Chapter 3

Heyy!! Emma here! It's my turn to write in this journal thingy. So..hi.
We woke up this morning to a very excited Grace. She got up with the sun and made us all a breakfast of scrambled eggs - idk why that matters. I personally think it's creepy that you want to know what we eat. Like, what's to stop us from saying something gross?
Note: Alex was watching me write and told me to say that we ate a bear that we killed with our bare hands and a side of "the blood of our enemies". I have since moved across camp from her.
Anyway. Back to breakfast. So Grace was up and super peppy and she woke me up right after. But I swear..trying to wake up Alex and Sam is next to impossible. That will undoubtedly be the hardest part of this mission.
By the time everyone had eaten and dressed, Grace had already packed up the camp for us, so we just started hiking. I really hope we've been going the right way. Sam seems to know what she's doing though.
By the way - not that you care, but hiking sucks. It's hot and there's bugs everywhere and we have NO PATH. NONE. So we spend most of the day getting tiny little scrapes all over our legs and bug bites literally everywhere. And we still have a couple more days of hiking ahead of us. All of this just to go talk to a little agency that didn't send a few pieces of research over? Ugh.
We stopped in a little clearing around noon and ate a lunch of chicken. I miss Chick fil A already. We were all just quietly eating when Sam froze, put down her food, and slowly walked over to a tree. We were all pretty confused until we saw it: blood. A lot of blood. It was literally dripping off of the trees branches. When we looked closer, we could even see little bits of torn cloth. According to Alex, it was still warm.
Sam was oddly quiet after that. I mean, we all were, but she seemed really disturbed. I was desperate to peek in her head and see what was bothering her so much, but I have a rule with myself to never look in friend's heads without permission. It's just rude. I hope she gets over it soon.
We have no idea what that blood could have been. Hunting is illegal here and the rules are strictly enforced. But still, the cloth made us think it was a human who lost all that blood. In any case, it thoroughly freaked us all out.
We walked in silence until the sun started to set. Sam and Alex set up camp and Grace and I made dinner (mashed potatoes). We even built a fire..which took absolutely forever. Everyone else seems to be kind of enjoying this whole camping thing. I hate it. Everything about it unnerves me. I'm ready to get back to computers and cities and things that are not dark and creepy.
Speaking of dark and creepy, another incident happened around 8 pm tonight. Sam and I were in our tent, getting ready to go to bed. We had our lantern thing set on the ground, which cast a bunch of creepy shadows that I did not enjoy. But one shadow in particular stood out: it was in a corner and it looked like a human head..but with ears. Like, animal ears. Maybe cat or dog, idk. It wasn't the head that I noticed - it was the movement. I swear to god I saw the ears twitch. When I got Sam's attention, it moved back into the rest of the shadows. I doubt I'll be sleeping tonight.
I don't think Sam believed me, but I know what I saw. Just thought I'd put it on the record in case we end up dying at the hands (claws?) of a mutant animal-person thing.
Well, that's all I've got for today. Hopefully we live to see tomorrow.
Waiiit, that sounded really dark. Nope, let's end on a good note. Umm..Peter Pan. There. Okay bye.
-Emma
