Every Breath You Take (6.)

The trio waited for Eileen to be picked up by her friends the following day. Deciding it would be better to head to the high school a little later.

"Woah! They really cleaned this place up," Marty exclaimed as they approached the school. "Looks brand-new."

"Very funny," Tessa said as she walked past him.

"Now remember, according to my theory, you interfered with your parents' first meeting," Doc explained as he climbed over a bunch of parked bikes. "If they don't meet, they won't fall in love, get married and have kids. That's why your older brother is disappearing from that photograph."

"And if we don't fix it, his sister and eventually Marty will disappear?" Tessa asked.

"Exactly!" Doc confirmed.

"Sounds pretty heavy," Marty joked.

"Weight has nothing to do with it," Doc told him.

They waited in the halls for the current classes to end. Hoping they would find Marty's parents wandering in the sea of students.

"Which one's your pop?" Doc asked as students walked past them.

Marty took a deep breath and pointed to the skinny boy from the day before. "That's him."

The three of them watched as George walked down the hall. Trying to avoid a couple of other boys kicking at his legs. He turned around, revealing a 'kick me' sign taped to his back.

"Maybe you were adopted," Tessa deadpanned as he watched George try and get the boys to back off in vain.

"Okay, real mature, guys," George squeaked.

The boys continued laughing as they walked away. George moved to pick up his books, only for a familiar face to approach him.

"That's Strickland," Marty realised. "Jesus, didn't that guy ever have hair?"

"Shape up, man," Strickland told George as he ripped the sign off his back. "You're a slacker! Do you wanna be a slacker for the rest of your life?"

"This has got to be the weirdest sense of déjà vu I've ever had," Tessa said as she watched Strickland lecture George.

"What did your mother ever see in that kid?" Doc asked.

"I don't know, Doc," Marty shook his head. "I guess she felt sorry for him 'cause her dad hit him with the car... hit him with the car."

"Oh no," Tessa said. Wiping her hand across her face. "You don't think... you know?"

"That's the 'Florence Nightingale effect'. It happens in hospitals when nurses fall in love with their patients." Doc explained to them.

Tessa let out a heavy sigh and patted Marty on the back. "Get to it, Tiger."

Marty gulped and started making his way over to George. Marty reintroduced himself from behind a corner. Walking him over to Lorraine and her friends.

"Lorraine?" Marty said to get her attention.

"Calvin!" Lorraine said as she backed up in surprise.

"I'd like you to meet my good friend, George McFly," Marty pulled George over.

"Hi. It's really a pleasure to meet you," George said. Trying to act suave. Only for Lorraine to walk over to Marty.

"How'd your head?" Lorraine tried reaching over to check for any damage.

"Uh, good. Fine," Marty tried backing away.

"I've been so worried about you ever since you ran off the other night," Lorraine continued. "Are you okay?"

Before Marty could answer, the bell for the next class started to ring.

"Come on," Eileen dragged Lorraine away. "We're tardy!"

"Sorry, I have to go," Lorraine said as she was pulled away.

"Isn't he a dreamboat?" Lorraine sighed dreamily as she passed Doc (who made sure to hide his face) and Tessa.

"She didn't even look at him," Marty groaned as Tessa and Doc made their way back over.

"This is more serious than I thought," Doc said in concern. "Apparently, your mother is amorously infatuated with you instead of your father."

"I was afraid of that," Tessa huffed.

"Afraid of what?" Marty asked. Not quite getting what Tessa and Doc were getting at.

"I'm not going to put this lightly: Marty, your mom has the hots for you."

Marty went pale. "Oh god, this ...this is heavy."

"There's that word again: heavy," Doc pondered. "Why are things so heavy in the future? Is there a problem with the Earth's gravitational pull?"

"Yes," Tessa kidded.

"The only way we're gonna get those to mate is if they are alone together."

"Use different phrasing, but yes," Tessa told him.

"You and Marty have got to get his father and mother to interact in some social-" Doc frowned. Not knowing how to finish the sentence.

"What, you mean like a date?" Marty asked.

"Right!" Doc agreed.

"What kind of date?!" Marty said. "What do kids do in the 50s?"

"They're your parents. You must know them." Doc exclaimed. "What are their common interests? What do they like to do together?"

"Do you know what your parents did on dates?" Tessa said.

Doc thought about it for a moment. "Point taken. Wait!"

Doc ran over to a nearby poster with 'Enchantment Under the Sea' printed on it. "There's a rhythmic ceremonial ritual coming."

"Of course! The Enchantment Under the Sea dance!" Marty yelled. "They're supposed to go to this. That's where they kiss for the first time."

"Okay, okay," Tessa nodded. "Here's the plan: you stick with your dad, and I'll keep an eye on your mom."

"Yes, great! You'll try and warm her up to George a bit, and I'll make sure he has the guts to ask her out!"

"Exactly!" Tessa eagerly grinned.

Doc watched as the two teens continued forming their plan. Hoping this situation would not end horribly for them.

After sending Doc back to the house, Tessa and Marty split up and headed to their respective McFly parent. Tessa started making her way over to the table Lorraine and Eileen were sitting at.

"Umm, hi," The two girls looked up at her. "I'm Carrie. We met the other night."

"Oh! You're Calvin's friend!" Lorraine's eyes lit up.

"Yeah, do you two mind if I sit with you?"

Eileen smiled. "Go ahead."

"So Carrie, you mentioned the other night you and Calvin were staying with relatives?"

"Yeah, with Eileen and her brother,"

"Oh, that's who Emmett was talking with on the phone!" Eileen shouted. "Why didn't you say hello this morning? I could have shown you around school."

"Oh well... we didn't want to bother you. Plus, Calvin and I were really tired. Jet lag, you know."

"What's jet lag?" Eileen asked in confusion.

Tessa stuttered for a moment. Realising that jet lag must not have been a term yet.

"So, you and Calvin?" Lorraine suddenly asked. "Are the two of you dating?"

Tessa panicked and answered immediately. "Me and him? Nah, we're just friends."

Lorraine smiled and nodded her head. Causing Tessa to realise her mistake.

"Shit! I should have said yes?" Tessa thought to herself.

"Hey Lorraine," Tessa tried to smile. "What do you think of George McFly?"

"George?"

"The boy Calvin is sitting with," Tessa pointed across the lunch hall.

"I dunno. I've never really thought of him," Lorraine shrugged. "I've got my eyes on someone, though."

Eileen and Lorraine giggled to each other while Tessa tried to work out what to say next.

She quickly realised that trying to get Lorraine to warm up to George would be harder said than done. Considering all of her experiences with the guy so far had been... less than acceptable. As a result, she had no idea what to say to make George sound appealing.

But Tessa knew Marty's whole existence was on the line. So she dug deep, trying to find something to help Lorraine and George together.

The girls continued chatting about boys for a bit, with Tessa secretly trying to find out what Lorraine liked in a partner.

Things started going south, when a familiar group of older boys started walking towards the chatting girls.

"Ladies," Biff smiled. Causing the girls to advert their eyes.

"What, you're not happy to see us?" The one in leather asked Eileen with a wink.

"Stop it, James," Eileen scolded him. "Don't start being crude again."

James rolled his eyes. He and Biff tried to get the girls to play along with their sick game. Despite their protests.

"Little kiss," Biff asked while reaching for Lorraine's hips. "Come on."

"Come on. Leave," Lorraine told him.

"Back off, man!" Tessa sneered as she got up from her chair.

"What, she wants it," Biff said with a smirk.

"Shut your filthy mouth, "Lorraine turned and slapped Biff across the face. "I'm not that kind of girl!"

"Well, maybe you are, and you just don't know it yet," Biff said. Visibly angrier.

"Get your meat hooks off me," Lorraine hissed.

"She told you to back off, you jerk!" Tessa said as she stood up.

Biff was about to say something else before someone grabbed him by the shoulder. The person in question being Marty.

"You heard her. She said, get your meat hooks... off."

Tessa moved in front of Eileen and Lorraine protectively. Watching in horror as Biff towered over Marty.

"So what's it to you, butthead?" Biff said as he shoved Marty away. "You know, you've been looking for a figh-"

Before Biff could shove him again, Marty pushed back. Only for Biff to grab him by the neck. Both of the teens raised fists in the air. Ready for a fight when Strickland started walking over to them.

Biff nodded nervously to the teacher and loosened his grip on Marty's shirt. "Since you're new here, uh, I'm gonna cut you a break... today."

Marty up at him without saying a word. Tessa stood there with her heart beating like a hummingbird. Hoping that Marty wouldn't get his face smashed in.

"So why don't you make a tree," Biff continued. "And get outta here."

Biff and the rest of his gang left without another word. Leaving everyone sitting in silence for a moment, but eventually, the chatter started up again.

"I thought you were gonna die for a second," Tessa said as she checked Marty's neck for any bruises. Thankfully finding none.

"Nah, I'm fine," Marty shrugged with a reassuring smile.

Tessa smiled back but stopped when she noticed that George was gone. She pointed this out to Marty, who rushed off to go find him.

Tessa turned back to the two other girls. "Are you two okay?"

They both told Tessa they were fine. A little shaken up, but okay.

Despite their insistence that they were fine, the situation was still looming over all three of the girls as they left school that day.

Eileen waved them goodbye at the entrance. She explained that she had to stay behind to help out with something.

"I can't believe those jagoffs!" Tessa shouted in frustration. "What makes them think they can treat you two that way!"

"It's been like this for a while," Lorraine said sadly. "I worry about Eileen sometimes."

Tessa stopped and turned back to Lorraine. "Why's that?"

"She's too forgiving towards that, James," Lorraine explained. "He's always saying how he's sorry, and he'll be better."

"But then he doesn't?" Tessa guessed as he clenched her teeth.

"Yep," Lorraine nodded sadly.

"That sure sounds like him," Tessa muttered angrily.

Least to say, by the time Tessa and Lorraine went their separate ways for the day, Tessa was exhausted. Plagued by thoughts of Eileen and her future with a man who wouldn't stop lying to her for years to come. The worst part was that she couldn't do anything about it.

Hypothetically she could break them up but would put her in the same situation as Marty. A dark part of Tessa contemplated it for a moment. Sacrificing herself for her mother to have a chance at a better life? She shook the thought away. Knowing that was the last thing her mother would want her to do.

Tessa ran all the way back to the house. Trying not to think of her grim plans. Luckily Marty was waiting there with a plan of his own.

"So why are we going to your dad's house in the middle of the night?" Tessa asked from the back seat of the car.

"Well, he told me that nobody on this planet is going to be able to change his mind."

Doc pulled into the McFly's driveway with a concerned look on his face. Clearly, he was just as confused as Tessa.

"Your plan is to make him think you're an alien?" Tessa was still a bit confused about this whole idea.

"Yeah, what could go wrong?" Marty said as he zipped up the radiation suit and hopped out of the car.

"Oh god, just so many things," Tessa exclaimed as she passed Marty a bottle of chloroform.

Tessa and Doc waited patiently as Marty climbed up to the second-story window.

"I suppose Marty does this kind of thing a lot?" Doc asked Tessa to break the silence.

"I honestly don't know," Tessa replied. Trying to keep her voice low. "I've technically known him for years. We go to the same school, but we've never talked up until a few days ago."

"Really?" Doc seemed a bit surprised.

"Yeah?" Tessa shrugged.

"You two seem awfully in sync. I assumed you had been friends for years. Like your mothers".

Tessa leaned back in her seat. "I didn't even know they were friends."

A couple of minutes ticked by without any screaming coming from the house. Which must have meant that things were going according to Marty's plan.

After about three minutes, Marty emerged from the second-story window and jumped back down to the car.

"How'd it go?" Doc asked.

"Great!" Marty said as he looked up at the window once more. "Man, that chloroform really knocked him out."

"Let's just hope he reacts the way you hoped," Tessa said.

Marty crashed into the couch when they got back to the house. Doc left Tessa to her own devices. Giving her and Eileen a quick goodnight. Before Tessa could turn around and find her own place to sleep, Eileen stopped her.

"I... I wanted to thank you and Calvin." Eileen said, sounding weirdly nervous.

"Thank us?" Tessa was a bit confused.

"Well, for taking time to help out with his inventions," Eileen said as she fiddled with her hands. "I've been kinda busy helping organise the school dance and have been doing it less lately."

Tessa blinked at her.

Eileen's face went red. "I'm just helping out with the decorations, the band and stuff like that."

"You never told me that!" Tessa smiled.

"Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't really get the chance to mention it today," Eileen continued fiddling.

"It's just that," Tessa stuttered. "I just didn't think you would be interested in anything like that."

"They needed someone to help out," Eileen laughed. "So I thought, why not? You know?"

"That sounds like you," Tessa said quietly.

"What do you mean?" Eileen raised an eyebrow.

"Sorry, I'm just tired and saying things that don't make sense," Tessa said as she waved her hand nervously.

"Um, 'night!" Eileen called to Tessa as the younger girl ran back down the stairs.

Eileen couldn't help but get a weird feeling from this girl. Something was going on, but she didn't know what.
