Chapter 32 - Little Minds (ii)
⚠️Trigger warning for this chapter⚠️
A/N: Just to forewarn you before reading, this chapter is disturbing and might be triggering to some, please be mature about it ^^'
'Hey girl, open the walls, play with your dolls. We'll be a perfect family'
'Everyone thinks that we're perfect,
please don't let them look through the curtains.'
- - -
The drawing was mostly black, the figure entirely coloured in, just as Lisa had described. 'The Shadow Man'. She had left two white holes where the eyes would be, its head tilted ever so slightly to the side on a long neck like it was mocking you.
The rest of the picture had what looked to be her toys scattered about her bedroom floor, a unicorn rocking horse, lots of teddies and plushies, a few dolls, and a doll house.
Another thing that had you wondering was the four sets of possible eyes dotted beneath the drawing of Lisa's bed. She had only mentioned there being one 'Shadow man'...
From what Lisa had said you remembered her saying the 'shadow man' was able to touch her, sending a lightbulb going off in your head. Was this thing a poltergeist? They were usually the only spirits that could make physical contact with things in the living realm.
You stood, looking at the drawing a minute longer before carefully folding the paper and sliding it into your bag with your other essentials needed for the case.
You left your office to bring Jungkook from his room down to the foyer where Yugyeom would be waiting outside with the van. You knew you couldn't just leave without Jungkook. You had promised to take him with you, and you couldn't go back on your word. You couldn't have him feeling sad and confused, thinking that you didn't want to spend time with him.
Yugyeom drove you and Jungkook to your destination in the van shortly after. He too had been sceptical about Jungkook coming along for the case but you had assured him everything would be fine.
The Manoban's home was an average family house. Two bedrooms on the upper floor, a kitchen, dining room, lounge, one bathroom on each floor and a basement. Mr and Mrs Manoban had welcomed the three of you in warmly, but something bothered you the moment you stepped foot into the threshold of the house.
Everything seemed in place, homey and normal. Maybe a bit too normal.
You eyed the family photo stuck in the frame on the wall, Mrs Manoban holding little Lisa's hand and Mr Manoban with his arm around Lisa's shoulders. Unlike her parents, Lisa wasn't smiling in the photo. If anything she looked tense. You supposed she was in that stage where she felt awkward having her picture taken.
"Well this is our home. I'd say to make yourself feel comfortable but as we spoke about the other day, our home may be haunted."
Something brushed up against your leg upon entering the home and you looked down to see a white ragdoll cat rubbing its face up against you.
"Ah! Forgive us, that's one of Lisa's cats, Lily. We forgot to mention to you. Are you alright with them?"
You nodded, easing the couple's worry as you bent down to pet the soft, long haired feline. Jungkook couldn't help but feel bitterly as he watched you stroke the animal fondly, a small smile playing on your lips.
"She has four, Lily, Luca, Leo and Louis," Mrs Manoban said with a friendly smile.
Four...
Lisa had drawn four sets of eyes in her picture.
"We got them for her so she wouldn't feel lonely, being an only child and all." Mr Manoban chuckled awkwardly. You nodded, glancing around your surroundings to get a better view of the house. Nothing had felt eerie once you had stepped in so far.
You looked back down at Lily whose fluffy fur lined body began to rumble from her loud purring. Animals had a good sense of the supernatural and would get anxious whenever there was something loitering in the area. That meant it was a sort of bonus for you to have four cats hanging around the house. You would have to keep an eye out for them.
"Do you mind if I take a look around?" you asked.
"Of course not. Please, feel free. Lisa is in school at the moment."
"Thank you." You turned to Yugyeom and nodded, signalling he could go and wait in the van outside for the time being. You would call him if you and Jungkook found yourselves at a brick wall.
You had Jungkook follow you with the EMF metre as you felt your way along the walls of the house, feeling the creases, cracks and inconsistent indents and breathing through your nose focusing on any changes in the house.
The house remined Jungkook of his home and strangely it didn't make him feel like he wanted to go back. With this in mind, his gaze fell on you.
Instead of watching if the dial on the metre that he held had shifted, he was watching you in pure interest, finding his attention chained to your form in front of him as you moved throughout the house. His eyes trailed down your hair, to the soft curve of your neck, to your shoulder, down your arm, to your delicate looking wrist and to your fingers.
The other hand that wasn't holding the metre that dangled by his side fidgeted, and made a small movement of grasping at air, as if trying to feel a ghost like version of your hand in his own.
His optics continued their descent, and traced the shape of your hips and to your thighs, a flush rising up his cheeks as he realised where he was looking, yet carried on taking in your legs and down to your ankles and shoe covered feet.
Jungkook couldn't help it. He was enamoured with each part of you.
"Downstairs seems to be clear-" your voice snapped him from his daze, "shall we continue upstairs?" you asked, which was more of a question of if he was getting on ok with the EMF metre.
"Yeah," he responded slightly distantly.
The two of you headed up the stairs, Jungkook fighting against the urge to lose himself in staring at your form again.
The next rooms were clear, the bathroom and the master bedroom. No sign of the EMF shifting or a cold spot to walk through and the house was warm even without the heaters on.
However, there was one other room to check. You had left Lisa's room for last.
You entered her room with Jungkook behind, seeing that the room was set out just like her drawing. The unicorn rocking horse in the centre, the doll house sat still in the corner, tiny windows dark hiding the inside from sight.
'"he lives under my bed-"' Lisa's voice hissed like a sudden gust of wind though your mind, raising the hairs on the back of your neck.
You couched to the floor on your knees, ducking down to see under the bed. Something flashed behind you eyes, the memory of the time back at the asylum when that thing had grinned at you from under the bed while gripping the cord of your talisman. You shivered. Fortunately, there was nothing under this bed. You pictured the four sets of eyes of the cats blinking back at you even though they weren't there.
'"and in the wardrobe-"' she whispered again in your ears alone.
You got up, your knees clicking as you stood and moved over to the wardrobe.
The doors opened with a creak revealing a rack of small child clothes and a neat line of shoes at the bottom. You couldn't help but mentally not the closet was large enough to fit a person at full height.
'"and sometimes in the kitchen."'
The kitchen had been clean of anything you were looking for. So what were you missing?
The other day on the case you took on with Taehyung, tracing your fingers over a solid object had granted you with a vision. You were still confused about that incident trying to piece together why your gift had been triggered over touching a lifeless flat surface. In the past it had only ever worked with skin to skin contact with another living or...once living being.
Apart from the intense headache you received after the vision, it had been the director to solving the case in the end.
"Noona-" you jumped, swivelling round to face Jungkook who had appeared out of nowhere, with your hand placed over your quickened heart.
"Holy- You scared the shit out of me!" You scolded with a scowl on your face.
He giggled, his bunny like teeth showing in his grin. "Sorry, Noona."
You let out a breath, steadying your poor heart.
"It must be nice," Jungkook commented out of the blue, the look in his eyes unreadable and far off.
"What is?"
"Being an only child. Not having to fight with siblings over the favour of your parents," he answered absentmindedly as he glanced slowly around the room.
You couldn't help but feel that was an odd thing to say, but then in a way what he was saying wasn't so outrageous.
A ragdoll cat strolled into the room, tail high in the air and curled at the tip, one what had a slightly darker face than Lily's. You remembered that Mrs Manoban had gone off on a tangent about the cats breeds and their names. You assumed that this one must be Luca.
You held out your hand in hopes of beckoning the animal to you, wanting to run your fingers through the otherworldly soft fur. Luca leisurely stalked over with the swagger that cats usually have when they walk. Instead of stopping in front of you the cat prodded past and leapt onto Lisa's bed where he sat and stared at you, as if patiently waiting for something. His eyes shot through you like a dagger, pupils sharpening, a clear intelligence of something glinting within them.
You moved over to him, your heart picking up for some reason. You held out your hand and let Luca push his face into your palm.
Suddenly an array of very unwanted images flashed through your mind like an film reel, the more it went on, the more disturbing the images got. Abominable and horrific the visions were as a dark hand muffled her little sobs and screams in the night, while the other ran through her hair languidly. Fingers sliding into her teddy bear printed pjs. Massive hot hands groping in unwanted places. The visions did not relent as they continued to show you more of Lisa's situation. You could feel her kicks and struggles as if they were your own as you felt like you could feel those dark hands were sliding down your own body and the absolute fear they left behind, your heart pounding ferociously in your chest as you were showed the face of the shadow man from Luca's eyes, each time it happened.
It suddenly became hard to breathe as if there was something clogging up your throat. Jungkook's brow creased as he watched the colour drain from your face.
Now, you knew why there was no reading on the EMF metre. You knew why the house seemed so normal although at this very moment the family home was now a twisted horrific place tainted with the horror of what was happening to Lisa.
There was no ghost haunting the Manoban's family home. There was no paranormal activity to pick up.
Because the thing that was terrorising Lisa was a living, breathing human being.
"Oh my god..." you croaked out stumbling away from the cat causing it to jump away in fright.
"Noona? What's wrong?" Jungkook panicked at your horrified tone, frown pulling at his lips in worry. He watched you panic yourself feeling useless on what to do, his hands hovering in mid-air unsure what to do. How could he comfort you?
Your breaths came out short as you tried to contain your astonishment and revulsion. You shook you head and pushed your hands against your closed eyes in an attempt to rid yourself of what you saw.
"Noona?" Jungkook's wobbly voice floated into your ears was smothered, as if you were underwater. You worked on getting your breathing in check, calming yourself.
A dark look crossed over your features as your hands dropped to your sides, one that Jungkook was thrown off to see, and to him-
it was positively thrilling. It was so sudden it dissipated his earlier worry and had his blood pumping harder through the canals of his veins.
Placing on a stoic mask, you collected yourself together and walked down stairs calmly although there was a hurricane of emotions trying to break through your eyes.
You ran outside, muttering to the Manoban couple as you passed by about needing some air (which wasn't a total lie), gathering your bearings and trying to calm the thundering heart in your chest. You felt that you probably would have been sick if you had spent another minute in that house.
The police- you had to call the police right away.
You took out your phone, hands shaking slightly as you typed in a number. You didn't call the police. You couldn't. How could you explain that 'oh yeah, this father is molesting his daughter and I know this because I had a vision of it happening, but I don't have any evidence'. They would see you as a right lunatic.
You pictured Mr Manoban's face, feeling utter repulsion. He had the audacity to welcome you into the house with a smile on his face
Taking another deep breath, you pressed the call button, letting the phone ring. You weren't positive this was your best idea but at the current moment you weren't sure with what else to do.
The receiver picked up.
"Park speaking."
"Um hello. Its (Y/n)...From the P.I.A?" You did your best to control your wavering vocals, pacing on the sidewalk with jittery nerves. You weren't one hundred percent sure that Park would help, but it was the only thing you could think of.
"Ah! To what to I owe the pleasure of this call, darling?" his voice suddenly piping up.
"I...I need some help," you struggled to say. C'mon (Y/n) now is the time to swallow your pride. He said he would help after all.
"You're on one of your little cases for the P.I.A? How can I be of service to you?"
"Yah, this isn't time for jokes, this is serious," you said down the line, a hint of sharpness in your tone.
"Ahh sorry, I didn't mean to offend. What did you need from me specifically?" Somehow you could tell he was enjoying this.
You proceeded to explain the situation to him, leaving out the in depth details about Lisa that had you shuddering as you relived the moment in your head, but briefly managed to explain the important bits.
"I need the police and social services on this," you said surely.
"And I assume you're calling me because, they won't listen to you?"
"I-I...I don't have any evidence. I just know."
"Hmm, you do know how that must sound, dove," he hummed in a delicious tone that felt like velvet in your ears.
"I know I know. But I'm positive and as a therapist, I can clearly diagnose that that young girl has been continuously assaulted and traumatised. And...And I've seen something that confirmed my suspicions. Please, I don't care how, just get them here." You couldn't help the way your voice had come out slightly shaky at that point, from the horror of those visions replaying back in your mind. Plus the fact that the person at the end of the street still being in the same position unnerved you greatly. You had noticed them earlier when you arrived at the house, but thought nothing of it at the time.
"The police will ask for that report."
"You'll help then!?" You couldn't help the elevation in your voice.
You could just hear the amused smile in his voice. "Of course, I'll see what strings I can pull with the police. I'm invested in you after all."
You faltered, having an inkling of a feeling that there was a second meaning to that. He was talking about the P.I.A right?
"Thank you, thank you. This means a great deal to me," you told Jimin earnestly.
"My pleasure, dove. Take care."
As you ended the call happy it had gone well and feeling slightly relieved, you spot the same person in a black face mask facing your direction up the road across, eyes hidden in the shadow of their cap.
Usually, you wouldn't you wouldn't take any notice of other people going about their daily lives on the streets of Seoul. However this time you couldn't help but notice this person at the end of the road. Why did you notice them out of the other few people that walked by? Because this person seemed to be looking directly at you. From their build, you assumed them to be male.
With all that black they were wearing, he could have easily been the 'shadow man'. He wasn't though. Because Lisa's so called 'shadow man' was her own father.
You'd seen him before. You just knew it.
Was he following you?
He began walking casually in your direction. Paranoia gripped you which had you making a B-line for the van that was parked outside tha Manoban's home and got into the passenger seat next to Yugyeom who sent you a startled look.
Although there was a chance you were just being overly cautious/suspicious, you couldn't deny the uneasiness that trickled through your body when that man had started moving towards you. For a reason your couldn't place your finger on, there was something about that man, a threatening air around him. It had your gut just telling you something was wrong, wrong, wrong with him.
You felt safer sitting next to your friend, waiting for the police to arrive, in the company of someone you knew.
Finally hours later, the police came through the front door leading out a frustrated, regretful and shocked looking Mr. Manoban in handcuffs. He was shoved into one of the police cars along with Mrs Manoban who seemed to be in hysterics. A couple of social workers had accompanied the police, one carrying a folder and entering back into the house.
You hoped that Lisa wouldn't be too shocked when she got home. This was all a big lot to handle for a girl her age. But anything instead of living with that vile sorry excuse for a father any longer. Once again you felt the bile rise up in your throat. You dreaded writing the report later for this case not wanting to relive the experience.
You sat there still in a state of shock, trying to process the pieces together and push away the want of this whole situation to just be a nightmare to wake up from.
Poor Lisa...
Your heart reached out to her.
It turned out that there was no ghost at all, but a human. A disgusting, sick-minded, sorry excuse for a human-being, defiling an innocent child and inflicting large mental scars upon her inexperienced and developing mind.
It made you furious. To think that someone thought it was okay to do something like that. You felt sick to your stomach, and you felt that all too familiar feeling of wanting to throw up.
That anger surged up within you, your fists clenching hard enough that your nails bit into the the skin of your palms.
Jungkook had sat on the other side of you in the van, the worry that had been etched into his features melting to strange fascination. He almost seemed enamoured with the look of rage on your face.
It was scary and...
Kind of hot.
Honestly, for some reason he felt that any emotion you showed him he would enjoy and bask in, as long as it was because of him. He wanted to see every emotion cross your face, for his eyes only. And he knew for a daunting fact that he would feel a green snake of envy slither around his gut if anyone else were to witness your expressions, your personality or emotions, or even your body.
You were for him. He was sure of it.
You felt a hand reach for your own. You looked down to see Jungkook enclosing his hand over your own sharing his warmth with you in a way of comfort. You gratefully accepted clutching onto his hand, much to Jungkook's delight.
The ride home was silent.
You didn't say a word to Jungkook or Yugyeom as you got out of the car and briskly fled to your room for a hot shower, desperately wanting to scrub and let the scalding hot water burn away the non-existent dirt on your skin from being around that couple.
No dead spirit had ever terrified you as much as that case had. You could still feel hands running over your body like Lisa had and you shuddered.
You didn't leave your room again until nightfall, when your stomach at started to protest at you for not eating dinner.
You found yourself bending to your stomach's will and foraging through the fridge for something to fill your empty belly. It seemed as though everyone had retired to their rooms and gone to bed as you sat in the kitchen alone eating cold left overs, surprised that you still had an appetite.
Afterwards you left the kitchen and went to make sure all the lights were out before heading to your bed yourself, eyes sagging with tiredness. Guiltily, you were happy you hadn't run into anyone while you were out of your room, not in the mood for conversation at the current moment.
You reached the foyer down from the kitchen where you had spotted one of the lights still flickering on. Reaching the switch something had you pausing in your action.
The front door was wide open.
Why hadn't anyone locked it behind them, especially at this time?
You walked up to it, poking your head out into the late evening air. Sighing, you stepped back in closing the door with you.
The sound of a couple of steps came up dauntingly from behind you, closer than you expected especially when you had originally believed that you were alone.
You froze at a voice that skimmed over your skin like fallen leaves and entered your ears in greeting.
"Hello sweetheart."
Who?
You couldn't even turn to see the owner of the voice before without the ounce of a warning a blow to the back of your head had you lights out in the blink of an eye.
