Chapter Nine: The Morning After
"Who was that?" Kitty asked as Rogue put her phone down on her nightstand.
"It was just Remy, wanting to get together t'morrow," Rogue said as Kitty looked away.
"At least you still have a boyfriend," Kitty said and reached for a tissue on her nightstand.
"I'm sorry, Kitty," Rogue said and slid off her bed and walked over to Kitty's. "Don't think ah was rubbin' it in or somethin'."
"I would never think that, and besides I broke it off with Lance," she said and used the napkin she held in her hand to remove the tears that were still in her eyes. "It just hurts is all."
"Ah know it will, but things will get better," Rogue said and reached out to touch her hand.
"No!" Kitty said and jerked away. "I don't..."
"Ah know, but ah can be careful," Rogue said trying to reassure her. "Remember ah lived with it a lot longer than you."
"Thanks, Rogue," Kitty said and saw a flash in the window. "Look." She pointed to the window and Rogue barely saw the shooting star. "I'm making a wish."
"And what's that?" Rogue asked and saw the once lost twinkle in her friend's eyes.
"To be me again," Kitty said and kept staring out the window.
"Me too," Rogue said and her wish had more to do with something other than her powers. "Ah think we should get some sleep. We got that session with the professor in the morning, remember?"
"Yeah," Kitty said and her face lightened. Rogue walked back over to her bed and was about to roll back the covers. "Don't fall through the bed again."
Rogue looked back and gave her famous death stare before picking up her pillow and throwing it at Kitty, and the younger girl laughed for the first time in a what seemed like a long time, then throw it back on Rogue's bed.
"'Night, Kitty," Rogue said in a soft voice.
"Sweet dreams," Kitty said and smuggled into her bed.
Rogue turned off the light feeling more relaxed and content than she had in her whole life. Perhaps things would work out like they should.
********************************************
Rogue was the first to wake the next morning, and for some reason she felt different. She decided to test her power and tried to phase through her pillow, but nothing happened.
"That's strange," she said and thought back to the night before. That star kitty wished on. Could it be her powers were back? She ran over to the dresser and put on a pair of her gloves just for safety. They were her green sheer gloves that she wore for everyday use and made a beeline over to kitty's bed in the attempt to wake her.
"Kitty, get up," Rogue said shaking her.
"What?" Kitty said disoriented and then suddenly she fell through her bed and screamed. "What happened!?" she realized she was under her bed and screamed.
"Are ya alright?" Rogue asked her.
"Yeah," Kitty said dragging herself out from under her bed. "I just stuck myself with a hairpin. "But how did I get under the bed."
"Ah think our powers are back," Rogue said and held up her hands. "Ah can't phase."
"Well, we need to know for sure," Kitty said and looked around.
"Just a tap?" Rogue asked and took off her glove.
"Okay, but don't knock me out or anything," Kitty said and Rogue rolled her eyes. Rogue gave her finger the lightest touch and Rogue felt a memory that was obviously Kitty's and she laughed out loud.
"How could you be thinkin' a that?" Rogue said and sat on her bed. Kitty was only a little disoriented, and Rogue was glad she didn't accidentally knock her unconscious.
"You mean the time I sort of taught you how to dance," Kitty said and they both laughed.
"Yeah, ah guess ya could say that," Rogue said and put her glove back on. "Ah guess we should be gettin' up anyway."
After taking a shower and dressing for the day, Rogue decided to skip breakfast and get in a workout before her and Kitty's session with the professor. Even though she had gotten her powers back, she had no idea if it was permanent or something more bizarre would happen.
All she could do was take one day at a time, or likely take everything in minute by minute, but it seemed something had changed. There wasn't anyone at the mansion or even any other mutants she had known that had a power similar to hers. It always made her feel isolated, but Kitty now had a feeling of what it was like to be her, and even though she wouldn't have wished this power on anyone she finally had a friend who could understand what it was like.
She punched the bag for a while until she was interrupted by a familiar scent. She was on her guard and picked up the fighting staff that had been resting on the bench and blocked the oncoming attack by a trio of claws.
"Logan, what did ya think ya were doin'?" Rogue asked rolling her eyes as he retracted his claws.
"Keepin' you on your toes," he said and Rogue just turned her head not wanting to hear a lecture. "Feared being' out with that Cajun might have dulled your senses."
"Would ya stop dumpin' on Remy!" she shouted while crossing her arms. "He's good ya me, and ah love 'im."
"Don't ya think you're a little too young..."
"No, ah ain't too young. Ah may be only eighteen, but ah know my own feelins," she said and came closer to him. "If I didn't know better ah'd think ya were jealous."
"I'm just lookin' out for you," logan said softly. "Especially with what you an Kitty switching powers means..."
"What? That ah can touch people," he said accusingly. She let out a little laugh while shaking her head. "Ya think we did something', that somthin' happened. Well, it did."
Logan jerked his head towards her with his face flushed. "What did that lowlife do?"
"Calm down, it was only a kiss," she said but a smile came to her face thinking about it. "Anyway, it don't matter now, since my powers came back."
"So you're back to normal?" Logan asked and leaned against the punching bag.
"If ya can call it that," she said with some sadness in her voice. Rogue looked over at the clock. "I gotta session with the professor."
"Then you better get goin'," Logan said just as Rogue picked up her gym bag. As she took a few steps to walk away Logan spoke one last time. "Rogue," he said and she turned back. "You know I was just lookin' out for you."
"Ah know," she said and quickly walked out of the gym.
*****************************************
Rogue quickly made her way to her room and changed clothes and walked down the stairs to the professor's office. As she walked in she saw Kitty sitting in one of the chairs and the professor sitting behind his desk.
"Am I late?" Rogue asked feeling a little embarrassed.
"No, Rogue, Kitty was early, please have a seat," he said and she slowly walked over to the chair next to Kitty. "Now, Kitty didn't want to discuss the situation until you arrived."
"You mean us switching powers?" Rogue asked but she knew that was what he was talking about. "It doesn't matter anymore because we switched back, right Kitty?"
"But why did it happen?" the professor asked leaning towards them with his hands folded on his desk.
"Don't know," Kitty said while shaking her head back and forth. "All I remember is Rogue and me fighting about our powers, and there was some flash out the window and we kind of wished for each other's powers."
"Then the next mornin' it happened," Rogue said and looked up at the clock. It was going on 11:30am and she just hoped that they would be finished with this session."
"This flash," the professor said and the two girls looked at each other. Can you describe what it was?"
"A star, I guess," Kitty said but sounded like she wasn't sure. "Right, Rogue?"
"Yeah, and ah don't know what else it could be," Rogue said and looked to the professor to see if he had an answer.
"I'm not sure," the professor said with his hand on his chin. "It could have been some kind of fluke meteor or a comet. I'll look into the matter but if another incidence comes up please let me know right away."
"Yes, professor," both girls said at the same time.
"You both can go for now," he said and Kitty couldn't get up fast enough.
"Thanks, professor," Kitty said and ran right through the door."
"Show off," Rogue said quietly. Then she looked back over to the professor. "There's somethin' else."
"What's on your mind, Rogue?" he asked and rolled his wheelchair round his desk and stopped in front of her.
"Well, you see I gotta a taste of what it was like to have control... of myself. Do you think it could be possible that...?"
"That you can control your powers?" the professor asked and she nodded. "I have always thought it was possible. I have just been waiting until you were ready."
"Ah am, I want control of my life," she said trying to act confident. "Ah don't wanna be scared anymore."
"Alright, but you need to be committed," he said and she nodded. "I can schedule sessions three days a week, but remember. This is a slow process. If we rush, then it just might set you back. Can you be patient?"
"Ah'll do whatever it takes, and however long it takes."
"Alright, first session is tomorrow," he said and looked in his appointment book. 9am sharp. Don't be late."
"Ah won't, professor," she said as a knock came at the door.
"Come in!" the professor called out. "Good afternoon, Bobby."
"Hey, professor," he said and sounded like he was out of breath. "I was looking for Rogue." She looked over at Iceman a little confused. "There some guy out front looking for you. Better get out there quick before one of the other girls snatch him."
"Very funny, Bobby," Rogue said and headed for the door. "Thanks, Professor."
She walked down the hall until she reached the front door. It was open and she saw a certain card welding Cajun showing some of the other kids a card trick. She noticed some of the younger girls looking starry-eyed as he finished his trick.
"Puttin' on a show?" she asked and he turned towards her. Now he had that starry look in his eye. "Sorry, I'm late."
The younger kids dispersed but a red-haired girl about twelve smiled and gave him a little wave before walking away. "Are you ready to go?" She nodded and then turned to her about to ask another question. "How are your powers?
"They're back," she said with his eyes turned down. She actually looked more let down than he was. "Ah hope you're not disappointed."
"Naw, you t'ink I would break up wid you over dat?" She shook her head back and forth as he said that. "I ain't like Avalanche. Kitty was right for breakin' it off wid him."
"How do you know?" She looked straight into his eyes but hesitated. "Wait... what did you do?" Rogue asked as she put her hands on her hips. Remy tried to look innocent, but she wasn't buying it. "Remy, Spill it. Now!" Her voice was stern, and it looked like Remy was just a little bit scared.
"I jus' dropped by the Brotherhood house last night and had a little talk with Alvers," he said and Rogue just turned her head. "I told him to apologize t'Kitty, and things got a little..."
"Did you beat him up?" Rogue asked turning her head back to see the guilty look on his face.
"Wouldn't call it a beatin'," he said again trying to look innocent. "He got in his licks too."
"The question is, why did ya go over there and start a fight?" Rogue sasked folding her arms over her chest.
"I didn't exactly start a fight, jus ruffled his feather a bit, and after what he did to Kitty he deserved it," he said and Rogue didn't altogether disagree with what he did, not that she would ever admit it. "Den dere's de fact dat he ruined our night as well, so I guess I was bein' a little selfish."
"Maybe a little, and if ya hadn't done it ah would have," Rogue said and Remy didn't look one bit surprised. Rogue would be the first one to admit that she had a temper, and when it came to her friends she would do anything to defend them.
"Great mind's t'ink alike, so ya ain't mad at Remy? Just defending a girl's honor." With that last statement Rogue couldn't help but give a chuckle.
"Ah guess not, but ah should be," she said and he looked shocked. "Anyone else would be."
"But we ain't like ot'er people," he said and took her hands. "An' about your powers. Dat don' matter either."
"Well, it does it a way," she said and he looked intrigued. "Last night ah gotta taste of what it was like to touch again, and ah liked it." Remy's expression turned to a grin. "So ah'll be workin' with the professor to try and control it."
"Knowing you, you'll do it, and I'll be right dare wid you."
He wrapped his arms around her and Rogue heard some ahhs and giggles from some of the other kids, but she didn't care. Right now the world only consisted of the two of them as they walked hand and hand. Whatever the future held, they would face it together.
