Chapter 5 - Case ii
"Hello Jin! How have you been?"
His response was better than the first few meetings you had with the man, but there was room for improvement.
He acknowledged your presence by looking up with a stoic expression and a nod. Well at least it wasn't a glare.
"Do you want to come to the kitchen with me? I bought ingredients for you like I mentioned last time I saw you." You offered him a friendly smile.
Please open up to me. Talk to me. Trust me. You were chanting in your head.
He didn't make any move at first, merely studied you for a moment, as if he thought you were tricking him somehow, then nodded silently in agreement.
Jin quietly followed you to the kitchen where you had set out all the fresh ingredients you had bought.
This was much better than a boring Q+A therapy session, you knew this would make Jin feel more at ease with your presence, perhaps even bond with you. With Jin feeling at ease it meant it would be easier for you to study him and his emotions, it made it easier for the both of you.
"Right, what would you like to make? I picked up a variety of ingredients so you could make a range of dishes and desserts." You beamed, clapping your hands together excitedly.
Jin watched the emotion beam on your face and couldn't help but think it was...
cute.
Jin scowled at his thoughts and shook them away. He proceeded to the table and picked and prodded at the range.
"Hmm, you could have picked up a few spices and sauces." He pondered rather arrogantly. Your smile fell and you pouted at the man with narrowed eyes. You weren't a cook, so you hadn't been entirely sure what to buy but couldn't he be the least bit grateful?
"But," He began again, lifting up a gorgeously red apple. "Thank you for thinking of me." You eyes widened at the minuscule smile that ghosted on Seokjin's plump lips, and his thank you.
He thanked you! You couldn't believe your eyes or ears.
Unconsciously, a large smile spread across your lips.
"You're very welcome! Now then, what should we make?"
You and Jin washed your hands and adorned your aprons. As you progressed, Jin found that you were fairly useless at cooking, and ended up having to guide you through each step much to his (dis)pleasure.
You watched in awe as Jin worked swiftly and flawlessly as he chopped through the veg and fruit and meats. He created sauces and spices from the ingredients you had picked, making you think you hadn't failed as you thought you had with the choices. He was like a wizard or a magician and you couldn't help but watch him with a sparkle in your eyes.
What you also noticed was Jin's posture and aura. His shoulders were relaxed and slouched, as if he were right at home, seeming to enjoy the activities he was doing. He seemed happy, even if his face didn't show it, and you took some pride in that, knowing this was partly your doing.
You tried to make small talk as the two of you worked side by side and surprisingly, Jin indulged you. Perhaps it was because he was comfortable and in his element at the moment and so he was unconsciously replying and being rather pleasant with you, opening up to you even if it was only slightly. You were enjoying yourself, and you could tell that Jin was too. He was happiest you had seen him be since his rehabilitation had started.
Your enjoyment was cut short when you felt a sharp pain slice through your finger. You hissed and you lost your grip on the knife that clattered to the floor.
"Shit." You cursed quietly.
The sudden sound caught Seokjin's attention making him pause and snap his gaze over to you.
"Ouch," You winced out, biting your lip. Red blood pumped slowly up from the incision you had unwillingly made in your skin. You were so caught up in looking for a paper towel or tissue to notice the way Jin's eyes almost went hollow and murky looking. He went silent, eerily so, as if going into to a trance like state. "I'm just gonna find a plaster for this Jin, I'll be right back."
Stopping the bleeding with your shirt, you walked off, not sparing Jin a second glance.
His fists clenched and nostril's flared and his face remained in a struggled expression of concentration.
Seeing the fresh blood bloom from your cut sent a strange uneasy feeling through Jin. The rich redness sent his mind a step back, back into a darkness that he so desperately wanted to get away from.
Flashes of when he had been possessed by that thing wretched around his mind and caused him to recoil. Jin winced as a headache began to pound against his skull.
You jogged to your office to grab your med kit (cursing this place for not putting one in the kitchen) spotting a familiar face standing over your desk.
"Jackson? What are you doing here?"
He swivelled round in shock and stuffed something very suspiciously behind his back and under his jacket. At that moment you weren't bothered as to what he might have been doing and instead of asking quickly found your medical kit to clean and wrap up your wound.
"Ah! Just came looking for you! I need to speak to you about something." He said, eyes flashing in concern once he spotted the redness that stained your hand. "What happened!?"
"Oh, just a cooking accident, nothing major though it is pretty deep now that I look at it." You replied in a collected manner as you wrapped up your hand. "Also, can it wait? I'm with a patient at the moment." You were quick to avoid his response as you had to get back to Jin quickly and left for the kitchen, not realising that Jackson was on your heels.
You came back to the kitchen to see Jin clutching his head with one hand, eyes shut tight, his other hand in a fist.
"Seokjin? Are you ok?" You asked striding up to him quickly, face full of worry.
Jin's eyes shot open and zeroed in on the red that seeped through your bandage. He took a step back bumping into the counter behind him.
"Jin? Are you...Are you afraid of blood?" You asked cautiously, lifting your bandaged hand up slightly.
"Get that out of my sight!" He hissed throwing down his utensils and storming off in the direction of his room.
"Yah!" Jackson yelled at the retreating patient, not liking how he responded to you one bit.
You stood there in bewilderment, not sure of what to do. Of course, Jin has always been difficult, but he had never acted out as much as he had just done. All you could think of was the fear that was evident in his eyes.
There was nothing in his records about having a blood phobia.
"I know hes in rehab at the moment but c'mon now that wasn't cool." Jackson said, tidying some of the mess up. "There was no need to speak to you like that." He muttered.
"Its fine." You sighed, letting your injured hand drop to your side. "What did you need to speak to me about, Jackson?"
His face lit up and he grinned. "I came to find you because I missed you of course!"
You gave Jackson the stink eye and turned your back on the man.
"Ok ok! Sorry! I came because as embarrassing as it is to admit I really need your help with a case that I started. I know its hard to believe as I am pretty amazing at my job."
You eyed him suspiciously. "What case?" As far as you knew, Jackson was meant to be assisting you on your cases. Mr Bang hadn't given out any new ones. He shifted under your gaze, eyes dancing about the room.
"Um, I may or may not have received a phone call from the morgue that is connected directly with one of your cases." He muttered sheepishly.
"You went through my drawer and meddled with my files!?" You growled, shoving past him out of the kitchen, stomping through the hallways.
Jackson's hands shot up in defence. "Only because I was concerned with that pile of cases on your desk! I wanted to help!" Jackson argued, never raising his voice but kept an ounce of sternness. "I don't agree with the amount that 'big man' Bang has assigned you with. So I thought I would try and do it myself, but I'm struggling..."
"That doesn't give you the right to just open up one of my cases and start working on it! I decide whether I'm fit to take on something or not."
"I know, but I'm not going to apologise because I only want to help. Please let me." Jackson let out, a sigh heaving through his chest.
You frowned at him, not liking the way he handled this. You were sure to put a lock on your office door later.
"Well you've already started on it, we can't go back now." You grunted. "Whats the problem?"
"I've hit a brick wall. The nurse's body that was brought into the morgue recently died not abnormally per say but was possibly murdered by the victim in this case file. ," Jackson sighed. He looked at you will his tell-tale puppy eyes. "Please (Y/n)! You're a natural at this stuff, you have a gift I'm telling you!" He begged, hands clasped together in a prayer. Your frown deepened. You knew exactly what he was referring to by gift and you didn't like it one bit.
A gift? More of a curse to be honest.
"You want to go to the morgue and have a look at this body and you want me to do that!?Jackson, it's not just something I can do as easily as blinking, it doesn't always work. Plus I I don't like to take advantage of it, you know what happened last time." You spoke softly, as if the topic of the conversation was taboo.
First he invites himself into your office, steals one of your files and now hes asking you this!? This man was pushing it.
Jackson's eyes changed into ones of pity, making you scowl at him.
"(Y/n) please, I'll make sure nothing bad happens this time, I'll protect you!"
You stared the older male down with narrowed eyes and a tight lipped mouth. "Jackson, no!"
"When have I ever let you down, (Y/n)?" He asked softly. "You know that Yugyeom and I would never let anything happen to you."
That was true. Never once had your trust in your partners wavered. They always had your back, and you had theirs.
A sigh of frustration passed your lips and you looked back at Jackson and at his pitiful expression, a baby like pout and begging eyes staring at you like you took away his favourite toy, you finally caved. "Fine. But on one condition. Don't ask me again, and figure it out yourself next time." You were way too soft on people.
"Thank you! I'll make it up to you, I swear!"
"Just don't make me regret this. To the morgue then."
You were so going to regret this...
You looked back at the messy kitchen counters and at the exit Jin had left from, knowing to give him some space for the time being. You would check up on him once you returned from the morgue.
JUNG HOSEOK
AGE: 24
GENDER: Male
CASE: Possession
EXTRA DETAILS: Suffers greatly from Insomnia, drug addiction and Munchausen's syndrome
This has been brought to our attention from a source who wishes to keep themselves unidentified, from escalated paranormal activity from the death of one of the nurses at the Wings Psychiatric Hospital
You flipped through the file suspected to be connected with the murder of the nurse you were off to the morgue to inspect.
You and Jackson arrived at the front desk and waited there to be greeted.
"So this woman was a nurse at Wings Psychiatric Hospital?"
"That seems to be the case." Jackson said looking around his surroundings.
"Jackson, good to see you." The man who greeted you had the face of an angel, skin smooth and flawless and pale. Perfect to be an undertaker.
"You too Marky!" The man's face scrunched up in displeasure at the nickname. "This is (Y/n). Shes the head of this case, although I started it alone." The man turned his attention to you and offered a welcome smile.
"Hello, I'm Mark. I'm the undertaker at this morgue. Nice to meet you."
"Likewise." You replied just as friendly.
After your short and sweet introductions, Mark took you both through the cold atmosphere of the morgue and into the rooms were the bodies were kept.
The shapes of bodies covered by white sheets made your stomach clench and make you feel uneasy. Of course you had seen dead people before, plenty in fact, but it didn't make it any easier.
At the other end of the room you spotted a boy on a chair, chewing innocently on a candy bar. His blonde bangs fell slightly over his eyes which made you curious of them.
"That's Kim Taehyung, my new apprentice." Mark said as he noticed your interest in the assistant. You looked at Mark startled from being caught in your gawking act, then recovered quickly.
"An apprentice...?" You said looking back at the boy who now had his eyes on you. What boy his age would want to work with decaying corpses?
Underneath his blonde tresses you could make out a pair of gorgeous dark brown eyes, staring right at you.
You gave him a small smile and waved slightly in greeting.
He only stared for a minute causing you to become slightly uncomfortable, before a wide grin spread out on his face. His eyes held childish glee, yet his features seemed so handsome and mature.
"Kim, what have I said about bringing food in here?" Mark's voice was stern as he scolded the younger boy.
Taehyung gave a sheepish grin before wrapping the candy bar back up and stuffing it back into his pocket. He stood up and walked over with a skip in his step. You hadn't expected someone who worked in a morgue to be so...chipper. You gave him an odd look but smiled nonetheless when he came to a stop in front of you.
"I'm Kim Taehyung, Miss Pretty Eyes." He greeted warmly, mischief sparkling in his dark orbs. The blonde extended his hand to you, which you gladly accepted. You rose a brow at him questioningly.
"That's not my name, but thanks I guess..."
However the warmness of his greeting disappeared the second your skin came into contact with his.
Cold. Ice cold.
His hand was like a corpse.
The shock must have be evident of your face when the men around you frowned and stared in confusion, Jackson more concerned. You hadn't realised you had been clenching onto Taehyung's hand for a bit too long, when a cough came from Jackson beside you, snapping you from your trance.
Taehyung had an unreadable look on his face once you tugged your hand back rather quickly.
"So, um, shall we get down to business?" You began awkwardly.
Mark opened a metal drawer slide revealing a motionless body wrapped in a black bag. That queasy feeling resurfaced in your stomach, but you ignored it best you could. Only because the shape of that dead body put thoughts in your head you wished to be rid of, almost like those thoughts were lingering back to your past.
However it was Taehyung who noticed the colour that drained from your cheeks once Mark unzipped the body bag.
You had to take a deep breath.
The woman's left cheek was completely slashed open stringy tendons snapped from her cheek bone, her throat littered with red and purple bruises, bruises that eerily looked like hand prints.
Mark seemed to guess what you were thinking and spoke, "I know what you're thinking, she died from a fall that snapped her neck in a bad way after being attacked like this."
"Fall?" You looked up at him in surprise.
"She supposedly fell down the stairs, and, that is where she was found..." Mark trailed off.
"But obviously that's not quite the case." Jackson supplied for you. Your eyes trailed over the markings on her sickly white neck, save the blossoming colour where the skin had been marked, and looked over at the angry red slash on her face.
"No DNA was found on her skin but her own which is why we can't find a suspect, other than the fact that we know the P.I.A had a case on someone from the hospital this woman worked at." Mark informed.
Jackson moved his gaze over to you. "So, wanna give your psychic thing a try?" Both Taehyung and Mark gave Jackson quizzical looks.
You shot the childish man a warning look, not appreciating his word choices. Already, you were regretting the whole thing and being too soft. Next time you promised yourself that wouldn't be the case.
"Psychic thing?" Taehyung piped up, tilting his head with the same characteristics of a puppy. You glanced at him shyly, slightly embarrassed. He only tilted his head cutely again in return.
"It's nothing, just something to, give me a hint of what happened." You say quietly, moving around the icy cold metal table to were one of the nurse's hands lay.
You ignored the intrigued stares sent your way while bringing your hand up to grasp the corpse's. You let out a shaky breath as you felt the utter cold and stiffness of the dead person's hand. You shivered. You closed your eyes and steadied your breathing, focused on in-taking and exhaling breaths. Your focus travelled down your arm and to the hand that held the woman's and you tapped into your wary 6th sense that would often fade from time to time.
You jolted as an image flashed behind your closed eyes, another following closely behind. You concentrated on trying to see the images more clearly.
The woman was running frantically down a grey hallway. For moments you thought you could feel her short breaths, her absolute panic.
The next image you saw was an unclear face, some features blurred with colour. Pale skin and messy dark brown locks falling over a set of dark eyes. The man smirked and his lips parted.
'I see you.'
You jumped back, fear shooting through your bones tearing your hand from the nurse's.
Jackson was quick to step by you, running a soothing hand down you shoulder.
"(Y/n)? You ok?"
"Yeah, yes...This place makes me uneasy, that's all." You lied through your teeth.
Jackson gave you a look that said you would be telling him everything once you got back to the facility.
You looked up to see Taehyung staring at you, expressionless, but with an unnerving hollowness in his deep eyes. Mark stood there with confusion on his features, glancing between Jackson and yourself searching for an answer.
"Thank you, Mark, Taehyung. We have what we need, we'll head back." Jackson stated, taking your arm gently and tugging you with.
"A-are you sure? Is that all?" Mark questioned, zipping the body bag up quickly and pushing the tray back in and chasing after you both in a hurry, leaving Taehyung behind in the cold room of dead bodies alone.
Even after you had left Taehyung had kept his gaze on the route you had taken to leave. Even a stupid person could see he was entranced, though he wasn't too sure why. He'd hoped you would come by again, sooner rather than later. He knew that your work would also bring you to his work more times than not.
He was confused as to why an innocent and fairly pretty girl like yourself would take up this kind of career in the prime of your life.
Why hadn't you gone into fashion design or photography or film making, or even science etc? Anything other than the horrific experiences this job would bring you. You hadn't taken a leap and gone to a good uni and gain friends like a girl of your age was supposed to. It just didn't seem right to Taehyung and he was curious as to why. So curious, about you, about the way you connected with the nurse's body. You were definitely unique.
And for once, he was more curious about something other than
dead bodies...
And it rattled him.
