Chapter 7- Partner in Crime

Impatiently tapping my desk with my pencil, Shay finally decides she's had enough of it.

"Hey can you stop that?" She asked, in the nicest way possible. "It's driving me crazy."

"Sorry sorry. I'll stop." I said and she smiled.

We were going to be assigned our partners today and honestly, I was scared as frick.

Whoever it is, I'd have to spend pretty much almost everyday with them to be able to know how to do my project.

Bad thing is, I hate spending time with people I don't know. I turn into an awkward mess, freak out about whether they like me or not and then end up talking about the weather. I'm not horrible at socializing but still, I hate this kind of thing.

"The list is already up on the wall. You all may go look." Mr. Falkov announced and everyone ran up to see the list.

I finally got my chance to look at it and my mouth opened.

What the actual crapcakes.

"What the..." I heard Aiden say, just as confused and shocked as me.

"Why on earth would he even think of putting us together?" I asked in disbelief.

Suddenly, Mr. Falkov came up to both of us.

"You're probably wondering why I did it." He said and we both nodded.

"You'll both be forced to get along and act in a civilized manner for this project. So look at this as a way to...learn to not blow your chances." He said and we both gave him a weird look.

None of us said anything, and then he just walked away.

"Well...looks like I'm stuck with you for the next 7 weeks." I mumbled, but loud enough for him to hear.

"Awkwardddd..." He said.

"I like your word choice." I said with a flat tone.

"Thanks."

--

Today's class was basically nothing but watching videos on how to make art based on someone else. After we were done with that, we were told to sit with our partners and talk about how we plan on working together and make a plan.

"So...netflix and chill?" Aiden asked and I lightly punched his arm.

"Nice one." I said sarcastically and he laughed.

I don't know how he always managed to just act like nothing had happened and like we never fought or anything. I mean I sat here, still feeling awkward about it all and yet he just sat there and teased around. How does he do that?

"Well first of all, I need to know what your special art quality is." He said curiously.

"Realistic paintings. Mostly portraits and landscapes, but I can still paint other things. Those two just happen to be my favorites." I said and he gave me a thumbs up.

"Sweet, cupcake. No pun intended." He said and I laughed even though it wasn't that funny.

Mostly it was funny because it was so stupid.

"Now you. What's your special art quality?" I asked, and I was actually pretty interested in hearing it.

"Abstract art. I'm a sucker for paintings that people don't understand. It keeps it mysterious." He smirked and I rolled my eyes playfully, expecting that kind of thing from him.

"I think it's pretty rad though because every person makes it what they want. Everyone sees it in a different way." I said truthfully and he smiled in agreement.

"I like how you think Love." He said and then grinned. "...no pun intended."

This time I laughed, but at his reaction rather than his dumb pun.

"How will I get through these seven weeks?" I asked still laughing and he shrugged.

"Maybe you won't." He teased.

"So what do we do?" I asked, getting back on track.

"We could just chill. Hang out at different places every once in a while. Meet our families, friends. Get together to paint. Get coffee. I don't know?" He said, listing all possible options.

The thought of meeting his family was the weirdest thing. I wonder what they're like.

"You have any siblings?" I asked.

"Yeah. I have a younger brother and older sister." He said and I smiled.

For some reason I'd always pictured him as an only child.

"You?" He asked.

"An older brother. But we don't really talk, he's thirteen years older than me so we never get to see each other. He lives in Europe with his family and stuff." I explained and he nodded.

"Hm. Well, yeah I'll try to not make this whole experience so miserable." He promised and I gave him a small smile.

"Likewise."

--

When the class was over, Aiden had gone to the bathroom and then magically disappeared. I wanted to look for him to make plans for the project, but decided to just text him instead. I was too lazy to wait for him so I just went home.

So what do we do?

I waited for a reply for about forty five minutes and still got no answer.

???

I sent and still got no reply. I figured today just wasn't going to work and went to the kitchen.

Sitting there, Blue was eating a plain waffle

"No syrup?"

"Nope." She said.

"Bummer."

"Yep."

"So how was the course?" She asked, after swallowing down a bite of her boring waffle.

"Depends on how you look at it. Me and Aiden got partnered. So yeah." I said and she seemed to be thinking on it.

"I think...I think that's good." She finally said.

"Why would that be?" I asked, and noticed this whole time we were both acting in a very odd calm manner.

"Maybe working together will help you get along better." She said and I realized that's pretty much what Mr. Falkov thought as well.

"I guess it could be a possibility." I admitted and she raised an eyebrow, surprised I didn't argue back at her comment.

"I'm glad you think that." She smiled.

"Don't think we're going to end up getting married just because of this." I warned and she laughed.

"Not making any promises." She winked.

"How about we watch a movie?" I said, suddenly getting in the movie kind of mood.

"Chick flick?"

"Sure."

"Deal." She said and we did.

We ended up watching three movies. It was actually pretty nice though. Just some relax time. I looked to my side and saw that Blue was already asleep.

I slowly got out of the bed and as I made my way to my room, someone knocked on my door.

Who comes at this time? It's like 11pm.

I walked over to open the door and found a tall male figure standing before.

"What are you doing here Aiden?" I asked.

"Well good evening to you as well." He said sarcastically.

"It's like 11 o'clock! What do you want?" I said, sounding like a scolding mother.

"Well see, I had this really good idea on what to do. We're going to one of my favorite parts of the city." He said, and I had a bad feeling about it.

"Not now!"

"It's now or never." He said and I just stared at him, trying to decide whether or not I should do it. "Clock's ticking." He added, pointing down at the invisible watch on his wrist.

"What exactly are we going to do?" I asked suspiciously, eyeing him like he had some kind of disease. Although you never know with Aiden.

"You comin' or not, cupcake?" He asked, not bothering to answer my question.

I sighed.

"Do I actually have a choice?"

"Well, it is a free country...but no. Now let's go before it gets later." He said and I shook my head.

I walked out and followed him to his car.

"I don't even know why I actually listen to you." I said, mostly to myself.

"Because I'm the most amazing person you've met." He said conceitedly and I laughed.

"You wish." I said and looked at me.

"Don't lie." He winked and I rolled my eyes playfully.

He began to drive and I noticed we were making our way to one of the darkest parts of Brooklyn.

"Uh Aiden, what are we doing?" I asked, my voice hinting nervousness.

"Don't be scared. I've done this several times. You're safe with me." He said and I gave him a look.

Safe with him?

Okay now that one's hard to believe.

We got down and I saw we were in some hidden street with graffiti all over the walls. There was still plenty of wall without graffiti on it, and that's when I got the idea of what we might be doing.

Aiden walked to the trunk and took out about 10 spray paint bottles.

"No way. I'm not doing this." I said, already beginning to turn around and walk back into the car.

Aiden quickly grabbed my arm and I groaned at the fact he always does that. Why is he so much more stronger than me? That's so unfair.

"Oh come on. It'll be fun. I've done it several times." He said, and I frowned.

"No! I am not breaking the law!" I said in a childish tone and he laughed.

"No one's even going to see us. Just relax. Try having fun for once." He said and I narrowed my eyes at him.

"I can have fun!" I whined.

"Prove it." He smirked and I angrily walked over to him and snatched a spray paint bottle from his hands and opened it.

It was bright pink.

I started writing the word 'Punk' on the wall in my best graffiti writing and then proudly put it back down when I was done.

When I turned around to see Aiden, there was a smirk playing on his face and soon it evolved into a full smile.

"I knew there was a rebel somewhere in there." He said, proud of my work.

"It'a dedicated to you because you're a punk."

"I'm quite honored, your highness." He said in a British accent.

"You are welcome, young man." I replied, also in a British accent. "Now pass me the black. I ain't done boy." I said and he threw me the black spray paint.

"Now that's what I'm talking about." He said and then he began doing some graffiti himself.

We began to write words such as yolo, swag, potato, booty, and mushroom.

We started laughing at how irrelevant they looked next to all the other writing, which was mostly gang related stuff.

I drew a potato next to the actual word 'potato' and Aiden pointed out the fact it looked like the potato from a famous vine about a potato. I found this kind of stupid because really, all potatoes look exactly the same. However, I decided to ignore it because I didn't feel like having a discussion with Aiden about potatoes. He'd probably end up saying something about how all potatoes are special in their own unique way. I was not about to get myself into that kind of argument.

"I love that vine! Even though it's so stupid." I admitted.

"Me too. I'm not even going to deny it." He said and I laughed.

As if we could read each other's mind, we both began to sing the potato song at the same time causing us to burst into laughter.

A couple minutes after that, I announced I was tired.

"Past your bedtime?" He teased.

"Yes." I said shamelessly.

"Alright." He said, and we started walking back to the car.

Suddenly, we heard a siren and a police car drove right in front of us. It stopped and I felt Aiden tense up next to me.

"Crap. What the heck, how?" He mumbled.

"You said no one would find out!" I said in a panicked tone.

"I know I did! No one ever finds out...I don't know how they did." He said, and I bit my lip.

Why do I keep trusting him? I should've learned my lesson by now.

"Just...be calm." He whispered, trying to calm me down.

The officer got down from the car and walked over to us.

"Alright kids, you know this is illegal right?" He said seriously and my insides started to go crazy.

Oh my gosh. I'm going to jail.

"Uh sorry." Aiden said, not knowing what else to say.

"Both of you turn around and put your hands behind your backs." He commanded and my eyes got teary.

"Aiden you little punk. I'm going to jail because of you!" I whispered angrily.

"I'm sorry! I'll fix this, I swear!" He replied, while the officer handcuffed both of us.

"Sir, I know this is wrong and I won't argue against it at all but...just how exactly did you find out?" Aiden asked and I wished I could punch him.

The officer looked at him and then spoke.

"I didn't. I was called to go find out what all the noise was about because I had a lady near by complain about hearing people laughing and banging on things." He began, and I figured out she probably referred to the noises Aiden and I were making when we moved all the trashcans to keep spray painting on the walls that were being blocked by the trash cans. And well, the laughing was just laughing.

"But obviously, we've got something more serious going on." He finished and Aiden just nodded.

No wonder Aiden never got caught. I'm pretty sure he's not weird enough to just laugh all on his own. And we only moved the trashcans because there wasn't enough wall for both of us.  Of course this had to happen. It's Murphey's Law.

"Get in the car." He told us and we did as he told us.

The car was extremely small and it was quite uncomfortable being that close to Aiden, especially with handcuffs on. It meant I couldn't slap him.

The police got inside and started driving.

"We're going to get killed. Do you realize my life is over now? I wanted children and a life and the art course-"

"Will you stop freaking out? We'll get out tonight for sure." He said and I narrowed my eyes at him.

"My parents live on the other side of the country! There's no way they can bail me out. And well, Blue...if she doesn't answer her phone I'm officially screwed." I said, and he just stared at me, as if waiting for me to finally shut up.

"June."

"What?"

"I won't leave you behind you idiot. My sister can save our butts if Blue doesn't answer." He assured me and I sighed.

"How do we always end up getting in trouble?" I asked in disbelief at this situation.

"I guess that's our speciality." He smirked and I laughed, despite the fact I actually was having an internal breakdown.

"I hate you so much."

--

I cringed when I saw jail. It was literally the most awful place. It was gross. It almost looked like a school except with no color and it was full of criminals instead of students.

Aiden and I were all squished in the back and our proximity was literally making me go out of my mind. He smelled extremely good but the stupid comments he kept making the whole way here annoyed the living crap out of me.

"We're here." He said and I rolled my eyes.

"Oh really? I totally didn't notice the big creepy building in front of us." I retorted sarcastically.

Suddenly, the car door was opened and the policeman dragged both of us out.

"Get going kids." He said and we walked inside.

I noticed there was two doors which indicated one was for guys and one for girls. I quickly looked at Aiden and he nodded his head to reassure me I'd be okay.

"You'll be fine. Just go. See ya in a bit." He whispered smiling at me, as if I was a little girl who was scared to go inside on her very first day of school.

I smiled back and then walked in through the door.

After that, I didn't see Aiden anymore. Part of me became scared because somehow this whole time, he made me feel safe. It's quite ironic that I felt that way, considering he was the reason we ended up here in the first place. But then again, it surprised me how I felt about him in many situations.

A lady policeman walked me to my cell and I found two other girls there.

Oh gosh. What if they're dangerous and beat me up? I'm going to die.

"Excuse me, don't I get the chance to make a phone call?" I asked as politely as possible.

"Yes ma'am. But there's two people who will go before you so you have to wait." She said bluntly.

It looked like she was pretty sick of this place. She had no mercy for anyone in here. Although, if I were her I'd probably be done with it too. It smelt kind of funny in here and having to take care of rebellious humans didn't exactly sound like my go-to job.

"Oh okay." I mumbled and she opened my cell for me to walk in.

I did so, and took a seat on the floor, seeing that the beds were already taken.

I looked at the two girls sharing the cell with me and they were both intensely staring at me.

I swallowed a gulp of nervousness and awkwardly smiled at them.

"What's your name?" One of them asked. She had black long hair and piercing blue eyes. She was wearing black ripped skinny jeans, maroon and black vans and a maroon sweatshirt.

I wonder what got her in here.

"Uh, I'm June." I said, my voice sounding small.

"I'm Aliyah." She said.

The other girl spoke after that, and although she still seemed bad her aura gave me a less scary vibe.

"I'm Reese." She said and I nodded, smiling a bit.

Reese had dirty blonde curly hair and her tips were dyed a very dark purple. Her eyes were greenish brownish and all she was wearing were some short overalls, a tight black shirt underneath and a pair of black converse.

They both looked quite intimidating and I just sat here feeling grateful that I picked something good to wear for once and actually somewhat fit in. I was wearing some skinny jeans, all black vans, a black t-shirt, my everyday sun and moon necklaces and my hair was up in a messy pony tail.

Never did I think I'd actually be grateful I fit in in jail.

What is wrong with me?

"So why'd you end up in here?" I asked Aliyah and she smirked.

"Nothing too bad. My friends and I got caught drinking and smoking weed." She said nonchalantly.

"What about you?" I asked, turning my head to look at Reese.

"Broke into my ex boyfriend's house. I was supposed to steal his dog as revenge but like, his stupid mom heard and so she called the police on me. I don't even know why I thought stealing his dog would be smart because the stupid animal wouldn't shut up. But then again, I was stoned so." She said, and I began to laugh.

They both began to laugh too.

"I would've expected you to be the type to break into like a building, or beat someone up." I admitted and she shrugged.

"Eh. I do those things but never get caught for it." She said cooly and I shook my head.

"Ah okay." I chuckled.

How can someone seem so cool and careless about doing that kind of stuff? If I ever did anything like that I'd probably never be able to sleep in peace again.

"Now you, what'd you do?" Aliyah asked, raising an eyebrow at me.

"My stupid...." I began to say and wondered if I should call Aiden my friend or something less. I decided friend was the easier way to go. "...friend. He decided to go paint graffiti on some hidden street because he swore they'd never catch us since he apparently did it all the time. Of course, we got caught the one time I did it so now here I am." I said and they laughed.

"Ooh graffiti? We got a vandalism girl." Aliyah said and I rolled my eyes playfully.

"You any good?" Reese asked and I nodded.

"I gotta say I'm pretty good for someone who's never done it before." I admitted and they nodded in approval.

I was glad I seemed calm and collected at the moment because in reality, I was panicking like you have no idea.

"You may now make your phone call." The police lady said suddenly and I turned to look at her.

"Alright." I said and walked out of the cell to make the call.

I called Blue and prayed she'd pick up the phone. While I waited for her to answer, I looked around impatiently, tapping my fingers quickly on the top on the phone box. I noticed one of the officers brought in another girl. She was handcuffed and kept wriggling around trying to get herself out of the cuffs, failing to do so. She seemed to have a very tough character and she looked quite angry, narrowing her eyes at the officer when he finally pushed her into her cell. Suddenly, her face got close to the bars and she whispered something to him. He just turned around and ignored her, causing her to spit at him. My mouth was slightly agape as I witnessed her shameless actions and quickly turned around when her head turned in my direction and her dark brown eyes met mine.

I awkwardly fiddled with the hem of my shirt, trying to avoid eye contact with her, or anyone for that matter. I bit my lip, my heartbeat sped up, and my eyes started to water when I noticed Blue still wasn't picking up.

For goodness' sake Blue, pick up the phone.

Finally, on the last ring, I heard her sleepy voice and I let out a huge breath of relief.

"Hello?"

"FINALLY. Blue, you have to come get me. It's a long story but you have to help me." I pleaded desperately, my eyes still watery.

"June?" She asked, confusion and surprise evident in her voice. She probably expected me to still be back in the apartment.

"Yeah, it's me." I said, and at this point tears were rolling down my cheeks. "Please just come." I begged.

So much for looking tough and fitting in at jail.

"What the- who's phone are you calling me from?" She asked worriedly when she heard me sniffling.

"Uhm..." My voice cracked and I tried finding a better way to say it but it was impossible making this sound okay. "jail..."

"What?"
