Chapter 4: Misconceptions

Raven's POV

Robin and Star are home and they were holding hands, while somehow still looking worried when they came in.

Cyborg is walking up to the door. He should be up in a bit.

Meanwhile Robin can interrogate me! Yay! What a treat...

Here he comes with Beast Boy and Star. And here comes Cyborg too!

Now it's a freaking party.

Why am I so annoyed after what I just did with him?

"Now give us a run through on what happened." Cyborg said.

"Nice to see you too." I said sarcastically.

"Oh...whoops." He said a little embarrassed

"Did you guys have fun?" I asked politely.

"Oh yes! Robin took me to the top of the building of Jump and we ate a small lunch!"

"You mean Jump Spire?" I asked.

"Yes!" Star answered happily.

"And what about you?" I asked Cyborg.

"I had an all out Battle Brothers tournament with Mas y Menos!" He said loudly. Robin gave him a side eye. "Ahem..it was fun." He finished in a much calmer tone.

"Alright. Enough small talk. Tell us what happened." Robin demanded.

I really don't want to relive that again. At least what I remember of it. The rest is what I got from Beast Boy, which still wasn't pleasant.

But I have to tell them.

I don't want whatever that crap was that got into my body to have any worse affects that Slade intended it to.

"Actuallly, Beast Boy knows more than I do about it." I said looking at him.

"How is that so?" Starfire asked.

"Because she doesn't remember anything." Beast Boy clarified.

"I'll tell you what I do know." I say. They wait.

"Slade took control of my mind and I fought Beast Boy off to cut myself." They looked Beast Boy, then back at me.

"Where?" Robin asked. I showed them my bandages.

"Then what about the bandage on your forehead?" Starfire asked.

I don't want to say anything, so I just stay quiet.

Beast Boy came over to me and placed his hand on my shoulder. He nodded and took his hand away.

"Slade somehow broke into the tower and got into her room. As a matter of fact, I think he just smashed the window in. When I got in there he was cutting into Raven's head. Then he poured some stuff on her and left. Later the stuff turned black." Beast Boy explained.

"Oww!" I whispered. I felt a little shock in my right wrist. I jerked a little.

"What was that Raven?" Cyborg asked.

"The stuff got into my bloodstream." I reply. Robin's eyes (mask) grew slightly wider.

"What color was it before it turned black?" He asked.

"It looked like water." I'm turned away from them now, gripping my elbows with my hands.

The slightly abrasive bandages rubbing against my skin made me slightly uncomfortable. My head is hung low, and my eyes are closed. I kind of zone out. They are pretty much asking Beast Boy most of the stuff because I can't remember a thing.

"Raven?" I jerked my head up and turned around.

"Is it ok it Robin runs some tests to figure out what the stuff is?" Beast Boy asked.

"Uh...sure." I said as I turned around.

"Ok. I need a blood sample some of your saliva."

I gave him what he needed. Then I unwrapped my bandage and gave it to him. It has some of my blood.

"Really? Don't you need that?" Robin asked.

"Eh. I'll just get another one." They are looking at the gash on my wrist so I hide it inside my cloak.

"Let me know when you have the results. I have to meditate." I said as I walked away. That's the truth and nothing but the truth. With the whole thing earlier I need to gather myself.

Now that I think back on it, I don't really know why I did it. Just impulse I guess...but do I really like him like that?

He likes me like that. I know that for sure, but that's only because I can sense it. He can't. He won't know unless I tell him otherwise.

Before about an hour ago he probably thought I didn't give a crap about him. That we live together and that's it.  But that's not the case anymore.

But it won't feel real until I admit it. That's the whole point. You can say you love somebody all you want but until both people say it to the other, it's not set in stone. At least that's what I think. It can be easily changed by one small thing that can destroy it.

It's like a thin pane of glass. Beautiful, fragile, and clear, but when force is applied to it, it breaks into tiny pieces that are very difficult to fix.

Somebody is knocking on my door.

"Hey Raven, its me." I'm satisfied knowing who it is.

"It's not locked." I replied not budging from my meditative state. He quietly came in and shut the door behind him.

"Here's your new bandage." He said. I opened one eye to see his outstretched hand holding a bandage. I took it and wrapped it around my exposed wrist.

"Thanks." I said closing my eyes again." I got a shock in my head. I twitched.

"Ow!"  I said under my breath again.

"What was that?" He asked.

"What was what?" I ask.

"You jerked or something."

"Oh.. that was nothing."

"You sure? You're looking a little paler than usual." Am I? It's pretty hard to tell. I flew to a mirror. I am pretty pale.

I got a shock in my left wrist. I jerked and ignored it. It's probably my nerves firing off randomly in reaction to where the stuff entered my body.

"What is it chills or something. You sure you're ok?" He sounds kind of concerned. With good reason too. I do feel slightly strange.

Maybe it'll become clearer when Robin tells me what the stuff is.

"Hey guys I found something. Meet me in the lab." Robin's voice came over the intercom. I tripped over my own feet as I landed and fell on Beast Boy.

"Sorry." I apologized. All he did was laugh and helped me up.

"It's fine. I didn't know you were a clutz." He smiled his goofy smile while I was secretly giving him an uppercut in my mind.

We left my room and went downstairs. When we entered the lab Robin was hunched over a microscope and Star and Cyborg were standing next to him.

"What took you two so long?" Cyborg asked. "Or is it something I shouldn't talk about?" He said with a sly smile..

My hood is up so I just closed my eyes, but Beast Boy is blushing. A lot.

"What did you find Robin?" I said changing the subject.

"Take a look for yourself." I looked through the microscope and only saw my blood cells. There just seemed to be more than there should be in that one drop.

"What's the problem?" I asked.

"That drop is way over populated. That's because there are extra cells in there. The extra cells are molecules of that stuff Slade poured on you. They copied your DNA and started to replicate your blood cells. Have you been feeling anything weird? Like an electric shot or throbbing around your cuts?" He asked.

"Yeah. Each one. A small electric shock it feels like."

"That means the stuff has already made its way to your brain." My brain? What is it doing in my brain? What is this stuff?

"What is it actually?" I said with a little distress in my voice.

"I can't pinpoint it exactly, but it's some sort of neurotoxin. But it won't kill you oddly enough. It's also technologically modified. So I can track them, what they're doing, and where they're going." He offered.

Would that be the best idea? I feel like we're being too predictable. Like this is exactly what Slade wants us to do.

"No." I said returning to my monotonous state.

"Why Raven? This could really help-" I cut Cyborg off.

"Were being to predictable. This is exactly what he wants us to do. Slade's a madman but he's not stupid. We should know that by—now." I got another shock in my head.

I feel like a power line. I'm a living power line. They totally ignored it though.

"Raven is right. Slade is very intelligent. We should give him any of the leverage he does not already own." Starfire agreed.

Thats sealed the deal if Starfire agrees. With Robin and Star, it's her way or no way.

Rightfulky so, because she can kill all of us if she wanted to. Granted, so can I.

10 PM

I just had dinner by myself. Well, Star was in the room, but I ultimately kept to myself. Oddly enough, she didn't ask me to do anything. In fact, she didn't talk to me at all. Maybe she did and I didn't hear her.

My back was turned to her the whole time. Maybe I should go and talk to her. I leave my room and walk through the Ops room to try to get to Starfire's room. I walk past Robin's room and I hear voices. I stop.

"I do not get it. I was speaking and she did not answer." A muffled Starfire said.

"It's fine Star. Don't worry about it. She probably didn't want to talk." A muffled Robin replied.

"You do not understand, Robin. It is like she did not hear me at all."

"She probably didn't-"

"She acted as if she did not even know I was present. Is she ignoring me?" I forget that Star is so sensitive sometimes. I should be nicer to her being the only other girl on the team. But I didn't mean to ignore her this time. I truly didn't hear her.

I want to go in there and say I wasn't ignoring her but then they would know I'm eavesdropping. So I wait.

"I'm sure she's not ignoring you Star. Maybe she really just didn't hear you." I can hear Star crying a little.

"I was talking for over 1200 seconds." 20 minutes? I didn't hear her for 20 minutes? I feel even worse than I did before...

"Really? Hmmm. It could be possible that the neurotoxin is starting to mess with her senses. I should go talk to her." I can hear him walking towards the door. I'm just going to pretend I was walking by and heard some of it.

"Oh Raven. How long have you been there?"
"I was just walking by." I said as Star poked her head out.

"How much did you hear?" I knocked on the wall.

"Thin walls." Not a lie.

"Oh..." Star said looking to the ground. She brought her whole body into view.

"I'm sorry I ignored you Starfire. I didn't hear you at all." I apologized. She gave me a small smile.

"It is the cool." She replied.

"That's exactly what I wanted to ask you about. Have you been experiencing any other sense loss Raven?" Robin asked.

"When I made soup for dinner I didn't smell anything when I sniffed the bowl." I answered.

"The toxin is taking effect quicker than I thought it would."

"Why do you not take it out of her Robin?" Star asked innocently.

"It's part of her now. They've formed into her own cells with her DNA. It would be very difficult to get them out. Plus they're in her brain. I'm not a brain surgeon and I don't want to damage anything." That's a pretty good reason.

Now my vision is blurry. Great.

I'm blinking to try and fix my vision. But it's not working. I rub my eyes, and then my vision becomes clear again.

"I couldn't see." I said.

"That's three. First your hearing, then smell, then eyesight."

"The tasting and the touch are left yes?" He nodded.

"Tell me if anything else happens Raven." He walked away. Star hugged me and walked in the opposite direction.

I'm really starting to fall apart. But why would Slade put a neurotoxin in my system if he doesn't intend to kill me? I don't even know how I'm acting so normal while I am potentially...

I don't even know how I'm supposed to finish this sentence.

I'm going to go talk to Beast Boy. If I don't tell him he'll get upset with me. I knock on his door. He opens the door and he suddenly seems taller. He no longer looks up at me.

I look him straight in the eye as our eyes are level now. He's wearing a white tee-shirt and purple sweat pants that just (barely) reach his ankles. He's got white socks on and, as usual, his room is the domestic equivalent of a dumpster.

"Hey Rae." He said happily. I'm not sure weather to be happy or normal. "You ok? You look a little sad." Do I? I don't know how I look anymore.

"Not really. Can I come in?"

"Sure." He moved out of the way looking a little surprised and allowed me to enter. Then he shut the door. We're alone again.

"What's going on?" He asked.

"The neurotoxin is affecting my senses. Sometimes I can't see, sometimes I can't hear, sometimes I can't smell. The only ones that haven't acted up yet are taste and touch."

"This is getting bad Raven." He replies.

"I know. I don't know what's going to happen and that scares me. I'm scared Beast Boy." I admit.

Admitting it certainly makes me feel better.

Beast Boy's POV

I wonder why Raven is here. She looks shorter now. Did she get shorter or did I get taller? Wait, did I get taller? I can look her in the eyes now without lifting up my head. We're the same height. I wonder if they makes me more attractive...

She looks kind of sad. "Hey Rae. You ok? You look a little sad." I ask.

"Not really. Can I come in?" She wants to come in my room. My dirtier-than-a-landfill room? This must not be good.

"What's going on?" I ask as we sit on my bottom bed.

"The neurotoxin is effecting my senses." She said without looking up. "Sometimes I can't see, sometimes I can't hear, sometimes I can't smell. The only ones that haven't acted up yet are taste and touch." Slade is ruining her life.

"This is getting bad Raven." I say in a comforting tone.

"I know. I don't know what's going to happen and that scares me. I'm scared Beast Boy." Out of all the people she could have told she was scared, she told me. And she trusts me enough for that.

She let out a big yawn and rested her head on my shoulder. I put my hand on her soft violet colored hair and she slowly drifted to sleep.

I laid down in my bed and she followed. The deeper she got into sleep the calmer she became. Her muscles stared to relax as she grabbed my arm.

She cuddled up on me as if I was a pillow. She smiled and buried her head into the pillow and her breathing became consistent. I closed my eyes and went to sleep, finding comfort in Raven as she found comfort in me.

3 AM the next morning

Ouch! She kicked me! I open my eye that isn't buried in the pillow and I see her tossing and turning.

"No, leave me alone! It's not you!" She said. I tried shaking her up. No dice. "That's not possible!"

"Raven wake up!" I shake her more but it's not working.

"You can't be him!" She yells. Then she shoots up.

"Raven!" She turns to me with a horrified look on her face. "Are you ok?" I say putting my hand on her right shoulder. She looks at it, then me in fear.

She pushed it away and gets up. I reach out my hand but she looks at it in terror and backs up from me. I get up and runs out of the room.
"Raven come back!" I call trying to not wake anyone up.

I fly after her as a crow and we end up on the roof, her back facing the sea.

"Careful Raven. You're near the edge." I move closer and she moves closer of the edge.

"Get away from me!" She takes one more step back and she'll fall. "Leave me alone!" She yells.

What happened? Just a couple hours ago she was happily sleeping and now she seems scared for her life.

"Ok I won't come any closer just don't step back." I bargain. She unintentionally steps back anyway and she falls. I run to the edge.

"Raven! Fly!" I call. She doesn't fly.

"Please Raven. Fly." Then right before she reaches the ground, she takes off. She comes back up to the top of the tower but doesn't land. Her hair is blowing in the as she looks at me. We stare.

"Let's go inside." I suggest.

"No. I can't trust any of you anymore. Not Cyborg, not Starfire, not Robin, nor you. I'm going to find someone I can trust." She says with a small quivering lip. She looks terrified.

"What? You can trust us!" I say.

"No I can't. I can only trust Slade..." That's it!

"Slade? Is he controlling you?"

"No..." Why should I believe her? Because she isn't being aggressive. She's telling me the truth and I know she means what she says right now.

"But-"

"Don't follow me..." she quietly. Then she flew away. I watch her as she leaves me. The one person that makes me the happiest has left me for a criminal.

Slade turned her against me.

Slade turned her against all of us.

Robin, Cyborg and Star came running up the steps in their pajamas except for Cy. He doesn't wear any.

"What is going on?" Robin asked.

"We heard the screams of you and Raven. Is everything the alright?" Star asked.

"No, I'm not. She left."

"What?" Cyborg looks confused.

"She said she can't trust us anymore."

"Why?" Robin asked.

"Slade. That's why."
