Keep Driving (.7)
"I swear the cap is glued on!" Tessa huffed as she tried opening the bottle.
"Let me have another go," Marty said.
"MARTY!" The unmistakable voice of George called out.
Tessa and Marty turned to see George running towards them with a wild-eyed look. Almost got himself hit by some kids on scooters in the process.
"George! You weren't at school. Where've you been all day?" Marty asked.
"I just woke up. I overslept." George told him. "Look, you've gotta help me! I want to ask Lorraine out, but I don't know how to do it."
"All right, keep your pants on. She's over there in the café," Marty told him as he continued struggling to open the soda bottle. "God, how you do-"
George reached over and grabbed the bottle from Marty. He flicked the cap off against a bit of metal on the full stop.
Marty and Tessa stopped for a second, silently disappointed in themselves. They then followed after George.
"What made you change your mind, George?" Tessa asked. Curious about what exactly Marty had said to him while in disguise.
"Last night, Darth Vader came down from the planet Vulcan and told me that if I didn't take Lorraine out, he'd melt my brain!" George told her. Causing Tessa to turn to Marty with a surprised smile on her face.
"Yeah, well," Marty quickly tried to move the conversation along. "Let's just keep this brain-melting stuff to ourselves, okay?"
"Oh yeah, yeah," George agreed.
"All right, okay," Marty said. Somewhat relieved. He continued walking George over to the cafe window. "There she is, George."
"Just go right in and ask her," Tessa tried to say in a confident tone.
"Okay, but I don't know what to say," George told them.
"Just say anything, George," Marty told him. "Say whatever's natural, the first thing that comes into your mind."
George stood there a second. Looking like he was trying hard to come up with something... anything. "Nothing's coming to my mind!"
"Jesus, George," Marty muttered. "It's a wonder I was even born."
"What?" George asked in a panic. Not quite hearing what Marty said.
"It's nothing," Tessa covered.
"Look, tell her destiny brought you together," Marty said as Tessa looked through the cafe window again. "Tell her that she is the most beautiful girl you've ever seen in the world. Girls like that stuff... What are you doing, George?"
"I'm writing this down," George told him as he scribbled on a notepad. "This is good stuff."
Tessa let out a huff of frustration. She moved towards George and messed with his hair for a moment. "Okay, George, you're just going to go in there, tell Lorraine she's nice and that you like her a lot, then ask if she would go to the dance with you."
George nodded as Marty and Tessa pushed him inside the cafe. Only to have to give him another push when he just stood in the doorway.
The two teens moved over to the counter to watch.
"... Darth Vader?" Tessa asked Marty with a hit of mischief.
"Okay, that's... I was under some pressure at the time." Marty defended himself.
"LOU! Give me a milk!" George shouted proudly. "Chocolate!"
"Oh god," Tessa sighed. Feeling the second-hand embarrassment from Marty.
"Can you hear what they're saying?" Marty asked as he stretched his neck.
Tessa couldn't hear a lot, but she did catch George telling Lorraine that he was her 'density'. "I don't think it's going well."
The two of them tried to get closer. Only to cringe at George's attempts to read the script he had written for himself.
"Haven't I seen you somewhere?" Lorraine asked.
"Yes! I'm George. George McFly. I'm your density, I mean un, destiny,"
Just when Tessa thought it couldn't get any worse, a familiar face walked in and started yelling. "McFly, I thought I told you never to come in here!"
George turns around and shakes in fear at the sight of the large teen. Marty, meanwhile, shook his head in annoyance.
"I thought I told you to never come in here," Biff kept shouting. "Well, it's gonna cost you. How much money you got on you?"
Biff started making his way over to him with a smile.
"Well, how much do you want, Biff?" George asked in shame.
As Biff got closer, Marty stuck on his leg. Causing Biff to trip and fall to the floor. Everyone around them let out a laugh. Tessa was tempted to join them but stopped when Biff stood back up. Towering over her and Marty.
Tessa clutched Marty's arm. Not liking the look Biff was giving him. "All right, punk-"
"Whoa, whoa, Biff," Marty stopped him and pointed just behind him. "What's that?"
Biff turned his head. Giving Marty a chance to throw a punch at him. Biff fell back onto a nearby table. Marty then runs out of the cafe. Followed by a concerned Tessa.
"Where's the car?" Marty asked Tessa.
"Still at the auto place," Tessa told him. The two of them had left it there for some cleanup before they had met up with George.
"You go get it while I keep them distracted," Marty told her as he ran off.
"What about-" Tessa tried to call after him but stopped when Biff and his gang stomped over. Tessa let out a panicked shout and ran back to the auto shop. Not noticing the crowd of teens gathering outside the cafe.
Once Tessa finished running to the auto shop, she quickly tried to explain to the mechanic working on the car that she needed it back.
"Come on, lady, I'm not done yet," The mechanic told her as he motioned with a wax cloth.
"I need this car back now!" Tessa insisted. She didn't know why he wanted to finish it so badly. She and Marty had already paid for the job beforehand. It wasn't like she was trying to scam him.
After another minute of arguing, Tessa finally got the keys back and rushed back to the town square.
She watched in horror as Marty was about to be rammed into a nearby truck by Biff's car. "Biff's going gonna kill him!" Tessa internally shouted to herself.
Tessa closed her eyes for a moment. Not want to see the poor guy get smashed. When she opened them again, she saw Marty climbing across Biff's car and safely handing back on the ground. Not expecting Marty's sudden move, Biff's gang looked back at him. Causing them to crash into the truck they were trying to ram Marty into.
Tessa quickly drove over to Marty and looked at him with a mix of surprise and awe.
"Where the hell did you get that?" Tessa pointed to Marty's makeshift skateboard.
Marty let out a laugh and handed the board over to a nearby kid. "Thanks a lot, kid,"
"Has anyone told you you're a madman?" Tessa asked as she opened the door for Marty. The two of them started driving back to Doc's place.
Totally unaware of a conversation taking place nearby.
"Eileen! Calvin's staying at your place, isn't he?" Loraine grabbed her friend's arms excitedly.
"Yeah," Eileen answered. Somewhat bewildered.
"We gotta go!" Loraine started pulling Eileen along. "Come on!"
While Loraine guided Eileen away, George was left standing by himself. Once again, having no idea what to say.
"I'll keep them distracted," Tessa quoted. "I can't believe you did that."
"Hey, it worked, didn't it?" Marty smiled smugly.
"Yeah, but that doesn't change that it was badshit insane!" Tessa laughed. "And just you're just as much as a madman on the road."
"What!?" Marty laughed in offence. "I'm a great driver!"
"One hundred percent of drives we've had have resulted in a crash!" Tessa smirked.
"That shouldn't count!" Marty argued. "It was a stressful situation and that barn, literally, appeared out of nowhere."
"Whatever you say, Tiger," Tessa waved. "But I'll be the one in the driver's seat for a while till you earn back that right."
"Do you even have a licence?" Marty laughed.
"Technically speaking... I know how to drive."
"Oh my god," Marty shook his head.
The two of them made their way into the garage. Hearing a familiar tape coming from the back. "Just back away while he's distracted." They made their way over to Doc. Who seemed to be rewinding the tape over and over again.
"Doc?" Marty said. Wordlessly asking what he was doing.
"Oh, hi, kids," Doc said as he paused the tape. "I didn't hear you come in. Fascinating device, this video unit."
Tessa and Marty looked at each other. Not quite sure what to say to the scientist. "Listen, Doc, you know there's something we haven't told you about the night we made that tape."
"Please, Marty, don't tell me; no man should know too much about their own destiny," Doc told him as he fiddled with the Delorean for a moment.
"You don't understand," Marty tried to continue.
"I do understand. If I know too much about my own future, I could endanger my own existence," Doc stated just as you endangered yours."
"But we just need to tell you one tiny thing," Tessa stressed. Only for Doc to give a stern 'my word is final' look.
Doc cringed at the sad puppy dog looks and Marty and Tessa's faces. He moved them across the room to try and distract them from it. "Let me show you my plan for sending you home. Please excuse the crudity of this model."
Doc motioned to a small white model of the Hill Valley town square. Compete with most of the buildings around it, including the movie theatre and courthouse.
"I didn't have time to build it to scale or to paint it." Doc justified.
The two teens stared at the model in awe for a moment. Impressed that Doc could make something like it in such a short amount of time.
"It's good," Marty patted Doc on the shoulder.
"Very nice," Tessa nodded along.
"Oh, thank you, thank you," Doc smiled. "Okay now, we run some industrial strength electrical cable from the top of the clocktower down to spreading it over the street between two lamp posts."
Doc pointed to a small cable nailed to the top of the courthouse. Then, motioned down to the two sticks that represented the lamps.
"Meanwhile, we out-fitted the vehicle with this big pole and hook which runs directly into the flux-capacitor," Doc showed them a sizeable makeshift pole made of various pieces of metal, wires and a j hook. "At the calculated moment, you start off from down the street driving toward the cable execrating to eighty-eight miles per hour."
"According to the flyer, at 10:04 pm, lightning will strike the clocktower sending one point twenty-one gigawatts into the flux-capacitor, sending the two of you back to 1985." Doc finished. With a proud tone of voice.
Alright now, watch this." Doc passed a toy car over to Marty. "You wind up the car and release it; I'll simulate the lightning."
Marty passed the car to Tessa. Who accepted with a smile and started winding it up.
Doc plugged in a nearby car battery and grabbed some jumper cables. "Ready?"
Tessa nodded.
"Set," Tessa held the car in place on the table.
"Release!" Doc shouted. Tessa sent the car zooming down the model while Doc snapped the jumper to the nail.
As they probably should have expected, the toy car was lit on fire by the shock. Causing all three of them to jump back.
The car kept driving off the table and into a bin of dirty rags. Making Doc gasp in absolute terror.
"You instilling me with a lot of confidence, Doc," Marty joked as Doc put out the fire.
"Don't worry," Doc told him. "I'll take care of ideas. You two just take care of Marty's pop."
"That's easier said than done," Tessa sighed.
"What happened today? He didn't ask her out?" Doc asked.
"I mean... ughhhhh," Tessa made a shaky motion with her hand.
"What did she say?"
Tessa started to answer but stopped when there was a knock at the door. Doc peeked out the window to check who it was.
"It's your mothers!" Doc panicked. "Quick, let's cover the time machine!"
"Wait, mothers!?" Tessa peaked through the window while Marty and Doc covered the time machine. To her surprise, Loraine and Eileen were waiting outside.
"What do we do?" Marty asked.
"How should I know?" Tessa stated.
"Just answer the door," Doc told her.
Tessa slowly opened the door for the two other girls.
Eileen gave anyone a hello and pushed Loraine (who seemed to have gone frozen) towards Marty.
"Hi, Mar, Cal... Marty," Lorraine stuttered.
"Uh, Loraine. How did you know I was here?" Marty nervously asked.
"Well, Eileen, I-"
"Loraine wanted to ask you something," Eileen encouraged.
Tessa and Doc watched on in concern. Both of them add a sick feeling that this conversation wasn't going to go well.
"Marty, this may seem a little forward, but I was wondering if you would ask me to the Enchantment Under The Sea Dance on Saturday," Loraine stuttered.
Marty stared at her with a horrified wide-eyed look. "Uh, you mean nobody's asked you?"
"No, not yet," Loraine told him.
"What about George?" Marty insisted.
"George McFly? Oh, he's kinda cute and all, but, well, I think a man should be strong, so he could stand up for himself, and protect the woman he loves," Lorraine tilted her head. "Don't you?"
"Um,"
...
.....
"I can't believe you said yes," Tessa shook her head.
"I panicked, alright!" Marty shouted. "I didn't want to make my mom cry!"
"So you decided to go on a date with her?" Tessa raised an eyebrow at him.
"I agree with Tessa," Doc frowned. "It's a tad strange."
"I don't want to go on a date with her!" Marty stressed as he pulled at his hair.
Tessa clapped her hands together. "Okay, okay, we can salvage this."
"How?" Marty asked hopefully.
"Follow me," Tessa grabbed Marty's hand and dragged him outside. "We'll be back in a few hours, Uncle Em."
Tessa started walking down the road. Followed by Marty, who was still panicking about the situation he found himself in. "I should have come up with an excuse. Why didn't I come up with an excuse!?"
"What kind of excuse?"
"I dunno, that I was taking someone else?"
"I hate to be the one to tell you this, Marty, but you don't strike me as a terrific liar."
"I can lie," Marty defended.
"Okay, who are you taking then?"
Marty tripped over his own feet. "I could tell her I was taking you?"
"Really now?"
"All I'm saying is I wouldn't have minded being your boyfriend," Marty said casually. Causing Tessa's face to go red.
"But like, only if you were okay with it and-" Marty stopped when he realised he was digging himself deeper.
Tessa cleared her throat. "Let's just focus. I think we can make this work in our favour," Tessa smiled.
"What about George?"
"We're gotta help him build his confidence," Tessa explained.
Sorry for the late posting. I've been feeling anxious lately and have been busy getting ready for Artfight next month.
