nineteen

On my way to find these street musicians I receive a call that surprises me. My friends are not the type to call unless there's something punctual, like trying to find out where the hell the other is. That's why I'm surprised when I see Moni's contact on the screen of my mobile phone. Out of all my friends she's probably the worst at calling or keeping in touch, so it's even weirder that it's her the one calling me right now. But then again, it's not that odd because they know I'm supposed to meet a complete stranger today and they've been wary of this moment from the beginning. I mean, the advised me against it.

I decide to stop at a small convenience store to buy a bottle of coke before I pick up the call. All this walking is exhausting, I normally just walk when headings home or leaving home. I'm not exactly tired but I think it's okay to take a little rest before I continue with my quest.

"Hello?" I say pressing the mobile against my ear.

"Uff, you're alive. That's a relief. I'm glad you didn't get killed," my friend says and I chuckle.

"Yeah, no murder. I was just sold in the black market. Nothing out of the ordinary," I joke picking the bottle I'll buy. The shop is small and I'm the only costumer.

"It happens to everyone, don't worry," Moni jokes along And I keep the smile as I head to the counter and pay for my drink.

"I know, I mean after the third time I got totally used to it. I'm an expert by now," I continue and we both laugh.

This is something we always do and which is a bit weird for normal people. Okay, really weird. When we try to play like this with other people it's never the same, they can't really go with the flow. We always start with something small and it keeps escalating and escalating until it becomes something so bizarre we cry for laughing so hard. It's an unusual sense of humour and it works so well between us. We know exactly when the other is joking even if we keep a straight face or if it doesn't sounds plausible. It's a sense of humour tainted with darkness and cruelty, but we never get offended. It flows so easily between us, our crazy theories and dark jokes that it's hard to remember other people don't do this, people don't take their jokes to the limit and beyond. Normal people don't extrapolate every thing they heard or make absurd crazy theories. When I interact with my friends from secondary school, I'm reminded that my humour is not the norm and not everyone understands us.

"I hope you have a decent master now," Moni muses. "Last time she was so annoying. I'm not surprised you got rid of her."

"And thanks to watching Criminal Minds and CSI I got away with murder, literally," I continue and I bet my friend is nodding. The woman who receives my money looks at me so horrified and I can't help it, I laugh out loud. That's the normal reaction from people when they hear us joking whilst sounding as if we were talking about the weather.

"And my mum says we watch too many of those shows. Pff, little she knows it's just research for our plans to kill everyone and cleanse the world," Moni continues and I just walk away from the shop, unscrewing the bottle to take the first sip.

It's a lovely autumn afternoon, chilly but bearable. The wind is cold but at the same time refreshing. I take off my wool hat to let the soft wind brush my hair and feel a bit free.

"Murder plans aside, because we'll let David Tennant Handle those, how's it going? Is he nice?" Moni asks in a more excited tone.

"In fact I haven't met him yet," I confess and I swear I can hear her gasping. In my mind I see my brunette friend with a shocked expression, frowning at the mobile.

"Mila!" I hear her calling out loud. "Maca says she hasn't met her post-it guy!"

Next thing I hear some noise and I assume my other friend is now next to Moni and they've put the speaker. "How's that you haven't met him?" Mila demands. "You left this morning to meet him and we've been the whole day worried sick and you're telling us you haven't met him?!"

I smile at her words. If it were the other way around I would also be worried sick because I don't know if my friend is safe. Meeting a stranger is very dangerous and I could actually get sold in the black market. I mean, that's a risk I'm taking. But contrary to my friends might fear of, by now I'm not scared of meeting him, I'm just scared of disappointing him.

"Don't tell me he stood you up 'cos if he did I'm gonna find him and kill him myself," Moni threatens and I know she means it. "I'll find him, show you his face, and then destroy it."

"He hasn't done that," I reply. "Or he hasn't yet. I've met loads of other people first," I explain and I can imagine the expressions of my two friends: completely confused.

"How so? I thought only one was leaving the post-its. Was it a team instead?" Moni questions and she sounds so lost.

I laugh as I look for a place to sit so I can explain to my friends what's going on. I've been too busy to text them and keep them updated. I just sit at the tables outside the convenience store. "When I arrived at the bench-" I relate calmly, "-I found a letter. Long story short, he planned a scavenger hunt for me in which I collect the letters of his names as I tour the city, meeting people and places I never imagined could exist. In each place I find a new letter written by him with the next clue. It's been so fun and it's eased the worries away. All these people know him and tell me things about him, plus the letters also help to understand him better."

My friends stay in silence for a few seconds and I know they are just processing the information. No one warned me this could happen so of course they are surprised. I wish they could see the smile I'm wearing right now, I bet they would be happy to see me honestly enjoying myself. That would put them at ease for sure.

I wish they could join me today and see all the places I've visited, meet all the people who have helped me today to smile wider and more honestly. I wish they could also experience this journey with me in which I've learnt a lot and that has helped me to reflect on so many things.

"So you don't even know his name yet?" Mila asks and I nod.

"I have a few letters but I haven't tried to guess the name yet. I'm more focused on following the directions. I just call him H as that's the first letter he gave me," I explain naturally.

"I bet his name is Horacio Leopoldino del Transito," Moni suggests and I laugh out loud. Where does she even get those names?

"Most likely so I'll keep calling him H if that's the case," I follow her guess still smiling. It'd be so funny if that's his name, but then Coni said it was only ten letters so that can't be.

"What are the letters you have?" Mila asks and I have to think about it. I can't remember all the letters so I take out my journal and open it where I keep the envelopes with the pages he's written for me.

"Let's see," I start opening the envelopes in order. "So far I have H, L, D, E, O, I and R," I provide and I hear them muttering as they think.

"I think it's Helgo Rhode," Moni suggests making me laugh again.

"Maybe, but Horacio Leopoldino is cooler," I ponder still smiling. "Anyhow, the name is irrelevant by now, I'm fine with just calling him H. The letters are always the last detail but all the other things that he writes are far more important and relevant. And the places he's taken me to!" I can't contain my excitement when I think of all the places I've gone. "I took pictures of every place so I'll show you later."

"Where have you gone?" Mila asks and she sounds different, calmer and happier wen she speaks. She's already noticed how happy I'm feeling today. It's been so long since I had such a good day. Not just a moment, a whole day.

Once I saw on Tumblr an idea of keeping a jar and putting inside notes with the good things that have happened to me. I thought it was really cool because I tend to forget the good things and only focus on the negative side of my life, plus I get really depressed during New Year's so I decided to do a jar of happy moments too to read the notes during that night. Today, when I get home, I'll write many papers with all the things I've done.

"It started with a café slash book shop that it had a whole section dedicated to Shakespeare! And when I got there the waiters started singing! It was a musical, just for me. I couldn't believe it," I giggle happily at the memory. "Then I went to a book fair and it was so cute. I met a retired Shakespeare professor and I bought a few very cheap books. Then I went to an animal shelter and there I met a couple, Rosalind and Orlando, like in As You Like It! And I promised I would go back to volunteer. Then I went to a whovian meeting and I did a Clara cosplay and we acted the scene from the Christmas special when the Doctor gives Clara the key. And then I had lunch in a vegan restaurant. So delicious! We have to go there one day. And then I went to the Street of Art, which is so cool! Everyone paints there it changes all the time. And now I'm heading to meet some street performers," I finish running out of air and I can hear chuckles from the other side

Wow, I've done loads of things today, I'm amazed.

"Loads of Shakespeare references," Mila inputs and I nod vigorously even if they can't see me.

"He's an actor so he also loves Shakespeare," I tell them.

"OMG, meant to be," Moni laughs quoting Blake from that The Voice episode we watched together. "But it sound so fun, Maca. I'm actually jealous right now. When we go visit you have to take us to all these places," my friend request and I just snort.

"Of course. I've only been thinking of how much you'd like these places if you were here. Just come visit soon! I've missed you," I tell them and I hear their 'aw's.

"We miss you, too," they say in unison and I smile. "So you're in the middle of your quest and we are delaying you," Moni adds. "Go then, my little grasshopper! And calls us when you're done. Don't forget to tell us the other places and send the pictures," she instructs further.

"Will do," I promise and we say our goodbyes after reminding the other how much we love each other.

I shove my mobile back into my purse and hold my head high, ready for what will come. I missed talking to my girls and being able to tell them all what I've done today has surely put me in an even better mood and it has also reassured them. It's been very hard with them away, it's hard being left behind, but I know I'll catch up soon and it'll be like in the old times or even better.

I feel like I've changed today, this whole experience of meeting so many people has certainly taught me a lot and I'm grateful to H for leading me here. Without him I would've stayed home, sulking and at the edge of another breakdown. He's pushed me to do things out of my comfort zone and that's helped me to feel better today and if I keep the lessons with me, I should do better in the future. Today I've done things everyone's been telling me to do for a long time and now that I can really see how much going out and actually doing something helps, I must continue.

Feeling hopeful and with an even wider smile, I grab my things-purse and Polaroid-I continue my way to meet the street musicians, thinking of what song I could request for. I plug in my earbuds and let my mobile entertain me with random songs as I make my way. I'm really eager to keep meeting fabulous people.
