Bloodbath
Alexis rushed over to Jorge.
"It's too dangerous." She whispered so only he could hear.
"We have to split up. There's no way we can get through the city with this much people." She said briskly. They were wasting too much time. Cranks would be here any moment. Jorge nodded his head absentmindedly.
"Okay. I hate splitting up with you but okay. Half will go with me, half will go with you." Jorge replied.
"You know where we are going. Be careful." He muttered and with that, he turned around and spoke to the group.
"It's too risky to go through the city with so many people," Jorge began but Minho interrupted.
"Are you suggesting we split up?" He heaved.
"That's exactly what I'm suggesting. It will be safer for all of us." Jorge said calmly.
"No." Minho said stubbornly.
'Can he shut up?' Alexis thought
Why did this kid have to have an opinion on everything! They were trying to save him for goodness sake.
"Listen." Jorge said sternly.
"We are trying to help you get through the city. Without us, you're nothing. Now cooperate with me if you want to live!"
Minho didn't respond but instead nodded his head sheepishly.
Jorge then separated the boys into two groups. Unfortunately, Alexis received Minho in her group. She also acquired the blonde haired boy – who she later found out to be called Newt – and three other boys she didn't recognise.
Alexis gave Jorge one last hopeful look. Her eyes almost began to water as she thought of all the horrible outcomes that could happen. She shook her head. No. Jorge and Brenda were smarter than that. They can survive.
With that, she turned around and led her group in the opposite direction to Jorge's group.
First, Alexis planned to stock up on some more food. She knew of only one more place that still had food and miserably, it was deeper into the city.
They had to duck behind buildings and stealthily navigate around crank filled mad houses. Alexis had only talked to Newt on the way, she had not bothered to talk to anyone else. She took a liking to the boy. He was honest and courageous and she liked that.
Alexis and her new companions were only about five metres away from the food storages, when a group of cranks surrounded them in a circle.
There were about eight cranks altogether. She knew they would be able to defeat them, but they all had to work as a team.
"Are you lost?" One of them said in a hysterical voice. They were inching in slowly. Alexis made the first move. She thrust her spear through the nearest cranks chest. It was a horrible sight. The crank fell to the ground, spluttering and coughing. She couldn't bear to look at him.
The rest of her group followed Alexis's lead and began to attack the cranks.
Blood bathed the concrete and screams echoed in the silence.
Most cranks attacked wildly and stupidly so this was an easier fight than most. In almost no time, the boys and Alexis had overcome the unsuspecting cranks. She sighed at the blood that now stained her clothes.
"We have to keep moving." Alexis huffed.
She looked around at the boys horrified expressions and she had forgotten that they had probably never killed someone before. She remembered the first time she had killed another person. Terrible memories came rushing back to her and as she looked around at the bodies, she felt sick. It was a literal blood bath.
What was she becoming?
She was becoming a monster.
Alexis had not even acknowledged how many people she had killed until now. Tears threatened to fill her eyes and she felt herself shake uncontrollably.
A lot of the boys were the same. It was such a traumatising experience.
One of the boys cleared his throat and Alexis came back to reality. They had to leave now. She looked up to see it was Minho. She almost respected him for moving on so quickly but she felt disgusted at the same time.
"Let's go." She said emotionlessly.
There would be times when Alexis's appalling and dreadful experiences would get the better of her. It was like she couldn't function when that happened. Her life has been a series of horrible events. Seeing her best friends turn into cranks and her loved ones dying. There wasn't an end to it.
She would push all of her feelings away. Leaving her to be mostly emotionless. At the worst of times, Alexis would do all her tasks without thinking. Her brain would just shut down. She wouldn't feel anything. She couldn't feel any emotions.
This was one of those situations. She trudged on into the food storages. It was a hidden tunnel that led to a bigger room full of food. Her mind was blank and her responsiveness was distant. She grabbed food and passed it around. There was also backpacks which she handed out too.
"Are you alright?" Minho asked cautiously. Alexis didn't respond. She couldn't respond.
