The Gladers
All the boys sat on the ground. Alexis took a good look at all their faces. 50 boys had been sent into that maze. She was now staring at the 11 survivors.
Jorge cocked his head to the side slightly, informing the group to pull out their weapons. The group of cranks followed their leaders command and pulled hidden weapons out of their tattered clothing. Reluctantly, Alexis followed and pulled out her spear. She never knew someone could grow so fond over a old piece of wood. It gave her a sense of safety and the ability to defend herself.
One of the boys got slowly onto his feet, his arms raised in defence. He tried to reason with Jorge.
"Me and you. Ten minutes. Alone. That's all I ask. Bring all the weapons you need." He said hesitantly.
"Only 10 minutes." Jorge agreed.
"If I give the word, let the death games begin." He added and then walked into a dark, narrow hallway with the boy. Alexis shuddered at that thought. It wouldn't be the first time she had killed someone but the death games sounded like a horrifying thing to her. The boy who had attacked Jorge began to stand up. He had a dark black quiff, looked very muscular and had tanned skin.
Before he had a chance to however, Alexis lunged forward with her spear pointed in his direction. He opened his mouth and was probably about to say another stupid comment but then another boy nudged him and he shut his mouth. This boy with black hair had various burns scattered about his body. He must of been struck by lightning in the storm. A wave of pity flowed through her body but she thrust it away. She must play her part as a crank. She can't distract herself from her mission. She shouldn't even feel any emotion for these boys. As bad as this was, this was just the way it had to be. A hysterical laugh burst out of her mouth. Although she wouldn't admit it, Alexis felt proud in her acting as a crank.
"You can't go anywhere little boy." Alexis taunted. She was surprised at how crazed she sounded. The group of cranks inched forward, making sure
none of the teenagers could make a break for it. The boys backed into the corners. Minutes of silence passed. Eventually, Jorge and the boy walked back into the large room.
"Alright everybody, we've come to a resolution." Jorge announced while eyeing me and Brenda. He gave off the impression that everything was going to be okay and they weren't going to hurt the boys.
"First of all, we need to give these people food. I know it seems stupid to give our hard earned grub to strangers, but I think they can help us."
Alexis expected groans to come from the cranks but they remained silent - so Jorge continued,
""Second, being the grand gentleman and saint that I am, I've decided not to kill the punk who attacked me."
This time the cranks reacted. There were disappointed groans and sighs but Alexis remained motionless. She saw Brenda roll her eyes at the feedback from the number of individuals.
"Now, I assure you, there will be a punishment." Jorge declared and he shot a sly glare at the boy with the black quiff. Jorge played his part almost perfectly.
"Oh yeah, and what's that gonna be?" The boy said. Alexis just sighed. This boy was seriously cocky.
"You punched me with both your fists, so I'm going to cut a finger off each hand."
Honestly, Alexis couldn't tell if Jorge was being serious. A few fingers would definitely not hurt the boy in the long run. Years ago, cutting off someone's fingers would of angered her but a few years can change somebody. She was just a WICKED zombie now. Obeying their every command. That's who everyone was besides the cranks. That's what the world had come to.
The cranks hollered and a hoot blurted out of Alexis' mouth. Even though Alexis was immune, she couldn't help but think that she was becoming one of them.
The boy stood up and began to charge but Alexis stood forward and put her spear under his chin. Her swift motion cut his throat only slightly, but it was enough to make him stop in his tracks.
"Here's the plan," Jorge said calmly. "Brenda, Alexis and I will escort these moochers to the stash, let 'em eat up. Then we'll all meet on the Tower, let's say one hour from now." He looked at his watch. "Make that noon on the dot. We'll bring up lunch for the rest of you."
"Why just you and Brenda?" One of the stronger cranks - Barkley - yelled.
Jorge just scoffed.
"Shut your mouth and lead everyone to the tower!"
I suppose Jorge wasn't going to go through with the punishment. Alexis was ashamed at her disappointment. Did she want him to be punished? What was happening to her? It's like she just couldn't feel any emotion anymore.
"Fine." Barkley huffed.
"I hope they slit your throat" He muttered under his breath. The cranks shuffled down the hallway and once they were out of sight, Alexis retrieved the spear from the boys throat.
"I really would of killed you." She said, wiping the blood off her hands.
The boy wiped the slight wound with his thumb.
"That's one sharp spear. Makes me like you more." He grinned.
"Looks like I'm not the only crank standing here." Alexis responded.
"You're more gone than me."
"None of us are crazy yet," Jorge interrupted.
"But it won't be long. Come on, let's get you guys some food."
