Chapter 1: A Vigilant War

(Jessica's point of view)
I woke up to lots of shouting, almost as if.... "Oh no, not again." I groaned, knowing this was the time of year when the keeper of knowledge would choose who was on the light side and who was on the dark. Once a side was chosen, the person was given a power and had to swear allegiance to what side they were assigned to. Of course, this choosing ceremony was only done when a person turned seventeen. I was still sixteen, thank goodness. But my friend, Roree. It's her seventeenth birthday. Tomorrow my group of friends will never see her again here, but probably on the battlefield. "Jessica, come downstairs, you need to be at the ceremony right now." "I'm coming mom!" I yell as I quickly get ready then hurry downstairs. "I'm going to skip breakfast, can't be late mom." I say as I walk outside. My other friends, Sidney, Kalen, and Christina are all outside, waiting. "Okay, now that we're all here, let's go." Sidney said. I could tell she was sad, since after this ceremony we will not see Roree. I noticed the ceremony looked different than last time. The theme always changes, to keep things fresh and new. So I quickly took my seat as I hear the Keeper's voice.
"Now today, we celebrate the power granting of a young, brave girl known as Roree. Now step forward and sit down, this will only take a moment to find out your side." The Keeper said. When Roree sat down, the Keeper took her palm and almost instantly cried out "Dark side!" And a dark swarm surrounded Roree, giving her the power. "There you go darling, you have the power of Yin and Yang. Now you will be teleported." We watch as Roree slowly vanishes into thin air.
I hear sobbing as I turn my head to see Sidney crying. "Are you okay?" I ask. "I'm f-fine." She barley is able to say. Well, another friend gone, lost to the war. Only a few months until they take another, Christina. I won't be able to smile the day after that. In fact I can't smile now, knowing that since I'm the youngest, I will watch all my friends leave. "Guys, I have to go. I really can't stand any of these things that remind me I will lose you all." I said, crying my eyes out while running away to my home. I run upstairs, and fall onto my bed. I than cried myself to sleep.
