Chapter 38-Voices

Logan had tried extremely hard to fall asleep, but he simply couldn't do it. He'd slept a terrible hour in the car, and had probably the worst day of his life. As he laid down on the floor of Janus' bedroom, the last of the Power Rangers to still be awake, he absently started listing off every terrible thing that had happened to him in the past twenty-four hours. Logan got the shit kicked out of his by a ten-foot tall primordial being, Thomas was kidnapped and either killed or injured so badly he could never be a Power Ranger again, he and Patton had been almost non-stop fighting with each other over the fact that Patton won't even acknowledge what had happened to Thomas and insists on moving on with whatever mission he's given himself-which Logan finds absolutely hypocritical coming from him-and now his ribs ached, and his head hurt, and Logan couldn't fall asleep for the life of him.

Finally Logan had enough of this list bullshit and stood up, creeping his way outside of the bedroom and into the living room. Emile and Remy and the two dogs were cozily sleeping, curled around each other in a pile of fur and blankets. Logan sighed as he stared at them, they didn't deserve this. Especially not Emile. He pulled his attention away however and stepped outside, needing some fresh air.

Of course the Florida night air couldn't really be described as fresh, even in the dead of winter there was still a bit of stuffy-ness that filled Logan's lungs and throat. In a way he'd almost missed it. The Jareaus' porch was just a simple wooden one, painted a grey that complimented the home, and frost nipped at the edges of the rail and posts. Logan wished he was home. Renette had confiscated their phones so they couldn't be tracked or contacted-though she seemed guilty about it-and Logan understood her worry, but he still wanted to hear his sisters' voices. Being told that everything was going to be alright always had a different effect on him when it came from Lauren or Nora or Patton. And since Patton was a little stuck in his self-pity-cycle right now, Logan wasn't going to hear it from him.

Even as Logan thought this however, a twinge of guilt ebbed at his brain. He knew Patton was going through a lot and he knew Patton's reaction to the situation was likely justified, it just stung Logan that Patton was so easily trying to pass the grieving process along as if it was nothing. Logan knew how terribly that could turn out, he'd done it when his grandmother died, and he'd almost done it when Patton was taken by the Dragon Witch. Now, here Patton was doing the exact thing that Logan was explicitly telling him not to do, and he was ignoring all of Logan's advice. And being kind of rude about it.

Logan shook his head to clear his thoughts, he supposed sitting on a porch and pouting was better than sitting in a stuffy room and pouting. Though by how much was up for debate. The door creaked open behind him and Logan didn't turn to see who it was.

"You're terrible at fighting." Patton announced.

Logan turned his head to look at him in annoyance, but was only met with a humorous smile.

"I think I can hold my own pretty well." Logan countered, turning back to look at the yard.

"I don't really mean physical fights." Patton told him. "Fighting me, verbally. You're terrible at it."

"Oh?" Logan asked sarcastically.

"It's true." Patton was standing next to him now, leaning on the railing. "You get this sad, pouty look on your face when we yell at each other. And when you're telling me off you always have to add in that I'm a little right. You always compromise to me, even if it's just a bit. You say something like 'I understand where you're coming from' or 'I get why you might think that' or whatever. It's honestly a bit pitiful."

"Are you trying to make up with me? Cause you're doing a god awful job." Logan grunted.

"I'm just letting you know." Patton said, almost cheekily. "If we're going to be together, I need you to tell me when to shut up, and when I'm being awful, and when I'm just saying absolute bullshit. I won't have a boyfriend that can't tell me to stop being an ass when I'm being an ass."

It was quiet for a beat before Patton sighed and turned around, resting his back on the railing and crossing his arms.

"You've been acting like a bit of a-" Logan stopped himself. "Patton, you've been acting like an ass."

"Go on."

"I'm trying to help you. I'm trying to tell you what I've been through and what it's done to me, and how I can see you putting yourself through the exact thing I did. I tortured myself for months with the way I handled my grandma's death and now that I see you doing the same, I'm worried." Logan continued. "I just don't want you to hurt yourself more than you're already hurting. You don't deserve that. And the fact that you won't even listen to me makes me really frustrated. Also you treated me like I was a terrible person and said that I was trying to control you when you know I wasn't."

Patton looked down at Logan, and smiled.

"And-and I think you're a gigantic hypocrite. You're constantly telling other people they don't need to prove themselves, or they shouldn't down play their accomplishments, and you're always trying to make other people feel better and proud of themselves. But you can't tell yourself that?"

"You heard what I told Virgil in the car?" Patton said more than asked.

"We all did." Logan said quietly.

Patton was quiet. He was looking down at his feet, and tapping his fingers against his hands. Logan watched the rhythmic tapping against Patton's skin, waiting for him to say something, but he didn't.

"I shouldn't have said that last part." Logan decided to tell Patton. "I'm sorry. That was unfair. It-it's hard to talk positively to yourself and-and I don't go through what you do so I really don't have an idea of what it's like in your head-"

"Shut up." Patton ordered. "You were doing so well darling, don't go back now."

"But Pat, I-I don't have depression or-or really know what goes on in your head and honestly I don't have a right to talk about how you need to be talking about yourself an-"

"You're right. Lo, you don't have depression, and you can't read my mind to know what I'm saying to myself at any given moment." Patton stopped him. "But the thing is, I know that. I know that you don't know what I go through, and I know that you trust me to stop you, when you're talking some bullshit. Believe me Logan, if you ever start mansplaining my own mental health to me, I'll let you know. And your other points are all correct by the way. I am a hypocrite in that sense, and I was being a bitch to you earlier. I didn't want to hear what you had to say because I felt like you were trying to tell me how I should be reacting. Really, what you were trying to do was help me through this. And, while you did have a bit of a tone, I could have listened to what you were trying to tell me."

"Pat-" Logan tried.

"But," Patton pushed himself off the rail and sat down beside Logan. "I'm gonna need you to stop doing that. That whole apologetic arguing thing that you do. It's like you have no confidence in yourself. When I'm being ridiculous I need to trust you to tell me that I'm being ridiculous. You trust me to tell you so, and I need the same. But I also don't want you to stop doing that just for me, but for yourself too. You deserve better."

"Okay." Logan nodded. "I'll work on that."

"Good."

"Can you work on telling yourself that you're not useless? If not for you, then for me. If you can tell me you don't want a boyfriend that can't argue, then I can tell you I don't want a boyfriend who tells himself he's useless and broken." Logan insisted.

Patton gave a sad laugh and leaned over, laying his head in Logan's lap.

"I'll do my best love." Patton murmured sleepily.

"Are we all made up now?"

"Kiss me?"

Logan did, he leaned down and sweeped Patton's hair aside, kissing him sweetly and softly. Patton smiled into the kiss and wrapped his arms around Logan's neck. It was a little awkward, but Logan didn't pay that any attention. He pulled away for a breath and opened his eyes to see Patton's swept away, dewy eyes.

"We're good." Patton assured him.

"I knew it." A scratchy voice behind the two snickered.

Patton sat up fast and bumped his forehead against Logan's causing both to groan in pain. Logan rubbed at his head as he turned to see Virgil standing in the doorway. They walked over to the two and sat down.

"How long have you two been dating?" They asked, almost bored.

"End of November." Patton answered, and hissed in pain.

"Huh." Virgil pulled out their phone and started scrolling. "Yep. I was right."

"About?" Logan asked.

"Day of Roman's play, he texted us about you two. He said Pat had a crush on you and I was really confused cause ya know, I thought you two were already dating." Virgil smirked. "I was right."

"Yeah, uh, you were." Patton flushed red.

"Why didn't you guys tell us?" Virgil asked honestly.

"There wasn't really a good time." Logan told them.

"And more important things were going on."

"Oh please." Virgil rolled their eyes. "Sure that might be true, but you would have at least told Roman, who can't keep a secret from Remus, who would have told all of his Tumblr followers. So why didn't you tell us?"

"We wanted to see how long it would take for you guys to figure it out." Patton shrugged. "It was my idea."

"And it was a bit of revenge on Roman for making fun of me for the past three years."

"Ha." Virgil snorted. "Nice. So then am I the first?"

"Yeah." Logan sighed.

"You gonna tell anyone?" Patton asked.

"Nah." Virgil shrugged. "Not my place. That's your guys' problem."

Logan narrowed his eyes at Virgil, but silently agreed and shared a look with Patton. Virgil blew some hair out of their face and scooched forward so they were sitting side-by-side with him, and laid their head on Logan's shoulder. Patton apparently took this to mean 'Logan is free cuddling real estate' and sat in Logan's lap and played with his hair.

"Renette showed me the official papers last night." Virgil said absently.

"What papers?" Patton asked.

"The adoption papers." Virgil explained. "She was crying. I-I didn't want her to see me cry cause other people cry when I cry."

"Virge." Patton gasped.

"Virgil I'm so sorry." Logan whispered.

"It's ironic right? That's the right use of that word? I mean, I finally have a real, stable parent who's there for me, and actually wants me to be their kid, and then, the moment I'm actually his child, he gets taken away from me." Virgil laughed sadly.

"Virgil I-I don't know what to say." Patton said.

"We're both legacies." Virgil told Patton. "I mean, he was only my dad for a little over a month, but he's still my dad. And now, I-I have this."

"I guess you're right." Patton was starting to cry, but he held a smile on his lips. "We are both legacies."

"We're the same." Virgil's tone changed. "So stop saying you're a useless member of this team because I'm not letting anyone on my team think that way about themselves."

Patton laughed and Logan smiled, he didn't mind his watering eyes, all of them were either crying or on the brink of it.

"I promise." Patton assured them.

"Good." Virgil nodded curtly. "I love you."

"Love you too Virgey." Patton buried his face in the junction between Logan's neck and shoulder.

"I love you Lo."

"I love you Virgil."

The three watched the sun rise. It probably wasn't the best idea. They all desperately needed sleep, but it felt nice. A bit of peace before the chaos would come.

Janus' mother Kennedy found them on the porch and asked them what morning hot drink all of them subscribed too. When the three were back inside hot chocolate, tea, and coffee were handed to Virgil, Logan, and Patton respectively. Emile and Remy were awake as well, though they were still not paying attention to anyone but each other, Kennedy, Eloise, and Renette any mind. Patton and Virgil were affected by this most, but both had silently agreed to give Emile some time, let him deal with this the way he had to. If and when he needed the two, Emile would go to them. Logan sat at the kitchen bar and watched Eloise make breakfast, the sound of morning cartoons coming from the living room tv. Occasionally Virgil or Patton or both would laugh. Uncoordinated stomping and little pitter patters told Logan that both the dogs were up and playing with the fourteen year olds. At one point Roman came into the kitchen and said a groggy good morning. He sat beside Logan and was offered a hot drink like the rest of them. At one point Virgil walked into the kitchen to put their cup in the sink, walk behind Roman, place their giant over-ear headphones on top of Roman's head, and walk out. Roman moved the headphones over his ears and started tapping to some song's beat on the counter top.

"Breakfast is ready." Kennedy announced.

Eloise turned around and proudly produced large plates of eggs, hash browns, tortillas, and fruits. Logan smiled at her and signed a quick 'thank you' by bringing his fingers up to his chin and then pulling them down. She smiled back and turned around to get plates around.

"Logan, can you go get Remus and Janus?" Kennedy asked.

"Of course." Logan nodded and got up from his seat, heading off.

He made his way down the hall to Janus' room where the two had remained. When he got there, the door was open just a bit, and Logan could hear them talking, the two were still on the bed and Remus was doing something with Janus' wrist.

"-hy didn't you say anything?" Remus asked, a little angrily.

"Would you have?" Janus asked sarcastically.

Remus huffed and shook his head. "I know they're going through a lot right now, but driving for ten hours with a messed up wrist isn't a good idea dum dum."

"Hey ow!" Janus groaned. "That hurt me and you know it. Besides, they're not the only ones going through shit right now. Thomas meant a lot to us too. I mean damn he was like the only staff member at our school who I would trust with anything."

"Thomas is still alive." Remus stated. "Don't talk about him like that. With the 'meant's and 'was's."

"Right." Janus said, a little quieter. "You know what we should do 'Mus?"

"Hmm?" Remus asked, still paying more attention to wrapping Janus' hand and wrist.

"Get married."

Remus stopped. "What?"

"We should get married."

"Are you high?"

"Nope." Janus said adding a little pop to the 'p'.

"Are you pregnant?!" Remus asked incredulously.

"No! Who's the dum dum now?"

"You!! You want to get married!" Remus countered.

"Yeah I do."

"Why?!"

"I mean, I love you." Janus stated. "We're both eighteen, we're both pretty stupid, and honestly, if I'm gonna go into space to fight a ten foot tall facist, I want to be married to you."

"Janus," Remus sighed. "You don't want to marry me."

"Yes I do!" Janus countered. "I absolutely 100% want to marry you! Don't tell me what I want you bastard! I'm gonna marry you! Look we don't have to get married today, I'm down with marrying you whenever! I-I don't care if fucking Roman plans us the biggest gayest wedding in history or if it's literally the two of us and an internet officiant behind the McDonald's where you used to sell weed. Okay?! I want to marry you."

It was quiet. Logan had honestly never wanted to leave yet wanted to stay more than at that moment.

"God I love you." Remus cried. "Let's get freakin' married."

"Really?!"

"Really!!"

Janus practically squealed and wrapped his arms around Remus' neck.

"You really mean that? You really want to marry me?!"

"Of course I do! You beautiful, sexy," Remus emphasizes every word with a kiss on Janus' face. "amazing, conceited, sneaky, little bitch! I'm gonna marry the shit out of you."

Janus laughed joyfully and pulled Remus in for a longer, kinder kiss. When they pulled away Janus rested his forehead against Remus's.

"Why did you say I didn't want to marry you?" He asked.

Remus didn't move away, but he was quiet. "Honeybee, you're so much more than I could ever ask for. I mean how could anyone put up with my gross, kinky ass, let alone someone as beautiful and smart as you."

"Well for one, you say things like that to me. And I know you don't say them to anyone else." Janus explained. "You make me feel special."

"You make me feel loved." Remus kissed Janus once again.

"I'd hope so, what kind of shit husband doesn't make his partner feel loved?" Janus ran his hand through Remus' hair.

"You're not my husband yet."

"Mmm not yet." Janus pointed out.

"And I don't think I can really consider us engaged just yet." Remus said, startling both Janus and Logan. "I mean, I don't typically like tradition, but I do like shiny things so I can make an exception. I want a ring. We're not engaged to be married until I have a ring."

"Oh, I'll get you a goddamn ring." Janus assured him.

Remus laughed and the two embraced once again. Logan felt super uncomfortable at this point and figured now was a better time to step in. He knocked and peeked his head in. The two looked at him, annoyed, but both softened when they knew who it was.

"Breakfast." Logan explained.

"We're on our way!" Janus said.

Logan speed-walked back to the main room and found Patton right away, a tortilla full of food making its way to his mouth.

"Did you get lost? You were gone forever." Patton said, stuffing the breakfast burrito in his mouth.

"Holy shit do I have to talk to you." Logan plopped down on the couch and sat cross-legged.

"Mm-wha? Whas up?" Patton widened his eyes and looked at him expectantly.

Before Logan could get started Roman had joined the two and set a plate of food in Logan's lap. Logan gave Patton a look of 'tell you later' and started eating. Virgil joined them as well, and soon Janus and Remus had taken their places.

"Everyone." Renette walked in front of the Rangers, she had a stern look on her face, but the effect was minimized by the cat pajamas she was wearing and plate of food she was holding. "Emile has something he'd like to say."

Everyone simultaneously put their food down. Emile walked in front of them and Renette moved to sit at the table with Kennedy and Eloise. Remy took a seat at the end of the couch by Patton, both dogs following him, though they were far more interested in the food.

Emile sucked in a breath and let it out before finally looking everyone in the eyes. "I'm genderqueer. I prefer the pronouns they/them and xe/xir. I really didn't want to come out because I'm still trying to figure things out for myself, but while we were in New York, Sara outed me to the school."

It was deathly quiet. The rage in everyone very quickly building.

"I-I wanted to tell you guys before you found out from someone else. And honestly I've been trying to deal with it on my own, because I didn't want to bother anyone with it while you guys were on vacation and stuff b-but now I've got that and my da-ad being gone too and it's all so overwhelming." Emile wiped away some tears that had spilled over. "But I just wanted to say that I'm really pissed off. Because you wouldn't let me help. I-I don't know if I could have really done anything in New York to-to help my dad, but-but I'm sick of being treated like I can't do anything. I don't have any control in my life anymore and it's making me very insecure about myself and my relationships with my friends." They sucked in another shaky breath. "I want to be helpful, I want to do something to get my dad back, whatever that is, and if one of you tells me that it's too dangerous or that I can't I will fu-fucking lose it! Because I can help. Please let me help."

Emile dropped to xir knees and sobbed. No one wanted time in gathering around Emile to hug and reassure xem. Patton was crying at this point and holding Emile close, telling them that they didn't deserve any of this. Remus and Janus seemed more concerned with assuring Emile that Sara wouldn't get out of this without facing any consequences, Roman was telling Emile that he would help him train and learn and they'd figure out a way to get Emile fight-ready and Logan offered Emile some reassuring words that xe would be alright and that they were safe. Virgil had gone behind Emile and wrapped their arms around Emile's torso, their head leaning on Emile's back. Logan guessed this was something the two had figured out between each other because Emile was affected by Virgil's actions the most.

By the time they'd separated everyone's breakfast was cold. No one cared.

Renette stepped in front of the group once more, gladly not asking Emile or Remy to leave the room like she'd had to before, and started explaining what needed to be done. Roman, Janus, and Remus would work together to try and get the twins to summon their zords, and Patton and Logan would work with Virgil to figure out what exactly their two morphers did. Renette would work with Emile and Remy on how the two could help the team as much as possible, and everyone would listen to Kennedy and Eloise explain the boundaries of their home and land.

After the talk Renette ordered them all to finish their food and said they would each get to use her phone to call loved-ones about their condition.

Patton was the first to finish, and thus first with the phone. He gave Logan a sweet look as he passed him before getting the phone from Renette and walking to another room.

"Do you wanna all mom and dad?" Roman asked his brother.

"I'd rather hide a dead body in the rafters." Remus told him.

"Fair."

"You do it." Remus said.

"What?! No!" Roman shook his head. "Uh-uh you owe me. You do it."

"I owe you for what?"

"I got you juice!" Roman pointed at the glass that he had in fact brought his twin.

"Ugh!!" Remus groaned. "Fine! I'll call them."

Logan turned away from the two, rolling his eyes. He was just waiting for his turn with the phone so he could talk to his sisters again. Logan's attention was pulled away from the cartoon in front of him however when Virgil made a pained noise.

"Are you alright?" Logan asked.

Virgil rubbed at their sides and nodded.

"Just hurts a little." Virgil said.

Logan made an understanding noise. "What are your pronouns today?"

"He/she." Virgil smiled.

"We really gotta get you some pins." Logan joked.

"I'd like that." Virgil said. "Emile can get matching ones."

"Emile can what now?" The younger kid asked, turning around to face the two.

"Get pronouns pins like Virgil." Logan explained.

"That sounds kinda nice." Emile said.

"Put it on my moms' shopping list." Janus told the three, attention still on the tv.

"Logan!" Renette called from the hallway, she held the phone in her hand and waved it at him. "You're up!"

Logan got up, Patton giving him a comforting squeeze on his forearm as he passed. Renette gave him the phone and smiled. Logan dialed Lauren's number first. A happy spark ricocheting through his body when he heard her and Nora's voices.
