The Past

Flashes of memories skidded through Alexis' head. She had tried so hard to forget her past and where she had come from.

Shadows of the maze walls looming above her, metallic clicks and clacks following her every move. That place was haunting but ironically, even though the whole time you were trying to escape, the maze was better than the outside world. Alexis pushed her body to the absolute limits trying to survive there. After only a couple of days after being banished, she began to feel utterly weak. There was only so long she could go without food and water.

Feeling dizzy and dazed, one day she decided to go back inside the glade. At first she hid from everyone else but deep inside she still thought her friends would take her back. Forgive her for what she had done. Surely nobody deserved to die in such a horrible way!

But what she saw that day changed her mind for good about everything.

The faces of every single girl she had come to know lay before her very eyes.
They were smiling and continuing with their life as if nothing had even happened. As if they had not just sent their best friend to die!

Anger rose inside of her which drove her to make insane decisions. After stealing food from the storage cupboards she then made a vow to herself.

She was going to find a way out.

To be fair, Alexis wasn't in the right state of mind but there was no way to describe the urge she felt to get out of the Maze. The drive and desire she felt to leave this all behind.

To leave the Grievers behind, the endless corridors behind – and most of all – to leave her old friends behind.

It was a selfish choice – but endless days and nights spent attacking metallic machines and running for your life didn't necessarily make you a better person. It changed Alexis forever. Her views on life had swapped completely.

She had spent one whole year inside the maze searching and scavenging for food back in the Glade. It was like she had become a wild animal. One day, something snapped inside of Alexis. There was no way out. She was never going to make it. All her life would be infinite seeking for an answer –

An answer to a question that couldn't be solved.

That was it.

If that was going to be her life, was life even worth living?

That's when it all became too much and Alexis jumped off the cliff in the maze.
