a Little Ride to the Park
LAYNES P.O.V.
After my mom about died when she saw the smoke in my room. We took towels to wave the smoke away. Then my phone rang. And the oven that was cooking our dinner beeped. As my mom walked away I answered the phone.
"Hello?"
"Layne?" Kaleb's voice asks.
"Yes, what is it?" I could hear him breathing hard on the phone.
"Are you experiencing the same things I am?" Kaleb asks.
"What? What do you mean?"
"I mean the rings... they have powers."
I quickly close my door.
"You too?!" I ask
"Yeah, it's so cool; I can shoot lightning from my hands."
"What? Wait... should we talk about this on the phone?"
"Why not?"
"Well maybe someone is listening as well."
"Good point, hmmmm... let's see... sixteen, one, hmmmm... eighteen... eleven?"
It took me a while but I finally figured out what he was meaning.
"Ok," I finally say.
"See you tonight."
After I hung up, I went into the living room to eat dinner. Lasagna, my least favorite dinner.
* * *
It was 1:00 AM, when I woke up; when me and Kaleb talk alone, we usually do it at 1:00.
PARK
Was the word he spelled to me on the phone, we made it up a long time ago; in case we didn't want anyone else to know what we were talking about. It had gotten kind of old after we used it so much in the beginning, but now anyone could be listening onto our conversations. I had no idea if someone else was listening on every one's phones or something.
Since my house is only a one story, I took the screen off my window and crawled out, then replacing it behind me.
I was also dressed in a black hoodie, dark Jean pants, and black Nike shoes.
Once I reached my bike I pedaled off to my destination.
I arrived at the park at 1:15am. Then when I thought the coast was clear, I gave off our secret whistle; usually we did it in hide and seek, to tell where we were at.
Whistle, pause, whistle, whistle, and pause.
Then a few seconds later, someone else whistled.
Whistle, pause, whistle, whistle, and pause.
I jumped off my bike; the whistles came from the big playground.
I jumped across the car pole that kept the cars away from entering after curfew. Then I ran until I felt my feet hit the sand, and then until I reached the big playground stairs.
I thank the moon for giving me light in the darkness; if it was dark I would probably hit my head on something.
I found Kaleb, dressed kind of like me, except his shoes were Vans, and he also wore his ring with the lightning bolt engravings.
"Hey," I whisper as I sit crisscrossed in front of him.
"Dude," Kaleb whispered. "Watch this, Astrapes," as he said this, pointing at a leaf below, lightning flew from his fingers and shot right at it.
"Wow!" I look at the leaf which is a dark torn up stem.
"Yeah, I figured out its name."
I thought for a second.
"Lightning in Greek?"
Kaleb nods. "How about yours"
I put my ringed hand out.
"Pyra," Immediately my hand erupted in flames.
"Does... does it sting?" Kaleb looks closer wide eyed.
"No, but it feels... weird."
"Why do you think they have Greek names?"
I shrug my shoulders.
"Maybe who ever put them in that rock was Greek."
"But why would they send them here?"
The flames on my hands go out.
"You don't believe in aliens do you?" I ask
"I never believed in superpowers," He says back flatly.
"Good point."
"But still," Kaleb says quietly. "Why send them here, or send them at all, you can tell how powerful they are."
"Well... as long as they don't come back for them I don't care."
Then there was a crack like a twig broke behind Kaleb.
But then our heads turned when a shuffle noise and then a sound like what ever it was ran off.
I turn around.
"Ill see you later," I try to say, but it came out, "iee, ss, leger " because I was so nervous.
Then Kaleb was right behind me when I ran.
I ran across the sand, and jumped over the car pipe, I get on my bike and peddle home like there's no tomorrow.
