The Underneath
Alexis-
They all turned around to leave.
"You think I'm just gonna waltz over to have a sit-down with you psychos, then let you cut my freaking fingers off?" The boy said. He didn't seem to like the idea.
"Just shut up for once." The second boy said and Alexis couldn't help but smile.
Jorge, Alexis, Brenda and the boys continued to go to the food supplies. Brenda was walking next to the second boy.
She could tell what Brenda was thinking about this boy and this made her smile.
Alexis let her pace slow so she could walk beside Brenda and the boy.
"What's your name?" She asked the him abruptly. Alexis couldn't help but feel this boy was familiar in some way.
It took him a while to answer. It seemed like he was thinking it through.
"Thomas." He finally said.
Thomas.
Why was that name so familiar? She suddenly remembered all the signs around the city. Metal plaques that read, Thomas you're the real leader.
Alexis smiled.
"Hello Thomas. I'm Alexis."
The rest of the walk was in silence. All that could be heard was the shuffling of feet against the hot yellow sand. The sun pounded on Alexis' face making her need to squint to see where she was going. They finally reached where the food was held. A set of stairs had been built into the ground. Alexis pushed her way through the crowd and didn't think twice about going down. Although, the grip on her spear tightened as she prepared herself for danger. She heard the thump of footsteps following her.
Cool wind cascaded onto Alexis's face and she welcomed it happily. The scorch was often burning hot so the underneath always felt like a good place to be. Besides the cranks that were past the gone lurking down there, of course.
Alexis knew the way off by heart. She confidently led the group to the food supplies. There was the dim orange glow of the room before them. Someone lightly grabbed her shoulder and Alexis whipped around. It was only Brenda. Being in a city of cranks meant that you always had to be ready and aware. Brenda gave her a knowing smile.
She then turned around and addressed the group.
"You guys can stay out there in the hallway, find a wall and sit. We'll start bringing out some tasty delights for you in a sec."
They advanced into the room and rummaged around in the cardboard boxes for some cans of food. All of the labels were in Spanish, but the girls ended up choosing lots of beans and some type of sausage. Alexis and Brenda passed out the food to every Glader and they looked immensely grateful. Alexis watched as Brenda took a seat next to Thomas. Brenda handed him a backpack full of more food cans and weapons. She was fulfilling the mission well by helping him. This was basically what WICKED wanted them to do.
Alexis sat next to Jorge and the black haired boy.
"My name is Alexis." She announced to the boy. He raised his eyebrows and looked at her. Honestly, she didn't really care what any of these boys thought of her.
"What's yours?"
"Minho." He responded.
"But I don't really care what your name is shank. You're just here to help us get through the city." He added.
She was starting to dislike this boy but she couldn't disagree with him. That's exactly what she was doing. Alexis sighed and continued to eat her beans.
A sharp, short rumble sounded from above. It was very quiet, and if you hadn't been paying attention, you would of missed it. Living in a city full of cranks really made you alert. When something was wrong, you knew it. Alexis was on her feet in an instant and so was Jorge. Jorge ran over to Brenda and whispered something into her ear.
Brenda's eyes widened with fear. She began to stand up when a crash erupted and exploded the stairs they used to get down there. Waves of dust clouded their vision. Alexis's feet were already moving. The whole staircase had collapsed in a heap and there only other option was a branching hallway.
Another crash sounded from behind her. She whirled around and noticed an entire section of the roof had fallen down. Blocks of cement were scattered about the room. Alexis scanned the survivors. She saw Jorge but Brenda and Thomas were missing. Brenda knew her way around the Underneath but who knew how many cranks past the gone were living down there.
There was nothing she could do now. What happened had happened. She now had to hope that Brenda could make it out alive.
Was this what the world had come to?
Alexis snapped out of her daze as more parts of the ceilings shattered besides her.
The Gladers and Jorge had already started running down the separate hallway. Alexis followed them.
They ran for about 10 minutes through a dark, grimy and direct hallway. It wasn't too long before they reach a staircase similar to the one that was destroyed.
"You know where we're going. Lead the way and I'll take the rear." Jorge whispered to Alexis. She followed his command and walked steadily up the stairs.
Jorge, Brenda and Alexis had organised a secure place to go if they ever got separated, and that's where she planned to go.
Alexis's palms sweated with the firm grip on her spear. She situated the spear strategically in front of her body. If anyone was hiding at the top of these stairs, she wouldn't hesitate to kill them. As soon as the first droplet of sun reached her forehead, she darted towards the nearest building.
The coast was surprisingly clear. Something was up. Alexis suspected that it was Barkley and his mates who had blown up the staircase so why had they left this one untouched? She signalled for the rest of the boys to come out. One by one, they all did. She noticed that they were quite a conspicuous bunch. It would be hard to avoid cranks and hide if there were so many of them.
"Alright everyone, listen up." Alexis said, addressing the group.
"Jorge and I will lead you to a safer place for the time being. Then we can discuss the plans to get you to your safe haven."
As soon as she said it, Alexis realised she had said too much.
"I don't think we ever mentioned a safe haven." A boy informed. He had dirty blonde hair and his eyes were light brown.
His eyes were so pure, yet held so much misery.
Alexis swallowed thickly.
"I told her hermano. Thomas mentioned that to me." Jorge lied. She had already known because part of her mission was to get them there.
"Now if you guys haven't noticed, we're a large group standing out in the open, in a city full of blood thirsty cranks. Let's get a move on, otherwise you're going to be on the menu." He smirked at their disgusted reactions.
