Chapter 9 - Case ii
That night you had another nightmare, about Jungkook. Well, not necessarily about Jungkook but the thing that controlled him.
Talented and brave, and beautiful, just like your mother.
Talented and brave, and beautiful, just like your mother.
just like your mother.
just like your mother.
She was dead, so what did it matter. That thing had just been playing with you.
The sentence would not leave your conscious for the life of you and it was making you paranoid as you trudged your drowsy, sleepy self through the busy streets of Seoul to a more quiet area, to the address Bang had given you. The walk should have been relaxing but after your restless last night you were just wishing to get back into your warm cosy bed and sleep for a day.
You cursed to yourself. You only hoped your sleepiness didn't become a problem later.
With the thoughts of your nightmare buzzing around your mind, it took your brain a minute to catch up with your surroundings. You seemed to have arrived at your destination.
The cafe was almost invisible, certainly to anyone who wasn't looking for it. It was nestled between two larger buildings and seemed to be sunk back slightly as if being protected by its parents. Thick dark green vines trailed up the walls from the ground and another set drooped over the roof and hung slightly over the top windows.
It seemed to be an odd place to put a cafe.
"Well, this is the address..." You voiced out in uncertainty, stepping towards the building with unsure feet.
You opened the door, a bell chiming above you signalling your arrival. A dark haired beauty stood behind the till, writing something down before looking up and noticing your presence.
She offered you a friendly smile.
"Hi there, are you eating in?" She asked, thinking of you as a customer.
"Uh no, thank you, I'm from the P.I.A. I'm here to-" you began before being interrupted by another voice.
"Oh my....You have got a lot of darkness on your trail, honey."
The comment caught you off guard and you turned to see a woman with the look of a predator in her sharp beautiful eyes. She had smooth light blonde hair that fell an inch above her shoulders.
She wore a black sleeveless top with an almost see-through cotton shawl that was decorated in flowery diamond patterns, and to top it off were the blue jean shorts and hippie jewellery wrapped around her wrists and ankles. Yes, very witchy. You sighed.
This was the person Shihyuk sent you too? You weren't expecting this.
"Are you going to ask to read my palm next? Make me drink some tea and read the remains of the tea leaves?" You mocked lightly. Although you took the piss out of her, you secretly thought in the back of your mind that she was stunning and that she made the outfit look even cooler.
She grinned at you like a cat.
"Soyeon. Jeon Soyeon." She greeted, sticking her hand out for you to shake. "And no, I won't but I can if you would like me too. For a sum of money of course." She chuckled. As you shook her hand you spotted her sleek black nails that were decorated with golden flecks.
"It's alright Shuhua, I'll take it from here."
"Okay," the dark haired waitress chimed, sending you a last smile and going back to her work.
"So, Mr. Shihyuk sent you to me." It was more of a comment than a question. You guessed you would have to get used to this psychic thing. Soyeon seemed to get a kick out of it.
"Yes. I guess you already know what for." You said, following her up a circular flight of polished wooden stairs that led to the upper level of the quiet cafe. She flashed you a smirk before leading you to a table in the corner that was surrounded by plants and bookshelves. The both of you took a seat, you placing your drawstring backpack on the floor.
The name 'Jeon' hit a bell in your mind and you couldn't help but ask, "If you don't mind me asking, do you happen to have any siblings? Perhaps a brother...?"
You don't remember seeing any siblings listed on Jungkook's case file but you couldn't help being curious.
She shook her head, blonde locks shifting around her perfectly shaped cheeks and leaned back in her seat comfortably.
"No I don't, I suppose you're asking if I'm related to a 'Jeon Jungkook'?"
"Ok, you have got to stop that."
She snorted and showed her teeth in her grin.
"I'm sorry but it never gets old. Anyway, I'll get down to business." As she spoke you couldn't help but feel yourself start to relax in her presence. She had this contagious laid back aura which was refreshing.
"I've been told that we can help each other," you said no longer trying to guess what she already knew and didn't know. She nodded, amusement fading from her features.
"Yes. I have made somewhat of a safe haven here for lost girls and boys. Young people who have had their lives fucked up by supernatural circumstances. So much like what your organisation does, only, I don't go out and hunt these things." She crossed her legs and picked at her nails as you watched a thought pass over her eyes. "Of course some of them have grown up now and work here at the cafe and bar. Some have left to try and get their lives back in check, though who is really normal after seeing that kind of shit?"
You looked at Soyeon in awe after hearing that such a place exists. She was passionate as she spoke too, in a way you thought it meant you could trust her. It made you feel like the P.I.A weren't the only ones fighting against supernatural misfortunes and suffering. Of course you knew you weren't the only ones but you weren't aware of there being others in the same city.
"Bar?" you questioned reverting back to what she'd mentioned earlier. You thought this place was a cafe...
"This cafe becomes a bar at night," Soyeon clarified. "So! You came here looking for some help with your little situation, correct? Something about a little cut in your soul perhaps?"
"Y-yeah..." you murmured, unsure.
"Well from what I know so far from Mr. Bang, you performed an exorcism and blacked out afterwards, right?"
You nodded slowly.
"These things can happen to anyone performing an exorcism, even priests who have a high spiritual power. It depends on the spirit possessing the victim. Some can be weak souls that struggle to keep a hold on the body they're controlling, others not so much, but its usually quite rare to find such a strong force, especially one that can render you unconscious." She explained drawing an invisible infinity sign on the polished wooden table with her black nail.
"As you know, it puts ones spiritual energy under pressure as you perform the exorcism, so this one must have put too much as its caused an incision of sorts. Get where I'm coming from so far?"
"I think so," you spoke. "Are you saying that the spirit I exorcised wasn't a regular one? No that any of them are regular but, along those lines?"
"Kind of, you're on the right track. It's difficult to know which ones are worse, I mean although there are a few books covering similar topics, there isn't exactly an encyclopedia for each and every spirit that remains on earth in our living realm," Soyeon chuckled. "But of course because it has happened before, people like us have tried to look into it. One way to tell how strong a force is, is too pay attention to how long they can control their victim for, I'm sure you've noticed by now that a few of your cases have had times where the spirit will disappear for a little while, allowing you to speak to the victim."
"Yeah, I have," you said, thinking back to when you brought Jungkook to the facility in the van, he had been himself, even if only for a short while. But that had been because you had knocked the evil spirit back with your talisman, forced the spirit into a kind of dormancy. However for the majority of the time that evil thing had been in control.
"I know you may feel doubtful because of such an easy solution but its as simple as consuming some ingredients for a couple of weeks. They will heal the cut that has been inflicted on your soul. They're a little cliche trust me, I know, but this is what will help you," the blonde explained, standing from her seat and moving over to a gathering of potted plants by a window. She ran her hand gently over the leaves and range of small flowers making you suddenly realise that each of the plants in this cafe were of a different sort. There was such a large variety you couldn't name many of them.
Soyeon picked a few and brought over a cup and teapot with boiled water.
"Nettle tea and calendula tea are the ones you want to drink throughout the day, maybe replace them for what you drink currently. And this is juniper incense and lotus incense, I suggest lighting some before you go to bed or in the morning when you wake up."
"That's seriously it?" You said with surprise written over your features.
"Why? What were you expecting?" Soyeon giggled.
"Honestly," you began, cheeks heating with slight embarrassment. "A ritual of some sorts or...I-I'm not sure."
"Nope, just tea and incense for now," Soyeon smiled at you. "Simple right? I'll pack some up for you to take back. Anyway, while you drink this," She said finishing the brew and sliding the full cup and saucer over to you. "I'll explain what I need from you in return."
You nodded, blowing gently on the steaming water and taking a timid sip. It was bitter.
"Minnie, a girl I had taken in a while back went off last week chasing ghosts and she hasn't returned," she said rather bluntly.
"By 'ghosts' do you mean the literal term or...?" You asked.
"Literally and metaphorically. Ghosts from her past. She's set on the notion that her childhood home is calling her back and that her dead mother has been trying to contact her. I think I have already made it clear to you that I know a lot of things, and I know that something has gone wrong."
"You didn't warn her?"
"Of course I did but shes a grown woman. She can do as she pleases."
"And you want me to go and see whats happened, help her out of this situation." You guessed.
"Yes. I know its a lot to ask for what you're getting in return, but I can't leave this place unattended," Soyeon said with a sigh.
"I understand, don't worry. Its my job so its not like I'm doing anything out of the ordinary."
"You have my thanks, (Y/n). I think what you, Shihyuk and his P.I.A do is very brave, not just anyone would go and hunt ghosts for a living."
"I will do my best, and thanks for the help," you said with a grateful smile.
Your phone suddenly buzzed in your pocket tearing you from your thoughts. Slipping the device from your pocket you saw that you had a message from an unknown number.
I'm outside when you're ready.
You bit the inside of your cheek.
Taehyung? Since when- Ah, Shihyuk must have given him my number.
You shouldn't have been surprised, this was your work phone after all, but you weren't sure how happy you were with Taehyung having your number so soon.
You wanted to be sure it was him, so you texted back.
Is this Taehyung?
You waited not a few seconds before the device buzzed again.
Petal! You used my first name! :)
Rolling your eyes you pocketed the phone and stood up, your tea-cup empty of its contents. You weren't sure that you felt much different other than feeling relaxed after drinking it, but if that's all it took then you'd keep drinking it.
"Well that's my que. Time to see was trouble your friend has gotten into."
Soyeon nodded and brought her own phone out from her back pocket and began typing.
"This is her old home address and that's where she said she was going. The house is uninhabited and boarded up so you won't be setting off any alarms if you get in," Soyeon explained showing you the lit up screen.
"Right okay." You memorised the address and nodded before heading down the stairs with Soyeon in tow.
Before you left you felt a hand touch your shoulder making you turn. "As grateful as we are please be careful, (Y/n). If you do find her, tell her to come home," Soyeon said quietly.
You nodded and gave the blonde an encouraging smile.
"I will."
You almost tripped over your own feet the second you spotted Taehyung outside.
He leant against a sleek deep red vintage Volvo P1800, hands shoved in his loose pants pockets as his neck was craned upwards looking towards the cloudy sky. His straightened locks fell over his closed eyes slightly as he basked in the sunlight that wasn't there. He looked so...Mature.
You caught yourself, realising what had just gone through your head and shook it off before making your way over.
How could someone who worked in a freaking morgue and was barely even trying, look so gorgeous merely leaning against a car? A nice one at that.
There's noway he owned that car. He must have stolen it or something, or borrowed it at the very least.
"I'm not late am I?" he asked once he spotted you coming out of the entrance to the cafe.
"No no, just on time. Very nice car by the way. Forgive me for asking, but, is it yours?"
He reeled back in mock offence. "Of course it is! Would you think so low of me to steal it?" He snickered.
"Whatever," you chuckled slightly. "You ready?"
"Ready as I'll ever be! Lets go catch a ghost!"
And just like that you deflated slightly, rolling your eyes before stepping round him towards the passenger seat.
"Hey, uh would you...You seem to like it a lot, would you like to drive it?" he asked hesitating to get in.
"What?" you said puzzled rather taken off by the sudden offer.
He laughed shaking his hair out of his eyes and strode around to your side.
You caught a faint whiff of his cologne from where he stood in front of you and you actually found the scent to be quite a pleasant one.
"Really, you'd let me?" you asked trying to mask your excitement, then caution, "Why?"
"Because I take it you're the one who knows where we're going, no?"
"O-oh," You said dumbly and let out a nervous giggle. "Yeah, I do."
He nodded with a kind smile, one that seemed to be rare for him before handing you the keys.
Taehyung's hands brushed yours as you took the keys from him and one thing that crossed your mind was that they were still cold to the touch.
It wasn't weird. People had cold hands all the time.
Even when they've been in his pockets?
Taehyung felt an itch on the back of his neck, the kind of itch that feels like someone's watching you. He turned and met the steely eyes of Soyeon.
His features were blank as he stared right back at her, before sending her a slow, sly smirk. Taehyung clicked his tongue and turned on his heel to head to the passenger seat of his car.
"Soyeon, you ok?" Shuhua asked from behind her, eyes flickering between Soyeon's stern expression and the man that got in the car with you.
"No, I don't like that one. There's something very off about him." The blonde muttered watching you drive off with Taehyung.
