prologue
Mackenzie was a klutz.
It was her biggest defining trait: being clumsy. She would often even trip over the air. She had a complete lack of coordination and would take tumbles to the ground regularly. She had no idea that her clumsiness would make her fall right into a vampire. Literally.
But that was the future. This was now. She was terribly clumsy and she tripped getting out of the car at her new school in Sunnydale.
She righted herself before she fell completely. Then she turned to her father, Ezra, who had dropped her off. She wore a sheepish smile, "Well, I tripped for the first time here. It's officially home."
Ezra shook his head and fixed her with his stare, "A year, Kenzie."
"Yes, a year," Kenzie smiled. "And in that year, it'll be home."
"Home," he agreed as he stared at his daughter softly. He never understood her desire to remain in a place. Home was where family was, the two of them. But, nevertheless, he'd try this out for her, the staying in a place. "And be home on time."
She gave him a thumbs up with a bright smile before shutting the car door behind her. She walked off towards the entrance of the school and...she tripped over a crack in the cement. This time, she did tumble to the ground.
"I'm fine! I'm okay!" she called, knowing that her father was watching her make it to entrance.
And she picked herself up, still with a bright smile.
_____
"Check out the new girl," Xander exclaimed as he stood by Willow and Buffy while he watched the new girl walk around.
Mackenzie dressed like a typical school girl. She had on a white collared long-sleeve button up tucked into her high-waisted black skirt. She had a black headband to keep her hair out of her face. She wore black leggings and her trusty black Converse because she would literally die in anything that was more than an inch off the ground. She was that clumsy.
"She's very, very pretty," Xander stared in awe at the brunette with the kind smile and gorgeous big, brown eyes.
"It looks like you have a little drool right there," Willow teased.
"Oh, ha, ha. Very funny," Xander said sarcastically. "I was just saying, you know. Pointing out a fact."
"Uh huh. We totally believe you," Buffy teased as well.
"Well, you should because there is absolutely...hey, is she walking into the same English class as us? I'm totally gonna go steal the seat next to her. See ya."
Buffy and Willow giggled as Xander hurried off to class.
_____
Mackenzie had been taken to each of her classes by a very nice boy. His name was Jonathan. After walking around cluelessly, he had approached her a bit shyly.
"If you're lost, I could-I could show you around. It wouldn't be any trouble," he had said nervously.
"Really? Thank you."
So the short, adorable dark-haired boy showed her around. Even if he didn't have a class with her, he would come running, out of breath, from his own class to take her to her next class. It was really sweet and she appreciated it.
In English, a class they both shared was when she met a boy named Xander. He tried to offer to be her tour guide; in fact, she had quite a few of those offers and she didn't really understand why. She refused Xander.
"Sorry," she smiled apologetically before looking at Jonathan with a bright smile who sat in front of her. "But I already have my tour guide."
Jonathan went bright red at the smile she threw at him and he said in awe, "No problem. Really."
So Jonathan took her from class to class. She had physical education later in the day (which was not with Jonathan). They were in the gym running laps and she was running alongside a girl named Buffy. She gave her a smile before she ran ahead, going faster, and she was ahead of the entire class.
"Is it just me or is the new girl outrunning Buffy?" Xander said to Willow as he jogged next to her; they both noticed Buffy try and fail to catch up yet Mackenzie looked like she was barely even breaking a sweat.
"No, it's not just you," Willow said with wide eyes.
Buffy was getting agitated as she tried to catch up. But then Mackenzie tripped suddenly over her own feet and fell to the ground. Buffy smiled as she went to pass the girl but then she heard laughs from some of the classmates at the expense of Mackenzie.
It made Buffy frown and stop before Mackenzie. She held her hand out to the new girl who took it gratefully as Buffy pulled her to her feet.
"Thanks," Mackenzie smiled as the laughing classmates ran past.
"Don't let them get to you," Buffy advised.
Mackenzie had been dusting herself off before furrowing her eyebrows like she hadn't noticed the laughing classmates (and she hadn't). She formed a small reassuring smile, "Don't worry. I'm used to it. Plus, my dad says I should make friends that laugh with me instead of at me. Me being clumsy just makes it easier to find those types of friends."
"Your dad sounds wise," Buffy said as they started to jog together around the gym again.
"Yeah, but don't tell him that," Mackenzie gained wide eyes. "It might go to his head."
Buffy chuckled, "My lips are sealed."
They caught up to the rest of the class and jogged beside Willow and Xander. His eyes went wide and he smiled, "Hi. Hey. You're Mackenzie?"
"Yeah," she giggled a bit. "But I prefer Kenzie."
"Kenzie. Yeah. Got it," he mumbled. "Pretty."
Mackenzie blushed before Willow asked, "So you run a lot? You're like really fast."
"No," Kenzie answered sheepishly. "Running has just always been easy for me."
"Lucky," Xander breathed a bit heavily.
"So we're going to the Bronze tonight? Do you want to join us?" Buffy questioned.
"Um..." Kenzie hesitated. "I'm not really allowed out after dark but thanks, though."
"You've never been a rebel?" Buffy bumped her shoulder against hers playfully.
"No," Kenzie said with wide eyes. "I hope you won't think less of me but it's for a good reason. Promise."
"No, we'd never think less of you," Xander stared at her in awe. "Right, Will?"
"We will totally withhold judgement," Willow formed a small smile.
"But one night, you're totally coming out with us," Buffy smiled. "We'll sneak you out if we have to."
"Okay," she agreed with a small smile.
_____
Her first day of school went really well and she felt like she made friends. On the second day was when it all went to crap. She had gotten kidnapped by a boy attempting to build a zombie girlfriend for his zombie brother, Daryl. They wanted to use her head.
She had gotten knocked out with chloroform. She had woken up on a gurney with straps across her body that held her down. She quickly panicked as she saw Daryl who looked like a version of Frankenstein.
Then Buffy and her friends came busting into the place. They quickly tried to chop off her head before Buffy got to them but Mackenzie ripped through the bindings and threw herself off the gurney as Buffy started to fight the villains.
"Woah, did you even need us to save you?" Xander questioned quietly as he pulled Mackenzie out of room.
"Doesn't Buffy need help?" she bit her lip as Xander lead out of that place.
"She can handle it. Trust me."
____
Buffy did end up handling it but she started to have questions about Mackenzie. The girl was strong and fast. Then the girl tripped one day and the contents of her bag fell out to reveal a wooden stake. Of course, she went to Giles.
"Giles, are you sure there aren't other Slayers?" Buffy asked.
"Why would you be asking such an absurd question?" Giles said. "No, Buffy. There is only one Slayer at a time. You know this."
So Buffy went patrolling with questions in her head. She was surprised to find a buff middle-aged man with medium length dark hair that curled on the ends. He was fighting a handful of vampires and he did it so skillfully (with a speed and strength that was not normal to humans) that he dusted all of them in a matter of moments.
Buffy was stunned.
"You must be the Slayer?" the man said out of breath.
"That'd be me," Buffy stated. "But who are you?"
He smiled with kind eyes, "Call me Ezra."
"So what? You hunt vampires?" she questioned. "Because if you're trying to steal my job, you can have it."
"I'd take it if I could," he said with a look full of pity. "The Council should never have chosen such a young age for Slayers."
"You're telling me," Buffy frowned as she crossed her arms. "So you know about Slayers?"
"I was descended from one from generations ago," Ezra explained. "Me and my daughter."
"Your daughter?"
"Mackenzie."
"Well, that explains...a lot."
AN: I finally finished Buffy the other day so I can finally start this. And yes I know that people descended from the Slayer don't get the Slayer strength/speed but that will be explained
