Chapter 13 - Case ii
This asylum was cursed. You could tell that much by standing before the gigantic building looming over you, just outside its front iron gates.
Gates to hell.
Gates that obviously hadn't been rejuvenated in years much like the building in front of you that looked to be standing on its last legs.
"This looks cosy," Jackson commented nonchalantly, leading the way through the large courtyard towards the entrance of the building.
"Sure does," you hummed in agreement.
"You didn't bring the file, did you?" Jackson asked suddenly.
"Of course not Jackson. What do you think would happen if they found it? We'd be in some right shit!" You said confused that he would even ask. "I remember most of Hoseok's file anyway so don't worry."
Just imagine that, if someone at the hospital found that file. The questions, and the trouble you would be in...
You felt completely out of your comfort zone as you walked side by side, very aware of the dozens of eyes following you pair causing an unfamiliar chill in your bones.
The two of you proceeded to the double doors of the entrance, passing by a few orderlies and patients that got their fresh air in the courtyard, some of them pacing, some playing and some just sitting quietly to themselves on the benches. However your eyes were drawn to one patient in particular. An old woman, standing by the peach tree that grew in the middle of the courtyard. Her pockets were full and lumpy, stuffed with fallen peaches, her wrinkled hands cupping a few more. And she stared, stared right at you, as you and Jackson walked by. There was an empty look in her hollow eyes as they followed your form all the way to the entrance of the hospital, until you disappeared behind the doors.
"I really hope we can deal with this without too many complications," Jackson muttered mindlessly. You nodded. It was similar to what you had told the others back at the facility, and it made you think back to the day before when the others found out you where you were going.
"(Y/n)! You're hurt!" Jungkook had gasped, worry evident on his boyishly handsome features.
"I'm fine, Kook. Its just a scratch, nothing to worry about." Although when saying that the wound had throbbed like it knew that had been a lie. It stung like a bitch and it hurt. You just hoped to fuck that you hadn't got it infected with your measly attempt at bandaging it up.
You were relieved Jin hadn't been around remembering his reaction the last time you had hurt yourself.
"But where are you going? For how long? And when can I see you?" You realised from the barrage of questions from Jungkook that the boy was confused and desperately seeking answers, almost like he was unsettled by something. Your absence?
It surprised you how quickly one could form an attachment for another. You found it sweet in a weird way that Jungkook was fretting over you.
"I have another case to take care of with Jackson. We'll try to wrap it up as quickly as possible but it may take a week or so," you confessed.
"Can I come with?" His plea was so unexpected and it made you do a double take.
"I'm sorry Jungkook, but no. You have to focus on getting better ok?"
He kept his gaze on the ground, mouth pulled into a deep frown.
"Jungkook-" you were quickly cut off as you were tugged into a strong embrace. The boy squeezed your slightly smaller frame, like you would disappear if he let go. His breath was loud in your ear and his cheek felt warm and soft against your own. You felt his fingers grip the clothing behind your back and listened to him sigh in content.
"Be careful, noona. And come back to me."
"...I will."
That had been an odd exchange that seemed to linger in your mind like a mist but you just assumed that the boy had grown to like you as his friend that got him out of a terrible situation.
Yeah keep telling yourself that.
'"And come back to me."' Why had he phrased it like that? You rubbed the freshly healing cut on your arm absentmindedly.
You had also received a text from Soyeon, asking- no, ordering you to be careful. In a way you liked the idea of having a psychic friend to warn you about every job you took. You found it a little heartwarming and slightly funny, you could get used to it.
The text had also led your thoughts back to when you had briefly encountered Dawon, Hoseok's sister. She still hadn't contacted you much to your disappointment, your phone being clear of messages from an unknown number each time you checked it. You were eagerly waiting for Dawon to say something, but you knew there was a chance she wouldn't.
You elbowed the fidgeting man beside you earning a soft hiss from the taller male as you waited outside an office to be interviewed.
"Be professional," you whispered without looking at him.
Jackson looked at you in mock shock, "I'm always professional!"
The interviews went smoothly and from what you gathered by listening to the way your interviewers spoke, they seemed desperate. It made you wonder if they were ready to employ just about anyone off the street.
You had taken the interview for the general nursing staff, and Jackson an Orderly.
After two long assessments, Jackson and yourself passed the interviews with flying colours and they were eager to start your induction on the same day. In fact they had you suited up in uniforms and thrust handbooks into your arms by midday. Which brought you to the tour.
You carefully surveyed the environment as Jackson went to call Yugyeom to bring your readily packed bags you had both left back at the facility. You hadn't brought them with in case you hadn't got the jobs, but you guessed there hadn't been any danger of that happening.
They led you to the East wing of the hospital that held living arrangements for the employees that only left at the weekends to see their families. There were shared rooms that were separated between male and female. Each room was furnished with bunk-beds, dressers and on-suite bathrooms.
It wasn't as bad as you thought it would be as you were only sharing with one other nurse who seemed to have already claimed the top bunk. You assumed she already worked here by the looks of things, yet she wasn't currently around to be introduced too.
The older lady who offered to take the two of you around explained everything in detail.
Mornings started at 6:30am, for employees to grab a quick breakfast to start the day. Then at 7:00am they were to bring round medication to each patient on their assigned floor and assess there well being and health with charts.
Nurses and guards all take part in the room searches that take place each day in the evening at 8:00pm just before the patient's curfew for bedtime. If you were to find anything restricted, you must confiscate the item/s and report it to the head of staff.
There was a large common room, where patients are allowed to mingle and relax with magazines, books, board games and paper and crayons, along with the courtyard outside for the patients to get some fresh air though they were to be monitored at all times.
"This place gives me the creeps," Jackson shuddered, large hands shoved deep in his pockets, his shoulders hunched as if to get away from the chilly air as you walked side by side.
"You're telling me. I've been to a psychiatric hospital before and it was nothing like this. This is some crazy 1900's shit, nothing's new. I'd go so far as to say this isn't a hospital for regular people with mental illnesses but for the criminally insane..."
Jackson nodded in agreement.
The grey wall paint was crumbling , the doors were old and rusting and definitely needed new hinges that didn't squeal as they opened and there was a constant stagnant smell that hung in the air every corner you turned, and ironically, every now and then the lights would flicker on and off. Good thing it was the middle of the day, otherwise this place would be a nightmare to walk around being plunged in darkness every so often.
"Patients are allowed to return to their rooms whenever they like, so long as they are escorted and their doors locked, so we don't have any wondering patients getting lost or into any trouble. However they must come out at the specific times for breakfast, lunch and dinner. 8pm is the curfew and during this time you must check that all your assigned patients are in their respective rooms before conducting the room searches." Your elderly tour guide drawled on as he led you through the facility. She looked exhausted, as well as all the other staff you had encountered on your short tour. You couldn't blame them, the hospital was badly understaffed and it looked as though employees were handling a lot more tasks than what was in their payroll.
You passed by an array of office looking doors with doctor's names labelled on each one. One name in particular stood out to you, causing you to slow your pace.
"Ah, that's Dr. Kim's office. He is the head doctor of this hospital and is very busy so do not disturb him with trivial matters. I'm sure there will come a time for you to be formally introduced." The lady said, noticing your interest.
As you continued on, you reached the West Wing, the part of the hospital where patient's rooms were.
The elderly lady stopped and turned towards the two of you.
"You my boy will be stationed on the floor above this one, but you are permitted to leave you post if a specific floor needs more help. And you," she said turning to point at your still form with a crooked finger, "are responsible for looking after the patients on this floor."
You and Jackson shared an uneasy glance. Although you could enter any floor, your positions and tasks were different. You would be separated which put a sinking feeling in your stomach.
Fantastic.
You would have to try and work around this.
The rest of the tour ended with the older lady showing you to the kitchen where you would help out with preparing meals and the laundry room for washing patient's clothing and bed-sheets.
It was around 6pm when the tour had ended and you and Jackson went to pick up your things from Yugyeom who had waited at the front gates in the van, slipping in some vitals for an exorcism if it came to it, like a marker for the warding symbols, the incantation book, lighters, salt etc.
"Are you sure you're alright to be doing this?" Yugyeom suddenly asked, a timidness in his voice. You looked up at him with a slight jerk as if surprised by the question, why you were surprised you weren't sure, as everyone had been asking you that after your last exorcism.
You let out a frustrated sigh, "You guys are treating me like I've lost an arm! I'm fine! I promise the second things start to turn south we'll leave."
It only frustrated you more when you caught the two boys exchanging an unsure glance.
"I'm sorry, (Y/n). Its just I've never seen something like that happen. Never seen someone drop to the floor like that. For a moment..." Yugyeom trailed off, avoiding your gaze, "For a moment I thought you were-"
"That's ok Yugyeom, you don't need to elaborate," Jackson butted in swinging an arm round his friend's shoulder, "What we're saying (Y/n) is we care about you, so obviously we're going to worry, and I know we've asked a dozen times already."
Your shoulder's slumped in defeat. You couldn't stay angry at the two. You understood how they felt.
After saying goodbye to Yugyeom, you and Jackson headed back to the East Wing to your separate rooms to unpack for your stay (still no sign of the nurse you were bunking with), and regrouped afterwards before you started your job roles.
"When you have time, keep a look out for any unused rooms, and tools we can use, of course keeping an eye out for any extra paranormal activity. From that tour alone, that place is definitely going to have its history."
You couldn't agree more. The place was a magnet for it, especially with all the negativity drawn to the patients. Spirits could easily take advantage of them.
"Ok Jackson, see you soon. Be careful."
"You too, Sweetcheeks."
It was now 8pm and you were taken along to your assigned floor with another nurse and a few orderlies. The orderlies were there in case anything were to happen, the 'muscle' if you will, however they didn't bring you any sort of comfort. They were big, much taller than yourself and had watchful eyes on your form particularly, as if they didn't trust you.
In fact it felt like they were there to watch you instead.
You didn't have more than ten patient's rooms on your floor, and as you started at one end you introduced yourself to each patient as you checked their rooms for any restricted items they might have stashed away, slowly making your way down.
On each heavy metal door was a slot with a removable sign that had the letters of each patient's name in black.
You committed each one to memory, before moving onto your next room.
'Min Yoongi'
The room was empty, no sign of a 'Min Yoongi' anywhere, ringing alarm bells in your head. There were no personal belongings in this room either, no photos, books or anything else. Apart from the crisp freshly made bed, side table and dresser, it was bare. It looked at if the patient might have been discharged. You couldn't risk guessing though.
"Um, excuse me," you began, grabbing the attention of one of the guards, "Do you know where this patient currently is? The room's empty."
"That one's a special case. He's in isolation at the moment, he won't be in this room for a couple of days, don't you worry about that one." His reply didn't put you at ease. Isolation? Were they allowed to do that? Perhaps depending on the situation maybe...
Nonetheless, you continued to the next room.
'Jung Hoseok'
You felt the blood pump through your veins more prominently as you read the name on the next door. Here it was, his room. You weren't sure what to expect, almost having to tell yourself that there was only a man in need in there and not a long clawed, red eyed toothy grinned monster.
It didn't make you feel any better.
You mentally slapped yourself when you realised that ever so slightly your hand had been shaking as you reached for the handle. There was no need to be acting like that! Stop it!
Perhaps it was because you were alone this time, without Jackson and Yugyeom at your back. The thought had your face paling. No, you didn't have the boys with you this time and that made you scared. It made you realise that there had always been someone with you when facing something like this, always looking out for you, and it made you feel grateful. This time, you were on your own.
You shook the clouding thoughts away, remembering that nothing should go wrong, not when there were eyes watching and guards on standby outside the room.
You would be fine.
For now.
Getting yourself together you gripped the metal handle of the door, opened it with a hard push as it was fairly stiff and heavy and stepped into the room.
There sat on the bed at the end of the room was a dark haired man, basking in the little sunlight that managed to sneak past the metal bars of the window above the bed, his head craned up to it like a sunflower that fed upon it.
What you saw wasn't an insane, possessed man,
but an angel.
