes her 10 minutes to instruct me on what to say, how to keep my guard up and also don't let him get to me before chucking me out the house and sending me on my way to the park. She wanted me to bring a few weapons with me but I instantly put her down.
And now, I'm sitting on the seat that I and Mat have been joking about for the past 4 years. 'The Love Seat,' we called it. And every time someone brought it up, we would fall into fits of laughter.
It's not until I see him walking up that I feel that I should've brought back up. Worry is laced in his face as he quickly makes his way towards me. Keep it cool Grace. You've got this. I don't look in his eyes as he approaches me.
"Grace? What's wrong?" He asks and sits beside me on the love seat.
"I've heard something." I begin, my voice raspy as I speak. But he doesn't seem to have a reaction like he doesn't know what I'm talking about. "May saw you in the Forest when we were looking for her."
"Why didn't she come out? I looked everywhere in that forest but I could find her." He says but I feel the hesitation in his voice. He knows something is up.
"She saw you with this blonde haired girl." I look up at him to meet his big blue eyes. My breathing hitches but I continue anyway. "Mat. Who is she?"
He doesn't say anything but his face shows a lot of emotions, some that I can't read. Disbelief, anger, and confusion. "What blonde girl? I don't know any blonde girl other than the ones who I barely talk to at school."
"The blonde girl that May saw you kissing Mat!" I shout which makes him go quiet. The tears begin to stream down my face. "That girl. May said she saw you kissing her before you left to meet up with us. She was about to come out but didn't want to stop your make-out session."
"What have you been lying to me about Mat?" I finish my speech.
"Grace. There was no blonde girl. I went to the forest, I looked for your sister and then left. I'm not the one lying to you here. She is!" Usually, when I cry, he wipes the tears away from my face. But this time he didn't. "Don't you trust me when I say that I didn't kiss the girl that your sister has made up?"
I get up from the loveseat. "My sister is not lying," I say sharply. "Why would anyone think that?" I think of when Anna was talking to me. She thought the same thing.
"You came here to dump me didn't you?" His voice turns to hurt. "Huh. I didn't think you would stoop that low. At least you didn't do it by text." He snarls, getting up also. My heart shatters. "Grace. Until you're able to see that I'm not lying, we're having a break."
"M-Mat." I stutter as he begins to walk away. He stops and I hope for a second that he might turn back around but instead, he continues and walks away from the park.
What have I done?
