Chapter 14 - Case ii

You felt your limbs become stiff as you took in the patient's features and felt a shiver shoot through your veins, turning them to ice.

He had the same face as the man in your vision back at the morgue.

'I see you.'

No, that wasn't possible. He couldn't have seen you because you were never there, it was a vision. However you remembered the way his eyes had locked solely on you. He wasn't looking past you or through you, he was looking at you. And the thought made you tremble.

You had to force your legs forward, your feet heavy as you proceeded into the room. Your body fought against your mind, not wanting to go anywhere near this man who looked so much like an angel.

You took in a deep breath, drawing forth your courage that had hidden itself away at the sight of this beautiful man.

Looks can be oh so deceiving.

"H-hi," you mentally kicked yourself for the stutter, "I'm guessing you're Hoseok? I'm (Y/n) its nice to meet you, I'll be doing the routine checks this evening, I hope you don't mind." His name felt unfamiliar on your tongue even though his was the case you had been following for a few days now. His name had been crawling around your brain for days.

"Have you got any restricted items in this room?"

An invisible weight was lifted off your shoulder's as you got a closer view of his face. No black eyes. But that didn't mean shit. Jungkook's eyes had been normal at first.

Hoseok merely gazed at you without a response with his mystifying dark orbs, taking in this new stranger who had entered his room.

It seemed that the hospital had hired some fresh meat. A cute little thing too. A naive little rabbit that had wondered into his den.

Hoseok let a lazy smile pull on his chapped pale lips.

"You're new," he finally commented in an airy voice, watching you step deeper into his room and the way your eyes flitted about looking for anything that was restricted. His small movements were swayed ever so slightly and his eyes were half open, in a dreamy sort of state. Had he been sedated?

It wouldn't be strange, it was nearing bedtime and you remembered that 'Hoseok' struggled with major insomnia.

You regarded him cautiously, hand instinctively reaching into the pocket your talisman resided in, giving you some form of comfort. It pulsed very lightly in your hand. "I am. Today is my first day."

Who am I speaking too? Hoseok or the other thing?

"Do you have anything in this room that you shouldn't have, Hoseok?" You asked again a little more firmly after his lack of response.

You considered the piles of books messily placed around the room (they were allowed if you remembered correctly) and there were toys...Toys that would generally be used by children a lot younger than he was.

A train set with a unconnected track lay idle in the corner, a small toddler sized over turned rocking horse with shiny black eyes peaked out at you from under the metal bed frame and odd pieces of chess and lego were scattered about the room.

Were patients usually permitted to have so much stuff in their room? There's no way they would allow one's room to be so messy and...and full of broken toys and rubbish!

This guy was a hoarder, that was for sure, meaning it may take some time to go through everything.

However what really caught your interest were the countless sweet and chocolate wrappers littered about the floor, and overflowing his trash basket in the corner.

What on earth?

"Perhaps, but that's for me to hide and you to find out." Helpful, very helpful.

As you inspected the room, you watched Hoseok in the corner of your eye, looking for any sign of a strange behaviour. It was difficult to discern however as he was in this hospital for the reason that he wasn't entirely normal. He only sat there on the bed relaxed and still.

Nothing, so far, and it swayed you off your course slightly. His room was chilly, but you couldn't tell if it was that type of cold, as the whole damn hospital was!

You started checking through the dresser, in which you found nothing to be restricted and moved on. You worked on picking up the wrappers as you looked through his things, hands becoming full quickly.

"You seem to have a big sweet-tooth," you spoke, trying to make some sort of conversation as you continuously felt his heavy gaze on your back, "And I assume you like to read too," eyeing the books.

You chucked the wrappers you collected near the trash making a mental note to come back and change the bin liner later.

You turned to see a flush of pink reach his pale cheeks at the mention of his sweet-tooth and noted the sudden shyness he showed.

"I can't help it..." he confessed with a sheepish expression and for a second you thought he looked rather cute all bashful like that.

"And, yes I do, I like reading. I had a friend that got me into it. My interest in books couldn't match his own though, he's the real book worm," the brunette mused, his eyes looking up to the ceiling as if he were reminiscing something.

Hoseok spoke to you like he knew you, like you were friends, whereas usually you would only exchange a few words with strangers you had just met. You didn't catch any hint of shyness in his voice apart from when you called him out on his sweet addiction. This whole situation threw you off, it was nothing like Jungkook's case. The thing that had possessed Jungkook had shown you its true colours right off the bat. Either Hoseok was in control of his own mind and the spirit was merely in a slumber...or he was messing with you.

You didn't like not knowing who you were speaking with. Maybe that's what you had to do, keep him talking...

"Do you have a favourite?" You asked suddenly.

He looked up at you with a questioning gaze.

"Book I mean, a favourite book. You have so many I figured you must have one you like more...?"

He glanced at the small towers, eyes trailing along the covers and spines.

Some of them were children's books. The Greedy Python by Richard Buckley, The Cat from Hunger Mountain by Ed Young, The Cloud Spinner by Michael Catchpool, The Very Greedy Bee and The Pearl by John Steinbeck were the ones in full view. All of them very different, but each told the same story.

"I like them all, I've read all of them more than once. But I would have to say my favourite is The Cloud Spinner."

"I loved that book as a child!" You exclaimed excitedly, forgetting about ghosts and cases for a second, your unease from earlier dissipating. You reached down and plucked the children's book from the pile, smiling down at it fondly as you turned closer to the slightly dazed male.

Out of the blue Hoseok began to fret and grabbed the book from your hands quickly.

"This one is mine though..."

Had he thought you were going to take it? Or was he just possessive over his belongings?

"I-I see...Sorry I didn't mean to touch whats not mine," you apologised instantly feeling out of place and a little awkward.

Hoseok immediately noticed his mistake, the smile dropping off your face not sitting right with him. You had seemed to glow all of a sudden when you had picked up his book.

"But! Perhaps we can read it tomorrow....Together?"

Reading a children's book?

You began to pity him. You understood that places like this could get very lonely for its occupants and frustrating as they weren't allowed out into the world until they were deemed fixed or cured. And that was the problem with mental illnesses, you couldn't just wave a wand and wish it away. Time was the best healer. Time and support from others.

"Maybe, if I have some spare time." At that he gave you a smile that looked too innocent to belong to a possessed man. You moved over to the top of his bed to check under the pillows where things could easily be hidden, and then under the bed, where the rocking horse's dead gaze seemed to follow your movements.

You stood up dusting yourself off before looking over the edge of the bed near the window.

"You talk more than the others too...Its nice," Hoseok said watching you lean towards the bars of the window.

"What do you mean? Do the other nurses not speak to you." You questioned, taking a look outside the window which had full view of the front courtyard and gates, in front of which you noticed a very fancy car was parked. Rich family visitors? Not at this hour it couldn't be...

He shrugged and turned his gaze away. "No, they come in do their jobs and leave, all while usually ignoring me. They seem to do that to all of us really..."

"I'm sorry to hear that. You can talk to me whenever if it will make you feel any better..." you offered sympathetically. "Right, I think I'm done here..." But before you moved away, something in the corner of your eye stopped you. Near the top right corner of the window on the plaster, something black and murky grew like a moss, that seemed to have grown on the wall. A black sort of mould. Just like the one you had spotted in Jungkook's room at his mother's house.

You tore your sight away from it only to catch Hoseok's direct stare on you. It planted an unnerving feeling deep in your gut.

"...Have a good night, Hoseok," you said nervously.

You turned to leave, relief flooding through you that you could finally step out of Hoseok's room.

"Not many people speak to me," you heard him say behind you, still sitting on the bed, "not even my own sister. But of course," His eyes slid over to you, a sly smirk dancing on his lips, "you already knew that, didn't you (Y/n)?"

Your heart stopped for a beat. It had you immediately wondering if you had heard him correctly. The atmosphere in the room dropped into something sinister, something on the verge of suffocating.

Slowly turning round to look at him, you saw that Hoseok was acting nonchalant. He wasn't even facing you and that made you doubt yourself, that you had imagined it. No black eyes staring back at you and the air lifted as if nothing had changed. Had you really imagined that?

It only kicked you into gear to get out quicker, not wanting to find out whether you brain had made it up.

In your haste, shutting the door and turning, you almost smacked right into a man in a white doctors coat, halting in your step before you could.

"Sorry, I didn't see you there," you apologised with a small bow. It was a rather attractive looking doctor you had run into as you studied his face.

"Ah a newbie! Welcome to Wings Psychiatric Hospital," he greeted after overcoming is surprise at your sudden appearance. He stuck his hand out for you to shake. "My name is Kim Taehyung, head doctor of this facility. Nice to meet you." Dr. Kim's words seemed fake, laced with counterfeit kindness that didn't seem to reach his eyes. Kim Taehyung? He was not the Kim Taehyung you knew at least...

This man roughly the same height, but looked slightly older, with dark locks and a narrowness to his face.

Your attention on the doctor didn't last long however, as it was quickly drawn to the man standing beside him. A man who had your breath caught in your lungs.

Smart black suit, styled silver hair, gorgeous face, sharp eyes and an amused look directed towards you as you stood like a deer in headlights before him.

Park freaking Jimin.

What the hell was he doing here? And why now of all days?

You suddenly felt very small in front of those two men, like they were lions, and you were nothing but a measly lamb. You had felt the same feeling in Hoseok's presence.

No, you wouldn't be a lamb. You had to stand up for yourself. So you looked right back at Jimin, almost on the verge of defiance, against what, you didn't know yet.

"Ah, yes. We've been honoured with a visit by Mr. Park here for an inspection," Dr. Kim began noticing your shock at the man next to him. "He has been generous enough to donate a large sum of money towards the hospital."

Then it just occurred to you.

Oh God, oh no. Would he remember you? Is he gonna think you were a stalker? Going so far as to get a job at the hospital he owned. That couldn't be more wrong, that's not why you were here!

Wait-

He wouldn't remember a girl who bumped into him at a coffee house there's no-

"You're the one I bumped into at the coffee house." In that moment you wanted more than anything to shrink into the ground and disappear. You were in awe that Park Jimin himself remembered a stranger he had barely conversed with at a coffee house.

You were positive that there were many other faces of people throwing themselves at him for his attention yet he decided that he would remember you?

"U-uh um yes! That was me, I apologise again." You wanted to get over with this quickly so could could get away from his line of sight. You didn't like the way Jimin was staring at you, like he was studying you closely.

"No need, don't worry that's all behind us, sweetheart. Let's start over shall we?" His eyes crinkled with a sweet smile.

Your throat bobbed with a gulp, an a subtle movement that did not go unnoticed. Had he actually just called you sweetheart? Even Dr. Kim's eyes widened a fraction, eyebrows raised at his forwardness. Jimin hadn't taken any interest in any of his other employees, had walked by each of them like they weren't there.

"My name is Park Jimin. You may call me Jimin. It's lovely to meet you,"

As Jimin held his hand out to you you felt reluctant to take it in your own. The faint memory of your talisman pulsing the last time you were near him resurfacing. It made you want to reach your hand into your pocket to see if it was doing the same thing now.

"Likewise. I'm (Y/n)."

Hesitantly, you raised your hand to his. His hand was warm to the touch, meaning yours must have been colder to his. Jimin's eyelids blinked slowly, and if you hadn't known any better you would have thought it looked like he was in some sort of bliss.

You felt his fingers squeeze your hand before letting go, his smile growing wider and childlike.

Dr. Kim coughed from the side, Jimin's smile falling slightly as he glanced over to the doctor.

"We, should uh, continue sir. If you want to finish the tour before settling in for the night,"

"Of course. I'll see you round, (Y/n)," Jimin said, his voice velvet in your eardrums, a sound that felt like a siren's melody.

You nodded, not being able to find your voice and watched them leave down the hallway, footsteps echoing on the torn up walls.

You scurried away quickly, having had enough of this place already, heading straight to the East Wing without grabbing yourself any dinner.

You hadn't an appetite anyway.

You had gone to Jackson's room first, the lucky sod having been given a room to himself.

"Man, you look exhausted, (Y/n). We barely even worked a full day." Jackson had said sending you a worried expression.

You regarded him with an annoyed look, ignoring his words and bringing up a topic of your own.

"So I found Hoseok," you began, earning his undivided attention. "Nothing." Jackson's eyebrows furrowed. "At least, nothing seemed wrong with him, but we both know spirits can hide and trick you into a false sense of comfort."

"Ok...Anything else?"

"Yeah..." you muttered, teeth pressing into your lower lip while looking down at your feet. "There was the same black mould when Yugyeom and I went back to Jungkook's house that I missed the first time we were there...I'm not sure what it is, or what it could mean, but I saw it in Hoseok's room too..."

"Hmm...There's not much we can do without knowing what it is, all I can say for now is to avoid it. Don't touch it, but keep an eye if it looks like its growing. I'm a little bit stumped on that one. I'll give the boss man a call to see if he has anything in those books of his," Jackson proposed. There was a moment of silence as Jackson surveyed your slightly swaying form, the bags that were starting to form under your eyes.

"Gosh (Y/n) you look out for the count. Don't worry about that now, we'll talk more tomorrow. Go get some sleep. Have you eaten?"

"...No, but I don't feel like I can eat anything at the moment," you replied softly. Jackson frowned.

"I'll let you off this time, but don't make it a habit. I want to see you at breakfast bright and early tomorrow with a plate stuffed with food," he insisted as he got up and walked over to you, bringing you into a bear hug. You sighed into it, bringing your arms up around his back.

"Thank you, Jackson."

You suddenly felt the weight of the day lift off your shoulders, tiredness washing through you as you walked off back to the room you would be staying in.

You stopped before opening the door, looking down at the small object that sat on the floor.

Fuzzy, pink, round and ripe. A peach.

You picked up the soft fruit and turned it around in your hand examining it, your mind wondering back to the old woman who had been standing by the peach tree earlier that day.

Its sweet smell entered your nostrils, beckoning you to sink your teeth into its soft flesh.

Maybe tomorrow, I'm not hungry right now...But it is a little odd that there was a peach sitting outside of my door.

As you entered your shared room, you immediately spotted the woman who sat up against her pillow on the top bunk, large circular glasses resting on her delicate nose as she read a book. She was pretty and had that kind of beauty that looked like she couldn't care less about.

Her eyes flickered over at your arrival for a split second before they returned to the page she was on.

"Hi, I'm Moon Byulyi. I go by Moonbyul. You?" This girl's personality was short and straight to the point. You could tell immediately that she was someone who took no shit from others.

"(L/n) (Y/n), I hope we can get along," you greeted with a tired smile. She nodded in reply. Not the talkative type then?

You showered, brushed your teeth and got into your night clothes before getting into bed, the duvet and sheets doused in an unfamiliar cheap laundry detergent smell that you would have to get used to.

Sighing, you got into a comfortable position, your body relaxing under the covers, a shifting sound coming from above you signalling that your roommate was doing the same.

Please, please let me have a good nights sleep...

Settling into a new place was always hard, but you felt that settling here would almost be impossible. You clung to the small comfort that you wouldn't be staying here for very long, or at least you hoped.

As you finally felt yourself drifting off you could have sworn in your drowsiness that there had been a pair of shadows like feet that stood behind the door, until they shifted away, your vision going black.

You passed it off as paranoia. A person's brain had a talent when it came to tricking you as you floated between the veil of wake and sleep.

Haha! Ya'll thought Dr. Kim was Namjoon ha, PSYCHE! I knew that would get you. (Just an fyi J.seph's real name is in fact Kim Taehyung for those of you wondering) -Rikki
