Chapter 12

The five of us, bound by the friendship that has linked us for many years and a shared sense of unease, make our way to the mysterious door from a few days ago. As I insert the key, the lock clicks open with surprising ease, and we step inside, in what is still unknown for the others. Curiosity outweighs any fear. “Are you ready?” I ask, to which they nod.

Inside, the room is just as I left it: bare except for the chair, which is empty. No-one is sitting. But there's something different: a single envelope with my name on it rests on the seat. I pick it up as I feel my heart racing and my veins on the verge to explode. It may be physically light, but I sense it heavy, like it holds the answers I’ve sought for days.

"What's in there?" Anton whispers in a barely audible voice.

I tear open the envelope; when it’s reduced to shreds, a USB drive falls on the floor. I pick it up; then, I show it to the rest of the group. "Look, guys, it's a USB," I murmur, turning it over. I notice a note attached, written in the same cold, precise handwriting as the card from the necklace I found in that scavenger hunt. It reads. ‘Play me. Your next challenge awaits. Do it, or you’ll regret it.’

We quickly leave the room, locking the door behind us, and move to my bedroom, where we huddle around my laptop, plugging in the USB. The screen turns on; then, I go through the files. There’s a single video.

“Open it,” says Brianna, eaten by curiosity.

I do as she says. Here is a video message from the man I met last night. What if he’s an employee from POTENTIAL+, or directly the mastermind behind this project? Maybe this message uncovers his identity. All I have to do is play this video.

The mysterious man stands in a room we don't recognize, his smile as unsettling as ever. "Welcome to the real game," he says, his eyes seemingly piercing through the screen in a scary way, as if this were the beginning of an enticing thriller. "You've proven your worth. Now, it's time to see if you can handle the truth." Finally. We’re reaching the climax, finding out if this is what has been promised or if it goes beyond that.

The video cuts to a montage of our lives: clips from our social media, photos we’ve always thought were private, even snippets of conversations we'd had in the mansion. Watching ourselves being observed in such an intimate manner scares the hell out of us. Lindsey has been right this whole time. There are cameras here! I guess we have to find them as soon as possible.

Back to the video. The closing message starts to unravel as our pasts, our fears and our deepest secrets are laid bare in a shocking twist. The games we’ve played have been nothing but a test. A way to gauge our trust and willingness to participate—rather cruel, I’d say.

The man on the screen confirms our suspicions. We've been chosen for a social experiment, one that promises to change our lives forever. Well, that was actually in the letter we received before settling here. “Over the next twenty days,” he says, “you'll be faced with challenges that will push you to your limits in all senses: physically and emotionally.”

Anton protests. “This wasn’t mentioned in the letter!” He has a point; it’s not like any of us is to blame. That person is trying to pass us off as gullible—we’re anything but.

“Mr. Unknown,” as Lindsey refers to him, continues talking, stating that the final prize is worth way more than money or fame. It's a chance to escape our dead-end jobs, our complicated relationships, our entire lives. Again, our main goal, something we already know.

“There's a catch, though, otherwise what kind of project would be?” I nod. This is a giant test by POTENTIAL+ to strain our patience. The challenges, as “Mr. Unknown” explains, are designed to break us down, to strip us of our defenses until we're nothing but raw, exposed nerves.

As if things aren’t scary enough, we have to agree to go through with it unconditionally, or the doors of the mansion won't open for us again. What does this mean, that we’re unable to leave? Or that we won’t be allowed to return if we desire to come to visit again? This person owes us a more detailed and convincing explanation. In person, not through a video message.

We look at each other, as we come to the scathing realization that we're not just participants in this project. We're lab rats in someone's twisted game of personal growth. Typical of corporations. How couldn’t I see through this pattern? This is a question I didn’t expect to ask myself at first, which is telling.

The video ends at last. We're left staring at the blank screen and pondering the next move. "What do we do?" Brianna asks, her voice trembling and betraying a growing insecurity.

Anton stands up, determination filling his eyes. "We stick together," he says firmly. "Whatever this is, we face it together. We have no other choice if we want to come out."

Lindsey nods. "We came here for an adventure, remember. Let's not let fear ruin it, and enjoy what’s left of these days in stride."

I conclude. “You’re right, guys. Let’s not leave each other’s side. Only this way, we’ll be able to end this project on a high note—and hopefully meet that man all together to ask him more questions.”

With a mix of excitement and trepidation, we all agree to continue. We're not sure what we're signing up for, but it’s too late to back down. So, let the game continue. We're ready to break free from our cages, in all senses, and discover what still lies beyond the walls of this mansion. We’re spoiled for choice as to what rooms to explore next—according to the map, there have to be seven or eight rooms we haven’t set foot in yet.

Each of us retreats in their own bedroom for the next few hours, before we reunite for dinner in a completely different spirit from before.

The next few days are a whirlwind of various activities, both spontaneous and suggested by the mysterious man from the secret room. We're given tasks that seem innocent at first—like cooking a gourmet meal or solving a complex puzzle. However, they quickly escalate into something more intricate.

As previously explained, the challenges are designed to test our limits, to see how much we're willing to give for a taste of true freedom. As we push ourselves further, we start to uncover layers of our personalities we didn't know existed, revealing unexpected sides of ourselves.

One evening, we're told to gather in the grand hall. “What do you think it is?” asks Brianna.

“Maybe they’re throwing a party for us,” answers Kat with a disingenuous tone. “I love parties—maybe this one will be even better than the one by the swimming pool.”

“Are you sure? I think it’s something more solemn.”

I guide the rest of the group to the point we’re told to reach, until we enter the hall, a grandiose room that’s lit by a dozen flickering candles that cast long shadows across the floor. We see a line of chairs and take seats in no particular order. After a long wait, the same man from the video appears, with two assistants as unnerving as him at his side.

He claps his hands thrice. "You've all done well," he says, his eyes sweeping over us and studying our expressions. "But now, we must take things to the next level."

“What does it mean?” I ask.

He holds up a set of keys. "Good question, Silla. I like your proactive approach. By the way, these keys unlock the doors to the next phase of your journey.” Now, I want to explore more and more—I find pleasure in discovery.

He sternly warns. “But beware, what lies ahead is not for the faint of heart. You must choose, no alternatives. Either you face the unknown, or you stick to your comfort zone. If you choose this second option, however, you’ll lose your chance at attaining true freedom.”

When he’s done, he and his assistants abandon the room in a rush, barely leaving traces. I turn to the others with a resolute look. “Do you agree with me? We move forward to the unknown. This is our great chance. We can’t afford to waste it.”
