Chapter 6 - Case ii
Jungkook was recuperating nicely. He seemed healthier, his cheeks pinker, eyes brighter and a smile every now and then, showing itself. Unbeknownst to you however, this was more so when you were around. Jungkook very much so kept to himself when it was someone else who came to give him his meds and check up on him. In fact he barely spoke to the other nurses and therapists. Perhaps he had just grown attached to you in that short amount of time. Of course he needed someone he could be close to, especially when he was being kept under lock and key in an unfamiliar place with unfamiliar faces passing through his vision at the facility like blurry faceless people.
The one face that did remain sharply clear in his mind was (Y/n)'s face.
He had finally been transferred to the rehabilitation ward where he was finally being treated with a light dose of therapy sessions and drugs for anxiety and depression.
Jungkook had been given a standard plain room, a double bed, nightstand, bookshelf (albeit a pretty empty bookshelf) and clothing closet, all of which he was given permission to decorate with a few of his own belongings to make it 'homier'. He probably would not be leaving for some time anyway. He had also been given permission to contact his mother every so often by letter if he wished to do so.
"(Y/n) please, I'll make sure nothing bad happens this time, I'll protect you!"
Jungkook's ears pricked to the voice outside his room. Who did that male voice belong too? It sounded very familiar.
"Jackson, no!" Jungkook's heart jumped in pleasant surprise at the sound of your distant voice.
"When have I ever let you down, (Y/n)? You know that Yugyeom and I would never let anything happen to you."
What was this? Were you doing something dangerous? Perhaps it was another case like his own. That idea did not sit well with Jungkook. He wasn't proud of being someone who put you in danger, even if it had been out of his control. Although it was your job, he felt guilty about the whole ordeal.
"Jungkook?"
He jumped at the sound of his name being called, and faced the woman sat in the chair opposite his own.
Jisoo gave him a concerned look. She was gentle, kind and understanding her skills as a therapist were good and Jungkook got on with her more than the others, but she wasn't quite you.
"Why isn't (Y/n) my therapist?" He questioned rather bluntly.
Although Jisoo had gotten used to Jungkook's straightforward behaviour, she was still caught off guard from his sudden question. She wasn't concerned that his tone had been slightly rude, but he had been asking for you each day he had been in the facility and she was beginning to grow wary of it.
Jisoo offered him a small smile however.
"I'm sorry Jungkook but, (Y/n) is very busy and she should actually be taking a break from the last exorcism she carried out."
"But she tends to another patient." he muttered with a scowl on his features.
Jisoo's brow furrowed. "How did you know that?"
Jungkook looked back up at her, jealousy wiped from his face which now held a nonchalant expression as he shrugged his shoulders. Jisoo eyed him suspiciously, yet continued with the session with an uncomfortable unease in the back of her mind.
"Hey, how are you feeling?" Jackson asked rather timidly. Timid was not written into Jackson's coding. It felt like he was taking pity on you, which made your shoulders hunch in irritation.
Walking back to the kitchen where you had last been with Jin to tidy the remains of your failed cooking session felt longer than it should have. Possibly because the images of what you saw in that vision swam round your mind like an Autumn wind that wouldn't leave till Spring.
"I'm fine." You said curtly.
It was a tone that told Jackson to back off and that there would be consequences if he didn't, so he sighed and gave up.
"So you gonna tell me what you saw? Because clearly, you did."
You took your time to reply as you started placing dirty utensils in the sink, and clearing off crumbs from the counter into the bin. You wanted your words to come out correctly, knowing Jackson's 'shoot first and ask questions after' personality, he'd probably come to silly conclusions.
"Well for starters I saw the nurse," Jackson's attention was suddenly unwavering, like he was about to watch a new hyped up movie, it made you want to let out a giggle, but didn't sue to the seriousness of the situation. "And she was running from something, and not the kind of run where you're late for something or running for the bus, like for her life." You hadn't realised you had stopped cleaning up as you spoke. You shook your head and continued your chore.
"Mark said she fell down those stairs, but I think you and I both know that there's a strong possibility that's not the case." Jackson said.
"Yeah...that's not all." You felt hesitant to explain the next part, you weren't so sure of yourself what happened. "There was a guy, I think, with messy dark brown hair and I'm not sure what I saw correctly but, he saw me."
"You sound silly, how could they have seen you when you weren't there? I think I remember you telling me that these visions are from the past." Jackson queried with a puzzled expression.
"I-I...don't know, but that's what it felt like." Noting Jackson's disbelief, you decided not to mention that they had spoke to you as well.
"So when are we going to check out this hospital then?" His eagerness didn't surprise you.
"Jackson, I can't. Mr. Bang won't let me until I've taken a few days rest." You said to him.
"Aish, yeah you're right. I'm sorry I completely forgot. You took quite a hit during that last case. Sorry, I got too caught up in the case again." He smiled sheepishly.
Jackson loved this job. You remember him telling you about his days as a kid and how much he wished to be a ghost buster when he grew up. Well dream come true, only it wasn't as adventurous and fun as the T.V shows suggested.
"Although I won't be able to join you straight away, why not go yourself and scope the place out? Get us some uniforms and fake I.D tags while you're at it." You offered with a small quirk of your lips.
Jackson groaned and rolled his head back in mock agony.
"That's Yugyeom's job, to get all the equipment. I just want to track down some ghosts." You rolled your eyes. "...but! Its probably a good idea to get some more info. I'm not sure how open a mental hospital will be to people telling them that one of their wacky patients is possessed." Jackson grinned.
"Jackson! You can't call them wacky!" You scolded, earning a quick apology from him. You sighed.
"Ok, tell me what you find when you get back, and be careful!" You shouted after the enthusiastic male as he strode out of the kitchen with a confident step.
You shook your head with a sigh and muttered with a amused grin, "What a man-child."
Once the kitchen had been tidied, you went off to the living area that was cut off from the patients. It was generally used by the P.I.A team when they were off duty, e.g not treating patients or chasing ghosts for example.
An automatic smile graced your lips upon seeing your friend Jisoo who was making herself a hot beverage.
"Ah (Y/n)!" She greeted brightly. "Do you want tea?"
"Please. How are things going with Jungkook?" Your question was usual enough but you didn't expect her to frown at it at she brewed the hot drinks.
"He's...he's doing better." She replied with an uncertain tone. You tilted your head at her. "Sorry, I mean yes, its just he seems overly fond of you."
"What do you mean?"
The brunette took both drinks in her hands and ushered you to the couch in front of the T.V that was blaring white noise in the background.
"He keeps asking after you, and he even asked me why you were not his therapist." She chuckled nervously. "I guess he's wondering why you're not because you were the one on his case after all."
"He might just want someone he knows better. Jungkook and I have spoken more than anyone here, he probably sees me as someone 'familiar' to him, that's all. He's on his own in an unfamiliar environment after a traumatising event, it must be scary."
She hummed in an agreement that didn't sound so certain as she sipped her drink timidly.
"I don't think he knows that you're on a break anyway." She admitted.
"Oh...Well, if you think some social interaction will do him some good I wouldn't mind spending some time with him?"
Jisoo looked as if she was about to reject that and say something about 'you're supposed to be resting!' but you interrupted before she could. "Before you say anything its not like I'll be doing a session with him, was thinking more along the lines of taking him out for some fresh air." You explained.
"Yes but (Y/n) you would still need to keep an eye on him, he wouldn't be allowed out of your sight so in theory you would still be working-" Jisoo babbled.
"Really Jisoo, I don't mind. Plus I like Jungkook, we get along."
She let out an exasperated sigh.
"Well if you're sure, please just take it easy."
You smiled at her defeat. Jisoo always cared about people's well being and it warmed your heart that someone was so caring. You were glad you had someone like her as your friend and not just your colleague.
The sudden news alert from the T.V caught your attention, your eyes flickering towards a familiar picture on the screen.
"A man has been arrested at a grocery store two days ago upon a unknown tip sent to the police about an armed robbery. Fortunately nobody was harmed and the man has been successfully taken into custody."
You watched the T.V in silence, seeing Jisoo's head turn towards you in your peripheral vision, keeping yourself nonchalant as you stared at the screen instead of meeting her gaze.
"Oh my God! (Y/n) were you not there at that store a few days ago!? You're so lucky to have missed that!" Jisoo exclaimed on the edge of her seat, eyes wide with bewilderment.
"Yeah, I'm very fortunate." You agreed. Little did your friend know that in fact you had been there at the time the store was being robbed. You were just relieved that no one was hurt and the police got your anonymous tip in time before anything seriously bad happened.
As you watched the footage, you instantly recognised the man being forcefully shoved against the police vehicle. Although slightly blurry due to the pixels on the screen, you could see the man's face pressed up on the vehicle's bonnet and what confused you was his expression, that should have been frustrated or angry from getting caught. Instead, dark eyes and a sick smirk where directed straight at the camera lens, straight through the T.V screen.
Your skin crawled.
