How Soon Is Now? (.5)
The run to Kennedy Drive was exhausting. The two teens stopped in front of the mailbox to look around. They were both a bit surprised to see the large house a few meters away from Doc's makeshift lab in the garage. They both knew about the old house. It had burned down six years before either of them were born, and it was wild seeing it in person.
They made their way to the front door, where Tessa could catch her breath while Marty knocked on the door. When Marty turned to look around. The door opened, only to immediately close after a second or two.
Marty moved to knock again, only to have it open again before Marty even touched it. A set of wild eyes blinked at them.
"Doc!" Marty shouted.
The older man seemed to be wearing some kind of weird headgear, like something out of a sci-fi movie.
"Don't say a word!" He said while pulling Marty into the house and closing the door behind him.
Tessa stood there for a second. Processing what just happened before pulling the door open and following them in. She followed them over to a generator, where a small scruffy-looking dog was sitting.
"I don't wanna know your name. I want to know nothing about you." Doc said while taking off a small helmet that was strapped to the dog's head.
"Listen, Doc-" Marty tried to say.
"Quiet! Don't tell me anything!" Doc reminded him.
"You got to help-" Tessa stepped in.
"Quiet. I'm going to read your thoughts." Doc placed a suction cup on Marty's forehead. "Let's see now. You come here from a great distance?"
"Yeah. Exactly!" Marty shouted.
"Don't tell me! You want me to subscribe to the 'Saturday Evening Post'?"
"No," Marty said. Sounding a little defeated.
"Not a word. Not a word. Not a word now! Quiet... Donations. You want me to make a donation... to the Coast Guard Youth Auxiliary?"
"Doc.. We're from the future." Marty said, pulling the plug off his head.
"We came here in a time machine that you invented." Tessa continued. "We need your help to get back to the year 1985."
Doc stared at Tessa for a second. "Have we met before?" He asked. Leaning in to get a closer look at her.
"Were you listening to a word I just said?!" Tessa yelled.
The Doc seemed to shrug off her comment turning back to Marty. "Do you know what this means?" Doc asked Marty as he clapped in hands onto Marty's shoulders. Marty just stared at him hopefully.
"It means that this damn thing doesn't work at all!" Doc ripped off the silver-coloured helmet off his head.
Marty anxiously rubbed his face. "Doc, you gotta help us. You are the only one who knows how your time machine works!"
"Time machine?" Doc stared off into the distance as he fiddled with the bandage on his head. "I haven't invented any time machine."
"Yeah, but you will. Eventually." Tessa stated. Only to get another doubtful look.
"Okay. I'll prove it to you," Marty said as he pulled out his wallet. "Look at my driver's license. Expires 1987. Look at my birthday. I haven't even been born yet. And look at this picture. It's my brother, my sister and me. Look at her sweatshirt, Doc. 'Class of 1984'?"
"Pretty mediocre photographic fakery. They cut off your brother's hair." Doc mumbled. Taking the photo with a pair of pinchers.
"We're telling the truth. Please, you have to believe us." Tessa begged.
"Then tell me, future kids..." Doc smiled. "Who was president of the United States in 1985?"
"Ronald Reagan," Marty answered.
"Ronald Reagan? The actor?" Doc laughed. "Then who's vice president? Jerry Lewis?" Doc grabbed some blueprints and started running out of the house. Tessa and Marty chased after him.
"I suppose Jane Wyman is the First Lady!" Doc yelled as he stumbled down the hill.
"Wait, Doc!" Marty shouted.
"And Jack Benny is treasury secretary!"
"Would you just stop for a second?!" Tessa said.
"I've had enough jokes for one evening. Good night, future kids!" Doc said as he entered the garbage and slammed the door behind him.
"Emmett! Wait! The bruise on your head. I know how that happened. My mom- your sister told me. You were standing on your toilet hanging a clock... and you fell and hit your head on the sink. She came home to find you lying on the floor bleeding from the head... And you told us that it was when you got the idea for the flux capacitor, which... is what makes time travel possible."
Tessa and Marty both slumped against the garage door. Finally, feeling their exhaustion catching up to them. But, lucky for them, Tessa's words seemed to get through to her uncle. The man opened the door with wide eyes.
The next hour was spent getting the DeLorean back to the lab. Marty and Tessa set up the TV to show Marty's video of Doc telling them about the machine. Hoping the younger version could provide the answer to how they get home.
"Okay, Doc, this is it," Marty said as the three of them gathered around the TV.
"Never mind that. Never mind that now." The voice of the older Doc said as he rushed around the parking lot.
"Why, that's me!" Doc said in amazement. "Look at me! Thank God I've still got my hair! Baldness runs in my family, you know."
"Oh, that's comforting," Tessa said. Fiddling with her hair.
"And what on earth's this thing I'm wearing?" Doc asked. Referring to the suit older Doc was wearing.
"Th- this is a radiation suit," Marty answered as he leaned up to reverse the footage on the camera.
"Radiation suit? Of course. Because of all the fallout from the atomic wars."
Tessa tilted her head to the side. "That's... one way of looking at it."
"This... is truly amazing." Doc looked over the video camera curiously. "A portable television studio. No wonder your president has to be an actor. He's got to look good on television."
"Oh, so many jokes, so little time" Tessa sighed.
Doc moved to ask Tessa another question but was spotted when Marty reached the part of the video he wanted Doc to see. "This is it. This is the part comin' up, Doc."
The older Doc's voice started up again. "No, no no, this suckers electrical, but I need a nuclear reaction to generate the 1.21 gigawatts-"
"What did I just say?!" Doc asked.
"Something about a gigawatt?" Tessa said, unsure.
"Hold on," Marty reversed the footage again.
"-this suckers electrical, but I need a nuclear reaction to generate the 1.21 gigawatts of electricity-"
"1.21 gigawatts!" Doc shouted. Placed a hand on his head in disbelief. "1.21 gigawatts. Great Scott!"
Doc suddenly ran out of the garage without with word. Causing Marty and Tessa to once again look at each other in confusion before running after the old man."
"What- What the hell's a gigawatt!?" Marty yelled as he followed after Doc.
"How the hell should I know!?" Tessa shouted back.
The two teens chased Doc back up to the house. Finding him in the living room. Anxiously talking to a picture of Thomas Edison.
"How could I have been so careless? 1.21 gigawatts!" Tom, how am I gonna generate that kind of power? It can't be done, can it?"
"Doc, look. All we need is a little plutonium." Marty said as if it were the most straightforward solution in the world.
"Oh yeah, why don't we ask our friends over at the nearest government facility if they can spare a cup." Tessa frowned.
"What do you mean?" Marty pouted.
"Plutonium isn't exactly easy to come by, Marty." Tessa leaned in to whisper to Marty.
"Kids, I'm sorry, but I'm afraid you're stuck here," Doc said. Placing a hand on each of their shoulders.
"Wait, no, no, I can't stay here!" Tessa shouted as Doc moved to an armchair.
"We've got lives in 1985!" Marty added on.
"Tessa, I'm sorry, but the only power source capable of generating 1.21 gigawatts of electricity is a bolt of lightning," Doc said sadly.
"I've got my mom I've gotta take care of, and there are things I wanna be able to-" Tessa stopped her own rant as she realised something.
"Marty, the paper!"
"What?"
"The paper from this morning," Tessa started reaching into Marty's jacket. "Have you still got it?"
"Yeah, yeah, it's right here." Marty passed the folded blue paper to Tessa.
Tessa turned back to Doc and held the paper in front of him. "How about this?"
Doc grabbed it and started scanning it. His eyes widened in realisation. "This is it!"
Tessa smiled. Feeling some hope returning to the situation.
"This is the answer," Doc said with a manic look. "It says here that a bolt of lightning is gonna strike the clock tower at 10:04 pm next Saturday night!"
Doc placed around the room a bit more while thinking out loud. "If we could somehow harness this lightning, channel it into the flux capacitor."
Tessa and Marty both stared up at Doc with hopeful looks in their eyes.
"- it just might work." Doc's manic smile grew bigger. "Next Saturday night, we're sending you back to the future!"
"Emmett!" A voice rang from the second floor. Causing Doc to let out a surprised squeal. "What's going on down there?"
"It's nothing, Eileen! Just talking to myself again!" Doc shouted upstairs.
Everything was quiet for a moment before the sound of footsteps started coming from the stairs. Doc quickly hustled Tessa and Marty out of the room. Encourage them to hide. The two of them ran into the kitchen but peeked through a gap in the door.
A young girl who looked to be a little older than Tessa and Marty walked into the living room. Carrying the small terrier dog from before in her arms. Her dark brown hair was in total disarray, and she had bags under her eyes.
"Who is that?" Marty asked.
"That would be my mother," Tessa answered.
"Right, oh right." Marty realised.
"Emmett, it's one in the morning," Eileen said firmly. "You need to sleep sometime."
"Yes, I know." Doc nodded. "I'm sorry. I'll just finish up some things here, then I'll head to bed."
"Were you talking to someone?"
"Uahhhh well, you see," Doc stuttered a bit. "On the phone! It's fine!"
"Are you sure? You're a lot more jittery than usual. And that's saying something."
"It was-" Doc's eyes landed on Marty and Tessa peaking through the door. "Relatives! Relatives of some friends that need somewhere to stay! I was going to tell you about them in the morning."
Eileen didn't seem wholly convinced.
"I didn't want to wake you in the middle of the night," Doc said honestly.
Eileen let out a sigh. "It's okay," The girl let out a yawn. "Let's just talk about it in the morning, okay?"
"Yes. Sure thing."
"Night, Emmett," Eileen said as she turned to go back upstairs.
"Night," Doc said with a wave.
Once Eileen had disappeared up the stairs, Doc rushed into the kitchen.
"Alright, so Saturday's good. We can spend a week in 1955," Marty whispered as he gave Tessa a light pat on the shoulder. "We can hang out, and Doc can show us around."
Doc suddenly grabbed Marty by the shoulders. "Marty, that is completely out of the question. The two of you must not leave this house. You must not see anybody or talk to anybody. Anything you do can have serious repercussions on future events. Do you understand?"
"Ummm, about that," Tessa cringed.
Doc grimaced. "Who have you two interacted with today besides me?"
"I'm- yeah, well," Marty cringed.
"We sorta might have," Tessa stuttered at the same time.
"Bumped into my parents."
"Great Scott." Doc gasped. "Let me see that photograph again of your brother."
Marty passed the picture to Doc, who held it up to the light. "Just as I thought. This proves my theory. Look at your brother."
Tessa looked at the picture and was shocked to see that the older McFly's head seemed to have disappeared.
"It's like it's been erased," Marty said in confusion.
"Erased." Doc pondered. "From existence."
The three of them all stared at each other with terrified looks in their eyes. Each not knowing how to deal with this situation.
