Chapter 1 - Case i
Part 1 - A Ghost in My Head
Possession cases weren't usually common, however in this incident, they were piling up on your desk rapidly.
You had three in total so far, four if it weren't for the one you had recently taken care of. They were difficult and took a toll on your mental health and sometimes physical if they got violent, but that didn't stop you from working them. Even if your job kept you from actually having a 'life'. Your job was your life, for now at least. No fun, no hobbies and no romance. Friends were a slightly different situation. You had made friends within the P.I.A as well as someone else outside of work and it made your life a little lighter on your shoulders.
Sighing, you knew the only way to get through these cases was to do one at a time and keep pushing through. Some would take longer than others but that's just how it was sometimes. So as you sat at your desk, you plucked the top file from the pile and opened it up.
JEON JUNGKOOK
AGE: 19
GENDER: Male
CASE: Possession
EXTRA DETAILS: Called in by Mrs Jeon. Lives with his single mother. Started showing signs of aggression, drastic change in behaviour.
Mrs Jeon's description, 'The whole house is constantly cold, and strange paranormal things have been happening in my life since my son changed into this...thing.'
You couldn't help but roll your eyes at the mother's description. Typical of 'normal' people to describe it like that to be honest.
It was a classic ghost occurrence when an area was haunted, that it would grow colder and darker, even at midday under the sun, otherwise known as 'cold spots'.
Possession cases were much difficult to handle and mentally challenging unlike simple house hauntings and whatnot, but you accepted nonetheless because it was your nature to help others.
You hated to see others in such distress, helping others gave you a good sense of satisfaction and it made you feel better that there was one less unhappy person in the world. These kind of cases would often completely ruin lives and tear families apart, and you hated it. So you would do what you could to stop as many of these cases as you could.
Bang Shihyuk, the CEO of the small company was also your boss and would often be the one to finalise decisions.
With any case that you chose you would have to submit it to Mr Bang to analyse, then he would give you the permission to go through with it.
You stood in his office facing the man who read through the case file at his desk, silent in his concentration. You waited patiently for your boss to finish his analysis.
"Seeing as your last possession case went pretty smoothly, I'll accept this one Miss (L/n). Take Yugyeom and Jackson with you for backup, and as always make sure no harm comes to the host. We don't want to lose our good reputation."
You bowed slightly in thanks and respect to your boss.
"Thank you sir, I won't let you down!" You said with a little salute to go with it. Bang smiled in amusement.
"I'm glad to see you're not so bothered by these cases anymore, (Y/n)."
Your smile faltered at his words, and your hand slowly lowered. Did he really have to bring that up? The fact that a few years ago you would refuse cases like this or simply hand them over to someone else. Bang seems to notice your change in behaviour and sighs in guilt.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to bring back the past," He pauses, not sure what else to say. "You have come so far Miss (L/n), I'm proud." He says with a small smile. "You may go now, dismissed." He ends, passing the case file back to you.
Your put on your best fake smile and nodded, before heading out of the lavish office Mr Bang would often confine himself in.
Once the door was closed you let out a breath you hadn't realised you had been holding. Gathering yourself together, you glanced at your watch that read 2:00PM. It was time for your next job of the day, therapy. You had been trained in it to a certain degree, but there was no way you would consider yourself a professional. So, you trotted back to your office to switch 'Jeon Jungkook's' file with the one you needed, and placed Jungkook's into the 'ongoing investigation' drawer, then made you way to your next location. Kim Seokjin's room, for his therapy appointment.
"How are you doing Jin?" You asked as you entered the room after knocking, and being greeted with a grunt. You were met the man sitting in a comfy chair, with a set frown on his well sculpted features. You didn't think it suited him at all.
As Jin had become more stable he had been moved from the psychiatric ward to the more comfortable one, were patients were aloud more belongings in their rooms as they could be trusted not to hurt themselves.
The rehabilitation ward. Here they could roam freely, had access to a library, gym, outhouse, dining room and kitchen. However there was a 9 o'clock schedule on which patients had to return to their respective rooms.
The undeniably handsome male looked up from his book and returned your smile with a bored expression, almost irked with your presence.
"I've told you (Y/n), call me Seokjin. Someone like you does not deserve the- "
"Ah, sorry sorry," You grinned sheepishly. "Just trying to be friendly. Are you alright to have a session?"
Closing his book, Jin nodded and placed the hardback onto the side table, before running a large hand through his smooth blonde locks.
"It's not like I have a choice in the matter." He muttered.
Ignoring his words, you took a seat opposite him and took out Jin's personal file, where you would record your sessions and progress with the patient.
KIM SEOKJIN
AGE: 26
GENDER: Male
CASE: Possession
EXTRA DETAILS: Murdered three people while possessed due to uncertain circumstances. Spirit has been exorcised from host and destroyed. Victim in rehabilitation centre slowly recovering.
Therapist: Miss (L/n) (Y/n) and Miss Kim Jisoo
These 'sessions' were like one to ones with the patients. The facility was not only created to hunt down ghosts and paranormal activity but also dedicated to helping the people involved with the traumatic experiences that they had encountered. These ghostly experiences could damage people emotionally and mentally, as well as physically in extreme cases. The place was run almost like a psychiatric hospital.
While dealing with ghosts and ghouls you would also help the victims involved with the paranormal experiences.
Instead of having one therapist each, patients would usually have multiple as to improve the way you could help each patient by sharing ideas from sessions and so the patient would have a variety of people to talk to if they so wished.
You worked with your friend Jisoo to rehabilitate Jin, and would switch shifts from time to time.
Jin had been the first of your six possession cases that were piled up on your desk in your office.
You couldn't help but shiver slightly in this room of his. Although the decor was plain it still gave a look of comfort, and the heating was on, but you couldn't brush off the small nudge in your head, that told you something wasn't quite right with the room. Not only that, but you could never find yourself completely comfortable while alone with the handsome man in front of you. You weren't sure if it was the way he stared at you, or maybe you just felt slightly intimidated by him.
"So, how have you been doing? How are you settling in?" You questioned, pen ready at your paper.
"Fine." Was his short answer. You frowned.
"What about emotionally? How have you been feeling?"
He rose a brow at you, as if to say 'are these really the questions you're going to ask?'
Then it hit you, a word that describes the way he looked.
Arrogant.
You sneered inwardly.
You had been trying to think of a word that best describes your patient from the past few sessions you had had with him. Yes, that's what he was. Arrogant. And you did your best not to let it rub you up the wrong way.
This time you tried a slightly different question.
"What kind of career were you looking to delve into, Seokjin? Before everything..."
Jin rested his chin on his hand and looked at you in the eyes, his stare making you shift in your seat. You could see a ghost of a smirk in his sly smile as he said, "Modelling of course. With a face like this how could I not want to do that?"
You let out a giggle which died down quickly when you noticed something.
He wasn't joking. Even with the smile on his face the man was completely serious. Perhaps he was a little egotistical.
You cleared your throat and moved onto the next question you had lined up in your head.
"How have you been sleeping recently?"
"I've had better nights, but its not terrible. I sometimes find myself waking up in the night." He replies honestly, leaning back in his chair and turning his heavy gaze to the window, much to your relief.
"Anything we can do to help with that?" Seokjin shook his head gently in a silent response.
You suddenly felt like you weren't getting anywhere with him. You weren't establishing a trusting and friendly relationship with your patient and you began to grow angry with yourself. You were never good at this. Jisoo was the better therapist, not you. In some ways you envied her for it, being able to fully get to the bottom of her patients problems.
C'mon (Y/n), you've got to try and click with him. Perhaps if I ignore the standard procedure and questions he'll open up a bit more, once he knows I'm not just doing this because its my job. There's no harm in trying!
You knew this was against the rules, but you wanted to do your best to help. So, you clicked your pen away and placed the file down, stopping your recordings of the session and got comfier in your seat.
"Look, Seokjin." From your change of tone to a more serious one, you managed to gain the males attention. An ounce of pride shot through you as Jin's eyes had widened in surprise. "I know you think I'm only here because it my job, but I genuinely want to help you through this. So don't think of me as your therapist, think of me as your friend, and if you can't do that then acquaintance will do."
Jin looked fairly speechless from your change in attitude towards the session and honestly, he liked it. It was like a breath of fresh air had made its way into the stale, dull room.
"What do you like doing? Do you have any hobbies? Say...I don't know, dancing for example?"
He snorted at your example of a hobby, which caused you to narrow your eyes at him slightly.
"What? What's wrong with dancing?" You argued, not appreciating his behaviour. You were trying here! It would be nice if he could meet you halfway!
"You call that a hobby?" Jin taunted. You huffed and crossed your arms at his reply. Amusement shifted in his eyes at your actions, before it was gone in a flash.
"Well what do you like to do then?" You grumbled.
The male looked down at his lap in thought, not sure on why he was actually thinking of telling you. Something about the fact that you were changing the way you were carrying out the session, you seemed to be, sincere with your questions, and it confused him slightly.
What were you gaining out of this?
He looked back up at you, and searched for your eyes.
"I like, cooking." He said, almost shyly, averting his eyes downward again. "What?" He grumbled as he looked back up to see your surprised expression.
You switched back from your surprise and sent him a big grin.
Thump.
Thump.
Jin wasn't sure what it was, but that uncomfortable but strangely pleasant beat came from his chest. He ignored it, and avoided looking at the way your lips spread into an awful(beautiful) smile.
"Sorry, I was just taken aback for a second there. This is good! Cooking is good!" You praised him, not only for the subject of interest but the fact he had told you something about himself of his own free will, and not the other way around where you find everything about him from his files.
You went on to talking about the types of dishes Jin liked to make and why he liked it so much, and he was actually seeming to come out of his arrogant shell. You would even go so far as to say he was mildly enjoying the relaxed conversation.
"I have an offer for you," You said. "How would you like me to fetch a load of ingredients for you? And we can cook a few things together tomorrow?"
You knew this was risky. Getting too friendly or close to your patients could arise uncertain complications and wasn't part of the job description.
The slight spark in his eyes suggested that he liked the idea, but his words made you frown in distaste.
"You mean I would show you the art of cooking. From our conversation I've picked out a few things about you, and from what I gathered you don't know much about cooking." He smirked.
Arrogant, arrogant, arrogant. Dick.
Just as you were about to snap a retort he continued. "But yes, I would...Really like that."
'Thank you' was still not in his vocabulary it seemed, but it would do for now. You were ecstatic with the progress you had made with the male so far.
Finally the session was over and you bid Jin a goodbye, feeling oddly satisfied with yourself that you had somewhat been accepted by the man, even if he did still see you as a lower being than himself.
What you failed realise as you left the room was the eyes that followed your figure until you were completely out of sight.
He hated to admit, but Seokjin's heart had opened up the smallest hole, and he was willing to try something new...He scowled at the effect you had had on him from the session, and what he noticed once you were gone, were that his fists had been clenched until his knuckles turned white.
He hadn't felt such emotion since he had been held captive by that evil spirit, even if he couldn't quite put his finger on what emotion it was.
"You what?" Jisoo gasped from beside you, as you made a cup of your favourite hot drink.
"You heard me, Ji."
Jisoo stared at you with a furrowed brow, frustration clear in her eyes.
"How though? I've been trying for ages to get him to just merely bare my presence! The guy hates everyone because he thinks he's some sort of king way above us! Urgh this is so annoying!" The girl next to you fumed. "(Y/n) you've got to show me you tactics? How'd you get him to open up?"
You grinned and replied with a 'nope', overly popping the 'p' with your lips and continued to sip on your hot beverage. There was no way you were letting her have this, after all this time you finally had the upper hand on Jisoo in this friendly war between the two of you.
Also because there was no way you could tell her 'don't be his therapist, try and be his friend. Ignore protocol'. Because that would not go down well.
"Awww c'mon (Y/n)! We're besties, please tell me your ways." She begged and pushed out her bottom lip in a pout, on top of the complete puppy eyes she was giving you.
"No." You deadpanned.
"(Y/n)!" She whined in the background as you walked out of the kitchen, bidding her a good night.
You had to get an early, well rested night for the day ahead of you. You had to be on top of your game when you go to to fetch a certain possessed boy from the Jeon residence the next day...
Soooo, what do you think? Don't forget to vote and comment, do whatever it is you do! -Rikki
